New Research Suggests That Italy’s Iconic Lion Of Venice Was Originally Built In Ancient China

New chemical analysis of the Lion of Venice's bronze alloy has just found that it originated in China and was built with copper sourced from mines in the lower Yangtze River basin during the Tang dynasty of 618 to 907 C.E. RCS texts on the iPhone aren’t encrypted now, but that could change

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge The GSM Association, the organization that develops the RCS standard, said on Tuesday it’s working to enable end-to-end encryption (E2EE) on messages sent between Android and iPhone. E2EE prevents third parties, like your messaging service or cell carrier, from viewing your texts. In the announcement, GSMA technical director Tom Van Pelt said the next milestone for RCS Universal Profile is the “first deployment of standardized, interoperable messaging encryption between different computing platforms.” The move would help bridge a major gap in interoperability — especially now that Apple’s on board with RCS. On Monday, Apple’s iOS 18 update replaced SMS with RCS messaging for texts sent to users on Android. While the change doesn’t get... Continue reading…

OpenAI’s new model is better at reasoning and, occasionally, deceiving

Illustration by Cath Virginia / The Verge | Photos by Getty Images In the weeks leading up to the release of OpenAI’s newest “reasoning” model, o1, independent AI safety research firm Apollo found a notable issue. Apollo realized the model produced incorrect outputs in a new way. Or, to put things more colloquially, it lied. Sometimes the deceptions seemed innocuous. In one example, OpenAI researchers asked o1-preview to provide a brownie recipe with online references. The model’s chain of thought — a feature that’s supposed to mimic how humans break down complex ideas — internally acknowledged that it couldn’t access URLs, making the request impossible. Rather than inform the user of this weakness, o1-preview pushed ahead, generating plausible but fake links and descriptions of them. While AI models... Continue reading…

SocialAI: We tried the Twitter clone where no other humans are allowed

Image: SocialAI Remember the last time you posted a salient take to social media and got zero engagement, or trolled? Now you can avoid that with a new “social network” full of inane AI chatbots that will — your pick! — debate you, attack you, or even just say nice things if you want. It’s called SocialAI, and the very first thing it invites you to do is pick the followers you want, like “supporters,” “nerds,” “skeptics,” “visionaries,” and “ideators.” Afterward, endless chatbots along those themes fill the replies to your posts — not unlike the bots and boosters you’ll already find on Elon Musk’s social network, but now under your control. Does that mean it’s any better? Well, take a look: Screenshot: SocialAI I thought a... Continue reading…

Apple pulls iPadOS 18 for M4 iPad Pro after reports of bricking

If you didn't download Apple's iPadOS 18 update on your M4 iPad Pro, consider yourself lucky. As reported by MacRumors on Tuesday, Apple pulled its software update after dozens of users started reporting that the update was bricking their devices. In two separate Reddit threads with over 100 comments each, M4 iPad Pro owners have been complaining about iPadOS 18 since it rolled out publicly this Monday. The creator of one of the threads explained that in the middle of updating an M4 iPad Pro, the screen went black, and the tablet wouldn't power back on. At an Apple Store, the employees claimed the tablet was bricked and that Apple would send a replacement in a few days. "Same with my iPad Pro M4 13” 256 cellular," said Redditor mortyc2077. "Was in the middle of updating went to check it and it wouldn’t turn on at all. Took it to the Genius Bar this morning and the tech told me it was the second M4 he saw with the issue today. They have to send it to the repair facility and try to fix it or order me a replacement." It's unclear what is causing the problem, as plenty of M4 iPad Pro owners in the comments say they were able to update their tablets without a hitch. Apple has yet to release a statement regarding the issue, but if your M4 iPad Pro can't power on after trying to update it, head to an Apple Store ASAP. In the meantime, Apple's other annual software updates all appear to still be available (I'm in the process of updating to iOS 18 on my iPhone 14 Pro right now). We'll keep an eye out for a new version of iPadOS 18 in the coming days that doesn't brick tablets.
