Supreme Court overturns federal bump stock ban, siding with Austin gun dealer

An Austin gun shop owner succeeded Friday on a years-long quest to overturn a federal ban on bump stocks, winning a 6-3 victory from the U.S. Supreme Court. Bump stocks are devices that allow semi-automatic rifles to fire hundreds of rounds in a minute. The court ruled the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives can not include bump stocks under legislation banning machine guns. The overturned ATF rule required owners of bump stocks to either destroy them or surrender...

Supreme Court’s Bump Stock Ruling Is Dystopian Nonsense

In a decision that may mark the low point for blinkered statutory interpretation in the history of the US Supreme Court, the conservative majority has concluded that gun regulators violated the law when they decided that bump stocks turn a semiautomatic rifle into an illegal machine gun. If you want to know why people hate lawyers, just look at the majority’s opinion — which flies in the face of all common sense. One day it will be taught in law schools as the prime example of how...

These cities are now so expensive they’re considered ‘impossibly unaffordable’

Anyone with half an eye on the housing market over the last two decades will know that in many countries, not least the United States, it’s become much more difficult to buy a home. But a new report sums up the feeling of many potential home buyers by creating a category that labels some major cities as “impossibly unaffordable.” The report compared average incomes with average home prices. It found that pandemic-driven demand for homes with outside space, land use policies aimed at...

Republicans Upset by Trump's Conviction Should Embrace Criminal Justice Reform

As a general rule in politics and public policy, I'd suggest applying one's principles as consistently as possible. It's hard to be taken seriously if, say, you want the feds to prosecute your political opponents on some ill-defined charges—and then complain about the "weaponization" of the justice system when you or your allies are in the dock. Just saying. One of my oft-stated warnings for those, on the Left or Right, who advocate for new laws, more regulation, and broader powers for...

Video shows 80 years of subtle sexism in 2 minutes

Subtle, condescending sexist remarks such as "When are you going to have children?" and "You'd be so pretty, if you tried" are heard by women on a daily basis. Like water torture, what's subtle and persistent can become debilitating over a lifetime. Making things more difficult is the contradicting nature of many sexist clichés that women are subjected to starting in childhood, such as "Is that all you're going to eat?" and "You eat a lot for a girl." Then there are the big-time, nuclear bomb sexist remarks such as "Don't be a slut" and "What were you wearing that night?" that are still shockingly common as well. It's hard for men to truly grasp this never-ending barrage of sexism because it's not in their faces. That's why The Huffington Post created the video "48 Things That Women Hear in a Lifetime* (*That Men Just Don't)," in which women of all ages share the most common sexist comments they hear—but which men never do.This article originally appeared on 8.8.21
