Cats in History: Mayor Stubbs

Hi, I’m Dr. Lauren! Read my introduction to learn more about me and my two adventurous cats, Pancake and Tiller. Somedays, I watch cats and wonder, what would it be like to live their life of relative leisure? Sleep, eat, repeat. Seems pretty good to me. Obviously, not all cats live like this, but in general, they aren’t doing too bad. A dear friend of mine (Dougie’s mom, from a few articles back) and I were discussing this topic the other day: maybe cats have gotten this all figured out- we work for them, clean their litter box, feed them, and even buy them numerous toys and beds to sleep on. But what about cats that go the other way around, and enter the world of humans? Many of these cats aren’t well known, so I hope to take a few articles and write about some of these fascinating felines from history. Pancake and Tiller enjoy being cats of leisure. Meet Mayor Stubbs Enter, Stubbs. Or should I say, Mayor Stubbs? Found in a box with three other kittens, and the only one without a tail, Stubbs was so named. Mr. Stubbs is a local legend to many Alaskans. Voted Mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska, Mayor Stubbs had the dubious honor of being both a political figure, and a cat. So why did a cat get elected Mayor of this remote, yet gorgeous beautiful Alaskan town? I can’t really say I ever found out for certain. Certainly, he was a boon to this tourist-driven town, the gateway to visiting Denali, but what was it, specifically, that saw him rise to political power? Apocryphally, Stubbs became Mayor after a write in ballot campaign was begun when none of the human candidates were deemed appropriate. Whether that was true or not, no longer remains the point. Stubbs remained the town Mayor until his death at almost 20 years of age. And he persisted in spite of dog attacks, being shot (not in the line of political duty) and falling into the deep fryer at his local pub (it was off). I met him once, he was a true charmer. (Basically he didn’t care, and sat on the bar looking completely unexcited, for which, sadly, I can’t say the same- I even bought his t-shirt). But, regardless, it shows what extent cats can play in our lives, and our history. Especially in Alaska, land of the Midnight Sun and a truly one of the few true wild west spots left on earth. Politically, it’s a bit unpredictable. I mean, who knows what you can see from your kitchen window? Maybe the next cat, planning their political run. This article is a part of Dr. Lauren, Pancake, and Tiller's series. Robert Pattinson Earns His Living By Dying in Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17

News Mickey 17 Robert Pattinson Earns His Living By Dying in Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 Getting do-overs for capitalism By Molly Templeton | Published on September 18, 2024 Screenshot: Warner Bros. Pictures Comment 0 Share New Share Screenshot: Warner Bros. Pictures We have been waiting for this trailer, and we are not disappointed. Parasite director Bong Joon Ho, in his first film since Parasite won a pile of Oscars, is back with a new film that looks to be no less pointed than his last. Mickey 17, which Bong adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7, tells the story of a man who signs up to be an “expendable” on a distant human colony. He does not read the fine print, which says that when he dies on the (difficult, terrible) job, his body will be recreated, again and again, for more work, and more death. And he’ll remember it. Even the very brief summary makes the point obvious: From the Academy Award-winning writer/director of Parasite, Bong Joon Ho, comes his next groundbreaking cinematic experience, Mickey 17. The unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living. Bong’s social commentary is on clear display in this trailer, as is his sense of humor; the opening scene, in which a Mickey loses a hand, is played for laughs, and things just get weirder from there. Pattinson’s choice of voice is intriguing, and the supporting cast—which includes Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo—are clearly equally committed. Mickey 17 has moved release dates a few times, and is now coming to a theater near you on January 31, 2025.[end-mark] The post Robert Pattinson Earns His Living By Dying in Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 appeared first on Reactor.

Eight Engaging SFF Short Stories Told Through Letters

Books short fiction Eight Engaging SFF Short Stories Told Through Letters Epistolary short fiction has given us so much, from dragon-related correspondence and missives about the metaverse to Death’s resignation letter. By Ratika Deshpande | Published on September 18, 2024 Photo by Olga Vilkha [via Unsplash] Comment 0 Share New Share Photo by Olga Vilkha [via Unsplash] Of all the forms of notes and documents that pop up in “found fiction,” letters are perhaps my favorite. A lot is assumed and unexplained, and a collection, over time, gains a character all its own. In a story that unfolds through letters, we get to exist inside people’s heads, toeing the line between formal and personal, reserved and confessional—there’s so many opportunities to playwith the narrative. Here are eight clever and compelling examples… “The Buried Years” by Loreen Heneghan Our narrator isn’t fond of the skeletons that walk along the god’s road towards the beyond, even though he is a doctor. Empirical studies have shown that the grieving think they can recognize the skeletons of their loved ones, although they actually can’t. So it comes as a surprise when, one night, our doctor, heading to his house, finds a solitary skeleton walking by and is sure he knows who it belongs to. He is a man of reason, he reassures his betrothed in this letter, but sometimes, one has to believe what one sees with their eyes and knows in their heart. “To the (mostly) living” by J.D. Harlock Humans have become so good at doing Death’s job that Death now feels weary, “obsolete and redundant,” so It’s turning in Its short and sweet (and funny) resignation letter… “From the Editorial Page of the Falchester Weekly Review” by Marie Brennan Benjamin Talbot recently announced his discovery of a specimen of the legendary cockatrice, a creature whose existence science hasn’t been able to confirm, in the pages of the Falchester Weekly Review. Isabella Camherst, a dragon naturalist who just returned from a voyage in the very same region where Talbot found the creature, writes to the magazine, expressing her curiosity about his discovery and her enthusiasm for his article on the same—sharing knowledge benefits everyone, after all. Talbot is initially encouraging, but when Isabella mentions that she herself hadn’t heard of the cockatrice during her research in the region, Talbot takes offense at her doubt and isn’t very polite in questioning her merit. Isabella doesn’t suffer such attitudes, however, and an exciting debate follows, with both parties exchanging some very cleverly-worded, entertaining letters. I’ve been an ardent fan of Brennan’s Memoirs of Lady Trent books, and if you like Isabella here, you would enjoy hearing from her about her entire career as a renowned (and the first female) dragon naturalist—especially when voiced by Kate Reading, who narrates the audiobooks. “Not Quite What We’re Looking for Right Now” by Jana Bianchi As a writer, I’m quite familiar with rejection letters, many of which contain the phrase “not quite what we’re looking for right now.” In this 312-word story, Bianchi takes the dreaded rejection letter and turns into something much more horrible, but in a way that makes all my actual rejections seem a lot more pleasant by comparison. I’m curious to know what the acceptance letter sent to the author for this story looked like. “Therefore What the Multiverse Has Joined Together, Let No One Separate” by Dominica Phetteplace It’s hard to describe this little story without giving away the depth and surprise that comes from knowing, towards the end, the sender and receiver of this letter, which describes a picture that came out of the only known white hole. Yxa was the one whose work made it all possible, although she never got to see the full picture—of a beautiful flower—before she died. There’s work to be done now—policies to be debated, risks of being attacked through the hole by something malicious to be calculated. There’s also hope to maintain and good things to take care of, which is what the letter aims to do. A short, beautiful story. “Customer Feedback (Secondhand Alchemical Goods)” by Arnav Sood All our narrator wanted was a Philosopher’s Stone. Instead, they were given a Psychologist’s Stone and told that it was pretty much the same thing. It wasn’t, and now our narrator wants a refund. But there’s a strict “no refund” policy, so alternatives are offered, none of which are what the narrator needs. Deeply disappointed, they decide some action needs to be taken, which is exactly what they’ve done with this letter of customer feedback. “Mirage-Stories” by Ernesto Fuentes Tenolo used to be a pirate, but now he’s in the desert, among a people who think his tales of the sea—a place with so much water—are mirage-stories. In this short, optimistic letter to Jojober, a fellow pirate, Tenolo talks about the expectation that he’s destined return to the sea in due time. He thinks he’ll stay where he is, however, for he’s found something that a pirate can never obtain, and he wants to share it with Jojober too. “Subject: More Monsters Will Not Make Us Safer” by Paul Crenshaw As if school shootings weren’t dystopian enough, in this story, Paul Crenshaw describes a version of the United States where children in schools are protected by the likes of T. rexes, ogres, and dragons from dangers such as firenadoes, reverse lightning, and, of course, school shooters. Rick T. Edge understands their necessity, but disagrees very much with the decision to increase the number of monsters looking after the students. These kids, he argues in this letter, need to learn how to defend themselves without the protection of monsters. How else, he asks, will they survive in this harsh world? [end-mark] The post Eight Engaging SFF Short Stories Told Through Letters appeared first on Reactor.

America Should Jail People for “Misinformation” and “Propaganda”

Author of How to Prep When You’re Broke and Bloom Where You’re Planted online course If you haven’t seen losing presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s attempt to pimp her fourth freakin’ memoir with fellow propagandist Rachel Maddow, let me spare you the excruciating 9 minutes and drill it down to this. Hillary Clinton calls for criminal charges and civil penalties against Americans “engaged” in spreading “propaganda.” To make her argument against free speechj, she invokes the Russiagate scam that itself was the product of her campaign’s own propaganda. Speaking of which, the… pic.twitter.com/oRpwvwN4Ni — Aaron Maté (@aaronjmate) September 17, 2024 She also wants to drill down on the evils of Trump and to heck with bias. In her rather muddled opinion, it’s biased to be unbiased. Here she is calling President Trump a “threat to democracy” just a day after another attempt was made on his life, and in the same interview in which she called for free speech that she doesn’t like to be punished with a potential prison sentence. Just barely 24 hours after Trump was almost kiIIed in an ass*ss*nation attempt, Hillary Clinton is on MSNBC calling Trump a danger to the world. Is this what toning down the rhetoric looks like? pic.twitter.com/ayacAmQRFm — Libs of TikTok (@libsoftiktok) September 17, 2024 It’s a good thing that Hillary Clinton abjectly failed in her efforts to become the president of the United States back in 2016, but it’s obvious that’s a wound that never healed because she just keeps picking at that darn scab and making it bleed. It’s also good that she isn’t running again this time because nobody picked her to do so. Of course, nobody picked Kamala Harris either, but that’s beside today’s point. The reason I bring this up… We’re in for some real problems if we go the way of China…and Russia….and the UK…and Germany. They’re putting people in jail or work camps longer for voicing unapproved opinions than they are for molesting children and whacking citizens with a machete. For years, I have been accused of sharing misinformation and propaganda. My site has been defunded and downgraded by the same types of people who support the ideas expressed by failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. (It never gets old to type “failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton,” and I’ll do some version of that when I mention her name until the day I retire my laptop.) Our own government has been involved with the silencing of anybody right of that US Representative from Minnesota, Ilhan Omar. Ironically, many of the things that we were condemned for saying did, in fact, turn out to be true. Many of the things they swore were the real truth were actually false. Hunter Biden’s laptop was real. The “rules” for protecting folks from Covid were totally made up. The mRNA shots were not actually neither harmless nor effective. Our justice system has been weaponized against those with unpopular opinions. VP wannabe Tim Walz lied about his military service and a whole bunch of other stuff. Facebook really DID silence conservatives and libertarians at the behest of the Biden administration. But we’re the ones who should go to jail? Imagine if the jails were filled with the people who actually spread the lies… people like Clinton, Fauci, our politicians, and our so-called journalists would be the wokest prison gang ever. Never forget that these people want us to shut up and go away. Never forget that what Hillary Clinton, who lost the 2016 election to Trump, said in this interview above is what they want for us. And we’re only a few steps away from her dystopian image of a perfect America. What are your thoughts? About Daisy Daisy Luther is a coffee-swigging, adventure-seeking, globe-trotting blogger. Experts Predict Up to 2.7M Votes Will Be Cast by Illegal Immigrants

Do you plan to vote this November? You’re not alone. Experts say somewhere between 1.5 million and 2.7 million illegal immigrants are likely to cast a ballot in the 2024 elections, affecting races from dogcatcher to president of the United States. The historic flood of illegal immigrants during the Biden-Harris administration has also padded voter rolls, thanks to controversial federal legislation from the Clinton administration. If illegal immigrants and other noncitizens vote in the same proportion as in previous U.S. elections, the number will range anywhere from 1.5 million to nearly 3 million votes. “A 2014 academic journal found that 6.4% of noncitizens voted in 2008,” Kerri Toloczko, executive director of Election Integrity Network and senior adviser to the Only Citizens Vote Coalition, told The Washington Stand. “There are about 24 million noncitizens in the U.S. right now. If they voted only at the same rate of 6.4% this year as they did in 2008, they would account for 1.5 million votes.”That ponderous number of unlawful votes may just be the tip of the iceberg. “Based on the increased noncitizen activity at state DMVs, and the work of left-wing voter registration activists, this 6.4% could be much higher than it was in 2008. We could be looking at over 2 million unlawful noncitizen votes,” she told the Washington Stand. Her estimate largely dovetails with a previous study showing 2.7 million noncitizens are likely to vote in the 2024 election. The author of that study—James D. Agresti, the president and co-founder of the think tank and fact-check website Just Facts—confirmed to the Washington Stand that “the most comprehensive, transparent, and rigorous study on this matter found that about 2 [million] to 5 million noncitizens are illegally registered to vote, and aggressive attempts to debunk the study have completely failed.” Opponents of election integrity laws minimize the problem by claiming it is already illegal for foreigners to vote in U.S. elections. But, unlike other purported threats, the problem truly holds the power to undermine our democracy, election experts say. “The Left likes to use phrases like, ‘It’s not that widespread,’” Toloczko observed. “But how many does a moral relativist uninterested in upholding the law think is too many?” And “if every unlawful vote cancels out the vote of a lawful citizen voter, how many of those are acceptable?” Would 2 million unlawful votes be “enough to possibly make a difference in House and Senate races, and even the presidency?” she asked. “You bet.” Agresti noted that “the claim that noncitizens rarely vote is based on studies with absurd methodologies. For example, they measure the prevalence of this crime by merely counting convictions for it.” This is “ridiculous,” Agresti told the Washington Stand. He compared the statistic to measuring the number of Americans who illegally use narcotics “based on guilty pleas and verdicts.” “The same applies to any other law that isn’t strictly enforced, like driving above the speed limit,” he added. The House of Representatives released a 22-page report in June documenting illegal immigrants voting in the United States. Under current law, 17 cities in California, Maryland, and Vermont as well as the District of Columbia allow noncitizens to vote. While the noncitizens are supposed to vote only in local elections, “mistakes” have been reported. save_act_white_paperDownload Toloczko highlighted documented cases of foreigners illegally voting in U.S. elections. “The federal government recently indicted a group of noncitizens from 15 different countries on federal voting charges. Texas recently purged 6,500 noncitizens from its voter rolls—30% of whom had voting records,” Toloczko told TWS, expressing similar thoughts in The Stream. Illegal immigration impacts U.S. elections in a second way: Counting noncitizens in the U.S. Census redistributes eight congressional seats and, with them, their Electoral College votes which elect the president, a team of immigration scholars found. America’s teeming illegal immigrant population gives additional congressional seats to California (3), Texas (2), New York, New Jersey, and Florida (one each); and it takes seats away from Alabama, Idaho, Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Ohio, Rhode Island, and West Virginia (one seat each). Illegal immigrants alone transfer one seat each from Ohio, Alabama, and Minnesota to California, Texas, and New York, the study from the Center for Immigration Studies found. House Republicans have sought to address the problem by passing a number of border security and election integrity measures, including the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act (H.R. 8281), which would require local election officials to verify someone’s U.S. citizenship status before registering that person to vote. It passed the House of Representatives in July. “States are prohibited from requiring documentary proof of U.S. citizenship,” thanks to court interpretations of the 1993 National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), Rep. Andy Barr (R-Ky.) told Fox Business show “Mornings with Maria” on Tuesday. “Democrats who vote against that show what they are really up to—that they want noncitizens to vote and rig our elections.” Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., has called the bill’s passage “a generation-defining moment.” Johnson favors attaching the election integrity bill to a must-pass continuing resolution to keep the government funded past the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30 and avert a government shutdown. Yet Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has declared the bill dead on arrival in the Senate. “What is he afraid of?” Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., asked on Tuesday morning on Fox Business. The underlying numbers behind the 1.5 million to 2.7 million noncitizen vote count may undercount the extent of the problem. Yale University researchers estimated the size of the U.S. illegal immigrant population at 16 million to 29 million in 2016, before the Biden-Harris administration enacted border policies that saw record-breaking levels of illegal immigration every year to date. While administration officials channeled illegal immigration into ports of entry and other means such as the CBP One app, which reduce the number of entries on paper during this presidential election year, experts say the number of overall immigrants entering the U.S. has remained the same or increased. Americans have increasingly groaned under the strain of illegal immigration. Video footage has shown members of the Venezuelan transnational criminal organization Tren de Aragua rampaging through the Denver suburb of Aurora, Colorado, where they reportedly terrorize and extort residents of multiple apartment buildings. The Biden-Harris administration has placed roughly 20,000 Haitians in the city of Springfield, Ohio—a city of 58,000 Americans—where they have proceeded to drive up housing costs, underbid American workers for jobs, and engage in a spree of car crashes. The problem has reportedly spread to the nearby town of Tremont. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican, recently sent the city millions of dollars and deployed a team of Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers to get the deadly traffic problem under control. Although the legacy media attempted to pin a large reported number of bomb threats against Springfield schools and other institutions on Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance, a senator from Ohio, and other politicians who have highlighted the city’s plight, DeWine verified that officials determined that all 33 threats were “hoaxes” that originated overseas. Mayors of Aurora and Tremont say they were not consulted about the resettling of these foreigners in their cities. A Axios/Harris Poll released in April showed a majority of Americans support the mass deportation of illegal immigrants back to their countries of origin. Overall, 51% of U.S. citizens back the Trump-endorsed policy of deportations, including about half (46%) of all registered Independents. A surprisingly high 42% of Democrats support mass deportations, likely fueled by the increasing number of black Americans—who have voted in the past as high as 9 out of 10 for the Democratic presidential candidate—who see their neighborhoods affected by a surging illegal immigrant population, especially in sanctuary cities. Their cities’ Democratic leaders often divert taxpayer funds, and deny taxpayer-funded services to U.S. citizens, in favor of illegal immigrants. As the government funding drama plays out at the U.S. Capitol, America First Legal has filed numerous lawsuits contending that two provisions of federal law—8 U.S.C. § 1373(c) and 8 U.S.C. § 16—already allow state and local officials to obtain information about applicants’ citizenship status before registration. Combined-LetterDownload “The reason why [Democrats have] got that wide-open border is so they can get as many illegals in here and get them to vote, so they can dominate the American vote,” Rep. Mike Ezell, R-Miss., told “Washington Watch” in July. “They want to dominate the House, the Senate, and the White House.” “They want to get elected by any means necessary,” Ezell said.
