Supreme Court Throws Out ‘Social Media Censorship’ Cases In Florida And Texas

The Supreme Court punted Monday on two cases concerning whether Florida and Texas’ anti-social media “censorship” laws are lawful under the First Amendment—providing no real clarity for either GOP-led states or the social media companies challenging them, as the court sent both cases back to lower courts after justices ruled unanimously that the lower courts hadn’t properly evaluated the issue. NetChoice, a lobbying group representing and funded by nearly 40 major tech companies,...

Social media giants get temporary Supreme Court win but no final clarity on free speech rights

The Supreme Court handed a temporary win to social media giants like Facebook (META), YouTube (GOOG, GOOGL), and TikTok as it sent a set of free speech cases back to the lower courts. But the unanimous decision left unsettled the question of whether states can strip dominant social media companies of their power to unilaterally block users or remove posts that express certain viewpoints. The set of cases before the high court challenged state laws in Florida and Texas...

Republican Congresswoman Charged With Weapons Violation At Airport

Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN) was charged with a weapons violation at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia. The Indiana Republican reportedly brought a handgun in her luggage. A spokesperson for Spartz said she “accidentally carried an empty handgun in her suitcase with no magazine or bullets,” NBC News reports. Rep. Victoria Spartz has been charged with a weapons violation at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority confirms to NBC News. https://t.co/uxZFWm21l7 — NBC News (@NBCNews) July 1, 2024 NBC News reports: The spokesperson, who said Spartz was charged Friday, cited a section of Virginia law tied to the dangerous use of firearms or other weapons, which makes it a crime to “possess or transport” a gun or a variety of other dangerous weapons “into any air carrier airport terminal.” The statute classifies the violation as a misdemeanor. A spokesperson for Spartz said the citation was issued before her international flight to a meeting for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly, which took place in Romania. “Last Friday, Rep. Spartz accidentally carried an empty handgun in her suitcase with no magazine or bullets, which she did not realize was in the pocket of her suitcase, while going through security at Dulles airport,” the spokesperson said in a statement Monday in response to a request for comment. According to CBS News, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said the weapon “was unloaded and in the individual’s carry-on bag.” A .380 caliber firearm was reportedly detected during passenger security screening. The district includes Hamilton County and other counties north and northeast of Indianapolis. She is seeking re-election in November’s election. She fended off eight rivals in the May Republican primary just months after she decided to run for reelection in a campaign that focused attention on her opposition to sending aid to her native Ukraine. She is the first and only Ukrainian-born member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Spartz wasn’t the only Hoosier caught with weapons in security checkpoints at Washington airports on Friday. TSA issued a news release Monday about catching an Indiana man with a loaded .22 caliber handgun and a switchblade among his carry-on items at Ronald Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Virginia. Dalton Patrick Raffert, 23, of Mitchell, Indiana, was issued a citation, the Washington Metropolitan Airports Authority tells I-Team 8. The TSA release notes, “Guns are not permitted through the security checkpoint and the traveler faces a stiff financial civil penalty from TSA. The penalty for carrying weapons can reach a maximum of $15,000.”

Cockatiel Loves New Canine Sibling, But Golden Retriever Isn’t So Sure…

Whether it’s a human or an animal friend, there’s so much joy in welcoming a new member into your family. That said, it’s common for siblings to have mixed feelings about the addition of a new sibling. Similarly, pets can feel the same way… about other pets. Elizabeth MB’s Golden Retriever is the perfect example after getting a new cockatiel friend. Although the two are different in many ways, the bird seems to love having a dog in his life. The dog, on the other hand, might not feel the same way… at least just yet. This can be seen in a hilarious viral video, which you can watch for yourself below. Here, you’ll see the cockatiel singing away, having the time of his life while resting on his sibling’s head. It seems that the same can’t be said about the golden retriever. @elizabethmb8 Someone one didnt have a choice in the new pet for the family#dog #dogsoftiktok #dogsofttiktok #doglover #doglove #cockatielsoftiktok #cockateil #goldenretriever #goldenretrieverlife #cockateiloftiktok ♬ original sound – Elizabeth MB There’s just something about this adorable dog’s blank stare that screams, “Mother, what have you done to this family?” In fact, even Elizabeth shares in the caption that, “Someone didn’t have a choice in the new pet for the family.” This Golden Retriever Still Isn’t Sure How to Feel About Her New Bird Sibling… Turns out, this cockatiel is quite a fan of putting on performances for his family. He’s particularly fond of the song, If You’re Happy and You Know It. In another video, we see that the bird chose to wake up his sister with his sweet melodies… not that she asked for them, of course. @elizabethmb8 Have you ever had a cockateil disrupt nap time? #dogsoftiktok #dogsofttiktok #dog #dog #doglover #doglove #cockatielsoftiktok #cockateil #goldenretriever #goldenretrieverlife #cockateiloftiktok #doggo ♬ original sound – Elizabeth MB I have a feeling these videos resonate deeply with anyone who has a sibling of their own, no matter if they’re usually the bird or dog in these situations. Still, just like human siblings, there’s a growing love between these creatures as well. This can be seen in Elizabeth’s reply to being asked if her dog ever gets any peace. “Ninety-nine percent of the time,” she explains, “but that 1% is filled with love and If You’re Happy and You Know It.” You can find the source of this story’s featured image here!
