NGO responds to allegations it subjected children to ‘repeated’ sexual abuse

A recent Department of Justice lawsuit accused a prominent nongovernmental organization of subjecting unaccompanied children to “repeated” sexual abuse and harassment. The nonprofit responded to the allegations, claiming that the DOJ's complaint "does not present the accurate picture of the care and commitment our employees provide to the youth and children."Southwest Key Programs, a Texas-based nonprofit, partners with the Department of Health and Human Services to provide housing to minors who unlawfully cross into the United States without a parent or guardian. According to its website, the organization is “an integral partner in the U.S. response to the immigration crisis at our southern border.” 'The child’s accounts were partially corroborated by video footage.'The DOJ’s lawsuit claimed, “From at least 2015 through at least 2023, multiple Southwest Key employees have subjected unaccompanied children in their care to repeated and unwelcome sexual abuse, harassment, and misconduct and a hostile housing environment, including severe sexual abuse and rape, solicitation of sex acts, solicitation of nude photos, entreaties for sexually inappropriate relationships, sexual comments and gestures, leering, and inappropriate touching.”The suit alleged that some of the children were “threatened” by the employees to “maintain their silence” about the abuse. The organization was accused of “fail[ing] to take appropriate action to protect the children in its care.”According to the DOJ, the children impacted by the alleged abuse were as young as 5 years old. After unaccompanied minors are apprehended by Border Patrol at the southern border, they are placed with the HHS’ Office of Refugee Resettlement, which is responsible for providing humanitarian care and housing. The agency partners with several NGOs to provide these services, including Southwest Key.As part of its partnership with the federal government, the HHS provides NGOs with grants funded by American taxpayers. The DOJ’s complaint noted that Southwest Key is “the largest private care provider of housing for unaccompanied children in the United States.” The NGO operated 29 shelters, accommodating roughly 6,350 children.“Between fiscal years 2015 and 2023, Southwest Key received over three billion dollars in funding from HHS,” it added.During that period of time, the organization received complaints of sexual abuse and harassment “at the majority” of its facilities, the DOJ claimed. In one instance in 2022, an 8-year-old girl reported that a Southwest Key youth care worker “repeatedly” entered her bedroom at night to abuse her. The worker was also accused of inappropriately touching a 5-year-old girl and an 11-year-old girl. He allegedly “threatened to kill their families if they disclosed the abuse.”In 2019, a teenage girl passed a note to her teacher stating that a shift leader had “repeatedly raped, abused, and threatened” her.“She reported she believed that Southwest Key employees were covering to protect the Shift Leader because, among other things, he would regularly switch assignments with other staff so that he could be alone with her,” the DOJ’s lawsuit read. “The child’s accounts were partially corroborated by video footage of the Shift Leader entering her bedroom and her journal documenting abuse. In addition, employees observed the Shift Leader’s failure to follow bedroom check policy and routinely entering the child’s bedroom (as well as entering other children’s bedrooms) for periods of time without other employees present.”The DOJ’s complaint listed numerous other incidents of sexual abuse and harassment allegedly committed by the NGO’s employees. It is unclear how many children were allegedly subjected to the abuse.HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra stated, “HHS has a zero-tolerance policy for all forms of sexual abuse, sexual harassment, inappropriate sexual behavior, and discrimination.”“The U.S. Department of Justice’s complaint against Southwest Key raises serious pattern or practice concerns. HHS will continue to work with the Justice Department and oversight agencies to hold its care-giving programs like Southwest Key accountable. And we will continue to closely evaluate our assignment of children into care-giving programs to ensure the safety and well-being of every child in HHS custody,” Becerra added. The HHS’ Administration for Children and Families declined the Daily Caller New Foundation’s request for comment, deferring to the DOJ, which also declined to comment. Blaze News reported on the allegations against Southwest Key last week, but at that time, the NGO had not publicly commented on the lawsuit. A spokesperson for Southwest Key has since told the DCNF that it still partners with the HHS’ Office of Refugee Resettlement.“Southwest Key Programs’ primary focus is the safety, health, and well-being of each one of the children and youth we care for,” the spokesperson told the DCNF. “We continue to review the complaint, and it does not present the accurate picture of the care and commitment our employees provide to the youth and children.”Like Blaze News? 'Monumental' fortification that protected Jerusalem's biblical kings discovered, reveals hidden history from 3,000 years ago

Archaeologists have uncovered a "monumental" fortification that protected Jerusalem's biblical kings some 3,000 years ago. The "dramatic" archaeological discovery solved a 150-year-old mystery in the City of David. Since 2007, archaeologists have been excavating the area around the Givati Parking Lot, the largest active archaeological excavation in Jerusalem today. The excavation site on the northwestern side of the City of David has unearthed different layers of the city's life from the Middle Ages to ancient times.'The creation of the moat was a large-scale, monumental operation, designed ... to demonstrate the power of Jerusalem’s rulers to those who entered its gates.'The most recent archaeological find is the remnants of a moat that split the City of David in half — separating the king's palace and Temple Mount from the rest of the city, including the Ophel in Jerusalem. The fortification aligns with the city's division noted in the Bible as Ophel and Millo. In the first Book of Kings (11:27), King Solomon described a fortification known as Millo."And this was the cause that he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon built Millo, and repaired the breaches of the City of David his father," the Bible verse reads. Archaeologists had been searching for the route of Jerusalem's northern fortification for 150 years. However, the recent excavation finally solved the riddle and revealed a city-dividing moat with unclimbable perpendicular cliffs on both sides.“It is not known when the moat was first dug, but it is clear that it was used during the centuries when Jerusalem was the capital of the Kingdom of Judah – almost 3,000 years ago, starting from the days of King Josiah,” said Tel Aviv University professor Yuval Gadot and Israel Antiquities Authority’s Dr. Yiftach Shalu. The archaeologists added, “During those years, it divided between the extension of the city that spread to the south and was served as the residence of the people of Jerusalem and the Acropolis – the upper city, which was where the palace and the temple were located and stood on the Temple Mount, to the north.”“The connection of the two exposed sections creates a deep and wide trench that stretches across About 70 meters at least, from west to east,” Gadot noted. “Following the dramatic discovery, we reexamined the past excavations reports written by the British archaeologist Kathleen Kenyon, who excavated in the City of David in the 1960s, in an area located slightly east of today’s Givati Parking Lot.” Gadot said the "dramatic discovery" has opened up a "renewed discussion of terms from biblical literature that relate to the topography of Jerusalem," which includes Ophel and Millo. The Israel Antiquities Authority said of the engineering efforts involved in the moat's construction, “The creation of the moat was a large-scale, monumental operation, designed to change and modify the natural topography to demonstrate the power of Jerusalem’s rulers to those who entered its gates.”Israel Antiquities Authority Director Eli Escusido said in a press release, "The excavations in the City of David never cease to amaze; once again, discoveries are being revealed that shed new and vivid light on the biblical literature. When you stand at the bottom of this giant excavation, surrounded by enormous hewn walls, it is impossible not to be filled with wonder and appreciation for those ancient people who, about 3,800 years ago, literally moved mountains and hills."Like Blaze News? RFK Jr. DESTROYS Kamala’s record with receipts

RFK Jr. may have run for the Democratic nomination, but upon realizing what his party had become, he switched to independent. Now he’s taking on Vice President Kamala Harris, who is currently expected to run in Biden’s place after he stepped down this Sunday. “A little over a year ago when I entered this race, I predicted that President Biden suffered from a degenerative condition that was not going to improve and that it would make it impossible for him to govern effectively,” RFK Jr. said, addressing the events that transpired over the weekend. “The reaction of the DNC to that obvious condition was to hide it from the American public and to use their power over the Democratic Party nomination process to make sure that nobody could compete with President Biden in a way that would expose his deficiencies,” he continued. “I think you know Kamala Harris is the party of war. She’s a war hawk,” he charged. “Kamala Harris is a war hawk on Ukraine, she’s a war hawk on China. I think that we should be figuring out how to coexist with the rest of the world as best we can.” But it’s not just her war record that troubles RFK Jr. “She’s not going to do anything about the national deficit. I’ve never heard her speak about the chronic disease epidemic,” he said. “I think she’s a product of the corporate control of our democracy.” “In terms of civil rights,” he added, “she has one of the worst civil rights records of any public official.” Despite disagreeing with RFK Jr. on some issues, Dave Rubin of “The Rubin Report” thinks he would have made a much better Democrat candidate than Kamala. “Just imagine if the Democrat Party had gone in that direction instead of the direction that they are in right now,” Rubin says. “If you are a good, decent Democrat, and you are out there, and you just have Trump Derangement Syndrome so you can’t do it — well there’s your guy to vote for.” “I think he will absolutely take more from Kamala or who whoever else the Democrat is,” he adds. 'He couldn't walk off the stage': Aaron Rodgers mocks Biden for challenging Trump to carry his own golf clubs

Super Bowl-winning quarterback Aaron Rodgers mocked President Biden for issuing a challenge to Donald Trump to carry his own golf bag if they were to play against each other. The commentary stemmed from the presidential debate in June, when the two presidents argued over their golf handicaps."I'm in very good health. I just won two club championships, not even senior, two regular club championships," Trump bragged. The current president then said his golf game has come a long way, too."I'd be happy to have a driving contest with him. I got my handicap when I was vice president down to a six. By the way, I told you before I'm happy to play golf with if you carry your own bag," Biden replied."The biggest lie — that he's a six handicap — of all," Trump added.'Nothing really ever changes. All they do is just talk about what they're going to do and then nothing.'The New York Jets star was taking in some golf in Lake Tahoe when he brought up the debate with podcasters Eric Sollenberger and Dan Katz."Did you enjoy the debate? Did you watch?" Rodgers asked the hosts. "Loved the debate," Sollenberger replied. "I watched that; made me fall in love with America. I was, like, we got the two best guys for the job, I'm happy about that."Rodgers then brought up the presidential golfing conversation."When they started talking about golf, Trump just actually said recently a million dollars [bet]; he would give Joe 10 strokes a side.""My favorite part about it that kind of got under the radar was that Biden's like, get, was 'you got to carry your own bag.' This is a guy who couldn't walk off the stage," he exclaimed.Since the debate, Biden has dropped out of the race, while Trump has taken to the links with PGA Tour star Bryson DeChambeau. — (@) "I say get them in singlets, let them wrestle it out," Rodgers joked on "Pardon My Take."The conversation then free-flowed about golf before eventually transitioning into Rodgers commenting on the back-and-forth support he's received from political parties."I saw your tee shot. It wasn't that great," Sollenberger said."Ok, which one?" Rodgers asked."The one that went way far off to the right, like your politics," the host laughed. Rodgers took the chance to recall his previous political golfing controversies:"I love when people try and cancel me. When I play golf with Obama, I was, like, a leftist, and the right try to cancel me. ... Then I was on Team Kennedy, so everybody tried to cancel me politically. Then I didn't shake Trump's hand so the right tried to get after me again, then they realized I actually had shaken his hand, and they reverse course."Rodgers went on to cite Bernie Sanders in 2016 and the John Podesta emails as times when the populous was able to see into the window of the political parties' true intentions."I think politics, I've said from the beginning, is an absolute sham," he explained. "Nothing really ever changes. All they do is just talk about what they're going to do and then nothing. Life doesn't actually get better for any of us, whether it's a Republican or Democrat, and we're still just doing the same f***ing two-party system and not letting Bobby [Kennedy] get in or anybody else."The group went on to discuss term limits, age limits, and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi's stock portfolio."She's a hell of a stock trader," Rodgers said.Like Blaze News?
