What Is The Kardashev Scale, And Could It Help Us Find Alien Life?

In the search for extraterrestrial civilizations, it's difficult to know what to look for. During the pursuit, we have tended to search for detectable signals and signs that we ourselves would emit (on purpose, or by accident) on the assumption that aliens will use similar technology, given that they have access to the same physics. It's perfectly logical to do so, but it's not altogether ideal. As we've seen over the last few hundred years on our own planet, intelligent civilizations can quickly abandon old detectable technology as their understanding of the universe increases. For obvious example, we have quickly moved from using analog signals to digital for communication. Though analog signals in the range we used for communication would be a fairly ineffective way of communicating with alien planets, it's possible that alien civilizations could go "radio quiet" in a cosmological half-blink of 100 or so years, just like we have, making detection all the more difficult. As such, scientists have speculated about what kind of signal a more advanced civilization might send, and what technology level would be needed to send them. While of course speculative, we do have some ideas of what kind of signal would make sense, as well as what the message should contain to make it clear it comes from an intelligent being. “In the 1960s, the idea was to focus on a region around a well-known frequency where neutral hydrogen emits radiation in interstellar space, 1.42 GHz," astronomy graduate student at UC Berkeley, Bryan Brzycki, explained to Universe Today. "Since this natural emission is prevalent throughout the galaxy, the idea is that any intelligent civilization would know about it, and potentially target this frequency for transmission to maximize the chance of detection. Since then, especially as technology has rapidly advanced, radio SETI has expanded along all axes of measurement."        Sending signals across the galaxy or universe, particularly continuous signals that would offer our best chance of detection, requires a lot of energy, far more than humans are capable of. In 1963, Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev attempted to calculate the kind of energy involved in sending such information-carrying signals, and the levels of advancement that civilizations would have to be at in order to send them.Kardashev divided these hypothetical civilizations into three types, based on how much energy they are able to harness from their surroundings.Type I civilizations are civilizations which are able to harness all the energy available to them on their planet (given at around 4 x 1019 erg per second) and use it for their own purposes. Type II civilizations are able to harness the energy of their star, e.g. by constructing a Dyson Sphere, theoretical megastructures constructed around stars built for this purpose. Type III civilizations, meanwhile, are alien civilizations capable of harnessing the energy of their whole galaxy. Though the energy productions of Type II and III civilizations are extremely high, based on an increase in energy production on Earth of 1 percent per year Kardashev calculated that humanity would reach those milestones in 3,200 and then 5,800 years. An extended scale, proposed in 2020, suggests a Type IV civilization which is able to harness the energy of their observable universe. According to this team, looking at our energy consumption, humans are currently a Type 0.72 civilization.Detecting Type I civilizations, with their puny output (though far in excess of our own) would be very unlikely, according to Kardashev. But signals sent by Type II and Type III civilizations could be detected (though not replied to) by a Type I civilization with conventional radio telescopes not too far in advance of our own. The assumption in the work is that alien civilizations would be broadcasting scientific information far in advance of our own, with the intent of being heard by less advanced civilizations, which may not be a great idea for any civilization with the goal of staying alive. However, the Kardashev scale gives us an idea of what kind of civilizations are capable of sending signals we may soon be able to detect. If such advanced civilizations exist (and given how vast the universe is, and how long it has dragged on for, it would be a reasonable assumption) it would also give us other things to look for, such as giant megastructures used for harnessing energy.Though we have a pretty good idea of what we are capable of, and might soon be capable of, the universe has been going for far longer timescales. Looking at what an advanced alien species could be capable of may also tell us about our own potential futures. If we search the skies and find no signs of Type III civilizations able to harness energy on galactic scales – which so far we haven't – it may tell us that something prevents intelligent species from reaching that level, and a Great Filter looms ahead of us. An earlier version of this article was published in May 2024.

Peaches The 1-In-30 Million Lobster Just Hatched Some Rare Babies

Peaches the famous orange lobster has welcomed a bumper crop of tiny baby lobsters. Being a 1-in-30 million lobster herself, Peaches’ clutch includes over a dozen of a rare variety, and they've joined the offspring of a second mother lobster, Norma, as the subjects of a research project. The mega family of mini babies calls the University of New England home, a place that’s no stranger to rare lobster news. It houses an impressive line-up of exceptional individuals, including blue, orange, yellow, split-colored, purple, and calico varieties of lobsters, whose rarity ranges from 1-in-1 million to 1-in-50 million.Quite the catch!     Parent Peaches is the proud mom to 100 baby lobsters, meanwhile Norma has a more modest army of 40. Their offspring will hopefully soon be joined by the babies of Pineapple, another rare orange lobster like Peaches who is also housed at UNE.The babies are drawing quite some attention, now the subjects of a project shared by UNE students and faculty. They’ll be monitoring the growing lobsters to see how many match the rare parents’ colorations. Some of the rare babies are even blue.Image credit: Markus Frederich/University of New EnglandThe goal is to search for a genetic basis for these animals’ colorations. At current, the precise genetic mechanisms that cause some lobsters to eschew the traditional brown/mottled appearance in favor of something more jazzy aren’t known, but these babies could bring us closer to finding out.“At this point, no one really knows in detail why some lobsters develop these multicolor variations, though we do have some theories,” UNE’s Dr Markus Frederich, professor of marine sciences, said in a release. “We hope to use this gene expression research to study the molecular biology of these creatures in a way that is not harmful to the lobsters.”Say hello to Norma. You've got to hand it to UNE, they know how to name a lobster.Image credit: Markus Frederich/University of New EnglandOther rare lobster specimens come in yellow, blue, and white. The odds of catching a blue lobster are 1-in-2-million, and both blue and yellow lobsters are the result of a genetic mutation in the proteins that bond with shell pigments.Golden lobsters like this latest addition and Banana are only pipped to the rare lobster post by 1-in-100 million "crystal lobsters" that have a pigment condition called leucism. Interestingly, they're the only wacky lobster variety that doesn't turn red when cooked, which in typical specimens is the result of shell proteins unwinding in the heat and releasing the pigment molecule astaxanthin.Lots of tricks hidden up those lobster claws.

COVID-19 Vaccine Nasal Drops Could Stop Viral Transmission

COVID-19 Vaccine Nasal Drops Could Stop Viral Transmission

You probably associate vaccination with a needle jabbed into your shoulder muscle, giving you that annoying muscle soreness for many hours (even days) after. Traditionally, most vaccinations are delivered in this way: intramuscularly. Now, a new vaccine delivered as nasal drops (just try not to sneeze) shows promise for drastically reducing transmission of airborne disease. When the first COVID-19 vaccines were being rolled out at the end of 2020, even amid the general panic and concern, they brought hope of ending the pandemic. The vaccines were between 75 and 95 percent effective at preventing severe COVID-19, and saved many, many lives. The vaccines, however, were less effective at preventing the spread of the virus, SARS-CoV-2. The Pfizer/BioNTech and AstraZeneca vaccines reduced transmission by between 23 and 57 percent. Vaccinated people could still be contagious. Their symptoms were greatly reduced, thanks to their strengthened immune system, but the virus still proliferated in them and they could pass it on. The pandemic continued. In a new study, researchers asked whether using a nasal vaccine could be more effective at curbing the spread of the virus. The nasal vaccine itself (iNCOVACC) is not new. It was developed in 2021 at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. It is still under trials in the US, but has already been administered as a booster in India since its approval in 2022.“To prevent transmission, you need to keep the amount of virus in the upper airways low,” said senior author Dr Jacco Boon, a professor of medicine, of molecular microbiology, and of pathology & immunology at WashU, in a statement. “The less virus that is there to begin with, the less likely you are to infect someone else if you cough or sneeze or even just breathe on them.” To test the effect of the vaccine on transmission, they immunized Syrian hamsters (a better model organism for SARS-CoV-2 transmission than mice) with either the nasal vaccine or the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. Five weeks later (plenty of time for the vaccine to build up the hamster’s immune response) they exposed them to SARS-CoV-2-infected hamsters. After three days they swabbed the noses of the hamsters (sorry if this gives you horrible flashbacks). In both groups most hamsters tested positive (12/14 for the nasal vaccine and 15/16 for the intramuscular vaccine), but the amount of virus in the mucus (and in the lungs) was dramatically reduced in the hamsters that had received the nasal vaccine compared to both unvaccinated and intramuscularly vaccinated hamsters. That was exciting, because now came the real test. These hamsters were now co-housed with a second cohort of vaccinated and unvaccinated hamsters. Did the lower viral titer in the mucus of the nasally vaccinated hamsters prevent them from further passing on the virus? Yes, it did! Of the hamsters exposed to the nasally vaccinated hamsters, none (not a one!) tested positive for COVID-19, regardless of whether they themselves had been vaccinated or not. By comparison, 60 percent of hamsters of this second cohort exposed to intramuscularly vaccinated hamsters still tested positive.“In an epidemic or pandemic situation, this is the kind of vaccine you’re going to want,” said Dr Boon. These types of vaccines could be used not only for COVID-19, but for other airborne diseases, like the flu.“Mucosal vaccines are the future of vaccines for respiratory infections,” Dr Boon said. “Historically, developing such vaccines has been challenging. There’s still so much we don’t know about the kind of immune response we need and how to elicit it. I think we’re going to see a lot of very exciting research in the next few years that could lead to big improvements in vaccines for respiratory infections.”The study is published in Science Advances.

A Record-Smashing 17 California Condor Chicks Hatch At LA Zoo

A Record-Smashing 17 California Condor Chicks Hatch At LA Zoo

A record-breaking 17 California condor chicks have been hatched at Los Angeles Zoo in a huge boon for the critically endangered species. All of the chicks will be candidates for release into the wild as part of the wider California Condor Recovery Program. The feat was made possible by a new breeding technique developed at LA Zoo in 2017 where animal care staff placed two condor chicks with a surrogate mentor condor to raise the chicks. This year, three chicks were raised at the same time by surrogate condors to maximize the zoo’s ability to raise condors. To further boost the bird’s reproductive abilities, the eggs are taken away from the parents for artificial incubation, enabling breeding pairs to produce more than one viable egg in a season.California condors (Gymnogyps californianus) are a New World vulture and the largest land bird in North America with a wingspan of 2.8 meters (9.5 feet). Fascinatingly, there have been reported instances of them asexually reproducing through parthenogenesis without the input of a male. They're known as nature’s clean-up crew; scavengers that only eat dead animals found on the landscape. They possess incredibly strong stomach juices that help to digest flesh, bones, and fur, and help them resist disease. Their role as scavengers is important to the broader ecosystem as they help to prevent disease outbreaks and release nutrients back into the environment.California condors are the largest North American land bird.Image credit: NPS/Kurt Moses (Public Domain)The species came unbelievably close to extinction in the 1980s. Just 22 California condors remained on the planet in 1983 and the species was declared extinct in the wild in 1987.Habitat loss played a role in their demise, but a leading factor was lead poisoning from spent ammunition. Ingestion of human trash was another major problem, especially among the nestlings that are fed by their parents. In a last-ditch attempt to save the species, the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Fish and Game Commission launched a captive breeding program with the help of LA Zoo – and it has proved fairly successful. According to the latest count, there are 561 California condors in the world, 344 of which are living in the wild. “The L.A. Zoo has been an integral partner in the recovery of the iconic California condor since the inception of the program in the 1980s when the species was at the brink of extinction,” Denise M. Verret, Los Angeles Zoo CEO/Zoo Director, said in a statement. “It is the cornerstone of the Zoo’s mission to save wildlife and an important example of a successful conservation partnership between zoos, government agencies, Indigenous peoples, and private organizations. We are proud to be able to make such a significant contribution to the preservation of nature,” said Verret. The success hasn't come cheap, though. Over $35 million has been spent over the past two decades on the California Condor recovery project, making it one of the most expensive species conservation projects in US history.

LAME: Reuters Worries to KJP About Islamophobia, USA Today Lobs Softie on Kamala

Wednesday’s White House press briefing not only featured two special guests to help prop up the ever-inept Karine Jean-Pierre (Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and national security flack John Kirby), but there were a number of silly questions about climate change, Islamophobia, fawning over Kamala Harris, and live reaction to former President being ambushed at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) conference. Reuters’s Andrea Shalal got in a question to Vilsack and questioned whether he’d be able to ensure the Biden administration’s far-left climate change policies would be cemented and irreversible if Trump wins in November: Reuters's Andrea Shalal hits Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack from the left about how the agency will ensure climate change policies remain in place if Donald Trump wins in November pic.twitter.com/oIbDIynhm7 — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) July 31, 2024 During Kirby’s turn, AFP’s Danny Kemp wondered if the regime would “be urging restraint from Israel” in light of Hezbollah murdering 12 innocent children on a soccer field over the wekened. Kirby hit back that he wouldn’t “talk about our diplomatic discussions with our Israeli counterparts”, but acknowledged Israel needed to be allowed to have “what it needs to defend itself.” Shalal came back around with Jean-Pierre to inquire about an update on a national “Islamophobia strategy” and express hope Harris could unveil it next week in Michigan, home to large Arab populations: Reuters’s Andrea’s Shalal: “So, next week, Vice President Harris is going to Detroi. The UAW has just endorsed her ahead of a rally that'll be taking place in Detroit. The administration began work on an Islamophobia strategy last year. Do you have any kind of an update for us on… pic.twitter.com/lkIy37sOC3 — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) July 31, 2024 Meanwhile, USA Today’s Joey Garrison had this insanely loaded softball inviting Jean-Pierre to share what Biden thinks of Harris’s “strong initial enthusiasm the Democratic voters are showing” with improved polling, large crowds, and oodles of money: Softball from USA Today’s Joey Garrison: “What’s President Biden's reaction been so far on the strong initial enthusiasm the Democratic voters are showing for Kamala Harris's candidacy. She had a rally in Atlanta last night with over 10,000 people, raised more than 2 million —… pic.twitter.com/sGvolJxsiA — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) July 31, 2024 Showing coordination in the liberal media’s world, NBC’s Peter Alexander chose to not follow-up on a question from a reporter on the CBS seat about why Biden and Harris have ducked the NABJ Conference, but instead read Trump’s comments on Harris’s racial identity as a softball to hit out of the park. Notice how the camera zoomed in as Jean-Pierre spoke (click “expand”): NBC’s @PeterAlexander: “If I can ask you about something that’s happening at the NABJ right now....[Donald Trump] says of Kamala Harris, the Vice President, ‘she was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn't know she was black until a number… pic.twitter.com/bUjnifjZsU — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) July 31, 2024 ALEXANDER: If I can ask you about something that’s happening at the NABJ right now. JEAN-PIERRE: Yeah. ALEXANDER: Donald Trump is speaking to some of the reporters who were assembled there and right out of the gates, there was what can best be described as a contentious exchange where the former President said — I’m asking this through the lens of someone who represents the President, Vice President, not someone who has to speak as a campaign question, he says of Kamala Harris, the Vice President, “she was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black,” he said, and “now, she wants to be known as black, so I didn’t know is she Indian or is she black?” JEAN-PIERRE: Wow. ALEXANDER: “She has always a —” uh, this is unclear — “I respect either one, but she obviously doesn’t because she was Indian all the way and then all of a sudden she made a turn and she went black.” Your response to those comments? JEAN-PIERRE: Haha! Uh, he is a candidate, so I’m going to be super careful. ALEXANDER: You’re — you’re speaking [inaudible]. JEAN-PIERRE: Wait, no, no, no, hold on, hold on. I have more to say. I certainly have more to say. As a person of color, as a black woman, who is in this position that is standing before you at this podium behind this lectern, what he just said, what you just read out to me is repulsive. It’s insulting and, you know, no one has any right to tell someone who they are, how they identify. That is no one’s right. It is someone’s own decisions. It is — uh — I’ll add this. Only she can speak to her experience. Only she can speak to what it’s like. She’s the only person that can do that and I think it’s insulting for anybody — it doesn’t matter if it’s a former leader, a former president — it — it is insulting and we have to put — she is the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris. We have to put some respect on her name, period. ALEXANDER: Thank you. Fox’s Jacqui Heinrich was also there and wondered where in the world is Joe Biden and, given his lack of public appearances, “[i]t lends itself to the appearance that he’s done governing.” Jean-Pierre scoffed: JACQUI TIME from earlier: “[C]ould you sort of give us an idea of how much the President's schedule has changed since the ticket changed? Because if you look at what we look at, the big event on Tuesday was a phone call. Big event today is a lunch. Tomorrow, we don't know what… pic.twitter.com/F9YaNzTWmB — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) July 31, 2024 Heinrich then brought up what’s happened in the Middle East and why has Harris and Biden’s Secretaries of Defense and State weighed in publicly, but not him. Given Thursday morning’s massive, multi-national prison swap centered around Russia and the U.S., Jean-Pierre’s answer of “stay tuned” and promises that “you’re going to hear from the President later this week” make more sense. CNN’s Kayla Tausche went beyond that and implied Biden being MIA means it’ll continue given the heavy campaigning his Vice President will now have to do: CNN’s @KaylaTausche: “You said that, with each event the president does, there's a discussion about whether to open it up to press and in what way. I'm just wondering if you could elaborate a little bit on the rationale behind not showing the president on two days where the Vice… pic.twitter.com/UvcG814ZtR — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) July 31, 2024 To see the relevant transcript from the July 31 briefing, click here.

'I finally broke free': Liberal tech CEO rejects Democratic Party, endorses Trump

A high-profile tech entrepreneur has revealed that he is parting ways with the Democratic Party and endorsing President Donald Trump. David Marcus co-founded Facebook's abandoned cryptocurrency venture Diem, ran the Facebook Messenger unit for years, and served as president of PayPal. He is now the chief executive of a cryptocurrency startup called Lightspark. Hazarding inevitable backlash and vilification from the media and former allies alike, Marcus revealed in an essay on X Wednesday that he is "crossing the Rubicon" and joining the ever-growing roster of affluent entrepreneurs desperate for a return of competence, stability, and strength to the White House. According to Marcus, the Democratic establishment's censorial reflex, dishonesty, ruinous "DEI agenda," indifference to illegal immigration, and failed foreign policy hastened his journey toward the party of Lincoln — a journey apparently marked by an "eye-opening process of disenchantment, zero-basing lifelong beliefs, and rebuilding." "Many — including a former version of myself — get trapped in a mental framework that becomes their identity and prevents them from radically evolving their thinking with new facts and information. I finally broke free from it," wrote Marcus. Marcus admitted at the outset that he was long captive to the notion that "Democrats were all about serving the People." This belief inclined him to want to help the Democratic National Committee shake down Silicon Valley executives for cash in the wake of the 2016 presidential election and build a "CRM and tech platform to prevent a repeat of Hillary Clinton’s inadequate, outdated 2016 campaign." Over time, however, Marcus said that he "was shocked to learn that, for the most part, Republicans cared more deeply about their constituents, while Democrats ... cared more about government power and control." Marcus also came to understand and fully appreciate precisely "why Republicans value freedom of speech and preventing censorship" — an issue he has occasionally spoken about in recent years. During the pandemic, Marcus observed how vaccine and lockdown critics were silenced as well as how the virus' likely lab origin was actively covered up. His alienation grew upon realizing this private-public narrative curation was not limited to matters of supposed public health. "This trend of spinning and manufacturing a parallel reality to serve the Dem agenda, solidified by complicit mainstream media, hit home with the Hunter Biden laptop story, the coordinated vilification of President Trump and his followers, and President Biden’s cognitive decline — depriving voters of a voice in a proper primary," wrote Marcus. Extra to bemoaning Democrats' loose relationship with the truth, Marcus indicated he was prompted across the political divide by the Biden-Harris administration's failed foreign policy as well as by Democrats' cultivation of an "anti-innovation regulatory climate, notably on crypto and soon AI." Regarding foreign policy, Marcus criticized the Democratic administration's willingness to exacerbate tensions with Russia "through an aggressive NATO expansion narrative focused on Ukraine and prolonging an unwinnable war"; its depletion of the U.S. military arsenal; its deadly Afghanistan withdrawal; its enablement of Iran; and its supposed prolongation of the Israel-Hamas conflict. Marcus suggested that Trump would chart a different and much-needed course. I believe we need a President who is unequivocally pro: America, the Constitution, business, Bitcoin/crypto, innovation, Israel, small government, legal immigration, free speech, meritocracy, and common sense — and anti: regulatory proliferation, illegal immigration, unjust wars, Iran's current regime, and domestic groups that oppose American values. These issues are central to President Trump’' platform. According to the tech entrepreneur, Trump, who "incarnated the American spirit in the most vivid way" immediately upon being shot by a failed assassin, is a far better choice than the alternative: "Having unelected individuals with this much power and no accountability run our government coupled with four more years of bad policies at home and abroad." Marcus' endorsement comes weeks after Tesla and X owner Elon Musk wrote, "I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery," less than an hour after the former president survived an assassination attempt at his campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, who run one of Silicon Valley's big venture capital firms, also revealed last month that they were throwing their weight behind Trump. Palantir founder Joe Lonsdale, Pershing Square Capital Management founder Bill Ackman, and other big names in Silicon Valley and on Wall Street threw their support behind Trump even before the assassination attempt. Others may be keeping their cards close to their chests. Bruce Freed, president and co-founder of the Center for Political Accountability, recently told the Christian Science Monitor that "many are quite cautious," keen to "keep doors open" with elements of both parties. Lonsdale thanked Marcus for his "intellectual courage." Others, including Trump ally Gen. Mike Flynn, noted, "You will now find out if you have true friends or not." Like Blaze News? Comic-Con sting operation busts sex trafficking ring — 1 minor, 9 adult victims rescued

A recent undercover sting operation resulted in the rescue of 10 victims, including one minor, and the arrest of 14 alleged sex buyers at the San Diego Comic-Con, according to a recent press release from the office of Attorney General Rob Bonta (D).The AG's office, along with the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force, sent undercover law enforcement officers on a three-day operation to pose as sex buyers, posting fake advertisements soliciting sex to locate and identify potential victims and carry out the arrests of traffickers. The operation successfully arrested more than a dozen alleged sex buyers and rescued nine adult victims and a 16-year-old girl. 'Coercion and violence which enslaves people for profit.'"Child Welfare Services and adult and juvenile support service advocates were on scene to provide support as needed," the press release noted.Bonta explained that sex traffickers use the annual Comic-Con in San Diego and other "large-scale events" as opportunities to exploit victims. Comic-Con draws more than 100,000 attendees."These arrests send a clear message to potential offenders that their criminal behavior will not be tolerated," Bonta said. "We are grateful to all our dedicated partners involved in the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force, whose collaboration has been invaluable. We take great pride in our office's commitment to uplifting vulnerable Californians by offering them assistance and guidance when they need it most."San Diego Sheriff Kelly Martinez called human trafficking the most "insidious crime.""The coercion and violence which enslaves people for profit and places them into forced labor or sex is criminal," Martinez stated. "As the sheriff I support the efforts of all our justice partners in holding perpetrators accountable. I appreciate the focus that was placed on the recent convention to identify and rescue victims of human trafficking."San Diego Police Chief Wahl remarked, "Working together, teams identified and arrested more than a dozen individuals participating in these illegal acts in our city over the weekend. This successful operation recovered 10 victims of human trafficking, including a girl of just 16 years old. These results show our collective dedication to combatting human trafficking and holding criminals accountable are working."The San Diego Comic Convention told Fox News Digital it was unaware of the sting operation. "Obviously, we find this very disturbing, and while we were not made aware of this operation, it is our understanding that the arrests were made outside of the event," the convention stated. "We work closely with a variety of law enforcement entities throughout the year and stand ready to assist in any way we can."Like Blaze News? Counter-Strike creator regrets not balancing the AWP

Between 1.6, Source, CSGO, and Counter-Strike 2, the PC’s favorite multiplayer shooter has been through innumerate changes in the last 25 years. Originally a mod for Valve’s Half-Life, Counter-Strike has grown into the most popular game on Steam. But despite its myriad evolutions, there has been one constant: from its earliest days to its modern mega stardom, in CS, the most controversial weapon has always been the AWP. A bolt-action sniper rifle that deals serious damage, the AWP is Counter-Strike’s high-risk, high-reward gambit gun. To some, it’s a ballistic instrument that takes mastery and skill. To others, it’s an overpowered menace used only by the lowliest players. Now, Counter-Strike’s co-creator weighs in. AMD’s gaming GPU sales are officially plummeting

AMD has just announced that the revenue from its Gaming segment has dropped by a massive 59% compared to this period last year. The Gaming division is the part of the company responsible for gaming GPUs, not only the AMD Radeon chips used for PC graphics cards, but also the custom chips the firm makes for consoles, such as the PlayStation 5, and sales are evidently in decline. It’s the latter that AMD has specifically pinpointed as being a driving factor in the decline of sales in its latest financial statement. Meanwhile, AMD’s Radeon GPUs still power some of the best graphics card models you can buy right now, including the Radeon RX 7800 XT, but the company has struggled to keep pace with Nvidia on ray tracing and upscaling.
