The agency said the individual was “hospitalized due to severe central nervous system disease.” “The last reported human EEEV infection in New Hampshire was in 2014, when DHHS identified three human infections, including two fatalities. In addition to the person with EEEV infection announced today, EEEV has been detected in one horse and seven mosquito batches in New Hampshire so far this summer. EEEV has also been detected in neighboring states, including in Massachusetts (one person, one horse, and 69 mosquito samples) and Vermont (one person and 47 mosquito samples),” the agency stated. The nation is in the midst of peak mosquito season, as the insects tend to be most active in August and September. “The risk will continue into the fall until there is a hard frost that kills” the mosquitoes, New Hampshire’s state epidemiologist, Dr. Benjamin Chan, said in a news release Tuesday. The Massachusetts Public Health Department announced that insecticide sprays would begin this week following a case of EEE in a man in his 80s. Several Massachusetts towns said they will close public parks from dusk until dawn, when mosquitoes are most active. “We believe there is an elevated risk for EEEV infections this year in New England given the positive mosquito samples identified,” Chan said. Health officials in Oxford, Massachusetts, recommended a curfew to residents in hopes of limiting exposure to the illness. The Board of Health in Oxford recommended that residents not stay outdoors past dusk to reduce the chances of catching EEE. EEEV can also cause severe neurological disease, such as inflammation of the brain and membranes around the spinal cord (i.e. encephalitis and meningitis). Approximately one-third of all people who develop encephalitis from EEEV die from their infection, and many others experience life-long physical or mental impacts. There is no vaccine or antiviral treatment for EEEV. Granite Staters can prevent EEEV infection by taking steps to prevent mosquito bites, including using effective mosquito repellents, wearing long sleeves and pants when outside, and avoiding outdoor activities in the early morning and evening hours when mosquitos are most active. It is also important for residents to remove standing water from around their homes to reduce mosquito populations and ensure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens without holes. WATCH:

WASHINGTON — The United States is urging certain foreign nations not to fuel Sudan's civil war by arming fighting factions, as the country faces one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Meanwhile, Washington has also called on Sudan's warring sides to enforce a code of conduct to reduce abuses, noting that the army is considering the proposal after its rival paramilitary forces have agreed to it. More than 25 million people face acute hunger and more than 10 million have been displaced from their homes since fighting erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces, or SAF, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, the State Department said. “Unfortunately, we've seen a significant proliferation of the number of external actors that are playing a role on both sides,” and they are not putting the interest of the Sudanese people “at the core of this,” said Tom Perriello, U.S. special envoy for Sudan. “In addition to UAE [the United Arab Emirates] supporting the RSF,” Perriello told reporters on Tuesday, “we see foreign fighters coming in from across the Sahel. We've seen Iran, Russia, other negative actors on the SAF side.” U.S.-brokered peace talks on Sudan that concluded last week in Geneva failed to end the country's 16-month conflict. But one of the warring sides, the RSF, agreed to a code of conduct pledging to avoid violence against women, exploitation at checkpoints and the destruction of crops. Perriello said that the U.S. has presented the proposal to the SAF leaders who were absent in the Switzerland negotiations. "They have the code of conduct in front of them. We hope to get a response from them in the coming days," Perriello said. The United States has accused the SAF and RSF of war crimes, with the RSF specifically charged with ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity targeting the indigenous African-origin people of Darfur. During the talks in Geneva, the U.S., along with representatives from the African Union, the United Arab Emirates, the United Nations, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Switzerland, focused on reopening three humanitarian corridors — the Western border crossing in Darfur at Adre, the northern Dabbah Road from Port Sudan and the southern access route through Sennar. Later this week, the U.S. will have a first formal follow-up with the heads of delegations. Humanitarian assistance deliveries have resumed via two of the three routes: across the border at Adre from Chad and along the Dabbah Road into famine-stricken areas of Sudan. In a statement late Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken welcomed the reopening of humanitarian corridors, saying lack of humanitarian aid access into Darfur over the past six months has exacerbated the historic levels of famine and acute hunger across Sudan, particularly within the Zamzam camp.

Kamala Harris is a liar. She has lied about every position she’s ever held. Monday marked the murder of 13 American soldiers at Abbey Gate in Afghanistan. Those are the soldiers completely ignored by Joe Biden during his administration. In the first presidential debate, Biden actually said no American soldiers have died on his watch, which, of course, was a lie. 13 American soldiers were murdered at Abbey Gate because of the disastrous Afghanistan pullout, the single worst foreign policy move in the modern history of America. The Afghanistan pullout was a disaster. It was humiliating for the United States. We left hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of military equipment in the hands of the Taliban. We left tens of thousands of people who had worked with us to the brutality of the Taliban. There were people falling off the wheels of passenger airliners. A suicide bombing killed over 170 people, including those 13 American soldiers. Right now, women have been stuffed back into burqas; they’re not allowed to show their eyes on the streets. None of them are going to school. Well done, Biden administration. Never forget that Joe Biden lied every single step of the way. Every single step of the way. He suggested an American pullout from Afghanistan would not result in the collapse of the Afghanistan government, which was not true. He suggested it would be an orderly withdrawal. It was not. He suggested the withdrawal had been absolutely smooth and wonderful. It was not. Yet according to Kamala Harris, she was deeply involved in every aspect of the decision making. In 2021, she explained that she was the last person in the room making these decisions with Biden. When asked if she felt comfortable with that, she said, “I do.” You might also recall Harris on a tarmac being asked about the 13 dead service people while laughing and saying, “Hold on. Hold on. Slow down everybody.” The giant joke grin and the bizarre laughter while talking about 13 dead Americans were quite telling. The catastrophe in Afghanistan was directly linked to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Iran’s aggressive moves in the Middle East against both America and her allies, particularly Israel. The Afghanistan pullout was a signal horrifying failure in American foreign policy history. And Harris was part of the team making the decision. Two years ago, Gold Star dad Mark Schmidt, whose son Lance Corporal Jared Schmidt was killed at Abbey Gate, told Newsmax2, “The people that made the decisions that were made that led up to this are literally washing their hands (of the decision.) ‘It’s not me; it’s him.’ … It’s just a circle of nonsense and nobody has any accountability or responsibility about it whatsoever.” On Monday, Harris issued a statement, saying, “I will never hesitate to take whatever action necessary to counter terrorist threats and protect the American people and the homeland.” Schmidt fired back, “I have to remind her she’s been the vice president for the last three and a half years and working side by side with Biden. We still have American citizens left in Afghanistan right now. What is she doing about that? What has Biden done? Nothing. You know, they have left thousands of people behind, and obviously millions or billions in our military assets behind.
