Photo: Allison Johnson / The Verge iOS 18 has a new feature that lets you wirelessly restore an iPhone 16 using another iPhone or an iPad, 9to5Mac reports. 9to5Mac says it was able to simulate the new recovery method. “Essentially, when the iPhone 16 enters Recovery Mode for some reason, users can simply place it next to another iPhone or iPad to start the firmware recovery,” according to 9to5Mac. “The other device will download a new iOS firmware and transfer it to the bricked device.” Apparently, any device on iOS 18 can do the restoration, but only the iPhone 16 lineup of phones can actually be restored using this method. The debut trailer for the sci-fi film — which is helmed by Parasite director Bong Joon-ho and stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes — premiered Tuesday evening. According to the trailer’s description, Barnes “has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living.” The movie is based on the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton, about “a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim.” The book follows the seventh incarnation of the titular Mickey, but it appears in the movie he dies quite a few more times. I've been using ChatGPT for quite some time now, and all our conversations have one thing in common. I, the human in the chat, initiate the conversation with a simple or complex prompt. The better the prompt, the more useful ChatGPT's reply. That's something I learned quite early in my ChatGPT experience. You can tweak and correct along the way, of course. All of these chats with ChatGPT, some more serious than others, made me realize there will come a time when I'll talk to and text an AI chatbot more than I do the people in my life. This has nothing to do with humanizing the AI or getting attached to it. Instead, I'll use the AI to answer questions, control my devices, and make my life easier. All of that will involve plenty of conversing, whether with ChatGPT or a different AI entity. I've never considered the possibility of AI initiating a conversation on its own. But it looks like OpenAI is already testing out the feature for both text and voice conversations. ChatGPT can message the user first, which is a first for OpenAI and the industry.
