Cats are rather infamous for being “vomity” creatures, with hairballs being the cause of most feline gastrointestinal evacuations. Because of this, a certain amount of vomiting is considered normal for cats, sometimes making it more difficult to recognize when there is a problem. There are a few key points to consider when assessing your cat’s upchuck habits, including whether we are dealing with vomiting or regurgitation, how often they are doing it, and the amount, consistency, and color of what they are bringing up. Although cats will experience the odd vomit from time to time, any cat that is vomiting frequently or violently, is losing weight, or is showing any other signs of illness should be assessed by your veterinarian without further delay. If your cat is throwing up brown liquid, you are going to want to know why. Fortunately, you have found yourself in the right place. Let’s take a look at how the color of your cat’s vomit can be a useful diagnostic tool, as well as what else you need to know. The 3 Reasons Your Cat Is Throwing Up Brown Liquid The color of your cat’s vomit can give us a surprising amount of information about what’s driving the problem. For example, yellow vomit (bile) often indicates an empty stomach, clear vomit suggests they’ve been drinking a lot of water, and pink vomit can be a sign of mild bleeding in the stomach or esophagus. The reasons this fluid might be brown include: 1. Diet Most cat foods are varying shades of brown, so brown-hued vomit is not a huge surprise. However, if your cat’s food tends to be a paler beige or yellow, we need to consider other causes. 2. Bleeding in the Gastrointestinal Tract Fresh blood from the esophagus or stomach will show up as red or pink in the vomit, but if there is a slow bleed (e.g., from a gastric ulcer) or if there is bleeding further along in the intestines, this can appear brown or even black when thrown up. If you suspect your cat’s vomit may contain blood, you should contact your vet immediately. 3. Fecal Matter If your cat has an obstruction further down the intestines or large bowel, this can cause fecal matter to back up in the digestive tract and appear as vomit. The smell of the liquid will be the most obvious indication that this is the problem, and it is a sign that your cat needs urgent veterinary care. What’s the Difference? Vomiting, or throwing up, is an active process whereby the contents of the stomach or small intestines are forced upward into the esophagus and out of the mouth. It is usually accompanied by signs of nausea (drooling, lip smacking, appearing unwell) and involves abdominal effort. The material produced when vomiting typically includes fluid, partially digested food, or hairballs. Common causes of vomiting include: Food intolerance/inflammatory bowel disease Systemic illness (e.g., hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, liver disease, pancreatitis) Toxin ingestion Intestinal obstruction/hairballs Intestinal parasites Regurgitation is a more passive reflex, whereby food is ejected from the esophagus before or as it reaches the entry to the stomach. There are usually little or no signs of nausea, and the material brought up closely resembles what went in. Causes of regurgitation include: Esophageal obstruction/hairballs Congenital defect (e.g., persistent right aortic arch) Megaesophagus Eating too quickly Gastrointestinal motility issues/delayed gastric emptying If your cat is throwing up brown liquid, we are mostly likely dealing with vomiting, unless they are regurgitating undigested gravy. If in doubt, take a photo of the liquid to show your vet. Conclusion There are many reasons why our cats might throw up, and the more information we can give our vets, the more quickly we can reach a diagnosis. Being able to describe whether your cat is vomiting or regurgitating, how much, how frequently, and the consistency and color of the material are all important factors to be aware of, and photographs can also be very helpful. This is an old breed, with the first records of the breed in Thailand originating between the 14th and 18th Centuries, although the breed likely existed before that date. The Siamese was taken to Burma in the 18th Century, which is how the Burmese cat got its start, and by the turn of the 20th Century, the Siamese’s popularity had spread to England and other parts of Europe. The Siamese Cat Club was established in England in 1901 and the breed was officially recognized by the Cat Fanciers’ Association in 1906. The first Siamese in the U.S. actually predates those in England by nearly 20 years, having been first introduced in 1878. At that time, the Seal Point Siamese was the only officially recognized coloring of the Siamese, though several other colors are now officially recognized. How Seal Point Siamese Cats Gained Popularity The breed’s popularity really took off with its introduction to England. In 1885, a year after the first breeding pair were taken to the country by the British Consul-General, Edward Blencowe Gould, the breeding pair and their three offspring were shown at the Crystal Palace Show in London. Their unusual physical appearance, and their friendly behavior, meant they were popular at the exhibition, and this started the country’s fascination with this Asian breed. More Siamese were taken to the UK and bred. While some described them as being an unnatural nightmare of a cat, others called them the Royal Cat of Siam and their popularity grew. However, they were still quite difficult to obtain, but their recognition by the Cat Fanciers’ Association 20 years later shows that they had gained popularity by then. Despite only finding its way outside Asia in the 19th Century, it gained recognition quickly. The Cat Fanciers’ Club, in the UK, recognized the breed in 1902 and it was then recognized by the Cat Fanciers’ Association in the U.S. in 1906. As the original color of the breed, the Seal Point is recognized by those clubs and associations that do recognize the breed, although many have opened their books further to allow for other color points. The Seal Point Siamese Cat can make a wonderful pet. They are known for being loving and affectionate and are also playful and can be quite mischievous, which makes them a fun cat to have around. Their intelligence means that the breed can also be trained, although their independence means they won’t necessarily respond to commands every time. The Siamese is known to be a vocal cat, and it isn’t afraid to use its voice to get the attention of its human owner. Some owners like this conversational attribute, but it also deters other potential keepers. FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL—A coalition of conservative activists and policy experts is urging Congress to reject a bill making women eligible to be drafted into the military.   One group, Concerned Women for America, sent a letter with dozens of individual co-signers in response to the Senate Armed Services Committee’s approving an annual defense package containing the controversial draft provision.  “This monumental policy change would force the U.S. military to erase key biological differences between males and females that will affect readiness in wartime,” reads Concerned Women for America’s letter Thursday, which was shared exclusively with The Daily Signal.  “The Senate should not buy into the lie that women’s equality with men means that the sexes are the same,” the letter says. Numerous representatives of military policy, religious, and research organizations signed onto the letter from Concerned Women for America, as did several regional CWA chapters.  The letter highlights research showing that “most women cannot meet combat arms standards while most men can,” adding: ‘Gender-neutral’ call-ups of both men and women would jam the induction pipeline and slow mobilization at the worst possible time—when our soldiers are fighting and dying on the battlefield.    NDAA-letter-re-womens-draftDownload Penny Nance, president and CEO of Concerned Women for America, described the current draft of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2025 as “social experimentation” in a comment to The Daily Signal.  “An NDAA that drafts our daughters and granddaughters is a nonstarter, and with this letter, we are building a coalition to call on members of courage to oppose its advancement and will rally opposition to it from American women,” Nance said of the message to Congress.  The call to reject the defense bill as drafted came one day after another letter demanding the same of both House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.   The decision by the Senate Armed Services Committee to draft women “flies in the face of truth and everything that we claim to stand for as conservatives,” Advancing American Freedom writes in its own letter, which dozens of activists, policy experts, and current and former government officials also signed. The letter calls the proposal to draft women a denial of “logic” and “common sense.” Johnson’s office told Fox News Digital on Wednesday that the House speaker opposes drafting women, but declined to comment further to The Daily Signal. A bronze bust of the Roman emperor Caligula that is small in size but large in historical significance has been rediscovered 200 years after it fell into obscurity. Dr. Silvia Davoli, curator at Strawberry Hill House, the stately home in Twickenham built by author and MP Horace Mann, identified the bust in the Schroder Collection and it was authenticated by metal experts and scholars of Roman art. Just five inches high, the bust is one of only eight surviving small-scale busts made during the reign of Caligula (37-41 A.D.) intended for display in home shrines alongside ancestral portraits and the household deities. After Caligula was assassinated by his own Praetorian Guard, his uncle and successor Claudius had many of his statues removed or altered to look like more palatable members of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, namely Augustus or himself. With Caligula very much out of favor, people who had the personal busts got rid of them. A few have been found in the Tiber where they were unceremoniously tossed. This one outlasted all of the Julio-Claudians only to be buried when the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. covered the city of Herculaneum in 60 feet of volcanic mud that hardened to stone. It saw the light of day again in 1630 years later when Emmanuel Maurice de Lorraine, the Prince d’Elboeuf, a French nobleman and general of the Holy Roman Emperor’s cavalry in Naples, got a tip from a local farmer that he’d discovered some fine marbles while digging a well. Between 1709 and 1711, d’Elboeuf was the first to “excavate” Herculaneum, in the sense that he was tunneled down through 60 feet of volcanic stone to pillage marbles, mosaics, statues and anything else he could find to decorate the new palace he was building in nearby Portici. (It turns he was plundering Herculaneum’s theater, although that wasn’t known until the King of Naples took his turn plundering it in 1738.) The tiny bust of Caligula was apparently one of the first objects he found. It was correspondence between D’Elboeuf, Horace Walpole and Horace Mann, the British envoy to Florence, that was the first reference Dr. Silvia Davoli found to the tiny portrait bust of Caligula. Mann got it from D’Elboeuf and sent it to Walpole in May of 1767, one of a number of antiquities Mann secured for Walpole’s collection at Strawberry Hill House. Mann was obsessed with the bust. He wrote in a letter to Mann: “I gaze on it from morning to night. It is more a portrait than any picture I ever saw. The hair and ears seem neglected, to heighten the expression of the eyes, which are absolutely divine, and have a wild melancholy in them, that one forebodes might ripen to madness.” (Walpole Correspondence, 30 May 1767) Its eyes are extraordinary, their original inlaid silver still in place instead of the empty sockets that are usually seen in bronzes. Walpole’s collection was more documented than most other 18th century collections. He commissioned artist John Carter to make drawings of the objects in Strawberry Hill House, including a life-sized drawing of the Caligula bust. Carter’s drawing was the second reference to the bust Davoli found. Walpole kept his beloved Caligula bust for the rest of his life. After his death in 1797, it was passed to various family members, eventually being sold to a private collector. In the 1890s, it was purchased by Sir John Henry Schroder. By then its identity was long lost and it was catalogued in the Schroder Collection as the 15th century bust of a young man. As curator of Strawberry Hill House, Davoli has been researching the Walpole collection for years, looking in institutions and private collections for dispersed objects mentioned in inventories, correspondence and Carter’s drawings. The Caligula bust was one of the most sought-after pieces, but despite her meticulous research tracking the lost treasure, in the end she found it by accident. Late last year Davoli was perusing the Schroder Collection inventory for an exhibition at Strawberry Hill on treasure hunting. “By chance, I saw this page with what looked like Walpole’s bronze. Wow!” The bust was taken to Rupert Harris, the London metal ­conservator specialist, who said the bronze composition tallied with 2,000-year-old objects. In the past fortnight, Dr Dietrich Boschung, an expert on imperial Roman iconography, has been shown photos of the bust. “I’m convinced it is Caligula,” says Boschung, from the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Cologne. He points to silver inserted into the eyes of the bust – a practice common for emperors. Boschung also believes the Herculaneum connection is very plausible. “Around that time, many Roman bronzes were found there.” The rediscovered emperor will now return to Strawberry Hill House on long-term loan, It will go on public display for the first time in the new exhibition, The Art of Treasure Hunting, which opens on June 29th.
