His speech to the New York Economic Club on Thursday, however, was the first time he had publicly endorsed the idea. It was also the first time Trump said that Musk has agreed to head the body. He did not detail precisely how such a commission would operate, besides saying it would develop a plan to eliminate “fraud and improper payments” within six months of being formed. “This commission will develop an action plan to totally eliminate fraud and improper payments within six months,” Trump said, according to CNBC. “The commission aims to conduct a comprehensive audit of federal finances and operations, targeting fraud and unnecessary spending. Trump also intends to roll back regulations and rescind unspent funds from the Biden administration,” Mario Nawfal noted. He also reinforced his commitment to eliminating taxes on tips and Social Security benefits. A recent study by the Penn Wharton Budget Model estimated that Trump’s proposals could spike federal deficits by almost five times more than those that Harris has so far unveiled. It is an open question whether the savings from the Musk-inspired government efficiency commission would be canceled out by those fiscal deficit increases.
