Donald Trump Gave Us a Moment of History

Donald Trump is a man spiritually from the Gilded Age. From his taste in gold leaf and massive buildings, to his outrightly abrasive no-nonsense persona, to his interest in tariffs, to his domestic social liberalism and hedonism, to his Fortress America ideas pertaining to trade and immigration, he is a man from an earlier century. He is, in a strangely anachronistic way, reminiscent of the men who built the greatest industrial superpower in the cusp of the late nineteenth century. The cognoscenti fail to understand his appeal to the masses for the simple reason: they don’t understand what an elite from an earlier era would have been like in our unmanly age of interconnectedness and internationalism. It is no coincidence that Great Man Theory was the most prevalent causal theory of history in the late 19th century—the quote “history is the biography of great men” etched in one of the Library of Congress windows—a theory that slowly lost its importance in the academy to the rise of amorphous, unaccountable structuralism, and to wars, and time.  Blond wispy hair, an ear dripping red, a white shirt, and a navy blue jacket—Trump had better reflexes than most men of advanced age, and gave us a moment for history. He got up, and barked at the secret service with a hoary voice of a momentarily shaken man, “Let me get my shoes.” And then there was that instinct: “Wait, wait, wait,” he said, and then, despite the hapless servicemen around him trying to protect his head from the line of sight of a potential second sniper, he raised a fist and shouted three times, “Fight.”  There was no Teddy Rooseveltian speech (“it takes more than that to kill a bull moose”). The forces and protocols of our time do not allow that. But the image was every bit Rooseveltian in every pixel showing every drop of Trump’s blood.  True leaders are often products of circumstances. Fortitude does not reside in every leader of men. “The freaks of chance are not determinable by calculation,” as Thucydides wrote. Donald Trump, whatever fate bestows upon him in November, marked himself as a proverbial “great man of history” in the images that will live for posterity and will guide this country to whatever destiny is in front of it in the coming centuries.  The post Donald Trump Gave Us a Moment of History appeared first on The American Conservative.

Ackman Joins Musk in Endorsing Trump After Assassination Attempt

Immediately after the Saturday assassination attempt on Donald Trump, the billionaire Bill Ackman followed another pro-Trump magnate, Elon Musk, in endorsing the former president’s current run. Less than an hour after the shooting, Musk took to his X platform to post a video of Trump pumping his fist in defiance after the assassination attempt, along with a brief message endorsing Trump and wishing him a rapid recovery. On Friday, Musk had donated a “sizable” amount to a Trump-aligned PAC, but had not formally endorsed the former President. I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery pic.twitter.com/ZdxkF63EqF— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 13, 2024 In a lengthy X post, Ackman stated that he had declined to endorse Trump as it might cause Biden supporters to ignore what he had to say, and that he made the decision to endorse Trump “carefully, rationally, and by relying on as much empirical data as possible.”  These endorsements by two prominent billionaires come at a time when numerous Democratic donors have grown hesitant towards donating to Biden after a poor June 27 debate performance. Currently, donors are withholding $90 million from Biden’s Future Forward PAC, a number which includes multiple individual commitments upwards of $10 million.  As The American Conservative reported in late June, Trump and the RNC went from a $100 million cash disadvantage in March to a slight advantage in the aftermath of the former President’s May 30 conviction. The two bands from the 90s and 00s that Mick Jagger said he liked

The two bands from the 90s and 00s that Mick Jagger said he liked

Born in Dartford, England back in 1943, Mick Jagger is certainly one of the most influential songwriters, frontmans and singers of all time. Alongside the guitarist Keith Richards he wrote most of the songs The Rolling Stones released over the decades and he has been fronting the group for more than six decades already. So he had the chance to see the evolution of Rock and Roll up-close and watch many interesting new bands over the years. In an interview with BBC back in 2007, he named two bands, one from the 90s and another from the 2000s that he liked. He mentioned them after being asked by a fan if there were any modern bands he believed would maintain a long career like The Rolling Stones. The two bands from the 90s and 00s that Mick Jagger said he liked Green Day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUTGr5t3MoY&pp=ygUJZ3JlZW4gZGF5 The first band mentioned by Jagger was the American Punk group Green Day. They were formed in Rodeo, California in 1987 and released their debut album in 1990. "I don’t know if any of those bands are really going to last forever. Because I don’t know if they really want to. They might just want to be musicians in another form. Not everyone wants to stay together as a band," Mick Jagger said in the interview with BBC. Formed by Billie Joe Armstrong (Guitar and vocals), Mike Dirnt (Bass) and Tré Cool (Drums), they are already one of the best selling bands of all time. The group sold an estimated amount of more than 75 million records worldwide. Some of their most famous albums are "Dookie" (1994), "Warning" (2000) and "American Idiot" (2004). They are one of the most influential bands of their generation and are considered one of the godfathers of Pop Punk Kings of Leon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLaJkbkG5NI The second band mentioned by Mick Jagger was Kings of Leon which still wasn't a band famous worldwide back in 2007 like nowadays. They were formed in Mount Juliet, Tennessee back in 1999 and released their debut album "Youth & Young Manhood" in 2003. In an interview with Absolute Radio back in 2010, Mick Jagger talked about the group. He complained that they didn't connect with the audience in the early days. “The Kings Of Leon at the beginning, they didn't really do that successfully. But everyone has to do it in the end. Because otherwise it becomes kind of embarrassing, being in a room when you're not really connecting. But now they play arenas and they're really good and they're much more forthcoming. They still have their shy moments, but they seem to have cut down," Mick Jagger said. Jagger had the chance to see them playing live back then. The members of the group already said it was a surreal moment when they looked at the balcony of the venue and they saw Jagger enjoying their show. The lead singer Caleb Followill recalled that moment in an interview with BBC back in 2021. “It was very distracting because we were playing the show and there were a few empty seats up top. Then before you know it, it’s Mick sitting there and banging his arms on the balcony and dancing." We were all looking at each other like, ‘Holy crap. This is very surreal.' I started shaking my hips a little more. Yep, I definitely did some dancing that I hadn’t done before,” Caleb Followill said. The post The two bands from the 90s and 00s that Mick Jagger said he liked appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.
