Behavioral specialist demonstrates gentle parenting vs. permissive parenting

One of the benefits of parenting in the 21st century is that we have decades of research on child psychology, behavior and development to draw best practices from. Unfortunately, all of that knowledge can also makes parenting more confusing than it already is.It's not that the research is faulty, it's that people often don't take the time to actually understand what specific parenting philosophies actually entail. There's perhaps no more notorious example of that than misunderstandings about what "gentle parenting" means. For many parents, "gentle parenting" sounds like a nice idea in theory but unrealistic in practice. Many imagine it means always using a calm and quiet voice, asking a child nicely to do things (or not do things) without setting any rules or boundaries around behavior. With that understanding, what ends up happening is a parent tries to "gentle parent" their child with scenarios that go something like this:"Ellie, would you please put your shoes on?"[Ellie ignores Mom and continues to play with her toys.]"Ellie, it's time to get your shoes on. Can you stop playing with your toys, please?"[Ellie shakes her head no while continuing to play.]"Ellie, we have to go now. Mommy needs you to put your shoes on. Can you cooperate, please?"[Ellie says, "No, I don't want to!"]"Come on, Ellie. I know you don't want to, but please be cooperative." Child playing with blocks. Photo by Karolina Kaboompics/PexelsAnd so it continues, with Mom asking nicely and Ellie refusing until Mom finally loses her patience and yells, at which time Ellie complies. Conclusion: Gentle parenting doesn't work.Except what Mom is doing in that scenario isn't gentle parenting. It's gentle, sure. But it's not parenting.Behavioral specialist and teacher Gabe Hannans explains what gentle parenting means in his popular TikTok videos. He also takes it a step further and demonstrates what gentle parenting actually looks like in practice. In one video, Hannans stitches a video showing a mother losing her cool and yelling and swearing at a toddler who wouldn't get out of the garbage when she asked nicely with the caption, "When gentle parenting is not working." "So, gentle parenting is not talking to your child like, 'Oh, little Billy, you gotta stop. Stop that, little Billy,'" he says. "If I need a kid to do something, I'm gonna walk up, 'Hey, little Billy. This is what we're doing now.' I'm gonna say what you should be doing instead of what you shouldn't be doing." Watch him explain the effect that has on a child's brain: @the_indomitable_blackman #stitch with @nazahmathis397 Learn what gentle Parenting actually is... #sahm #NextLevelDish #foryoupage #children #fyp #GetCrackin #kids In another video, he demonstrates what gentle parenting might look like in practice with a specific scenario in which he asks a kid to come inside because it's about to start raining. The kid, Jimothy, responds in a way that's rude or disrespectful because he wants to stay outside a little longer. Watch how Hannans handles it: @the_indomitable_blackman #stitch with @Life with Sam ? Gentle, permissive, Conscious, respectful, different names, same principles. High expectation, Hugh responsiveness. It's not violent, fearful or shameful. it teaches the lessons you want them to learn. If you wanna make the switch and have Questions, that's why I'm here! #parents #parenting #respect #fyp #foryou #foryoupage As the parent in the situation, he doesn't act as if he's not bothered by the kid's reaction. He's real about it, but he doesn't react with anger. He models healthy emotional control. He makes it clear that the expectation is mutual respect, and he models and explains that, too. He has the kid come up with a respectful response and has him practice it. Then he shows the kid that the respectful response works better, offering positive reinforcement of the desired behavior."A lot of parents are unfortunately holding on the belief that gentle parenting is permissive parenting, and they are not the same thing," he says. "They are so different because gentle parenting actually does teach respect, it teaches boundaries, it teaches expectations, it teaches what you're supposed to do in a given interaction. It's what proper parenting looks like."Sometimes gentle parenting is referred to as conscious parenting or respectful parenting, but it's all the same thing. It's parenting through the lens of teaching, with the understanding that kids aren't born knowing how to act or communicate or behave or express themselves. We as parents have to patiently and persistently teach them all of those things, and that looks a bit different at each age and stage. What about things like tantrums? As Hannans shows and explains in another video, taking a proactive approach to prevent tantrums is much more effective than waiting for them to happen and then having to manage them. Tantrums happen—it is developmentally appropriate behavior at certain ages and stages. But there's a lot that a parent can do to lessen the chances of a kid melting down. Here's one example of how a parent can prepare a child to go shopping and set the expectations beforehand for what a trip to the store is going to entail. @the_indomitable_blackman #stitch Kids will tantrum, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! Teach these kids to self regulate when they're calm. Set expectations and boundaries AND HOLD FIRM TO THEM. For more information... Check out the book I wrote. #fyp #foryoupage #foryou #parenting #parents #teaching Every parent knows that parenting is complicated no matter how much research we do and how much knowledge we have. Each child has their own innate personality that parents have to get to know, and each parent has their own upbringing, environment, culture and tendencies to contend with. Most of us want to parent well, but figuring out how to do that with all the different variables at play is hard. But that doesn't mean there aren't better and worse ways to parent. We have research-backed, effective ways to teach a child how to be a solid, upstanding human being without having to resort to harsh punishments. Screaming and yelling, spanking, humiliation, shaming and other "old school" methods might seem like they "work" in the short term, because they cause a child to shut down and do as they're told out of fear. But that doesn't teach them what respectful behavior or emotional regulation actually look like. It doesn't give them the tools and skills they need to make choices for themselves. That's what gentle parenting is all about. Follow Hannans on TIkTok for more gentle parenting education and demonstration, and check out his book, "This is Parenting," here.

Will You Fight? Or Are You Too Demoralized?

I picked up a pretty good amount of commentary in my email from yesterday’s column, in which I expressed some optimism that things might be starting to turn around in the fight to preserve civilization from the forces of tyranny who are holding the high ground at present. Some of you guys are Eeyores, you know. No, I’m not drinking, and no, I’m not delusional. I would point out to you that your despair is the precise result the forces of evil are seeking. They want you to believe that the America you grew up in is lost because when that recognition takes hold you’ll be demoralized. Demoralization Is the First Stage In the Communist Takeover I’ll take you back to the column I wrote four years ago at The American Spectator, which if I’m not mistaken is still the top-traffic getter of them all. In it, I brought up Yuri Bezmenov, who was a former Soviet KGB officer who defected to Canada in the late 1970s but did an interview with an American journalist in which he described the four stages of a Communist takeover of a country. The first stage, according to Bezmenov, was demoralization. He meant it in two ways: the act of sapping national will by making people depressed and disgusted — which you can see in countless ways from our trash culture to the awful quality of life for American corporate-drone workers and so on — but also, literally de-MORAL-ization, in which a society is taught to ignore the focus on the traditionally important things in life. Are you a good person? Do you live in a community full of good people? Are the standards you and your neighbors upholding praiseworthy? Or is the concept of standards at all now a sign of bigotry? It isn’t normal politics which creates transgenderism as a mainstream advocacy position, you know. And it’s certainly not normal that the Democrats would open their party platform with a “land acknowledgment” that alleges that America shouldn’t even exist. Those idiocies have no purpose but to demoralize society and to tear down the cultural and intellectual underpinnings of what it means to be an American. Once a society has been demoralized, Bezmenov said, the next stage was destabilization, followed by crisis and normalization; that last stage was when the country in question was fully taken over by communist tyrants. Primed for Recognition It’s arguable how far along we are on Bezmenov’s timeline. I argued almost three years ago that we were in the destabilization phase, but it feels a little like that has bogged down. What’s certainly true is that none of this is inexorable, though. It can be fought off. And the first stage in a revival or counter-takeover, to play off Bezmenov’s theory, is recognition. We may not be in the recognition stage yet. But we’re primed for it. The things discussed in yesterday’s column are the unmistakable signs of abnormality by which the apolitical can now be awakened to a problem. A San Francisco 49ers wide receiver is shot on the street for his Rolex by a 17-year-old thug who isn’t supposed to have a firearm under California law. Venezuelan gangsters are staging violent takeovers of apartment complexes in suburban Denver and Chicago. A longtime aide to two New York governors gets arrested as a spy for China. Brazil bans X, and this is the reaction of a major political party’s presidential nominee: Well, here ya go folks. Harris is saying the quiet part out loud. She’s openly expressing her desire to censor free speech. Jake Tapper looks totally shocked & baffled. The idea of this woman leading the freest and most powerful nation on the planet is simply terrifying. @X… pic.twitter.com/P1MQF7wWG5 — Evans Wroten (@Evans_Wroten) September 3, 2024 Yes, that last bit is as crystal clear as it is noxious. It says a lot, doesn’t it? She’s clearly a moron, and she clearly wouldn’t be the one running the country if she won, and there is clearly a cabal of tyrants she’s fronting for who clearly believe in shutting down the digital public square. We have about two months left in this presidential race — and there are a lot of down-ballot races of crucial importance on tap as well — and one of the things we’re going to find out is whether the American people are truly ready for the recognition stage of recovery. Because it’s becoming impossible to avoid the truth about the ruling class in this country. The Elites Are Truly Atrocious People These are incredibly contemptuous, rapacious, atrocious people  — atrocious in the sense that they have no qualms about committing atrocities. The banning of a social media platform because its users might say things with which you disagree is an atrocity. Sustaining a war that kills hundreds of thousands if not millions of people for no other reason than profiteering is an atrocity. Shepherding your people into a declining life expectancy as they fall into dependency on the pharmaceutical industry that you encourage from childhood on is an atrocity. Allowing almost 300,000 illegal migrant children to go “missing,” meaning that a very large proportion of them are routed into child sex trafficking in this country, is an atrocity. Allowing the opposition presidential candidate to be shot, whether through over-the-top manufactured incompetence or intentional action, is an atrocity. Inundating your cities with criminals from foreign lands, so that everyday Americans already suffering from a poor quality of life now have to fear colonization from the world’s most savage and violent people on your watch. That’s an atrocity. You have to see that it is. And once you see it you have to act to stop it. Of course, the legacy corporate media is hard at work screeching to you that “All is well!” Kevin Bacon-style, but it’s with much less feeling nowadays. They can’t really sell this Edsel EV and they know it — if for no other reason than that the TV ratings and circulation counts tell them so. Privately, their talking heads are warning their votaries that things aren’t going well for the ruling class side. Here’s Mark Halperin from a few days ago attempting to break it softly to their voters: Recognition cancels demoralization. When you know and believe that there are forces out there actively subverting your way of life and the principles of your society, you are no longer demoralized. You are now responsible for acting against those forces and helping to restore those norms and standards which undergird that society. Without demoralization, the Bezmenov process of imposing communist control over society becomes much more difficult if not impossible. Do not be demoralized. Be resolute. Don’t just vote this fall. Chase everyone you know who can help the cause of freedom and order to the polls. Stand up to tyranny wherever you see it. Give money — one way to do that which really will help is to subscribe to The American Spectator so that we’ve got the resources to keep at this and grow stronger. Don’t just sit on that couch. Wage this spiritual, informational war at every turn — cheerfully, lawfully, and with a full heart. Because the fight only ends when you stop fighting. Don’t let them stop you. Ever. The Hidden Vote

Former President Donald Trump is slightly ahead in the polls and, as in 2016 and 2020, he is drawing massive crowds at his rallies. Some knowledgeable observers have even speculated that Trump could be on the verge of a landslide electoral college victory. But, while our attention is being drawn to the polls, the campaigning, and the strategies of the presidential candidates, what about the taxpayer-funded electoral apparatus that has been created over the past four years by the Biden-Harris regime? (READ MORE: Despite the Harris Candidacy, I’m Actually Optimistic) I’m talking about the regime’s importation of millions of illegal migrants, many of whom have been given government financial aid, free housing, and transportation. So what does this have to do with the upcoming election? States Are Purging Illegals from Voter Roles. It’s a Much Bigger Problem. Consider this July 10, 2024 report by the New York Post: Welfare offices and other agencies in at least 46 states are providing voter registration forms to migrants without requiring proof of citizenship, leading Republicans and conservatives to call for swift federal action to stop the handouts. Every state but North Dakota, New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Wyoming gives applicants for either welfare benefits, driver’s licenses, or in some cases, mail-in ballots federal voter registration forms without demanding proof of citizenship. There is currently no requirement on federal voting forms to provide proof of US citizenship, though it is illegal to falsely claim one is a citizen or for a non-citizen to cast a ballot in a federal election. Similarly, on Aug. 21, 2024, the Texas Attorney General’s Office issued a press release that states, in part, the following: Investigators from the Texas Attorney General’s Election Integrity Unit recently conducted undercover operations to identify potential voter registration of noncitizens in Texas. The investigation has already confirmed that various nonprofit organizations have been located outside Texas Department of Public Safety Driver License offices, operating booths offering to assist in voter registration for persons doing business at the driver’s license offices. But all citizens have already been presented an opportunity to register to vote as part of the process of renewing or being issued an identification card or driver’s license, so there is no obvious need to assist citizens to register to vote outside DPS offices—calling into question the motives of the nonprofit groups. In Arizona, litigation is underway to remove 35,000 illegal migrants registered to vote in Maricopa County alone. It is worth noting that in the 2020 election, Biden won Arizona by 10,457 votes, Georgia by 12,670 votes, Wisconsin by 20,682 votes, and Nevada by 33,596 votes. (READ MORE: Trump and the Kennedys for Tax Cuts, Kamala Not) In Virginia, Alabama, and Ohio, thousands of noncitizen voters have been discovered and purged from the voting rolls. But how many illegal migrant registered voters remain undetected in those and other states? The Biden-Harris Regime Expects Illegals to Vote for Them The Biden-Harris regime has not flooded the country with millions of illegal migrants and given them billions of taxpayer dollars out of some overwhelming charitable impulse. Instead, the regime expects these newly minted dependents to vote for their Democrat benefactors to keep the gravy train flowing. And concomitantly with former President Trump promising to deport these illegal migrants, it is reasonable to expect that they are highly motivated to keep him out of office. (READ MORE: Donald Trump v. The Archbishop of Satan) In summary, if the upcoming election is as close as the contests in 2016 and 2020, the available evidence indicates that there are tens and possibly hundreds of thousands of undiscovered illegal migrant voters ready, willing, and able to provide Kamala Harris with the margin of victory in the swing states. If that happens, then Barack Obama’s pledge to fundamentally transform America will have taken a giant leap forward. A Memo to Donald Trump Before the Debate

A Memo to Donald Trump Before the Debate

Early voting starts as early as mid-September. Your campaign needs to import paid teams into the battleground states, and you have only a few days to define issues to frame the debate next week. Raise expectations for Kamala. Instead of  “low IQ, dumb, she can’t put two sentences together,” try “she’s good at memorizing very misleading soundbites so she can debate very strongly to hide her radical extremism.” Harris brags that she’s “the last person in the room with Joe” for major decisions. Especially given Biden’s incapacity, let Harris own the Afghanistan debacle, cost of living angst, open borders, chaotic world, and more. Thus, this election must be about their failures, not a referendum on Trump or abortion. Contrast your peace and prosperity with her wars and inflation. You left them the Abraham Accords and a recovering economy. They screwed it all up. Then talk about your generational vision. Don’t use attacks perceived as personal; instead, expose where Kamala stands on issues. “Madame Vice President, you’re a clever politician who campaigns pretending to be a moderate. But you’re a radical extremist who cannot be trusted.” Losing the Debate Means an Uphill Battle Prep daily for this debate. Lose this debate and it’s uphill. J.D. Vance can close the deal in his debate. This year, the VP choice matters. Kamala did not get a single delegate in 2020. Yet, Biden made a deal with Congressman Jim Clyburn to make her vice president. Now, power brokers in secret forced Biden out and anointed Kamala, without an open convention. And she selected Tampon Tim Walz. Years ago his earlier campaign denied his drunk driving  (a “misunderstanding”); but Walz was driving 96 mph in a 55 mph zone, failed sobriety and blood tests, was arrested, jailed, and convicted. Walz dismissed his spoken false claim that he carried arms in war as a grammatical error. In another viral moment, he turned away from a reporter asking about the execution of six hostages, including an American. There is more to come on this pompous blowhard. Harris must own Walz. What about you, President Trump? Stop talking about polls, crowd size, and the stock market. You’re not in a Republican primary. Keep your authenticity, but with discipline and focus — contrived spontaneity, with intention. Speeches, interviews, tweets — stay on message geared to this Target Group: the independent voters within an expanded definition of battleground states. Your polling and focus groups should emphasize this Target Group because what moves these independent voters will also reach the disenchanted squishy partisans you need — Democrats, Republicans, and the wandering nonwhites and younger voters  Obviously, avoid issues (notably abortion) where your hardcore and independent supporters diverge. Track independent voters in each battleground state, then combine them into a larger group for reliable multi-level demographics for micro-targeting. Let the no-cost public polls guide how you’re doing overall in each battleground. And you need restructured advertising, not shrill, but with an emotional connection. Be On Top of the News Your daily harangue does not reach independent voters and it energizes Harris voters. Your stump speech needs tweaking. Also, define each day’s news lead; don’t step on it. Replace funny insults with self-deprecating humor (“Bobby considered endorsing me because like Mitt Romney, I never smoked and was never a drinker, but Mitt still didn’t back me; Bobby drove a tough deal, no junk food.”). You should be the first with a literate reaction to breaking news, and then your coordinated surrogates should follow. Put Harris on defense with a challenge or a question. Just for the debate alone, I could provide a whole list of questions that Harris could not answer. Example: “An American hostage was executed in Rafah. Four months ago, Israel could have rescued him and other hostages held in Rafah, but you publicly ordered Israel to stand down. Why do you keep blaming Israel, and not Hamas and do you regret providing a sanctuary for Hamas and extending this war?” No unvetted tweets. If you are implausible, you cannot, in the debate, impeach Kamala’s credibility. You can dominate on issues without hyperbole. Memorize and repeat only verified accurate numbers, examples, citations, and quotes. Stop giving raw meat to the “fact-checkers” — their rebukes obscure your message. Voters need to understand Kamala’s conversion is not “a leader evolving,” but a fraudster selling bait-and-switch. You can impugn Kamala with “You’re not who you say you are” but not if you pander. You need to regain your (political) virginity. Less About Abortion, Not More The less said about abortion, the better. Stop boasting about your Supreme Court appointees reversing Roe. It’s a political loser. The conservative rationale remains that  Roe was wrongly decided, and abortion should be up to the people at the state level. You correctly oppose a federal abortion law. Your reversals on the Florida referendum raise the profile of abortion (not cost of living or open borders). Instead, highlight Kamala’s flip-flops. It is central to her political takedown. Your campaign lacked a Plan B if Biden were replaced by Kamala. Consequently, she had a free ride: her staff and surrogates walked back her position on major issues, without her taking the heat. Meanwhile, Democrat fundraising is way up. Amnesia blossomed as if Biden didn’t exist. They made you the incumbent “taking us back” and her the challenger “moving forward.” Most Americans don’t relate to “Marxist” or “Communist” and “San Francisco liberal” is too tame. She is a “radical extremist” to busy selling snake oil to educate voters about her issue positions. She shines when you attack her personally, she fudges when challenged on issues. Learn from No Plan B and prepare for an October surprise to magnify Kamala as the commander-in-chief. You might even predict they create a crisis; they put politics first: “Harris-Biden’s ‘two-state solution’ is Michigan and Minnesota.” Our enemies will wage war if it helps elect her and stand down if war will hurt her. If they believe you will win, they might attack before you become president, with Biden in dementia and Harris in la-la land. Kamala redefined the race — you (not Biden) are the aging incumbent in decline, she is the energetic challenger. She uses a teleprompter skillfully. She can cram well for the debate. And with the help of a complicit and corrupt media, history is rewritten as voters are groomed to believe that (a) Biden was one of the great presidents in history who (b) graciously transitioned to (c) the next generation (d) Kamala, an inspirational and charismatic woman of color who brings us “joy” and is (e) a high energy change agent (f) in contrast to the older guy who repeats himself, mixes up facts, whines, felony convictions, etc. You need to put these narratives to rest. Frame the Issues Before the Debate Media spin can go the other way if you frame issues before the debate. Ideally, your team should promote a bad Kamala story that appears the morning of the debate to unnerve her. Kamala needs to be damaged goods before the debate, which potentially can define the campaign. A “truth squad” — perhaps Republican senators — should follow her at each campaign appearance. Disgruntled former Kamala staff members quit because of her laziness and abuse. Can reporters find them? So much more. Let’s get her on defense for the rest of the campaign. Name-calling and shill or personal attacks do not work. Instead, consider focused-negative, ending with comparative-Trump-positive attacks. Or perhaps compare the Trump record with the Harris-Biden screw-up, then follow it up with “the Trump future is positive.” It’s a full circle, your peace-and-prosperity first and second administrations bookend the Harris-Biden chaos. In the days before the debate, seek positive coverage. Show unity and outreach. Perhaps campaign with Nicki Haley in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Detroit, and Milwaukee. Prepare major events or announcements to emerge right after the debate and the next morning. You want her national and battleground polls to peak, so the media spin her self-fueling downward momentum with finger-pointing among Democrats. Should the convention have been open? Is Harris too far left? Is Walz a disaster? Your campaign by default allowed Kamala, her convention, and her surrogates to hijack themes of democracy, freedom, change, unity, patriotism, and light. Party bosses manipulated to make her the nominee without an open convention; she believes in more government control; she would continue Biden’s status quo; like Obama and Biden, she rejects American exceptionalism and divides the country by race, gender, exploiters/victims. Their path is dark. They are “progressives” against progress. But you play into their false narrative by making yourself a victim with a grievance, while she claims “joy.” You must flip her narrative and explain to voters that there is nothing joyous about Harris-Biden open borders, unaffordable cost of living, and more. Their campaign has over-stepped and she is vulnerable to being taken down. Your campaign has been given low-hanging fruit, but your campaign is in the weeds. Kamala adopted a daring strategy to steal your themes and words and co-opt your issues. She is fencing the stolen goods with the electorate. If you don’t stop the theft and punish the thief, the larceny becomes bolder. But her selective appropriation of your agenda — she is now for fracking, border security, private health insurance, and gun ownership — is risky, providing an opportunity for you to prove she is a two-faced phony. Do it clinically, almost with detachment, not as a personal attack, because then the attack mode eclipses the substance. The trick is to go negative but seem positive. You need synergistic advertising, but that’s another memo. Connect the Dots You need to connect the dots. “The Trump economy was strong, stalled only by COVID. We prevented another great depression and set the path to growth. Then Harris-Biden came in, kept schools closed, and hurt our children; jobs were already coming back organically, no thanks to Harris/Biden who now claim credit for a recovery in progress. The fact is that Harris and Biden kept increasing government spending, with more dollars chasing goods and services, leading to massive inflation. This was a seismic shock to the American economy that created unrest and anxiety among our people. Harris-Biden kept increasing the cost of living with more regulations and terrible energy policies that lifted the price of gas at the pump, higher utility bills, and more cost to bring food to grocery markets. Now, people can’t afford to live. And the cost of buying a home or renting has skyrocketed. And what was the Harris-Biden solution? To raise interest rates, making it even tougher to buy a home or buy or lease a car. Credit card interest rates zoomed. Now, Harris-Biden will not accept responsibility for any of this. They blame it on big businesses, small businesses, the oil companies, your grocery market, your plumber, the shoe store, the waiter or waitress. Do union members understand — are they blaming you for trying to keep up with the inflation they caused? They created this crisis where people can’t afford to live. Yet, they say it’s everyone’s fault except for Harris/Biden.” “Inflation is too much money going after too few goods and services. In effect, Harris-Biden printed too much money. A better word than inflation is affordability. People cannot afford the price of gas, housing, going to restaurants, utility bills, the high interest rates. All this leads to anxiety, stress, and fear for the future. Harris-Biden changed the American psyche. Do we want four more years of Harris-Biden?” “You know if you’re addicted to drugs or drinking, you can’t move ahead unless you admit you have a problem. Harris-Biden will not accept responsibility, and that’s why another four years will be even worse. So, if you think the destruction of the American dream is your neighbor’s fault or it’s your fault, then vote for Harris-Biden for more of the same. If you hold Harris-Biden responsible, vote for me.” “This election is not about the economy, it’s about what the economy means to the people watching this debate. The American people are in a kind of panic. Parents feel their children will not have a better life and that their kids will not be able to live as well as their parents. Harris-Biden offers an economy of despair, I offer hope.” Voters need to understand the cost of living continues to increase, not quite as quickly, but it’s still going up, and Harris-Biden permanently raised the cost of living. If you get at the angst among Americans about the shock of the unprecedented rapid increase in the cost of living and the uncertain future, then by proxy you get at their angst about, for example, boys in the girls’ locker room at school. There Should be No Surprises at the Debate Every possible attack on you can be anticipated, and your opening statement might even predict that: “You know, I remember a Democratic presidential debate in 2019 when Kamala Harris implied Joe Biden was a racist. Who knows what her handlers coached her to say against me so that the media replay it over and over?” You need to study one- or two-sentence dispositive responses for each possible foreseeable attack. There should be no surprises for you in the debate. Do not get into a defensive mode with extended dialogue. Every minute you spend on defense — for example, arguing about the appraised value of Mar-a-Lago — is time that could be spent on the Harris-Biden open borders. You’ll need some zingers, words, phrases, a sentence, perhaps two or three sentences. You should study a list of tough questions to pose, questions that would be difficult for her to evade or answer. I could think of dozens of questions — another memo. On a more general level, for example, “You insisted for a long time that President Biden was at the top of his game. We know you were not telling the truth. When it comes to Biden’s incapacity, what did you know, and when did you know it? Why did you and others around President Biden urge him to do an early debate? Were you setting him up to fail?” Similarly, “Two days after reaffirming he was running for reelection, President Biden suddenly was out. We know that party bosses threw him under the bus, and you have a well-known affection for buses. You’re suddenly in, and the convention is rigged so no one can run against you. If Biden is not incapacitated, why did he abruptly — overnight — throw in the towel? And if he is incapacitated, what did you know, when did you know it, and why is he still in office? Can we assume that you have been making some of these major terrible decisions? If not, where do you differ with him?” What is important is not simply who watches the debate but the “lifts” that viewers see on the networks, cable, satellite, and internet, what clips radio uses, and what the print media leads with. Use the zingers to define the coverage. Decide what headline you want and don’t step on it. Your war room needs to up its game with ready documentation that can be provided both in real-time and quickly following the debate. All this should be prepared for each of your possible statements, questions, and assertions as well as a database to quickly fact-check or refute Kamala. In the three days leading up to the debate, and especially the morning of the debate, your team needs to get attacks out, with a trap laid, so that no matter how she responds to the attacks, you can still ambush her at the debate. After nearly four years, Kamala says she will on Day One solve problems, i.e., the problems she created. She has dug a hole for herself. Instead of debating you, Kamala should be debating herself. You need to use self-deprecating humor and also humor that causes voters to see Kamala as a fraud she is. The Establishment Media Has Gaslit America for Four Years

Never has gaslighting gone so far, for so long, with such high stakes. Over the last four years, the establishment media has propped Biden up, pushed Biden out, and now it seeks to ram Kamala Harris in. There is a reason why Americans no longer trust the establishment media. A year ago, Gallup found that just under one-third (32 percent) of Americans had a “great deal” to “a fair amount” of trust that the “mass media” reports “the news in a full, fair and accurate way.” That matched “Gallup’s lowest historical reading, previously recorded in 2016.” At the time, “29% of U.S. adults [had] ‘not very much’ trust, while a record-high 39% register ‘none at all.’” By roughly two-to-one, Americans distrust the establishment media. (READ MORE: Despite the Harris Candidacy, I’m Actually Optimistic) In 2023, Pew had similar findings. The percentage of Americans who “said they followed the news all or most of the time” fell from 51 percent in 2016 to just 38 percent in 2022. U.S. daily newspaper circulation had fallen from roughly 60 million in 2000 to approximately 21 million by 2023. The last two months have assuredly lowered these statistics still further. Mainstream Media Refuses to Connect the Dots For four years, the establishment media sought to seal away the Biden-Harris administration’s glaring failures until the seepage could no longer be stopped. The administration’s shameful rush from Afghanistan was but the first of many foreign policy failures. Emboldened by the administration’s weaknesses, America’s enemies lined up to take advantage. (READ MORE: The Sacred Duty of Skepticism) China has not been this belligerent since the days of Mao decades ago. Russia invaded Ukraine, launching the first all-out war in Europe since WWII. North Korea is brazenly partnering with Russia more and more. The administration’s attempt to buy off Iran by giving it access to billions of dollars utterly failed; with it, Iran unleashed its proxies: Houthi rebels, Hamas, and Hezbollah. In our own hemisphere, Venezuela’s dictator unabashedly stole an election. In all these cases, the establishment media have ignored these failures’ connections to this administration’s actions. The same refusal to connect the dots is occurring with inflation. Despite soaring with the Biden-Harris administration’s spending, the establishment media treated rising prices as though they were an act of God. The establishment media have merely reported macroeconomic indicators, while Americans nationwide have suffered the Biden-Harris economy’s inflationary fallout. With illegal immigration, the establishment media ignored the southern border, begrudgingly covering it only when the consequences appeared outside studio windows in New York and Los Angeles. Even then, it refused to identify it as the Biden-Harris administration’s political sop to its radical Left. On crime, the establishment media continue to try to tell Americans things are getting better. This is at a time when Americans are increasingly retreating into their homes and have simply ceased reporting many crimes. Shielding the President From View Of course, there was the ultimate hiding of Biden himself. The establishment media, which reports and follows the president daily, somehow missed — or, in reality, refused to report — his failings for almost four years. Then, four months before the election, it turned on a dime and “dropped a dime” on the president literally overnight — that night being the night of his debate with Trump. Not satisfied to reveal Biden, it helped lead the charge to drive him from office. The establishment media’s treatment of Kamala Harris has been equally egregiously biased. Trying to follow the administration’s lead, it sought to ignore her. Still, her vice presidency’s problems kept getting out. After the regicide of Biden was accomplished, the media needed a new candidate for coronation. Once it was clear it had to be Harris, the establishment media forgot that it had been intentionally forgetting about Kamala. Suddenly, what once was the bad penny is the new one. (READ MORE: Trump and the Kennedys for Tax Cuts, Kamala Not) The establishment media now portrays Harris as joyful and inexplicably a candidate for change. Yet what has changed the most about Harris, namely her positions on fracking and illegal immigration, are reported as though there was nothing to them. The establishment media has been gaslighting America for four years. In each instance, it’s told America the opposite of truth to sell the opposite of reality. Each time it adds a spin to make Americans think they were obtuse for seeing the obvious. On foreign policy, the media would have us believe that America is now respected and liked. On the economy, it wants Americans to forget inflation’s effects and focus on macro statistics. On illegal immigration, it would have Americans take Kamala Harris’ disingenuous, politically expedient about-face at face value, ignoring four years of deliberate border failure and its resulting scourge: fentanyl, violence, terrorists, and heinous crimes. Above all, there was four years’ worth of insistence that Biden was great — until he wasn’t — and that Kamala Harris, who hadn’t been, suddenly is. Then it topped this by ignoring Harris’ avoidance of serious engagement with even the establishment media: This at a time when Americans must evaluate in short order a candidate who has never run in a single presidential contest over two elections. Throughout this administration, the establishment media has told America, “You are wrong, we are right, let us take care of you, everything will be okay.”  The instances go on and on, but always only one way: to the left. The establishment media is no longer reporting the news but distorting the news and gaslighting America in the process. J.T. Young was a professional staffer in the House and Senate from 1987-2000, served in the Department of Treasury and Office of Management and Budget from 2001-2004, and was director of government relations for a Fortune 20 company from 2004-2023.
