Ohio Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose ordered county election boards to remove 499 non-citizens from their voter rolls on Thursday as he audits the state’s voter registration database ahead of the 2024 election. The audit began in May after the Ohio Public Integrity Division found that 137 people in Ohio were registered to vote despite confirming twice before that they were not U.S. citizens. LaRose’s latest order targets more individuals who confirmed to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) that they are non-citizens, and that status was also confirmed by a review of the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database system, according to LaRose’s office. “I swore an oath to uphold the constitution of our state, and that document clearly states that only United States citizens can participate in Ohio elections,” said LaRose. “That means I’m duty-bound to make sure people who haven’t yet earned citizenship in this country aren’t voting. If or when they do become citizens, I’ll be the first one to congratulate them and welcome them to the franchise, but until then the law requires us to remove ineligible registrations to prevent illegal voting.” The secretary of state added that the investigation into Ohio’s voter rolls is ongoing as officials push to prevent voter fraud in the upcoming election. Those affected by LaRose’s order can still submit a provisional ballot, which will be counted if they prove their citizenship. “I want to give these folks the benefit of the doubt and say that most of them didn’t intend to break the law,” LaRose said. “We want to make sure a mistaken registration doesn’t become an illegal vote. We also want to make sure that lawfully registered citizens can participate seamlessly in the process, especially if their citizenship status changed recently.” Trump won Ohio in both the 2016 and 2020 elections, beating Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden by eight points. Trump is expected to win the state again in 2024, leading Vice President and presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris by around 10 points in the latest polls. LaRose also called on Congress to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act on Thursday, a bill introduced by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) in May which would require documentation proving U.S. citizenship from anyone who registers to vote in U.S. elections. The SAVE ACT narrowly passed the House in July after nearly every Democrat voted against it. President Biden also came out in opposition to the bill. A group of lawmakers is demanding Harvard University terminate a partnership with a Palestinian university whose faculty and students have endorsed and collaborated with Hamas. “If Harvard University sincerely cared about the safety and security of their student body, they would immediately shut down this partnership and condemn Birzeit University,” Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) told The Daily Wire. Stefanik and 27 other lawmakers signed on to a July letter calling for Harvard to “immediately end” its relationship with Birzeit. The universities are partnering to host a “Palestine Social Medicine Course” that brings American students to Birzeit’s campus in Judea and Samaria, also known as the West Bank. Harvard announced last month that it was moving the program to Jordan due to “security concerns in the West Bank.” According to Stefanik, simply moving the program isn’t enough. “Harvard and its morally bankrupt leadership must immediately disband this partnership and condemn the pro-Hamas, anti-Israel hate threatening the survival of our most precious ally,” Stefanik added. Birzeit University called for “glory for the martyrs” after Hamas’s October 7 terrorist attack on Israel, and has a long history of promoting terrorists on its campus. The university has hosted funerals and parades for terrorists on its campus, where several buildings are named after terrorists.  Stefanik said Harvard is continuing to “fail its Jewish students, faculty, and community,” by maintaining its “public partnership with known Hamas collaborator, Birzeit University” Harvard’s three-week course, which kicked off last week and ends on August 17, is “designed to introduce students to the social, structural, political, and historical aspects that determine Palestinian health beyond the biological basis of disease,” according to the program’s website. Birzeit’s relationship with Harvard came under scrutiny after The Daily Wire revealed the Palestinian university’s connections with terrorists and terrorist sympathizers. Hanan Ashwari, chairman of Birzeit University’s board of trustees, denied that Hamas sexually assaulted Israelis on October 7, and has defended Hezbollah and the lynching of Israeli soldiers, according to CAMERA UK. On its website, Birzeit boasts that it is a “thorn in the side of the occupation,” and says it is committed to making an impact through “resistance.”  In 2023, the Birzeit student body elected two blocs affiliated with terrorist organizations—Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP)—into the student government. In the election, which had a 77 percent voter turnout, the Hamas-affiliated Islamic bloc won 25 of the 51 seats, while the PFLP picked up six, according to the Jerusalem Post. Last month, five members of the student council were arrested for attempting to carry out a terror attack on behalf of Hamas. The students were found with an assault rifle and thousands of dollars of cash from Hamas, the Times of Israel reported.

The hosts of ABC’s “The View” worked themselves into a lather over former President Donald Trump’s appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Conference on Wednesday, ending with Whoopi Goldberg’s declaration, “You can’t come back!” The co-hosts went around the table, complaining that Trump had even been invited to appear but not mentioning the fact that Vice President Kamala Harris — now the Democrats’ de facto 2024 nominee — had also been invited but only offered to address the group virtually. Sunny Hostin kicked things off by attacking Trump’s claim that Harris, who is biracial, leaned into her racial identity when it was politically convenient. President Joe Biden said their “brutal ordeal” is over for three American citizens, two journalists and a former Marine, who were arrested and held in Russia, accused of spying. Evan Gershkovich, reporter for The Wall Street Journal, and former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan were both released in a historic prisoner swap on Thursday, the biggest since the Cold War. Also released were Alsu Kurmasheva, a Russian American journalist for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and Vladimir Kara-Murza, a Russian opposition activist who holds an American green card. “This is a good day,” Biden said at a press conference with family members of the prisoners. “Now their brutal ordeal is over and they are free.” “This is an incredible relief for all the families gathered here,” Biden said. “It’s a relief to the friends and colleagues all across the country who have been praying for this day for a long time.” The three Americans were flown to Turkey earlier today and will soon be on their way home to their families, Biden said. The president and the families were able to speak to the prisoners on the telephone from the Oval Office, Biden said. A total of 24 prisoners were released in the deal, which involved at least six countries. Germany, Poland, Norway, Slovenia, and Turkey all cooperated with the U.S. on the prisoner release, Biden said. Russian hit man Vadim Krasikov, who was serving a life sentence in Germany, was reportedly at the center of the agreement. “The deal that made this possible was a feat of diplomacy and friendship,” Biden said. “It says a lot about the United States that we work relentlessly to free Americans who are unjustly held around the world,” the president said. “But it also says a lot about us that this deal includes the release of Russian political prisoners. They stood up for democracy and human rights. Their own leaders threw them in prison. The United States helped secure their release as well. That’s who we are in the United States. We stand for freedom, for liberty, for justice not only for our own people but for others as well.” Biden added that “deals like this come with tough calls.” Biden also prompted the audience to sing “Happy Birthday” to Kurmasheva’s young daughter, Miriam, and gave her a hug. When asked whether he would speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Biden responded, “I don’t need to speak with Putin.” Biden was also asked about former President Donald Trump’s statement that he would secure Journal reporter Gershkovich’s release if re-elected. “Why didn’t he do it when he was president?” Biden responded. Gershkovich, 32, was arrested in March 2023, more than two years after Trump left the White House. Russian authorities accused him of being a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) spy. He was convicted in June. Russian prosecutors alleged that Gershkovich collected “secret information” regarding a Russian defense contractor “using painstaking conspiratorial methods.” He was held in a Stalin-era prison in Moscow and reportedly only allowed one hour a day to walk around. Whelan, 54, a former Marine who is also the former director of global security for auto-parts supplier BorgWarner, was arrested in 2018 at a wedding in Moscow. He was accused of spying and of possessing a flash drive with Russian state secrets. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2020. Kurmasheva, 47, the Russian American journalist, was convicted by a Russian court of spreading false information about Russia’s military. She was sentenced to six and a half years in prison. She was detained in June 2023 while visiting her sick mother. Kara-Murza, the Russian opposition activist and a contributing columnist for The Washington Post, was arrested after he returned to Russia in April 2022. He was charged with treason for speaking out against the war in Ukraine. He claims he had been poisoned by Russian authorities and developed a nerve condition. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Eight Russians were released back to Russia as part of the deal, including several Russian spies, a former high-ranking Russian Federal Security Service colonel convicted of murder by a German court, a Russian citizen accused of scheming to provide American-made electronics and ammunition to Russia, and a Russian businessman who was sentenced in Boston to nine years for a $93 million criminal scheme.
