Aroma of the '80s

Aroma of the '80s

Aside from the visual and audible cues reminiscent of the 1980s, one sense can elicit comforting recollections of a fond era: The Aroma of the 1980s.Look back through your mind's scent folders and ask yourself "What aromas then bring a smile to my face now?"  Journey with us as we take a look at a few that spring to our mind!Chapter 1: ToysStarting with our entertaining toys, many of us recall the sweet, fruit scents of Strawberry Shortcake (Sweet Beginnings) and her cast of character dolls.  Whether new or old, the scent of strawberries, blueberries, peaches and other scents continue to radiant from these joyful dolls.  Likewise, the Peaches-N-Cream Barbie delivered a sugary sweet peach scent to enhance a young girls play scene.  And who can forget the floral scented Rose Petal Dolls when swayed and moved about during playtime.Cabbage Patch dolls with their mix of plastic meets hints of vanilla take us back to hugging and carrying them around from stroller, to table, to bed.  While our small, blue and white Smurf figures radiated a strong yet somehow pleasant PVC scent as we hopped them along their adventures on the floor.Stinkor from the Masters of the Universe, however was an ingeniously odd scented mold with patchouli oil mixed directly in the mold.  As his name implies, he was a repulsively scented character that, at times, smelled mostly of burnt plastic.  Speaking of burnt plastic, the Lite-Brite tended to smell similar as the 60-watt bulb glowed while we inserted the colorful pegs into the grid.  Arguably, Colorforms smelled of a similar, warm rubber meets PVC smell also. Finally, within the play realm we cannot forget Play-Doh with its unique dough and plastic aroma setting it apart from, well, edible bread.Chapter 2: StickersScratch and Sniff stickers remain a revered bouquet of nostalgic scents.  With the cornucopia of varieties, you could become easily distracted in class as you ran your nostrils over the covers of our notebooks.  Catching whiffs of chocolate, fruit, pickles, ice cream, and our favorite: watermelon scent us (pun intended) into a mild mental distraction during history class.Chapter 3: Health and BeautyBeloved beauty products of yesteryear were no exception to the fond recall of the 1980s either.  The various hairsprays that suspended our hair equally dispersed alcohol-like fragrances that we shall never forget.  No matter the added floral scents, the hairspray base was far more prevalent and tends to remain in our olfactory memories.  Likewise, the pungently strong acne and facial cleansers with their unique, aromatic concoction questioned us all if we would receive a contact high or chemical burn.Shampoos seemed to blossom into a near rainbow of colors and scents as well.  From the fruity fragrance of Salon Selectives to the Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific was equally a pleasant shampoo that emitted a forest meets a floral field aroma.  Can you recall the hints of honey from Faberge Organics or the slightly musky TCB?  Suave and Agree introduced us to the strong yet welcoming scents of green apple and strawberry shampoos which made us question how much shampoo was really in the bottle.Chapter 4: Office and School SuppliesDare we forget how mere office/school supplies also stood out amongst the aromatic crowds?  Ah! The  candy and fruit scented erasers which, effectively, did not erase.Although only available at the Hershey's Chocolate World gift shop, Hershey's produced Chocolate Scents pens which delivered a truly identical smell and equally brown ink pathway as you jotted down notes.  Papermate's erasable pens were nearly intoxifying as you wrote notes or book reports while having that radical ability to erase your inked mistakes. The scent of the ink produced from the Spirit Machine, also known as the mimeograph or ditto machine, arose from the copied paper's ink as a true, unique scent.  Although nearly indescribable, we who traveled through the schools in the 1980s know what it smells like.Chapter 5: PlacesAnother chapter of scents which was prevalent and familiar was the public library.  No matter the town, one could easily walk from one town's or city library to another and they all had the trademark aroma of old paper and cellophane. How about the long departed KCafe inside K-Mart or Hills Department Stores with their eye-popping food courts at the entrance?  We all believed that the manager pumped the freshly popped popcorn through the ventilation so we could beg our parents for a bag or box of popcorn...and maybe pizza too!The moment you walked into a Pizza Hut in the 1980s, you knew you in the palace of pizza restaurants.  Enveloped with high dosages of grease coupled with a few whiffs of the pie ingredients with a hint of cigarette smoke is an all too familiar aromatic mental stamp in time. And then there are the malls that sent the scents free as you walked the halls.  From perfumes and colognes, the food courts, the traces of new clothing, along with the human passerby's with their mix of odors...to include the body odor can easily strike up our nostalgic nasal memories.Chapter 6: ElectronicsWe conclude this survey of nostalgic scents with the distinct fragrance of electronics.  Can you recall that static, electrifying scent as you changed the channels on the old rotary, turn knob televisions or when you were changing your game cartridges? How about that magnetic and plastic scent from freshly opened audio or video cassette tapes? Many of us can be taken back to fond memories and times by any or all of our senses.  The sense of smell is no different and invites warm memories of delightful memories.  What aromas kindle memories for you?

Biden-Harris Prep Recycled Accusation Ahead Of 2024 Election: Russia, Russia, Russia!

Trying to use the same playbook the Democrats have been accused of using in 2016, the Biden-Harris administration is expected to accuse Russia of meddling in the presidential campaign. CNN quoted “sources familiar with the matter” who said the Biden-Harris administration would accuse RT, the Russian state media network, of using propaganda to influence the outcome of the election, as well as the Social Design Agency. In July 2018, a federal grand jury indicted 12 Russian military intelligence officers for their alleged roles in interfering with the 2016 United States elections. They were involved in a “computer hacking conspiracy involving gaining unauthorized access into the computers of U.S. persons and entities involved in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, stealing documents from those computers, and staging releases of the stolen documents to interfere with the 2016 U.S. presidential election,” the FBI stated. In May 2023, Special Counsel John Durham issued his report on the hoax allegedly involving members of the Clinton campaign accusing the Trump campaign of colluding with Russia. Durham’s report “accused FBI leaders of displaying a ‘serious lack of analytical rigor’ and relying significantly on ‘investigative leads provided or funded (directly or indirectly) by Trump’s political opponents,’ referring to staffers and allies of Hillary Clinton, then the Democratic presidential nominee, whose campaign funded the Steele dossier through its law firm Perkins Coie,” National Review noted. Meanwhile, Iran has been targeting the American electorate. On August 19, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released a statement accusing Iran of hacking into the 2024 Trump campaign. They stated: We have observed increasingly aggressive Iranian activity during this election cycle, specifically involving influence operations targeting the American public and cyber operations targeting presidential campaigns. This includes the recently reported activities to compromise former President Trump’s campaign, which the IC attributes to Iran. In early August, a Pakistani national with what FBI Director Christopher Wray called “close ties to Iran” was arrested and charged with orchestrating a scheme to reportedly assassinate former President Trump as well as other government officials. According to court documents, in April 2024, Asif Merchant, 46, who revealed he has a wife and children in both Iran and Pakistan, came to the U.S. after spending time in Iran. He contacted someone about his alleged scheme; that person, who became a confidential source (CS), then contacted the FBI. In early June in New York, Merchant met the CS and outlined his alleged plot to commit a series of assassinations in the U.S. In late July, an official with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said during a press briefing that U.S. intelligence has “observed Tehran working to influence the presidential election” because they want to prevent being held accountable by the U.S. Iran is meddling in U.S. elections by using “vast webs of online personas and propaganda mills to spread disinformation” on social media where they are conducting campaigns that reflect their desire that Trump loses, the official said. At Least 4 Dead, 30 Injured After Gunman Opens Fire At Georgia High School

Police responded to an active shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday morning where at least four people were killed and 30 others were injured, law enforcement sources told CNN. One suspect is in custody and the conditions of those wounded remain unclear, CNN reported. “At approximately 10:23 a.m. officers from multiple law enforcement agencies and Fire/EMS personnel were dispatched to the high school in reference to a reported active shooting,” the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. During a press conference outside the school, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith told reporters, “We do have a suspect in custody and we’re asking for your patience … let us get the facts that we need to make sure that we get this right.” Apalachee High School is 45 miles east of Atlanta and has nearly 2,000 students. Students were released to their parents at 11:33 a.m., more than an hour after police responded to the shooting, 11 Alive reported. Brian Kemp said in a statement. “We will continue to work with local, state, and federal partners as we gather information and further respond to this situation.” Tickets for “Am I Racist?” are on sale NOW! President Joe Biden has also been briefed on the shooting, the White House said, adding that “his administration will continue coordinating with federal, state, and local officials as we receive more information.” Attorney General Merick Garland also commented on the school shooting during a news conference, saying, “I want to address the tragic shooting that occurred this morning at a high school in Winder, Georgia. We are still gathering information, but the FBI and ATF are on the scene working with state, local and federal partners.” This is a developing story.

Kamala’s Tough Talk On Immigration At Odds With Previous Statements: ‘Detainers Are Not Mandatory’

Kamala’s Tough Talk On Immigration At Odds With Previous Statements: ‘Detainers Are Not Mandatory’

During her recent interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Vice President Kamala Harris said that she would be tough on illegal immigration if elected president, but her past statements about immigration enforcement cast doubt on the claim. When asked about the Biden administration’s record on illegal immigration during the interview, Harris claimed that she would enforce immigration laws if elected president. “I believe there should be consequence – we have laws that have to be followed and enforced that address and deal with people who cross our border illegally,” Harris told Bash. “I’m the only person in this race who actually served a border state as attorney general to enforce our laws. And I would enforce our laws as president going forward.” But Harris has a history of advocating for the opposite. During a 2019 CDP/Univision forum when she was running for president, she said it was “wrong” for former President Barack Obama to deport three million illegal immigrants. She also bragged about how she suggested sheriffs and district attorneys in California ignore Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers placed on dangerous illegal immigrants. Tickets for “Am I Racist?” are on sale NOW! Buy here for a theater near you. “And I actually, as attorney general, um, informed California law enforcement that ICE detainers are not mandatory,” Harris said. “I disagreed with it and that’s why I issued that policy for the sheriff’s and the district attorneys of California telling them that these were not mandatory.” Harris’ 2017 X post declaring “an undocumented immigrant is not a criminal,” is still visible. During that same interview, Harris claimed that her task of addressing the “root causes” of immigration brought “a number of benefits,” including a reduction in unlawful border crossings. that a former Homeland Security official attributed to extreme heat and the creation of programs that mask the real number of illegal immigrants entering the United States. Mass illegal immigration has also surged to record levels under the Biden-Harris administration, with more than 9.5 million nationwide encounters and about 1.7 million illegal immigrants avoiding border patrol and sneaking into the country in the past four years. WATCH THE TRAILER FOR ‘AM I RACIST?’ — A MATT WALSH COMEDY ON DEI Biden, with no pushback from Harris, has halted construction of the border wall and ended former President Donald Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy. The administration also canceled more than 350,000 asylum cases that allowed illegal immigrants to remain in the U.S. indefinitely. The Harris campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
