A group of high-profile free speech advocates including government officials, journalists, and academics have signed a letter to Brazil condemning the government’s censorship of X, formerly Twitter. Last month, Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered that X be suspended in Brazil after the social media platform resisted demands to censor certain political accounts. The judge’s decision banned Brazilians from using the social media platform owned by Elon Musk. X responded to the judge’s decision in a statement, accusing the judge of illegally ordering the social media platform to “censor his political opponents,” including “a duly elected Senator and a 16-year-old girl.” “Unlike other social media and technology platforms, we will not comply in secret with illegal orders,” X Global Government Affairs said. Brazilians using a VPN to access X can be fined nearly $9,000 a day. In their letter, which was spearheaded by Alliance Defending Freedom, a prominent free speech law firm, the free speech advocates condemned Brazil for “judicial overreach” and “stifling free discourse and violating Brazil’s own constitution, which prohibits ‘[a]ny and all censorship of a political, ideological, and artistic nature.'” Am I Racist? The open letter to Brazil’s Parliament was signed by five U.S. Attorneys General, former British Prime Minister Liz Truss, Princeton academic Dr. Robert George, author Rod Dreher, and Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon. Also signing the letter were podcaster Tammy Peterson, who is psychologist Jordan Peterson’s wife, “Twitter Files” journalist Michael Shellenberger, and former Kansas Senator Sam Brownback, among dozens of conservative influencers and other international advocates for free speech. “If this censorship in Brazil is allowed to persist, it could set a dangerous precedent that quickly spreads,” the letter reads. “Recently, other world leaders have expressed pro-censorship sentiments, and there is no quicker path to the demise of democracy than the erosion of free speech.” The letter urges the Brazilian government to “restore the free flow of information, and respect the rights of its citizens to express their views without fear of retribution.” “The courts should immediately lift the ban on the use of X within Brazil,” Jeremy Tedesco, Alliance Defending Freedom’s senior vice president of corporate engagement, said in a statement to The Daily Wire. “This is unlawful and deprives Brazil’s citizens of their freedoms under their own Constitution,” Tedesco said. “This letter shows that prominent leaders are taking this issue seriously, as this is a dangerous global precedent to set. Freedom of expression is not negotiable, nor is it a privilege — it is the cornerstone of every democratic society. We must defend it whenever it is under threat, whether in Brazil or anywhere else in the world.” The letter is now open to the public for signing and had more than 1,600 signatures as of Thursday while rapidly gaining more.

Justin Timberlake is expected to take a plea deal following his New York DWI (driving while intoxicated) arrest in June, avoiding a DWI misdemeanor, which carries time behind bars. The 43-year-old pop singer’s 2024 tour is expected to continue following reports that Timberlake will submit a guilty plea at his court date on Friday for a lesser charge after he initially pled not guilty to the DWI charge, the Associated Press reported. The original DWI charge carried a maximum of a year behind bars plus a $2,500 fine. If he takes the plea deal, he will only have to pay a fine between $300 and $500, TMZ reported. It comes after surveillance footage from the night of the arrest in June shows Timberlake’s 2025 BMW driving down a deserted street near the American Hotel in Sag Harbor in the Hamptons. The arrest report says Timberlake was stopped after a police officer noticed him ignoring a stop sign and “fail[ing] to keep on the right side of the roadway,” People noted. The “Cry Me a River” singer was charged with one count of driving while intoxicated and was given citations for running a stop sign and failure to keep in lane. In August, Timberlake appeared in court virtually where he pleaded not guilty for a second time to the charge in Sag Harbor Village Justice Court, NBC News noted. During the hearing, Justice Carl Irace announced that the pop star’s out-of-state New York license would be suspended because Timberlake refused to take a breathalyzer test on June 18 when he was pulled over, the outlet noted. The judge also blasted the singer’s attorney, Edward Burke, for his “irresponsible” comments, claiming that it “comes off as an attempt to poison the case before it even begins,” NBC News noted. Justice Irace even threatened Burke with a gag order if he continued to make such comments. However, the judge never shared exactly what those comments were, the outlet noted. The hearing took place after Burke claimed the case would be dismissed, alleging the police screwed up when they arrested Timberlake, as previously reported. At the time, Burke told the court that his client was “not intoxicated” when he was arrested. “The police made a number of very significant errors in this case,” Burke said in his statement. “Justin respects law enforcement and the very important job that they do. A judge in Georgia dismissed two criminal charges against former President Donald Trump on Thursday, ruling that prosecutors did not have the authority to bring the charges. Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee ruled that state prosecutors could not file the charges because a U.S. Supreme Court decision “preempts the State’s ability to prosecute perjury and false filings in a federal district court.” The decision meant that “Counts 14, 15, and 27 must be quashed,” McAfee ruled. Out of the three counts that were dismissed, two of them were against Trump, including Count 15, Conspiracy to commit filing false documents; and Count 27, Filing false documents. Trump was not charged with Count 14, Criminal attempt to commit filing false documents, but others in the racketeering case were. Trump has now defeated five of the original 13 charges he was hit with in District Attorney Fani Willis’ controversial indictment from August 2023. Am I Racist?
