This life-size Lego McLaren P1 can hit almost 40mph

Lego’s McLaren P1 isn’t quite as fast as the real deal. | Image: Lego After releasing a 24-inch-long scale replica of the McLaren P1 earlier this year, Lego has now debuted a full-size drivable version of the hypercar built from over 342,817 Technic pieces and powered by hundreds of Lego electric motors. That eclipses the 3,893 pieces that go into building Lego’s 1:8-scale McLaren P1 model. The company says the full-scale version used 393 types of Technic components, including 11 specifically manufactured for the replica. That would make it hard to build a copy yourself, but you’d also struggle to find the time. Lego says it took 6,134 hours to design and plan its P1 and 2,210 hours to assemble it. Lego opted to build with Technic components instead of its standard bricks as it allowed the company’s... Continue reading…

Apple gets FDA authorization to turn the AirPods Pro into hearing aids

Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge Just days after Apple announced a new hearing aid feature for the second-generation AirPods Pro, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the software that powers this functionality. In a press release, the FDA describes Apple’s solution as “the first over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid software device.” The feature “was evaluated in a clinical study with 118 subjects with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss,” according to the FDA, and “the results demonstrated that subjects who used the HAF self-fitting strategy achieved similar perceived benefit as subjects who received professional fitting of the same device.” Enabling the AirPods Pro to double as clinical-grade hearing aids is one of several new features that... Google unlists misleading Gemini video

Screenshot by Jay Peters / The Verge Google has unlisted an impressive Gemini demo video it posted last December that seemed remarkably conversational. BBB National Programs’ National Advertising Division (NAD), an ad industry watchdog, inquired whether the video “accurately depicts the performance of Gemini in responding to user voice and video prompts.” Google chose to end the inquiry by ending its promotion of the video that showed Gemini quickly responding to various spoken prompts, such as identifying parts of drawings and creating a geography game on the fly. Buried in the description was a disclaimer indicating the demo might not be as good as it seemed: “For the purposes of this demo, latency has been reduced and Gemini outputs have been shortened for brevity.” A... AirPods 4 have a hidden button: Here’s what it does

Open the AirPods case near an Apple device like an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, and the two devices will pair via Bluetooth. It's supposed to "just work," eliminating the hassles of pairing wireless earbuds to a different device. AirPods also have a physical button on the case that lets you pair them with devices. This comes in handy if the previous method fails. The button also lets you reset the AirPods to factory settings. Apple did something different with the new AirPods 4 models when it comes to pairing. The physical button is gone now. Apple has replaced it with a hidden capacitive button you won't see. If the auto-pairing feature fails, you'll need to tap that hidden button to pair the AirPods 4 with your iPhone, Android device, or any other gadget. It's also the button to tap when you want to reset the earphones. Continue reading... The post AirPods 4 have a hidden button: Here’s what it does appeared first on BGR. AirPods Pro 2 hearing aid features just got FDA approval

During the iPhone 16 keynote, Apple announced that it would offer hearing aid features to AirPods Pro 2 owners. Today, the FDA has approved the company's tech, which means Cupertino can now offer this software for earbud users as an over-the-counter hearing aid device. FDA's press release says: "Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the first over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid software device, Hearing Aid Feature, intended to be used with compatible versions of the Apple AirPods Pro headphones. Once installed and customized to the user’s hearing needs, the Hearing Aid Feature enables compatible versions of the AirPods Pro to serve as an OTC hearing aid intended to amplify sounds for individuals 18 years or older with perceived mild to moderate hearing impairment." Early this week, Apple said it wants to offer the first "all-in-one hearing health experience" that focuses on prevention, awareness, and assistance. You'll be able to configure the AirPods Pro 2 as hearing aids on the iPhone. Image source: Apple Inc. Prevention:  The ear tips help to provide passive noise reduction, while the H2 chip helps to actively reduce louder, more intermittent noise at 48,000 times per second. On by default, across all listening modes, Hearing Protection is helpful in a variety of loud settings. Plus, with an all-new multiband high dynamic range algorithm Awareness: In about five minutes, users can take a clinical-grade hearing test based on the standard clinical approach called pure-tone audiometry. The Hearing Test feature leverages advanced acoustic science and provides users with an interactive experience. When a user completes the test, they will see an easy-to-understand summary of their results, including a number representing hearing loss in each ear, a classification, and recommendations. Assistance: Using the personalized hearing profile from the Hearing Test, this new feature seamlessly transforms AirPods Pro into a clinical-grade hearing aid. After setup, the feature enables personalized dynamic adjustments so users have the sounds around them boosted in real time. This helps them better engage in conversation, and keeps them connected to the people and environment around them.  This week, Apple released a new firmware update for AirPods Pro 2 with several new iOS 18 features. However, it's unclear if the hearing aids feature was there. Apple hasn't announced if it's releasing a new firmware to enable these functions or if this is a server-side change it can make any time. BGR will let you know once we learn more about how AirPods Pro 2 hearing aid features start working.
