A man is in the ER with a serious heart issue, requiring immediate treatment. He sees a woman dressed in street clothes, who walks up to him and tells him that he'll be OK.I received the following account:"My husband had a history of his heart rate dropping into the low 40s. This morning it started happening again and he collapsed, falling 3 feet off some steps. Once he got up he woke me and said I needed to call 911. He said something was different this time. By the time the paramedics got him to the hospital his heart rate was down to 20. He was surrounded by a team of nurses and doctors trying everything to bring his heart rate up. This was when things got weird.They started to shock his heart, to get it into a normal rhythm. Each shock he said was extremely painful. During these shocks, my husband looks up at the room full of doctors and nurses and sees an older lady. She is in normal clothing, with no badge on, and approaching him. This is happening during all the chaos of multiple medical staff trying to save his life. The older woman reaches him, grabs his hand, and whispers in his ear. She tells him not to worry everything will be OK. As she was speaking to him an incredible warmth filled his body and any fear he had went away and he felt calm. The woman then walks away. The shocks stop and the doctors determine he needs an emergency pacemaker installed. He has the surgery within an hour and the surgery goes well. Then things get weirder.In the ICU recovering he shares the story with me about the lady in the ER. While sharing this story with me, he is very emotional and crying. I asked the nurse if there would have been anyone in the ER that would have approached him like the old lady in street clothes did and she said no way. OK, this is definitely getting weirder. For context, my husband is 43 years old, and pretty much an atheist who really doesn’t believe in ghosts or angels.After a few days, he is released from hospital. He goes home and I post this amazing story on Facebook. A couple days pass and our take on reality is shaken to our core.I am sleeping on his third day home when I hear him screaming and crying, "Oh my god, it’s her! It’s her, OMG!" I run to the room he is in and he is bawling. I ask what’s wrong and he shows me a picture on his phone. It’s an obituary, featuring a picture of an old lady. It’s her, he cries. The obituary was texted to him by a close friend of ours. She had seen my post about his ER experience. She had decided to do a search for deaths in the hospital the morning my husband was in the ER. In doing so she came across an obituary. The lady I was looking at, had died around the same time he was in the ER, in the same hospital." Two northern New Jersey boys are riding their bikes at night when they both observe a pale crawler humanoid walking upright from a swamp and onto the road.I received the following account:“I swear to god this is a real story. I still get the chills re-telling it. This was 20 years ago (2004) in Sussex County in northern New Jersey. A friend and I were riding our bikes from his house to mine. It was probably 9:30-10 pm in the summer so it was pitch black when we were coming down the road. He only lived four houses down from me so it was only about 1500 feet from his house to mine. In front of my house is a “swamp” as to the legal deed of my parent's house, and across the road on the other side is a “swamp” as well.We were approximately 200 feet from my driveway (right before the swamp began) and this “thing” came out of the swamp about 50-70 feet in front of us. It was tall, say 6 feet at least, with long lanky legs, and long arms that looked like they could almost touch the ground. I don’t know if it had hair or fur, I wasn’t close enough to it, and the road was basically pitch black except for the light from neighboring houses. I was light in color, maybe white or just pale. It walked on its back legs, and kind of lumbered out of the swamp like it kinda used its front legs sometimes to help run, but definitely a rear, two-legged something.Anyway, this thing comes out of the swamp and goes to the middle of the street, turns to us, and makes this weird bloodcurdling scream/growl/hissing. It was a sound I wish I had on tape because I cannot duplicate it. After it makes this noise it runs across the street into the other swamp/woods. Well, my friend and I almost crapped our pants where we stood, U-turned our bikes, and high-tailed it the hell out of there. We took a few minutes to re-coup our thoughts and analyze WTF just happened. After a few minutes, we agreed that we both saw the same exact thing but had no idea what just happened. After regaining our courage we bolted back down the road to my house.Since that day I have never seen or heard that thing again (And for the record we were both 100% sober, too young to be doing drugs or alcohol). We have deer, coyotes, black bears but I’ve seen them all and this was nothing of that sort. The swampy area is probably only a foot or so deep. I told my parents but they just said, “Oh, that’s weird” and kinda brushed it off. We didn’t go look for prints. We were young and scared. Definitely would have gone back if it happened to me now. It was walking on 2 (legs), but its front appendages were very long like it “could” use them to run if it needed to. The annual American holiday called Thanksgiving formally began with a 1863 proclamation from Abraham Lincoln declaring the last Thursday in November a day of “thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens,” as well as “humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience.” The thought behind Thanksgiving is outward toward God and his blessings and not inward, which suggests gratitude to no one in particular for whatever positives might have occurred in one’s life. In the more secular view these positives are not blessings, but are to be chalked up to luck, or “good fortune.” May “The Force” be with you. Most presidents after Lincoln generally followed the pattern of giving thanks to the Deity, even and especially during wars and economic downturns. In 1939, in the midst of The Great Depression and a looming World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt was still able to proclaim: “Let us, on the day set aside for this purpose, give thanks to the Ruler of the Universe for the strength which He has vouchsafed us to carry on our daily labors and for the hope that lives within us of the coming of a day when peace and the productive activities of peace shall reign on every continent.” That optimistic sentiment was reinforced in the Vera Lynn song “The White Cliffs of Dover,” which contained this lyric: “There’ll be love and laughter And peace ever after Tomorrow When the world is free” If only. Roosevelt also declared Thanksgiving to be on the fourth Thursday of the month in years when the calendar contained five Thursdays to allow more time for Christmas shopping which he thought would help boost the economy. Even in this month when Thanksgiving comes naturally late on the calendar, advertisers have been declaring “Black Friday” sales beginning in October. As noted by The American Presidency Project, beginning in the early 1940s, “the language of Thanksgiving Day Proclamations changed to emphasize American values and ideas, and to assert the event’s direct link to the ‘first Thanksgiving’ of Plymouth Colony.” Many myths have grown around Thanksgiving, The Mayflower, and other historical events. The Museum Gallery Archive reports: “Four hundred years ago, Thanksgiving was a religious event, and marked by fasting not feasting. Recent research suggests that the first Thanksgiving of this kind was celebrated by new English settlers at Berkeley, Virginia, in 1619. They were Puritans giving thanks for their safe arrival on the banks of the James River.” Today, Thanksgiving is nearly a blur in the rush toward Christmas and the conspicuous consumption merchants promote to pad their bottom lines. It’s too bad because pausing to reflect amid the toxic political environment we have experienced this year - and are likely to continue to experience in at least the near future - is a way to cleanse us from the poison that has infected so many. It is also a way to turn our attention from things on Earth that must pass away to the One who is eternal and in control of all things. After one of the most divisive presidential campaigns in modern history, dividing friends, family members and even members of some churches, this Thanksgiving offers an opportunity to put bitterness aside, attempt to heal wounds, and focus on what unites us more than our political divisions. Let that process begin with humility, forgiveness and confession to the One who ought to be the object of our gratitude.
