Mutant Blue-Skinned Frog Spotted In "Once-In-A-Lifetime" Encounter

The aptly named magnificent tree frog is typically green with a yellow belly, so you can imagine the surprise when scientists stumbled across a member of the species with blue skin. The shocking blue frog is an incredibly rare discovery, most likely caused by a rare genetic mutation that affects the production of yellow pigments. It was recently photographed by a team from the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) while exploring the Charnley River-Artesian Range Wildlife Sanctuary along the Kimberley coast of north-western Australia.“It was after dark when we first spotted it, perched on a bench in the workshop near our research centre. It was very exciting. Magnificent tree frogs are already spectacular, but to see a blue one is a once-in-a-lifetime chance,” Jake Barker, AWC field ecologist, said in a statement. The magnificent tree frog (Litoria splendida) is found only in a patch of Australia in the northern Kimberley region and neighboring parts of the Northern Territory. Typically growing to around 12 centimeters (5 inches) in length, their green coloration acts as a camouflage in the leafy environment they inhabit. Another magnificent tree frog (Litoria splendida) with more typical green pigmentation.Image credit: J. Barker / AWC“This is one of a number of north-west endemics that we come across pretty regularly around here. They’re not found anywhere else. That’s the great thing about working in the Kimberley – you never know what rare wildlife you’re going to see each day,” noted Barker.Green coloration in animals like amphibians, reptiles, and birds is typically created by a combination of blue and yellow pigments. There is, however, a well-known mutation called axanthism that interferes with the biochemical pathways that synthesize and deposit yellow pigments, causing the animal to appear blue.Axanthism has been reported in a handful of different animals, but this is the first time it’s been documented in a magnificent tree frog.“Very occasionally, a green frog is missing yellow pigment in its skin, and it results in an entirely or mostly blue frog. I’ve seen tens of thousands of frogs over the years, and only seen one blue frog – and it was nowhere near as spectacular as this Magnificent Tree Frog. A rare encounter and one that highlights the spectacular diversity of Australia’s frogs,” explained Dr Jodi Rowley, Curator of Amphibian & Reptile Conservation Biology at the Australian Museum. Without its green stealthy camouflage, the unique frog is likely to be at a higher risk of being spotted by predators. Fortunately, the species has another trick to stop it from becoming another animal’s dinner. Its head is topped with a large parotoid gland that’s loaded with bitter-tasting liquid. The mild poison isn’t toxic to humans, but it's potent enough to dissuade large predators from eating them.

5,000 Years Ago, Plague Probably Brought Down Europe’s First Farmers

The Bubonic plague that killed a third of the population of Europe and parts of Asia in the 14th century stands as possibly the most devastating disease epidemic in world history. But it seems there had been a warning of what the bacterium could do thousands of years before, when it was a contributor to – and perhaps the cause of – the “Neolithic decline” when Scandinavian populations fell drastically.Farming originated in warm river valleys but spread during the Neolithic, the time between agriculture's beginning and the development of metallurgy. Unfortunately, by putting more people close together than could survive in hunter-gatherer populations, the agricultural revolution made it much easier for infectious diseases to spread. The presence of the plague-causing bacterium Yersinia pestis in Scandinavia 5,000 years ago was proven in 2019, but debate has continued as to how much of a problem it was. Not all varieties of a virus or bacterium are equally infectious or lethal. Dr Frederik Seersholm of the University of Copenhagen and colleagues sought to see how widespread plague was among Neolithic farmers 5,300-4,900 years ago by testing teeth and bones from 107 individuals from Sweden and one from Denmark."The analyses show that 18 of these individuals, 17 percent, were infected with the plague when they died. Furthermore, our results suggests that the youngest plague strain we identify might have had epidemic potential," Seersholm said in a statement. This made Y. pestis the most common pathogen, including less virulent ones, the scientists found. Just because people were infected with the plague when they died doesn’t mean it was the cause of death – the bacterium can be carried for quite a while until dying of other causes. Nevertheless, the potential is there. If 17 percent of those dying in a particular year were victims of plague that would still make it only a modest contributor to any population crash, but the bodies sampled were much more spread out in time. Most came from happier times before the plague arrived, or between waves.Considering that the population of Scandinavia and Northwestern Europe fell so dramatically that agriculture stopped in many areas within a few centuries, something big must have taken place. The building of great megaliths stopped at the same time. In the absence of evidence of major climate change, disease is the leading suspect."We cannot – yet – prove that this was exactly how it happened. But the fact that we can now show that it could have happened this way is significant. The cause of this population decline, which we have known about for a long time, has always been subject of debate," Seersholm said.Besides revealing the plague’s presence, Seersholm and colleagues tested its DNA and that of the people buried at these sites. "We have been able to carry out a comprehensive mapping of plague lineages, and a detailed description of other microbes in the DNA data. At the same time, through these analyses, we have been able to look at the human DNA from a broad perspective to a local one – and right down to the individual level, getting a picture of the social organization that existed back then," Dr Martin Sikora said. This allowed the team to rule out the possibility of a single devastating wave. One family was traced over six generations, which suffered at least three outbreaks in that time, from distinctly different plague strains. This pattern is familiar; the Black Death of 1347-53 was followed by periodic resurgences until the 17th century.We don’t know how the disease spread, but it was not through fleas like in the Middle Ages. All strains lacked the mutation that allows Y. pestis to survive in the insect’s digestive tract, unlike the species from which it evolved. The family relationships revealed in the human DNA indicate a culture where women were buried (and presumably lived) with the families of their husbands. Some of those buried at these sites have recent ancestry from the Eurasian steppe, mixed with local DNA.Of course, northern Europe did not remain depopulated for long. A culture called the Corded Ware complex expanded into the area starting from 4,800 years ago. Whether they carried an immunity to this strain of Y. pestis, or if the bacterium became less deadly for a while, is not known. The study is published open access in the journal Nature.

Bizarre Event in Peterborough: Video Shows Man with Third Leg

A strange event recently unfolded in Peterborough, Canada. A video (see below) posted on social media shows a man who appears to have a third leg, and it’s quickly gone viral. The footage was recorded by a woman waiting at a railway crossing. Clearly astounded by what she was witnessing, she repeatedly exclaimed, “What the hell am I looking at?” Her disbelief is palpable, as the video shows a man nearby who seems to possess an extra limb, complete with its own shoe and trouser leg. Experts are divided on the cause of this perplexing sight. Some suggest it could be an optical illusion, possibly a result of the camera angle, lighting, and the man’s positioning. Others, however, have not dismissed the possibility of a unique medical condition or even surgical enhancement. The man’s identity remains unknown, and the true nature of his “extra” limb is still a mystery. It’s possible that this is just a good joke. Growing Number of Biden Media Allies Turning On Him — MRCTV’S Stephanie Hamill Reacts On Fox

MRC contributing writer Stephanie Hamill was a guest on Wednesday’s Fox News at Night with host Trace Gallagher to react to the shift in tone in media coverage of President Joe Biden.  Many "journalists" and media outlets who shielded Biden from bad news coverage over the years are now singing a new and negative tune when it comes to Biden's re-election bid, as many are urging him to step aside, including The New York Times which published a blistering op-ed penned by actor George Clooney asking Biden to not seek re-election.  Keep in mind that Clooney recently co-hosted a major fundraiser for Biden, which reportedly raised $28 million for his campaign.

PBS Avoids Networks' Pro-Biden Optimism as Democrats Agonize Over His Reelection

On Tuesday’s edition of the PBS News Hour, White House reporter Lisa Desjardins sounded unconvinced that President Biden had settled the waters among his Democratic caucus after his awful debate performance, pessimism that stood in contrast to the national news networks, whose White House reporters have hastily leapt back on board the Biden train after a day or so of relative calm on the Democratic front, with calls for Biden to drop out of the race slowing to a trickle. Co-anchor Amna Nawaz: House Democrats met behind closed doors today as the party weighs whether to support President Joe Biden's reelection bid or call for him to step aside. Co-anchor Geoff Bennett: Our Lisa Desjardins has more on the party's internal struggle. PBS congressional reporter Desjardins’ comments were interspersed with soundbites from Democratic senators and representatives, who were running a gauntlet of reporters outside the Democratic National Committee, either voicing terse opinions or no comments to shouted questions regarding their support for Biden. Desjardins: Outside the Democratic National Committee, the pressure was visible, but barely voiced. A few House members were Biden-forward….A few signaled acceptance….One openly said Biden must step aside. [That was Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL).]….But many, many… avoided saying anything about it at all. As a herd of reporters waited and sweated outside, the political heat was inside. Members spent nearly two hours on the future of the presidential ticket, including whether Biden's debate performance means he cannot win. PBS News Hour was told that a group of members said they think Vice President Harris may have a better chance. After saying “At best, many are accepting, rather than cheering, for Biden,” she ran an unenthusiastic soundbite from Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA): “Until the president says otherwise, the assumption is he's the nominee….” After supportive Biden quotes from Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), Desjardins continued: “But for most Democrats, far less resolve, or even clarity, on the next step.” Then she joined anchor Nawaz, remotely from Capitol Hill, who asked her, “we saw what lawmakers are willing to say on camera there. What are your sources telling you off camera?” Desjardins seemed to hint that the threat to Biden’s nomination had yet to pass, no matter the current quelling of public rebellion and the happy talk on the major networks. Desjardins: Democrats are in a stutter-step moment. Now, for the last day, it has been clear that President Biden has gained some momentum here at the Capitol, as there have been fewer and fewer voices coming out publicly against him, not zero, but fewer. And behind the scenes, more and more Democrats have said they feel leery of coming out against him. This is in part due to the Congressional Black Caucus and also leaders of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus last night backing him up, saying he has to remain as the nominee. But I will say, it's interesting. The few people that I --were able to speak publicly,  did say some interesting things on the record. Senator Dick Durbin, of the -- who is the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, told me off camera -- I asked him, should Biden step aside? He said, "That remains to be seen." This was just a couple of hours ago…. When Nawaz asked what might happen next, Desjardins didn’t sound like a Biden cheerleader, dropping another bit of bad news for the Biden campaign. Desjardins: ….to be honest, there really is no clear way to make this decision for Democrats. They are watching every single tick on the campaign trail, everything the president and his campaign does. They are also watching other pieces of news, like, for instance, this one that happened just in the last few hours. The Cook Political Report with our own Amy Walter, friend of the News Hour, of course, came out and said, because of the environment now, they are predicting that more states are leaning Republican, moving more towards Trump. That includes three battleground states that were toss-ups that they now say will be lean Republican, Arizona, Georgia and Nevada. That is something Democrats I talked to just now really are hearing and listening and worried about in terms of how they see President Biden. A transcript is available, click “Expand.” PBS News Hour 7/9/24 6:53 p.m. (ET) Amna Nawaz: Now to our other major story. House Democrats met behind closed doors today as the party weighs whether to support President Joe Biden's reelection bid or call for him to step aside. Geoff Bennett: Our Lisa Desjardins has more on the party's internal struggle. Lisa Desjardins: Outside the Democratic National Committee, the pressure was visible, but barely voiced. A few House members were Biden-forward. Man: Joe Biden all the way. Lisa Desjardins: A few signaled acceptance. Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA): Joe Biden is the nominee. Lisa Desjardins: One openly said Biden must step aside. Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL): He just has to step down because he can't win. Lisa Desjardins: But many, many… Question: Congressman, is President Biden the right man for the job? Question: Should the president step aside? Lisa Desjardins: … avoided saying anything about it at all. Man: Go, Celtics. Lisa Desjardins: As a herd of reporters waited and sweated outside, the political heat was inside. Members spent nearly two hours on the future of the presidential ticket, including whether Biden's debate performance means he cannot win. "PBS NewsHour" was told that a group of members said they think Vice President Harris may have a better chance. Lisa Desjardins: Congressman, what do you think about Vice President Harris? I understand she came up in there. Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-MD): I'm sorry? Lisa Desjardins: Vice President Harris. And there are people that are saying maybe she's a better option. What do you think about that? Rep. Glenn Ivey: Well, there's a lot of positive comments about the vice president. I don't know that I'd say there's a consensus one way or another about all of that. Lisa Desjardins: But as members exited, those behind Biden stayed there. Question: Do you think Biden will win in November? Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC): Absolutely. MAN: Staying with papa. Lisa Desjardins: And those who want someone else still do. Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX): My position has not changed. Lisa Desjardins: But hovering over it, former President Donald Trump and Democratic concern over his agenda and the Project 2025 agenda associated with many close to him. Rep. Ayanna Pressley: I am not distracted by a 90-minute debate. I am focused on guarding against 90 years of harm if Project 2025 becomes a reality. Lisa Desjardins: Also hovering, the fact that Democrats are struggling. House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler reversed his call for Biden to step aside. Question: Do you think he's the best candidate? Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY): Yes, at this point he's the best candidate. He's the only candidate. Lisa Desjardins: At best, many are accepting, rather than cheering for Biden. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA): Until the president says otherwise, the assumption is he's the nominee. The majority of people who I have talked to believe that it's his decision and that he has made it very clear that he's going to be the nominee. And, at this point, we have got to focus on winning. Lisa Desjardins: On the other side of the Capitol, Democratic senators were even more disciplined, with few answering questions, though some Biden loyalists did speak. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY): As I have said before, I'm with Joe. Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA): Joe Biden is a great president, and he's the only guy that kicked Trump's ass in an election. Lisa Desjardins: But for most Democrats, far less resolve, or even clarity, on the next step. How do you make this decision? Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA): This decision has not been made yet. I don't know how our leadership will handle this, but I do know that we will be making a decision, a collective decision, and then we will move forward. Amna Nawaz: And Lisa joins us live now from Capitol Hill. So, Lisa, we saw what lawmakers are willing to say on camera there. What are your sources telling you off camera? Lisa Desjardins: Democrats are in a stutter step moment. The few people that I — were able to speak publicly did say some interesting things on the record. Senator Dick Durbin, of the — who is the number two Democrat in the Senate, told me off camera — I asked him, should Biden step aside? He said "That remains to be seen." This was just a couple of hours ago. He said: "Biden is putting together a campaign that will demonstrate whether he is ready to beat Donald Trump." We need to see what that campaign is. Clearly, the president is trying to get out more, but he is also trying to contact more people in the Democratic Party. Laura Barron-Lopez reports that he will be meeting virtually with Democratic mayors tonight and will take their questions. But even as the Biden campaign tells me they feel things are swinging in their direction, there are others who are going the other way, like Mikie Sherrill, a representative from New Jersey, a key moderate, someone who has potentially greater ambitions ahead, is someone who came out with a statement today saying that she thinks Biden should step aside. Amna Nawaz: Lisa, for those Democrats who are now calling for President Biden to step aside, what's their plan B? What do they want to see happen? Lisa Desjardins: There is, in fact, a plan B developing, but nearly every Democrat will say it is up to Joe Biden to step aside. They do not believe, they do not see a way to force him out. But that plan B developing is Vice President Harris. In fact, there are some that are — said openly, I'm told, in today's House meeting that Harris would be better against Donald Trump than Joe Biden. That is a disagreement. Not everyone agrees on that. There are others who go even farther, saying that they would like to see Harris put on a ticket with a Midwestern governor. Some names mentioned there are Michigan's Gretchen Whitmer. Harris herself was on the campaign trail today for Biden, but she spoke a lot about Trump, which is what Democrats want to hear more of. Amna Nawaz: Meanwhile, what's the latest that we're hearing today in response to all this from the White House and from the Biden campaign? Lisa Desjardins: That's right. The White House and Biden campaign are both saying, full steam ahead. They say they are contacting more and more lawmakers, like the mayors that we talked about earlier. The chairwoman of the Progressive Caucus, Pramila Jayapal, says she expects to have a face-to-face meeting with Biden as well. So it's a full-court press, basically. And they do believe that momentum will keep swinging this way. They know that the time is short for Democrats to try and effectively move Biden or pressure him to be out of the nomination. Amna Nawaz: And, Lisa, for the Democrats who continue to stand with President Biden, are they essentially saying, we're not sure he's the best candidate, but he's the candidate we have, so we have to unify behind him? Lisa Desjardins: Almost in those exact words, Amna. It's a strange position Democrats are in here. They are saying, literally, we support our nominee. That's sentence one. And then second sentence will be, right now, that nominee is Joe Biden. What the Biden campaign needs to happen is for Democrats to take out that phrase right now. More and more Democrats on the fence have been communicating with me, lawmakers saying that they think he will be able to survive this. But the Biden campaign says he's not quite there yet. Amna Nawaz: In the less than a minute we have left, the big question is, what happens next? Lisa Desjardins: Right. Well, there will be more meetings here at the Capitol. On Thursday, Senate Democrats meet in their caucus. But to be honest, there really is no clear way to make this decision for Democrats. They are watching every single tick on the campaign trail, everything the president and his campaign does. They are also watching other pieces of news, like, for instance, this one that happened just in the last few hours. The Cook Political Report with our own Amy Walter, friend of the "News Hour," of course, came out and said, because of the environment now, they are predicting that more states are leaning Republican, moving more towards Trump. 15 quotes from George Orwell’s ‘1984’ that are no longer fiction

George Orwell — mastermind of dystopian fiction or enlightened prophet? It seems the latter may be the truer answer. If you haven’t read the classic “1984,” the novel is a cautionary tale that follows a futuristic society dominated by a surveillance state that aims to redefine truth through rigid thought control. Sound familiar? While Orwell’s “1984” is technically categorized as fiction, a recent article from The Federalist by Monroe Harless poses the argument that the book contains a disturbingly high number of “descriptors of reality.” Glenn Beck reads 15 quotes from the "1984," all of which are referenced in Harless’ article, that paint an accurate picture of the current state of America. These 15 Lines From “1984” Are No Longer Fiction youtu.be 1. “The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.” 2. “They add nothing to the wealth of the world, since whatever they produce is used for purposes of war, and the object of waging a war is always to be in a better position in which to wage another war.” 3. “Already we are breaking down the habits of thought which have survived from before the Revolution … children will be taken from their mothers at birth, as one takes eggs from a hen.” 4. “I hate purity, I hate goodness! I don’t want virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone to be corrupt to the bones.” 5. “… one knows the news is all lies anyway.” 6. “The sex impulse was dangerous to the Party, and the Party had turned it to account. They had played a similar trick with the instinct of parenthood. The children, on the other hand, were systematically turned against their parents and taught to spy on them and report their deviations. The family had become in effect an extension of the Thought Police.” 7. “Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end, we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible because there will be no words in which to express it.” 8. “Power is not a means; it is an end … The object of persecution is persecution.” 9. “How does one man assert his power over another, Winston?“ Winston thought. “By making him suffer,” he said. “Exactly. By making him suffer. Obedience is not enough. Unless he is suffering, how can you be sure that he is obeying your will and not his own?" 10. “Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four.” 11. “The Ministry of Peace concerns itself with war, the Ministry of Truth with lies, the Ministry of Love with torture and the Ministry of Plenty with starvation. These contradictions are not accidental, nor do they result from ordinary hypocrisy: they are deliberate exercises in doublethink.” 12. “DOUBLETHINK means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.” 13. “Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered.” 14. “We have cut the links between child and parent, and between man and man, and between man and woman. No one dares trust a wife or a child or a friend any longer. But in the future there will be no wives and no friends.” 15. “The fabulous statistics continued to pour out of the telescreen. As compared with last year there was more food, more clothes, more houses, more furniture, more cooking-pots, more fuel, more ships, more helicopters, more books, more babies — more of everything except disease, crime, and insanity.” All Glenn can say is, “That is where we are, America.” To hear his commentary on the quotes as well as examples of how the U.S. federal government embodies Orwell's “1984,” watch the clip above. 'Miracle' amid tragedy: 1-year-old boy found alive alongside highway after older brother found dead in Beryl's wake

A grandmother in Louisiana is both celebrating and mourning after her 1-year-old grandson was found alive hours after the lifeless body of his 4-year-old brother was pulled from a lake.A tragic stormHurricane Beryl hit landfall early Monday morning, unleashing heavy rain and knocking out electricity for some three million Texans. It also caused similar disturbances in Vinton, Louisiana, a city of some 3,400 residents just east of the Texas border. On Monday afternoon, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office received a report of a body floating in a lake just behind the Vinton Welcome Center. The agency then released a brief description of the deceased on Facebook, calling him only "an African American child."Soon afterward, Conswella Jack of Lake Charles, Louisiana, came forward, fearing that the body might be that of her 4-year-old grandson, Legend. Sadly, she was right.'Looked like it was wrecked': Background of a troubled familyAlready heartbroken, Jack then informed deputies that Legend has a 1-year-old brother, Kingtrail, whom she had not seen since her mother's funeral on Saturday.'We were in the process of moving assets out to Vinton to search the body of water to see if we could locate the 1-year-old.'Jack also shared information about her family that heightened everyone's concerns about little Kingtrail. Jack claimed that her daughter, 25-year-old Aaliyah Jack, is the mother of both boys. Though Aaliyah has legal custody of them, she had recently "fallen on hard times," Jack indicated. So, Conswella Jack decided to care for Kingtrail, the boys' paternal grandmother watched over Legend, and Aaliyah Jack fled to Baton Rouge for reasons unknown. The family was reunited on Saturday at the funeral for Conswella's mother. Aaliyah also attended the funeral. While there, she reassumed custody of her sons and left. In the hours that followed, Conswella became frantic, trying to reach Aaliyah. "The next day, which was Sunday, after trying to call her, she finally reaches out to me, but it's a text," Conswella recalled. "She sent me a picture of a car in some bushes that kind of looked like it was wrecked."Aaliyah made no further contact, and Conswella told investigators she worried that Kingtrail may have met the same fate as Legend. "We were in the process of moving assets out to Vinton to search the body of water to see if we could locate the 1-year-old," said Calcasieu Sheriff Stitch Guillory.'He smiled at me': A miraculous discoveryAt around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, while deputies and the Jack family prepared for the worst about Kingtrail, a truck driver, unaware of the recent tragedy, was just going about his business, driving along Interstate 10 not far from the Vinton Welcome Center. Suddenly, he spotted something in a ditch alongside the road."There was a little boy sitting down in the embankment there," the unidentified trucker recalled."As I approached him, he smiled at me and then he started crying and walked toward me," he continued. "Once he walked toward me, I grabbed his hand and he stopped crying at that point."The trucker then phoned police, who later confirmed that the boy was indeed the missing Kingtrail. Though he had suffered bug bites, he otherwise was in good condition and has already been released from the hospital.Sheriff Guillory said his office views Kingtrail "as our miracle baby." "This kid spent two days out in the weather on the side of the highway," an incredulous Guillory said at a press conference. "Thank God that trucker seen him.""Unbelievable."'So blessed ... but also so hurt': Continued falloutA warrant was later issued for Aaliyah Jack for failing to report a missing child, and she was soon taken into custody in Meridian, Mississippi, about 400 miles east of Vinton, Louisiana, where her boys were found. She is currently fighting extradition to Louisiana, where she faces a bond of $300,000.Meanwhile, her mother has been left to grieve one grandson while fighting for custody of the other. "I was so blessed to hear the baby survived, but also so hurt because one is now gone," Conswella Jack said."It’s stressful because they're gonna put me through all what I'm about to go through just to get [Kingtrail] back," she continued. "I don't even have the funds for it, so I have to do everything I can to get that baby back, because ain't nobody know him like we know him."Kingtrail is currently believed to be in state custody. So far, no cause of death has been determined for his brother, Legend, whose body had no obvious injuries when it was recovered. The results of the autopsy are pending.Further charges in this case could be forthcoming.Like Blaze News? This mini gaming PC somehow has a 16-core AMD Ryzen CPU and proper GPU

Buying a really small PC often involves compromising on gaming performance, with tiny shoebox rigs commonly relying on integrated graphics, but this new mini gaming PC from Minisforum bucks the trend.
