The walk-back we are seeing from the Biden White House after the attempted assassination of former President Trump is an acknowledgment that we need to cool the rhetoric, to calm it down. Politics is enmeshed in all of this because President Biden is running a really rough reelection campaign against former President Trump, by polling data. Trump is leading him by about three points nationally. If Trump were to win the popular vote by three points, he would have a 100% chance of winning the Electoral College, according to poll analyst Nate Silver. Biden issued a blasé statement saying an investigation was underway. He stated: Last night, I spoke with Donald Trump. I’m sincerely grateful that he’s doing well and recovering. And we had a short but good conversation. Jill and I are keeping him and his family in our prayers. … as this investigation continues, here’s what we’re going to do. First, Mr. Trump, as a former president and nominee of the Republican Party already receives a heightened level of security, and I have been consistent in my direction to the Secret Service to provide him with every resource, capability, and protective measure necessary to ensure his continued safety. Second, I’ve directed the head of the Secret Service to review all security measures for the — all security measures for the Republican National Convention, which is scheduled to start tomorrow. And third, I’ve directed an independent review of the national security at yesterday’s rally to assess exactly what happened. And we’ll share the results of that independent review with the American people as well. So that was Biden’s rather blasé statement yesterday. Because of this horrifying circumstance, he was able to shift the narrative away from himself, as his mental capacity has been the center of the news lately. Until the assassination attempt, the news cycle was all about the fact that Biden might be ousted by his own party because he was trailing in the polls and clearly declining every single day. But it also puts Biden on the defensive because the reality is that people have been heating up the rhetoric to the point where there was an assassination attempt against Donald Trump. That has been going on for nearly 10 years; it was Joe Biden who, all the way back in 2011, suggested that members of the Tea Party were akin to terrorists. It was Joe Biden who said Mitt Romney wanted to put black people back in chains. It was Joe Biden who spent large swathes of his career engaging in the most extraordinarily radical type of rhetoric with regard to his political opponents, full-scale demonization. And now Joe Biden has to try and walk that back. He has thus far refused to dissociate from his central campaign message, which is that his opponent is a fascist who is going to destroy the country wholesale and turn himself into a Hitlerian dictator. Biden’s entire campaign has been about how his political opponents are going to end democracy and institute a fascist dictatorship, that if he does not win reelection, his political opponent is so evil there will likely never be another election and democracy will be fatally undermined. So when Biden says we all need to take down the rhetoric, is he willing to say “including me”? Biden’s people recently tweeted that Trump would come into office and institute “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Joe Biden’s X account declared that Donald Trump would be a full-scale dictator. If Biden is willing to dissociate from the central message of his campaign, I will take his talk more seriously about lowering the political temperature. Biden’s entire campaign has been about how his political opponent is orange Hitler. The problem is when Biden states that the political temperature must come down, it rings hollow.

The FBI announced that it had gained access to the phone of the 20-year-old man who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump on Saturday.  According to an update posted Monday afternoon, the FBI said that it was now going through the phone of Thomas Matthew Crook, who shot Trump while he spoke at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday. Trump and two other rally attendees were injured while one man, 50-year-old Corey Comperatore was killed.  “FBI technical specialists successfully gained access to Thomas Matthew Crooks’ phone, and they continue to analyze his electronic devices,” The FBI said. “The search of the subject’s residence and vehicle are complete.” The Daily Wire previously reported that law enforcement ransacked the home of Crooks late Saturday night, just hours after the assassination attempt took place.  The bureau added that it had interviewed almost 100 law enforcement personnel, event attendees, and other witnesses and was continuing to conduct interviews. “The FBI has received hundreds of digital media tips which include photos and videos taken at the scene, and we continue to review incoming tips,” the bureau said. “While the investigative work continues, FBI victim services personnel have offered assistance to the victims of Saturday’s incident.”  Some Republicans have voiced skepticism about the FBI being put in charge of the investigation into the shooting, pointing to instances of political bias at the bureau.  “My constituents are deeply concerned with the FBI conducting the sole investigation into the attempted assassination of President Trump,” Rep. Lance Gooden (R-TX) said on Monday. “They don’t have faith in the current FBI leadership to get to the truth given how they have targeted President Trump with political witch hunt after witch hunt at the behest of Joe Biden.” The FBI has also faced criticism over its handling of other high profile investigations, including the shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville. The FBI has pushed to suppress the writings of the transgender-identifying woman who killed six people, including three children, at the Christian school last year.  Other Republican lawmakers have called for investigations into the Secret Service’s handling of security for the rally, questioning how the shooter was able to gain access to a roof so close to where Trump was speaking. They have demanded that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas turn over documents explaining what security measures were taken in the lead up to Saturday’s rally. 

Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) is a “very confident pick” by former President Donald Trump to be his vice president, Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro said Monday. Trump announced that he had selected Vance as his running mate Monday afternoon in a post on Truth Social. “After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump wrote. Shapiro offered his thoughts on the pick during a breaking news livestream just after the announcement. As a friend put it, Vance is truly a "f*** it, we ride!" pick from Trump. Demonstrates real confidence — and shows that he wants a bulldog. Vance is certainly that. Shapiro also said Vance is an “excellent articulator of the Trump vision” and is “very aggressive,” which is “probably why Trump picked him.” The Ohio senator is an “absolute bulldog” in television appearances and a debate between him and Vice President Kamala Harris should be a “bloodbath” in favor of Vance, Shapiro said. Trump was also looking for someone with “an extremely high IQ,” Shapiro said. Vance graduated from Yale Law School and worked in the tech industry as a venture capitalist. Vance is also “ideologically flexible,” Shapiro said, adding that this is an “asset not a detriment.” “The thing about Vance, I think, that you can suspect is that he’s going to staple himself to Trump’s positions,” Shapiro said. “Donald Trump’s a pragmatist, will do what he feels like he has to do in order to get where he needs to go, and JD Vance is actually much more like that than any of the other candidates who were up for the position,” Shapiro said. Shapiro recalled that JD Vance is on the record speaking out against Trump back in 2016 but later changed his mind to become an “extremely significant backer” of Trump. On a strategic level, Shapiro said he believes Trump likely already has more appeal in the Rust Belt, “blue wall” states than Vance does, but Trump is “doubling down on that.” “He figures that rather than try to appeal to, say, Hispanics with Marco Rubio, he’s probably figuring, there aren’t that many Hispanic voters in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin,” Shapiro said. “What he’s figuring is that Vance is going to help him sew up those Rust Belt states.” “He is focusing in on the white, working class voter, whom he believes JD Vance represents,” Shapiro added. “From a strategic point of view, I think that [Virginia Governor] Glenn Youngkin would have been a smarter pick than JD Vance,” Shapiro said. “From a purely Donald Trump doesn’t give an ‘F’ and he is ready and raring to go, and he is going to secure his legacy by putting in place a very young, very charismatic vice president who is super capable, then Vance does that.” “Senator Vance is a fascinating character. You’re going to learn a lot more about him,” Shapiro said. Vance was elected to the Senate in 2022. After Trump’s announcement, Vance was seen shaking hands on the floor of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

They lied about Russia, Russia collusion, they said he was a traitor, they went after him in every which way possible,” Trump Jr. began, making it clear that he was having none of Soboroff’s framing. “If the media actually starts being an honest broker, talking about the things that he did, the prosperity he brought, the peace deals that he signed around the world rather than the disaster we’re living right now, I think you’d do everyone in the country a big favor.” Soboroff tried a different tack, asking Trump Jr. about illegal immigration and asking whether a second Trump term would include policies that separated children from their parents at the border. “Will we continue to see policies like separating 5000 children deliberately from their parents?” Soboroff asked. “You mean like the Obama administration?” Trump Jr. shot back, referencing former President Obama’s own troubles at the southern border. “You know they didn’t do that, sir,” Soboroff protested, earning an eyeball from Trump Jr.: “Sure.” Soboroff tried once more to pin “family separation policy” to a second Trump administration, prompting another quick response from the former president’s son. “It’s MSNDNC so I expect nothing less from you clowns even today,” Trump Jr. said, referencing the attempted assassination of his father just two days earlier and adding, “Even 48 hours later, you couldn’t wait, you couldn’t wait with your lies and with your nonsense, so just get out of here.”
