‘Stumbling Toward Utopia’: How the 1960s Took a Wrecking Ball to American Family

‘Stumbling Toward Utopia’: How the 1960s Took a Wrecking Ball to American Family

Up until the 1960s, the traditional nuclear family—one man, one woman, and at least one child—was seen as the societal ideal. But in the 1960s, the American family came under withering attack and has never been the same since—resulting in myriad societal problems that seem to spiral increasingly downward with each passing year. The Great Society “reforms” devastated the African American family, as men no longer had to be responsible for the children they fathered as long as the government was there to subsidize their promiscuity. Coupled with legalized abortion, men could simply walk away from a woman they impregnated because the “problem” of a child could just be disposed of by going to the local Planned Parenthood office. No-fault divorce laws were proposed, and then passed, under the pretense of making divorce more amicable and less traumatic. Instead, divorce rates skyrocketed, devastating generations of children who saw their worlds torn apart when mom and dad decided they did not want to remain together anymore. As Brad Wilcox of the Institute for Family Studies states, “Prior to the late 1960s, Americans were more likely to look at marriage and family through the prisms of duty, obligation, and sacrifice. … But the [1960s] psychological revolution’s focus on individual fulfillment and personal growth changed all that. Increasingly, marriage was seen as a vehicle for a self-oriented ethic of romance, intimacy, and fulfillment.” Wilcox is right. In the 1960s, marriage became seen as a vehicle for self-fulfillment, rather than lasting commitment. Like an automobile, once the paint faded and the engine stopped running as smoothly as it used to, it became time to get rid of the old model in exchange for an exciting new one that would bring a perception of joy. With no-fault divorce, couples can simply walk away, like an owner of an old car, by saying, “I don’t want it anymore.”  But that joy is an illusion. In my new book, “Stumbling Toward Utopia: How the 1960s Turned Into a National Nightmare and How We Can Revive the American Dream” (Fidelis, 2024), I examine how the attacks on marriage and the family in the 1960s brought devastation to men, women, and—most particularly—children, instead. In 1960, 73% of children lived in a traditional, two-parent divorced home, headed by a father and a mother. By 1980, that percentage dropped to 61%, and by 2015, it was 46%. A 2016 study done by Alicia VanOrman of the Population Reference Bureau and Paola Scommegna found that the radical changes of the 1960s led to more children growing up poor and more adults reaching old age without either a spouse or ties to an adult child to provide care—and thus finding themselves more dependent on the government. The rejection of traditional morality in the 1960s, accelerated by the Great Society programs that subsidized irresponsible behavior, has led to this consistent drop in the prevalence of marriage. This has manifested itself through young adults delaying marriage, choosing to cohabitate instead of marrying (and in many cases, as I document in my book, have been encouraged by government programs not to marry), or having trouble making commitments because of previous trauma—such as the loss of a parent due to divorce. I examine all these factors in my book. The 1960s compounded social error upon social error as the progressives of that era devalued the family, trumpeted the very actions leading to greater irresponsibility and dependence, and then offered abortion as a solution to the “perceived problem” (a preborn child) in order to allow themselves to live a life of “self-fulfillment” and “spontaneity” without responsibility. And the true victims of this irresponsibility are the children who pay the price for being the often-unwanted products of the lauded spontaneity of the 1960s. But there is hope, and that is what I try to provide. Many Americans are finally waking up to the cultural decay brought about by the 1960s and want to reverse the damage. This is particularly true among middle-aged adults—the children of the 1970s and 1980s—who experienced the devastation of the 1960s attacks on marriage and the family and are now embracing socially conservative views. Let’s all pray this trend continues and that America will reject the sexual ethos of the 1960s and return to a society that values marriage and family, and honors its responsibilities to future generations. We publish a variety of perspectives. Nothing written here is to be construed as representing the views of The Daily Signal. House Fails To Pass Government-Funding Bill With SAVE Act

The House failed to pass the CR with the attached SAVE Act on Wednesday to fund the federal government. “The House vote was 202 to 220, with 14 Republicans voting against it, two Republicans voting present and three Democrats voting for it,” CNN noted. I’m already talking to colleagues about their many ideas. We have time to fix the situation, and we’ll get right to it. I’m disappointed,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told reporters, according to CNN. The House rejected H.R. 9494 by a 202-220, with 2 voting present. https://t.co/8SgAfdZpzt — House Press Gallery (@HouseDailyPress) September 18, 2024 Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), who voted present, has criticized Johnson for setting up a fake fight that’s nothing more than political theater. You’re misinformed. She voted Present, as did I. Today’s vote was another act in the failure theater. Mike Johnson and other disingenuous actors wanted this vote to fail today so he could blame the only people who are actually fighting to save this country. — Thomas Massie (@RepThomasMassie) September 18, 2024 Per CNN: Johnson pulled a vote on the government funding legislation last week after enough House Republicans came out against the spending plan to sink it, but has been under pressure to take action on election security as Trump continues to sow doubts over election integrity in the run-up to November. “If Republicans don’t get the SAVE Act, and every ounce of it, they should not agree to a Continuing Resolution in any way, shape, or form,” Trump said on Truth Social earlier on Wednesday ahead of the vote. Johnson would not reveal on Wednesday ahead of the planned vote what he would do if the GOP government funding plan fails and said he has spoken to Trump “a lot” about government funding after the former president floated a government shutdown. Trump had previously said that if Republicans don’t receive “absolute assurances” about election security, they should not pass a funding extension. “Congress has an immediate obligation to do two things: responsibly fund the federal government, and ensure the security of our elections. Because we owe this to our constituents, we will move forward on Wednesday with a vote on the 6-month CR with the SAVE Act attached,” Johnson said Tuesday. “I urge all of my colleagues to do what the overwhelming majority of the people of this county rightfully demand and deserve – prevent non-American citizens from voting in American elections,” he added. “Your bill does NOT responsibly fund government. It’s 12 bills rolled into one bill that continues the profligate spending that’s ruining our country. The fact that you’ve added a 13th bill to it does not make it a serious solution. Please quit insulting our constituents,” Massie responded. Your bill does NOT responsibly fund government. Speaker Johnson is fake fighting by attaching a bright shiny object (that he will later abandon) to a bill that continues our path of destructive spending. I won’t be any part of this insulting charade. I’m a h*** no,” Massie said. Like an undead but doomed zombie, the CR+Save Act is back. The CR doesn’t cut spending, and the shiny object attached to it will be dropped like a hot potato before passage. pic.twitter.com/0FdHRYTm1q — Thomas Massie (@RepThomasMassie) September 9, 2024 Newsweek reports: With just weeks before the November elections, the stakes are high, and some Republicans worry that a shutdown could hurt their chances at the polls. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has been clear in his opposition to the shutdown strategy. “One thing you cannot have is a government shutdown. It would be politically beyond stupid for us to do that right before the election, because certainly we’d get the blame,” McConnell told reporters on Tuesday. The continuing resolution (CR), which would extend government funding until March 2025, includes the SAVE Act. Johnson argued this is essential to safeguard upcoming elections, citing concerns that “millions and millions of illegals…have come across the border” and might attempt to vote illegally. However, critics, including many Democrats, note that non-citizens are already prohibited from voting in federal elections, casting doubt on the necessity of the bill. Voting for federal offices in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., is restricted to citizens only. Even if Johnson secures House approval for the bill, it is expected to fail in the Senate, which could force him to push for a more straightforward CR without the controversial provision. This approach could expose him to criticism from the GOP’s right-wing factions, particularly with elections approaching. Johnson’s leadership will also be tested when Republicans select a speaker after the November elections. If his handling of the shutdown deepens internal divisions, it could jeopardize his reelection as speaker, should the GOP retain control of the House.

Woman Convicted Of ‘Fatally’ Transmitting COVID-19 To Neighbor, ‘Grossly Negligent Homicide’

An Austrian woman was found guilty of “fatally infecting her neighbor with COVID-19,” the Associated Press reports. The conviction is reportedly the woman’s second related to the scamdemic. A judge sentenced the 54-year-old woman to four months’ suspended imprisonment and slapped her with an 800-euro fine ($886.75) for “grossly negligent homicide.” Austrian woman is found guilty of fatally infecting her neighbor with COVID-19 pic.twitter.com/54JAlmKHzr — Camus (@newstart_2024) September 16, 2024 From the Associated Press: The victim, who was also a cancer patient, died of pneumonia that was caused by the coronavirus, according to Austrian news agency APA. A virological report showed that the virus DNA matched both the deceased and the 54-year-old woman, proving that the defendant “almost 100 percent” transmitted it, an expert told the court. “I feel sorry for you personally — I think that something like this has probably happened hundreds of times,” the judge said Thursday. “But you are unlucky that an expert has determined with almost absolute certainty that it was an infection that came from you.” While the judge issued the sentence Thursday, APA reported that the verdict isn’t yet final. The names of the victim and defendant were not released in line with Austrian privacy rules. The notion that so-called ‘experts’ can prove someone transmitted an illness to another is insane and sets an ominous precedent. Despite never isolating COVID-19, they can insist someone “almost 100 percent” transmitted it to another individual. ‘Experts’ were wrong, whether by deceit or incompetence, about essentially everything related to COVID-19. Yet, individuals in positions of authority bow to them because of ‘science.’ The punishment marks the Austrian woman's second pandemic-related conviction in a year. https://t.co/Znl1egP2u8 — Newsweek (@Newsweek) September 13, 2024 After the death of a neighbor from COVID-19, an Austrian woman has been fined and given a suspended sentence for grossly negligent homicide, her second pandemic-related conviction in a year, The Associated Press reported.https://t.co/0CxucKIoJb — KSL (@KSLcom) September 17, 2024 Per Newsweek: Statements from the deceased person’s family were presented during the trial this week that said the two neighbors made contact in a stairwell on December 21, 2021. The defendant allegedly knew she had COVID-19 at that time, but she denied this and said she believed she had bronchitis. She also denied meeting with the neighbor in the stairwell. However, the defendant’s doctor reportedly told police that she had tested positive for COVID with a rapid test and indicated to him that she wouldn’t be keeping herself inside despite having the virus. According to the Associated Press, the woman was “convicted of a COVID-related offense last summer.” Austrian Woman Is Found Guilty of Fatally Infecting Her Neighbor with COVID-19 – https://t.co/GkYodrgNHb pic.twitter.com/1SKJiStnql — bioethics.com (@bioethicsdotcom) September 16, 2024 “The agency said she was sentenced to three months’ suspended imprisonment for intentionally endangering people through communicable diseases. But she was acquitted on the grossly negligent homicide charge at that time,” the outlet noted. Despite the craziness and absurdity of this conviction, it shouldn’t be a total surprise coming out of Austria. The European country brutalized residents at the height of COVID-19. The Guardian noted in 2021: Since Monday, about 2 million unvaccinated people in Austria are facing severe restrictions on their free movement after the conservative-led government took the unprecedented step of trying to suppress a powerful fourth wave of Covid-19 with a stay-at-home order for those with no proof of immunisation. Under the “lockdown for the unvaccinated”, those who have declined to take the jab and are found to have left their home for non-essential reasons can face fines of €500, rising to €1,450 if they fail to comply with checks. The measure has attracted worldwide attention, as countries across the globe are wondering if they can battle a seasonal resurgence of the virus through vaccines alone.
