Published with permission. * * * That just 5.2 percent of my class at Harvard admits to being Republican is no secret — it was the statistic published in The Crimson’s annual incoming freshman survey for the Class of 2025. But the fact that many of the remaining 94.8 percent actively try to ostracize and dissociate from conservatives on campus — while also not a secret — is vastly more disturbing. In the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s resounding victory on November 5, students took to social media platforms like Sidechat, an anonymous social media platform, to lambast their peers who simply voted for Trump. “No matter who wins tonight, the fact that so many vote for Trump is f*cking terrifying,” read one post, which was upvoted by 407 Harvard students. Other students called conservatives at Harvard “freaks,” “misogynists,” “fascists,” and the “stupidest people on campus.” Some even told them to “unenroll please, it’s frankly embarrassing.” Most damning was a post which read “Accept the consequences of your beliefs. Want lower taxes, take social alienation.” Notwithstanding these petty efforts to undermine and intimidate campus Republicans into suppressing their viewpoints, as president of the Harvard Republican Club, I can state unequivocally that it has never been a better time to be a Republican on campus. Since my election as HRC President just one year ago, our student mailing list has grown exponentially from 100 to over 800 — more than 10 percent of Harvard’s student body. We’ve rolled out a career mentorship program and an Alumni Advisory Board, we’ve significantly increased the number of events hosted, and we’ve dramatically increased the average attendees at these events over seven-fold from less than 20 to almost 150. This rapid success is due, in no small part, to the HRC hosting a wide array of high-profile speakers who espouse views across the conservative ideological spectrum — from businessmen like PayPal co-founder Peter A. Thiel and Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale to former ambassadors like Trevor Traina, think tank leaders like Heritage Foundation President Kevin D. Roberts, former governors like Asa Hutchinson, former Secretary of Homeland Security Chad F. Wolf, and Cabinet nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ’76. While I may not agree with every mentor or speaker’s opinion, their diverse perspectives and ideas reflect the broad, open-minded, and welcoming organization the HRC has built over the past year. It was a similarly broad coalition that propelled Trump, whom we proudly endorsed in July, to a spectacularly decisive victory — a group of people with varied ideas about America’s future united behind their Republican identity. Of course, the success of any political movement hinges on engaging others who may not agree with a cause, convincing them to ultimately view it positively. This is particularly true at Harvard, where some of my peers have likely never actually engaged with a conservative. From their first year on campus, many often self-isolate into groups that reinforce their opinions. These students’ perceptions of conservatives are borne exclusively from what their media of choice feeds them, and thus our purportedly “educated” student body blindly associates Republicans with every negative “ism” they have been taught to embrace. CHECK OUT THE DAILY WIRE HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE Over the past year, the HRC has seen a record number of self-identified Democrats attend our events and use our resources. We’ve facilitated important conversations across party lines (including a debate between Republicans and Democrats at Visitas) and brought a diverse set of perspectives to those who sought them out. Our success — like the national Republican Party’s success — is contingent on a diverse coalition only possible when we embrace heterogenous opinions and allow for robust conversations. Just look at Trump’s new Cabinet: It includes many former Democrats, including Kennedy and Representative Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii). Those surprised by Trump’s victory earlier this month might assume that Republican life at Harvard is dead. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Our events are more than well attended, our speakers top-tier, and our energy through the roof. And perhaps most importantly, many Republicans are willing to openly embrace their values on campus, despite the aforementioned social media posts. I encourage those interested in stepping out of their comfort zone and challenging their preconceived notions about conservatives to take advantage of the movement we’ve built. Instead of attempts at name-calling, intimidation, and ostracization, seek out Republicans. Listen to what they believe. Heck, even argue with them if you want. But at least engage with their ideas on a meaningful level. She follows the HOT TO GO! lyrics, but instead of singing, “I’ll take this city,” she sings, “I’ll take this barn. I’ve got all these goats to keep me warm.” She continues mixing the original song lyrics with her own, swapping “It’s like a hundred 99 degrees” with “I brought along my six degrees,” a nod to her father. And Kevin says, “That’s us.” Kevin, Kyra, and Sosie then jam to “G-O-A-T-O-G-O.” Fans loved Kevin Bacon’s take on HOT TO GO! One wrote on Instagram, “This is what the holiday is all about! Happy Thanksgiving, Bacon fam!” This person loved the parody, “Very clever change in original song.” Plenty of fans noticed how much fun they all seemed to have. “Happy Thanksgiving! A married couple is on a 7-day Caribbean cruise. At the port of call in St. Maarten, they take a private catamaran to a small island where they find an old gold ring. Soon afterward, things become interesting!I received the following account:"Hello. My husband and I had an experience that we just cannot explain. An associate at work suggested I write you so that you (or your readers) may be able to help us comprehend what has happened and if we are in any peril.Last Autumn, my husband and I took a 7-day cruise vacation that left from Port Canaveral, Florida with ports of call in the eastern Caribbean. We needed a break because of work stress and the constant activity endured by us helping to plan our daughter’s wedding. The cruise was going along nicely and as anticipated.The final port of call was in Philipsburg, St. Maarten. I was looking forward to this destination since my sister had visited there previously. We have arranged for a catamaran sail as part of our day-long stop at the port. After walking around the town for a few hours we reached the tour company that provided the catamaran ride to a small island a few miles from Philipsburg. It was a delightful excursion to and from the island with food and drink as well as pleasant interaction with the crew. But there was one aspect of this small trip that needs to be emphasized.My husband and I took a walk on the beach of the small island (I forget the name of the island) and, after a while, decided to take a breather on a small outcrop of rocks. We sat and talked about dinner that evening and hoped we’d be able to be seated at a nice local restaurant since we had not made reservations. As we talked, my husband noticed something between several of the rocks. He reached down a pulled up a large ring that looked very old and seemed to be made of gold. We examined it and noticed that the design on the face was that of a bird and what looked like a lightning bolt. There was an inscription inside the band that read ‘Mes voiles coeur avec vous - Manon – 1723’ (Translates: My heart sails with you – Manon – 1723). I can speak French so I was able to translate the inscription.My husband, who is a high school history teacher, speculated that it may have belonged to a French privateer at one time. He said that he’d wait and have it looked at when we returned home to Chicago. He placed it in his pocket and we continued with our day. We spent the late evening in our cabin relaxing on our cabin balcony and conversing about our trip.The next morning, there was a knock on our cabin door. I looked at the clock - it was 7:15 am. My husband got up and answered the door. He was talking with our cabin steward whose voice I recognized. We invited him inside – he was quite distressed. He explained that the couple in the cabin beside ours had a terrible experience the previous evening and that they insisted we were responsible. We were very surprised by this information because we had never met this couple. The cabin steward explained that the couple did not want to cause trouble but they insisted that they talk to us. We agreed to meet them.About an hour later, after we showered and had some breakfast, we walked next door to the couples’ cabin – the cabin steward accompanied us. A young woman answered the door, introduced herself to us, and asked that we sit down. She was very nervous. I asked if anyone else would be talking with us. She explained that her companion was very wary of us and wanted to avoid our presence. My husband and I looked at each other in amazement. What had we done to incite fear in this couple?A few seconds later, my husband motioned for me to look at the dresser. I turned and looked. The ring we had found the previous day was on the dresser. My husband turned to the young woman and asked “Does that ring belong to you?” She started to cry, then she shouted “Take it back and leave!” My husband stood up and said ‘Wait one second’ as he turned towards the door and walked out. I knew where he was going – he was looking for the ring in our cabin. I looked at the young woman and said “Look, what is going on here?” She did not answer.The cabin steward suspected what was happening and said "If this is a theft, I need to report it.” I asked him to wait until my husband returned. Soon after, my husband walked back into the cabin and said “It’s gone.” The young woman looked up and said, “Yeah, we took it last night.” After assuring her that we would not report or prosecute the theft, she calmed down and explained what happened.The young woman stated that the previous evening she and her companion were walking back to their cabin when they noticed my husband and I were getting ready to enter our cabin. My husband had reached into his pocket to retrieve the keycard and when he did, the ring somehow came out and fell to the floor. Neither one of us had noticed it but the couple both saw it hit the floor and bounce over to the opposite wall. After we had entered our cabin the couple picked up the ring and decided that it was now theirs.As she continued to describe what had happened, she became more emotional as tears rolled down her face. She explained that after they had gone to sleep, the cabin lit up as bright as the morning sun – so bright that it woke both of them. Then they noticed deep horrific growling sounds coming from across the cabin near the sofa. As they watched, a woman in a billowy pink dress began to manifest before them. They were totally terrified and unable to speak or move. The apparition moved towards them and hovered above the bed. As its bright yellow eyes gazed upon them a voice rang out ‘Donner mon Seigneur son anneau!’ and again ‘Donner mon Seigneur son anneau !’ (Translated: Give my Lord his ring). The specter continued to speak the same words until it finally faded away and the room turned dark.“Now, take the ring and leave. I beg you not to report this.” I looked at the cabin steward. He was in shock - holding a rosary and praying under his breath. My husband said, “Let’s go.” He grabbed the ring and we walked back to our cabin.We talked about the ring and what we would do with it. We contemplated throwing it into the ocean. Then we wondered if there was historical value and if we to donate it to a museum or university. That was five months ago and we still possess the ring. My husband said that he would like to have it researched but has not yet done anything. A Northwestern Ontario fisherman, with his dog, came face-to-face with a greenish-brown humanoid. The dog was grabbed by this creature, sustaining an ear injury.I received the following account:"This encounter is hard to explain. I was fishing in a river in Northwestern Ontario, about a mile and a half from my grandmother’s house. I had always walked there and fished from the bank, where I’d gone since I was a kid. I was down fishing with my dog (named Queenie) and was sitting and leaning against a tree. Then my bobber went down hard and my rod almost went out of my hands. I figured I had a bass or catfish. For some reason though I started following my line as if something was drawing me in. Queenie was freaking out, growling and even biting my leg trying to get me back but I kept following it as if I were in a trance.Then something broke the surface of the water in front of me, and all I could see was this torso and head of like a greenish-brown head and I saw its hand (yes a HAND) was pulling my line towards it and I was so scared but couldn’t stop as it brought me closer.Then Queenie was between us barking and snapping at it and I was able suddenly to go back towards the bank, leaving everything. I saw it grab Queenie and grabbing at my knife I cut the line which I guess broke the trance. As I struggled out of the water I saw Queenie and grabbed her and ran out of the water. I heard a weird slapping sound and a grunt and I kept running until I was almost home.I saw that Queenie was hurt, one of her ears was gone and bleeding and I finally got to the house. I was crying and threw her in the car and straight to the vet, still wet and shaking. I told him something got her and waited anxiously until he came back and said she was lucky, that he had extracted a tooth from her skull. He said it looked like an alligator tooth but I knew better. I never told my family about what happened but I knew damn well it wasn’t an alligator!" A report referencing a winged humanoid sighting in Lee County, Florida. There were either two sightings of the same winged humanoid or there were others in the area.I received the following account:"Hi. I had an encounter with a bird-like creature but I know it wasn't a bird. It looked to be a flying person. I know it sounds weird and crazy but I know what I saw. Well here's the whole story. On February 5, 2018, around 11:30 pm my older sister and her husband were taking me, my little sister, my mom, and my two nieces to eat at Denny's in a nearby town (Fort Myers, FL). As we were driving on I-75 out of nowhere, through the windshield, I saw a person with wings fly over our car. It went over two times back and forth. I got a good look. It looked like a person with wings but then again it also looked like a pterodactyl (pterosaur). My brother-in-law also saw it and agreed with me. He says it was not a bird! Well, that was my encounter with the creature.My nephew also witnessed a person-like creature. He was walking to his girlfriend's house late at night and by her neighbor's house, there are some trees. He said he saw a person/figure standing in the trees looking at him. He asked his girlfriend if she also saw it - she said that it was always there. He then started to walk closer to get a better view of it when the creature jumped off the tree onto his girlfriend's neighbor's fence causing it to make a rattling noise. The dogs started barking and then the creature flew off in front of his eyes. It then ran into his girlfriend's house scared it would come back but it didn't. My nephew's encounter happened in Lehigh Acres, FL a couple of days before my encounter happened! We have no clue as to what it is or why it would be following us?! It is very mind-boggling!" NNOTE: While digging deep into the history of the area, I found another cryptid in Lee County, FL. This was a monster that was eventually reported in the local news:A Lee County Monster"A correspondent contributes to the Fort Myers Press a story of an immense serpent lately seen crossing the Caloosahatchee river near Chokoloskee, and the Press calls upon The Herald to match the story. As we have no big snakes in this locality, The Herald gives it up and begs to repeat what it said to Col. Tom Appleyard, that it is not an authority on snakes; and as no one in the office drinks liquor, none of us have had the pleasure of seeing snakes.But here is the narrative of the Lee County serpent as it appeared in last week’s Press:Col. Demere and Ervin Lowe came down last Sunday [presumably October 4], and reported having seen an immense snake swim the river about two miles from here.They say it appeared to be a great log on the water when they first saw it, but they learned it was a snake when they got to where it was, as the tail was just leaving the water on the south side of the river, and its head stood up four or five feet high, twenty yards from the river, and looked as large as a nail keg.Of course, the reptile must have been between fifty and sixty feet long, and its body looked about the size of a flour barrel. Now this looks fishy, but no one in this section would doubt the veracity of either of these gentlemen.We have since learned that the Indians have told of such a snake twenty years ago, having been seen by them in a certain swamp, and they always kept away from that swamp. About a decade ago I received a narrative from a reader who forwarded a 'werewolf' incident that occurred in and around Sarasota, Florida. The account included the following statement:"I was coming home and as I got closer to the tracks, there was this huge thing lying in the road. I thought it must have been a Mastiff or Great Dane in the road, but as I pulled up to it it didn't look like a dog I'd ever seen. It was hairy, it's head and nose was twice the size of a dog - the body wasn't a dog, just dog-like, but much, much bigger. It was all over the place, there was an arm on the road! Not dog a human arm."In today's report, I received the description of two cryptid canine sightings by two different people at two different locations in Florida. Both of the witnesses were brothers! Tell me what you think:"In the summer of 2018, my oldest son and his wife were traveling from Daytona Beach on Highway 100 towards Ocala. They were driving a work van with trailer going 60 mph around 12 midnight. There were no lights on the road but their headlights illuminated a creature standing on the side of the road looking across towards the other side of the road. As they were approching it never looked into the headlights but kept staring across the road.The description was a bipedal wolf-like creature that appeared to be predominately bare-skinned, though there was hair on some parts of the body. They described the face as 'evil' with visible teeth. It was very tall. My son stated that it was everybit as tall as the van he was driving. They continued on their way, praying that they would not break down.My youngest son was driving home along the same route he did every night. This was in Polk County, Fl. It was around 1:30 am. On consecutive nights, while traveling on the same stretch of road, a wolf-like creature ran in front of his car on all fours. It was HUGE - its back was four foot from the ground and had a large, well-developed muscular chest which tapered dramatically towards abdomen & flanks. It also had a large bushy tail.Have there been similar reports anywhere in Florida?" CI had an additional large wolf report northeast of Clearwater, FL several years ago along with other less descriptive sightings. There’s something about Donald Trump winning an election that drives journalists crazy. The National Press Club in the nation’s capital is an epicenter of media arrogance, as anyone could see from its Nov. 21 “Fourth Estate Award Gala,” in which they proclaimed they were honoring the “fearless pursuit of truth.” But as always, the “truth” is expected to lead to “justice,” which in their view is the opposite of Trump winning the presidency again. Trump’s victory demoralized journalists. They felt like 76.8 million Americans completely ignored their years and years or besmirching Trump as a fascist threat to democracy. Axios.com co-founder Jim VandeHei uncorked a temper tantrum at the awards ceremony as he boasted about being in a “war for truth, for freedom.” Translation: For the Democrats. He can’t stand anyone attacking them for making “fake news” or for, ahem, engaging in nonstop Democratic Party talking points. Joy! Vibes! Brat! And all that. “I’m not going to sugarcoat it, like, everything we do is under fire,” VandeHei complained. “Elon Musk sits on Twitter every day, or X today, saying, like, ‘We are the media, you are the media.’ My message to Elon Musk is: Bulls–t! You’re not the media. You having—you having a blue check mark, a Twitter handle, and 300 words of cleverness doesn’t make you a reporter!” This is a little funny, since Axios.com was touted by the National Press Club for its “smart brevity.” When it writes little bursts of text for busy, governing-elite people with low attention spans, they’re still hailed as “smart.” At 1 a.m. on election night, as it became apparent Trump would win again, Musk tweeted, “You are the media.” This enraged VandeHei because journalism is an elite profession for highly educated people who educate the masses, even if the masses don’t accept their lessons. VandeHei lamented, “Being a reporter’s hard. Really hard. You have to care. You have to do the hard work. You have to get up every single day and say, ‘I want to get to the closest approximation of the truth without any fear, without any favoritism.’ You don’t do that by popping off on Twitter. You don’t do that by having an opinion. You do it by doing the hard work.” VandeHei seems to forget that part of the reason people don’t trust journalists is they show a lot of favoritism. They fear being seen as too centrist by their colleagues. They spend large amounts of time popping off on Twitter and opinionating on cable television. Opinions are more highly prized than investigations. Investigative reporters aren’t making Scarborough money. Naturally, “Morning Joe” played some of VandeHei’s tantrum, and Joe Scarborough asked for a “slow clap,” like VandeHei was Tom Cruise at the end of “Top Gun.” Scarborough oafishly equated all media criticism with lying: “It continues to need to be said when all of the garbage that’s flying around on social media, lying about reporters, lying about the hard work they do, lying about the hard work editors do, lying about everything up and down about not only their alternative set of facts, but alternative set of facts about what people like you do.” Did he produce any examples? No. Because ovations and overbroad opinionating are all that matters. If “smart” journalists want to figure out the election results, they can’t conclude that every media criticism is a lie. They have to engage with critiques and stop thinking they are the most heroic and crucial actors in politics—that democracy dies when people unsubscribe. They need to talk less and listen more.
