Patriotic Frat Bros Kick Off Semester With ‘Flagstock’ Rager As Campuses Brace For Protests

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—The fraternity brothers at the University of North Carolina got their “rager” on Monday night after their decision to stand up to anti-Israel protests and protect the American flag inspired more than $500,000 in donations to throw them a party. “If you had enough courage to defend our flag, then by God we have enough courage to show up in your backyard and play you a concert!” said country star John Rich to a crowd of the fraternity brothers and their friends.  Rich and his Big & Rich partner, Big Kenny, headlined the event, which also included acts by John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting, Aaron Lewis of Staind, Rome Ramirez of Sublime, and a final act by singer Lee Greenwood, whose performance of “God Bless the USA” was paired with a fireworks show.  “For the boys of Chapel Hill,” Greenwood said before singing the song known as the modern-day national anthem, with the crowd. Jason Calderon, the president of UNC’s Zeta Beta Tau chapter who was one of the fraternity brothers who helped save the flag, said he was excited about flagstock finally happening. We went to Flagstock, the $500k party thrown for the American flag-protecting fraternity brothers of UNC. The concert featured acts by @johnondrasik, @johnrich, @RomeRamirez, and @TheLeeGreenwood — as well as military fly overs and a fireworks show. Here were the highlights: pic.twitter.com/D0CqKNRdfP — Daily Wire (@realDailyWire) September 5, 2024 “I think the event is a celebration of something good that happened,” Calderon told The Daily Wire. “I think it’s a good way to show that the people standing against hate were on the right side of history.” “We weren’t going to let the anti-American rhetoric and anti-Israel rhetoric be the story of the day at UNC,” he added. Ondrasik, who kicked off the concert with his hit song “Superman,” dedicated the performance to the hostages and families of the six hostages found on Sunday murdered by Hamas. “Part of me did not want to come here today, but I know Rachel [Goldberg-Polin] and all of the hostage families want us to continue their fight,” he told the crowd from his piano. “So as I play Superman, let’s all say a prayer for all our hostages.” The private event was attended by hundreds of students and other guests on a large field owned by the American Legion of Chapel Hill—students were bussed 15 minutes away from campus to the venue, which was kept a secret until shortly before the event due to security concerns.  In addition to students and their friends, it was also attended by a group of Israelis, one of whom was fighting in Gaza as a member of the Israeli military when the UNC fraternity brothers went viral. One of the IDF reservists told The Daily Wire that their actions were inspiring to Israelis at war with Hamas.  “We were in Khan Younis one of the main cities in Gaza, and I showed my soldiers this picture,” said Benny Scherlow, who is also an American citizen. “I called my congressman and I told him,  ‘We are fighting in Gaza for the Israeli flag, and those guys are in the U.S. are fighting for the American flag. This is the same war.’”  When asked about the criticism the event received for having a party while hostages and innocent people are suffering during the war, Scherlow pointed out that celebrating life even in hard times is at the core of Israeli culture. “We understand that if you do not dance again, if you do not continue our life, if you do not continue raising the Israeli flag and going with a proud Israel identity, all of this war and what we are doing, there is no reason for it,” said Scherlow, who ended up being one of the last people on the dance floor enjoying a set by TWINSICK around midnight. Patrick Nanney, a freshman, said he was proud to join the historically Jewish fraternity Zeta Beta Tau this year but found it challenging to start college while there is a lot of division. “I’m a freshman at UNC which has definitely been difficult making the college decision at the same time that protests are happening and you see such division at a big school,” he said. “I see no reason to not be proud of being associated with people who are Jewish.” Though the event was made possible by the more than half a million dollars donated, almost all the artists did it free of charge. When Rich thanked the artists and crews that helped put on the event, he said many “did it on their own dime.” “You know why? Because they know there’s only one of two choices coming up here soon. It’s communism versus freedom, and we’re going to pick freedom every single time,” he said. The event included a VIP tent with ice sculptures, beer pong, corn hole, beer, and food catered by Hooters, whose waitresses were in attendance. It also featured craft beer and other beverages from a local brewery.  Organizers made every attempt to keep the event non-partisan, though one singer, Staind’s Aaron Lewis, did include the phrases “F*** Joe Biden” and “Let’s Go Brandon” in one of his songs. Liberal journalists still made efforts to undermine the event — on the morning before it took place, the New York Times cited a handful of fraternity brothers to make the claim that nobody wanted it to happen. And in its aftermath, a local North Carolina outlet claimed that the students were forced to pay for beers at the “rager.” The Daily Wire has obtained receipts for the event that prove otherwise: it actually spent more than $9,000 on beers and seltzers for the guests, and additional thousands catering the event, which wasn’t open to the public. The largest expenses of the event included the high-tech stage, security, buses for students, and insurance.  John Noonan, a military veteran who organized the “rager” fundraiser and was in attendance, posted to the many donors after the show: “The mission of Pints for Patriots was accomplished at 11:22pm Eastern time on September 2nd.”

Jamie Foxx Says He Will Open Up About His ‘Serious Health Scare’ At Stand-Up Show

Jamie Foxx said he will open up about the “serious health scare” that landed him in the hospital in 2023 at his upcoming stand-up show, “One More Chance: An Evening with Jamie Foxx.” In a post on Instagram from the 56-year-old actor/comedian, Foxx wrote with a tease: “What Had Happened Was”: “An Evening with Jamie Foxx” that will take place October 3, 4, and 5 in Atlanta. “Join us for an unforgettable one-man show as Jamie Foxx takes the stage to share his journey through a serious health scare, filled with humor, heart, and inspiration!” the post read. “Experience Jamie Foxx like never before in this intimate and engaging performance, as he opens up about his struggles, triumphs, and everything in between,” it added. “Get ready for a night of laughter, reflection, and genuine connection.” It comes more than a year after the actor was hospitalized in April 2023 for what, at the time, was described as a “medical complication” by his daughter, actress Corrine Foxx, in a post on Instagram.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Jamie Foxx (@iamjamiefoxx) In Corrine’s original post, she wrote, “From the Foxx Family: We wanted to share that, my father, Jamie Foxx, experienced a medical complication yesterday. Luckily, due to quick action and great care, he is already on his way to recovery. We know how beloved he is and appreciate your prayers. The family asks for privacy during this time. Much love, The Foxx Family.” Since that time, very little information as to what Foxx went through those weeks in the hospital has been released. Tickets for “Am I Racist?” are on sale NOW! Buy here for a theater near you. Earlier this year, Foxx was caught on camera while in Phoenix speaking a bit about what he went through, sharing with fans that he recalled asking for an Advil because of a headache and woke up 20 days later with no memory of what happened. “April of last year, I had a bad headache,” Foxx said in a clip posted on X. “I asked my boy for an Advil.” Foxx then snapped his fingers and told the crowd, “I was gone for 20 days … I don’t remember anything.” “So they told me, I’m in Atlanta, and they told me, my sister and my daughter took me to the first doctor,” Foxx continued, saying that the doctor ended up giving him a cortisone shot. “Next doctor said, ‘Something is going on up there,’” Foxx added as he pointed to his head. Foxx did not want to say what exactly the doctor said. “Yeah, I don’t want to say on camera, but it was…” he added as he trailed off. During the star’s acceptance speech in March at the 7th Annual AAFCA Special Achievement Awards, Foxx promised to open up about what he went through in 2023. “I’m so thankful and I get emotional because it’s beyond the scope,” Foxx said during an acceptance speech. “I had some people in my life that really made sure I was here because it was dire straits.” “I take things differently now because you just don’t know,” he added. “Everybody wants to know what happened and I’m gonna tell you what happened but I got to do it in my way.” Related: Jamie Foxx Talks Health Scare, Waking Up With No Memory Of 20-Day Period

Navy Commander Fired Over Embarrassing Gun Mishap

Commander Cameron Yaste, a seasoned officer of the U.S. Navy, has been relieved of his duties following a viral photo showing him holding a rifle with a backward-mounted scope. Yaste, who was serving as the commanding officer of the destroyer USS John S. McCain, faced public ridicule after the photo was posted on social media in April. The mistake sparked an online firestorm, with many questioning his competence, ultimately leading to his dismissal four months later. The incident occurred during a training exercise when Yaste was photographed in a firing stance, unaware that the rifle scope was backward. The image quickly circulated across social media platforms, drawing harsh criticism not just from the general public but also from within military circles. The Marines, in particular, took a jab at the Navy, sharing a picture of one of their own using a properly mounted rifle, captioning it with the phrase "Clear Sight Picture". Remember this guy? He just got fired. Cmdr. Cameron Yaste was relieved of his duties as commanding officer of the USS John S. McCain, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer now operating in the Gulf of Oman. Yaste was photographed earlier this year firing an M-4 rifle, which some… pic.twitter.com/lX0O1R40iP — Stars and Stripes (@starsandstripes) August 30, 2024 The U.S. Navy issued a statement explaining that Yaste’s removal was due to a "loss of confidence in his ability to command." The USS John S. McCain, a guided-missile destroyer currently deployed in the Middle East, plays a key role in the protection of the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group in the Gulf of Oman, an area of strategic importance for U.S. military operations in the region. Yaste's blunder raised serious questions about his proficiency, a critical factor for any military leader, especially one commanding a warship. While many considered the gaffe to be an embarrassing mishap, others pointed out that such errors reflect poorly on the standards of military leadership. “An officer sets the standard,” noted one former Army veteran. Military officers are expected to exhibit high technical and tactical expertise, particularly with essential equipment like firearms. His temporary replacement, Captain Allison Christy, has already taken over his command. Christy, who had been serving as the deputy commodore of Destroyer Squadron 21, has stepped in to ensure the mission of protecting U.S. interests in the region continues without disruption. The Navy quickly removed the infamous photo after it went viral and apologized for the oversight in a follow-up post, which was met with mixed reactions. Some defended Yaste, arguing that a single error shouldn’t define his long career, while others viewed the incident as a sign of deeper issues within the military's training protocols. Military operations in the Gulf of Oman are critical as tensions in the region persist, with Iran and other hostile actors posing ongoing threats to U.S. naval vessels. The U.S. Navy maintains a strong presence in these waters to safeguard commercial shipping routes and ensure stability. Despite the personal embarrassment and professional consequences faced by Yaste, the operational readiness of the U.S. military in the region remains intact. While the fallout from the photo continues to resonate within military and online communities, it serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of even the smallest details in high-stakes environments. The U.S. Navy has emphasized the necessity of precision and competence, both in equipment use and leadership, particularly as international challenges mount. Watch This Mushroom Drive a Robot Across the Ground—We’re Not Joking

There’s no question that when most people think of robotics, they imagine a field of metal, mechanisms, and wires. Yet today, in the growing field of biohybrid robotics, one can watch as a traditional robot is animated to mechanical life at the command of a mushroom.
