Sipping a beer, electronic musician Hannes Teichmann looked around the darkened Apollo Hall, a soaring, gilded room in Berlin’s regal Staatsoper, or State Opera. Beneath enormous drop crystal chandeliers, 30-somethings in crop-tops, spangled disco shirts and gold-rimmed eyeglasses milled around, or conferred on bean bags inside a large, semi-transparent tent. Teichmann, a longtime fixture of Berlin’s underground techno scene, smiled. “For me, it’s like a club,” he said.  Certainly, the evening — part of a series called “Sustainable Listening” — was a departure from the Staatsoper’s regular program. Instead of chamber music or introductions to new opera performances, tonight the Apollo Hall hosted a political scientist’s talk about consumerism, capitalism and how we as a society must re-conceive work (among other things, we should do less of it, so we have more time for socializing, hobbies, volunteer work and politics, and feel less of a need for “retail therapy”), if we are going to stop harming the environment.  The “Sustainable Listening” series combines music and message. Between ideas about unpaid household labor, the impact of AI, and “bullshit jobs,” they played throbbing drums, melancholy string instruments, and even a typewriter. Hannes and his brother Andi, known collectively as the “Gebrueder Teichmann” (or Teichmann brothers), sampled the sounds in real time, creating live electronic grooves.  For audience member Dina Rossbach, a psychologist, the mixture of music and message worked well. “Certain sentences from the lecture, with the music — they’re echoing, in a different way, for me,” she said. “It was poetic,” agreed her friend Michaela Aue, host of a meditation podcast.  In its second season, the Berlin Staatsoper’s “Sustainable Listening” series is just one of hundreds of projects launched by members of Germany’s Orchestra of Change, a grassroots, classical musician-led initiative whose goal is to use the emotional power of music in creative ways to protect nature and the climate. And, the musicians emphasize, we might just find that living more sustainably can be beautiful, fulfilling and fun.

Parents in the animal kingdom often have their work cut out for them, from octopus moms who can’t eat while looking after their eggs, to those animals going it solo. What is unusual is large mammals having multiple offspring, but that is exactly what’s happened in Yellowstone National Park as a grizzly bear female was spotted with an extremely rare five cubs. Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) are one of two species that live within Yellowstone, the other being the black bear (Ursus americanus). Bear cubs are usually born in January or February and typically in pairs though some litters can be up to four. This makes this litter of five even more unusual. In fact, it seems this is the first time a litter that large has ever been reported in the park.Andrea Baratte, a tour guide at Yellowstone who managed to film the cubs, told Cowboy State Daily he’d never heard of a litter of five before. “I’m so glad that I got to document it, otherwise nobody would have believed it,” he said.     Nature photographer Stan Mills also filmed the cubs. “These grizzlies were walking toward the right when I came over a little mound and spotted them,” Mills wrote in a caption in the video below (the bears can be seen at 2:23). “The mother spotted me while I was getting my camera out.”       There is the question of whether the cubs all belong to the one bear mother or some have been adopted from another litter. In 2011, mother and daughter adult bears each gave birth to two and three cubs, respectively. The third cub originally belonging to the daughter was later adopted by the older bear. In 2016, a Katmai brown bear adopted a yearling cub in addition to her own 9-month-old after its mother died. Grizzly bear mothers have been known to abandon their cubs, possibly due to fear of humans or human contact. “If this was truly a litter of five, it would be the first one recorded in the history of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, for sure,” said Frank van Manen, who leads the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team, in a statement in WyoFile. Without genetic testing, we won’t know if the current Yellowstone supermom is biologically related to each of her offspring. “Five cubs in a litter are the most we have ever observed in the park, at least from 1959 to present — the period of the park's history we have good records for,” National Park Service spokeswoman Linda Veress told Cowboy State Daily.

In the face of President Biden’s difficulties in holding his campaign together in the wake of his disastrous debate performance, it is worth looking back to the Big Thoughts of Univision anchor and Special Advisor to the CEO Jorge Ramos, to wit: his open support for the idea of Squad Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez running for the presidency in 2024. As we’ve noted in the past, Ramos has a habit of speaking more freely to overseas press. Here’s what he said to Spain’s El País in August of 2020: JESUS RODRIGUEZ MANTILLA: Do you hope to see a Latino president? JORGE RAMOS: Of course! Not just to see one, but I hope I’m able to cover one as a journalist. There are more Latinos than African-Americans. They’ve already had one. The next giant step would be to see a Latina in the White House. RODRIGUEZ MANTILLA: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, once she’s old enough to run, after turning 35? RAMOS: She’s part of the generation that my 31-year-old daughter Paola belongs to. RODRIGUEZ MANTILLA: How do you define them? RAMOS: Direct, fearless. They tell it like it is. They don’t wait. They show themselves to be very impatient. They handle cell phones and social media like no one else, and will quickly seize control from those who hold it now. So much so that I hope they’re in even more of a hurry. The blacks already had their president, said Ramos, therefore it’s time to make way for a Latina. To the hammer, every problem looks like a nail. To the race essentialist, every problem can be fixed with more representation.  As we noted at the time: Now imagine, for a split second, the outrage and high dudgeon were a Fox News opinion to say that African-Americans already got to have a president. In any context. The advertiser boycott and “Fire X” campaigns would launch that very evening. CNN would convene a braying mob for a town hall, and the left would find some way to tie it all back to Donald Trump.  One wishes that Ramos’ naked racialist Jacobinism and open simping for AOC ‘24 were merely embarrassing, and not also extremely dangerous given today’s political climate. But Ramos quite openly and transparently is who he is. Univision’s continued indulgence of their senior news anchor’s extreme opinions, in print and otherwise, is further proof that the network is little more than a radical advocacy PAC with a broadcast license, engaged in raw partisan politics under cover of its news division. Nearly four years have passed since that interview, but not much has changed. Univision, under new ownership, sometimes pretends to rein itself in although they are still an immigration advocacy network above all else and, therefore, a client of the Democrat Party. Ramos is still as much of a woke activist as ever, but not as much of a mouthpiece for AOC as he once was. In many ways the luster has worn off of AOC, having proven herself a disappointment to the left and a constant object of mockery to the right. Nonetheless, Ramos is still very much the race merchant he was when he said that blacks had their president and that it was time for Millenials, generally, and for AOC, specifically. Given the current state of presidential politics, one wonders whether Ramos regrets actually stating those thoughts out loud and in public.
