Dear God, I Don’t Know Which Way To Go – Encouragement for Today – September 20, 2024

September 20, 2024 Dear God, I Don't Know Which Way To GoJENNIFER DUKES LEE Lee en español "But the Lord said, ‘Go, for Saul is my chosen instrument to take my message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the people of Israel.'" Acts 9:15 (NLT) Raise your hand if you've ever stood at life's crossroads, saying to yourself, Which way should I go? What if I choose the wrong path and mess up my life? My hand is raised. I struggle to choose a restaurant on a night out - so imagine my indecision when the stakes are high. For much of my early adulthood, I sought clarity by making pro-and-con lists so lengthy that each one probably needed its own table of contents. But when I met Jesus, that started to change. Early in my faith, I told a friend about my decision-making struggles. I knew I needed to stop writing dissertation-length lists and surrender to God, but I couldn't figure out practically how to do it. The friend gave me a simple prayer: Dear Lord: Your will, Your way. Amen. "Really?" I asked. "That simple?" Then I prayed that prayer. I still pray it today. I've learned that God loves it - and He will answer it, so I need to be ready to obey when He does. Even if it's uncomfortable. Even if it's contrary to my own desires. Exhibit A: Ananias in Acts 9. The Lord gave Ananias a clear vision telling him to prayerfully lay hands on Saul, a frightening dude who persecuted believers in Jesus. Ananias wasn't too keen on the idea. "‘But Lord,' exclaimed Ananias, ‘I've heard many people talk about the terrible things this man has done to the believers in Jerusalem!'" (Acts 9:13, NLT). You can practically hear Ananias' voice shaking. "But the Lord said, ‘Go, for Saul is my chosen instrument to take my message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the people of Israel'" (Acts 9:15). So Ananias went, walking straight into the center of God's will. Ananias didn’t know Saul had recently met Jesus Himself! Saul was temporarily blind after this life-changing encounter, but immediately when Ananias laid hands on him, scales fell from Saul's eyes. If Ananias had disobeyed, God could have made another way. But because of his obedience, Ananias got to play a key role in a milestone moment of the Christian faith: Saul, aka Paul, ultimately became a world-changing messenger for Jesus who spread the gospel to the nations. We might not have a vision like Ananias did or hear God's voice audibly, but as believers, we have His Spirit in us. We have His Word to lean on. We can seek Christian mentors and counsel. And we have a God who promises to give us direction. When we pray, Your will, Your way, it won't always be easy. But like Ananias, we can experience the peace of knowing this life-altering truth: The best place to stand is in the middle of God's will. Dear Lord, give me the voice to pray this prayer in moments of indecision: Your will, Your way. And then grant me the courage to obey. In Jesus' Name, Amen. OUR FAVORITE THINGS One practice that can help you discern God's will for your life is journaling. Jennifer's journal Stuff I'd Only Tell God is a great starting point to help you put pen to paper. ENGAGE Jennifer would love to connect with you on Instagram, where she daily explores topics such as surrender, seeking God's will, and trusting Him through all of life's circumstances. 2024 marks 20 years of publishing Encouragement for Today Devotions! One of our devotion writers, Kia Stephens, has created a special video message for you as we celebrate this milestone! Check it out here in our Encouragement for Today Facebook group! FOR DEEPER STUDY Isaiah 30:21, "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it'" (NIV). Psalm 23:3b, "He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake" (ESV). As the verses above suggest, God wants to direct us down paths that are both right and righteous. What big decisions do you face right now? As you think about the paths before you, how do these verses assure you that God will guide you down the right ones? We'd love to hear from you! A Prayer When Confronting Life’s Biggest Challenges – Your Daily Prayer – September 20

A Prayer When Confronting Life’s Biggest ChallengesBy Emma Danzey Bible Reading"Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him." – James 1:12 Listen or Read Below: What is a trial? Anything that is challenging, that tests us, grows us, and shapes us more into the image of Christ. James teaches us that we are blessed when we remain steadfast even in the most difficult circumstances. God has promised a crown of life in heaven to those who love Him. We are able to be filled by His Spirit each day, enabling us to take on the biggest challenges in life with His strength. To be honest, most people do not like or enjoy challenges. We might love the sense of victory when they are over, or the game planning of overcoming the obstacles, but a challenge is still a challenge. Jesus Himself asked that the cup would be taken away from Him. Luke 22:41-44 says, "And He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, saying, "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done." Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground." If it was acceptable for Jesus to wrestle with the Father in prayer over His circumstances, then it is acceptable for us. As we pray today, we are going to commit to authenticity as we confront our unique challenges in life. God cares about us and has never left us alone in our situations. He knows every thought that we think and every tear that we have cried. He can minister to the most difficult places in our hearts, where we feel defeated or afraid. When we do not understand and we cannot comprehend what or why, our God is trustworthy and always with us. Let’s Pray: Dear Lord,We come before you with one of life's biggest challenges. We are confronting it in Jesus' name. Your name is powerful and You can meet us in any situation. We confess that we do not like this challenge, we would never choose it, and we are wrestling Lord. Thank You that we get to come at this challenge with victory in Christ because of what You have already accomplished for us. We claim victory over our circumstances, our minds, our hearts, and our attitudes. We ask that You would give us strength to remain steadfast even in the longest trials. We pray for relief from our heavy burdens. You tell us that Your yoke is easy and Your burden is light. We receive that today and cast our anxieties upon You, believing that You will sustain us. You will never let the righteous fall. But God, this doesn't feel good, this is not what I would have chosen, we do not understand what You are doing in this. But we affirm who You are, You are trustworthy, You are working all things together for our good and Your glory because we love You. You tell us that no trial is wasted and that You can take the most broken situations and work something good into them. Your ways are higher than our own, You thoughts are not our thoughts. Thank You for seeing everything and being omniscient. We are so grateful to be Your children who can rest in Your arms. You care for us like a Shepherd cares for his sheep. You tell us in Psalm 23:4, "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." Thank You for being a Good Shepherd. Thank You for helping us to walk through the darkest valleys. Thank You for walking with us and never letting us be alone. Would you give us great wisdom and guidance in our decisions and responses to the hurdles that come our way. Give us the courage that we do not have and Your beautiful peace. We pray in your name, Jesus, amen.
