Horizon gets playful with new Lego spinoff

Image: Sony Interactive Entertainment One of the cuter reveals at Summer Game Fest was the Lego-ified version of Horizon’s postapocalyptic future. The game is called Lego Horizon Adventures, and it looks like a playful action-adventure game set (obviously) in the Horizon universe. Naturally, there’s lots of building as well. And co-op play. And some very goofy jokes fitting Lego’s many video game spinoffs. This isn’t the first collaboration between the two, as Lego released a Horizon Forbidden West set in 2022, But it appears that Sony is intent on growing the franchise into one of its tentpoles. The original game was followed by a sequel on the PS5 (and PS4), and it’s also being adapted into a show on Netflix. Lego Horizon Adventures is launching this holiday. As a Sony... Continue reading…

Civilization 7 is launching in 2025

Image: 2K Games It’s been a long wait, but the next Civilization has finally been revealed. At the main Summer Game Fest keynote, publisher 2K officially announced Civilization 7, the first new entry in the strategy series since 2016. We didn’t get any real details or actual gameplay, but instead a very brief teaser trailer that looked a lot like, well, Civilization. But there’s one thing we do know: the game won’t be launching until 2025. And it’s coming to a number of platforms, with the launch planned for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. More details will be coming in August, according to 2K, with a “full gameplay showcase.” There were some inklings this was coming. Ahead of the show, the publisher teased that “the next iteration in one of 2K’s... Continue reading…

Google’s $2.3 million check helped the company get a trial by judge instead of jury

Illustration by Cath Virginia / The Verge The antitrust lawsuit by the Justice Department and eight states seeking to break up Google’s alleged adtech monopoly will be heard by a judge this fall, as the company preferred. The government’s lawyers had included a damages claim in their lawsuit and pursued a trial by jury. Jury trials can be more unpredictable, like Epic’s courtroom win over Google last year, and a legal expert told The Verge that if the government was successful, it could make Google more likely to settle the case. But Reuters reports that won’t happen after the company filed a copy of a $2.3 million cashier’s check — without admitting any liability or wrongdoing — that it said would be enough to cover triple the monetary damages requested by the government, if... During the sneak peek, we got a glimpse at each of the characters and their various roles aboard the Skeld. We first heard about the Among Us series last year, which is made in collaboration with CBS Studios, Among Us developer Innersloth, and Titmouse, the animation studio behind Big Mouth and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. AMONG US ANIMATED SHOW The title teaser is here. Watch it and prepare for chaos and sabotage coming to a screen near you. pic.twitter.com/GK6Cfp8JUB— Among Us (@AmongUsGame) June 7, 2024 We already know some of the characters — and their voice actors — that will appear in the show. Samsung already leaked the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 designs

Rumors suggest Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 in about a month. It'd be right in time for the Summer Olympic Games, of which Samsung is a major sponsor. That's probably why we've already seen so many rumors detailing the two devices. But the best leaks always seem to come directly from Samsung. To that point, the company appears to have accidentally revealed the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 designs weeks early. I suppose accidents happen. But it's not the first time Samsung's websites have inadvertently published marketing materials earlier than they were supposed to. What is interesting is that Samsung has also shared more details about its Galaxy AI suite of features, with a focus on privacy and on-device processing. The company also teased Galaxy AI features coming to its foldables without actually naming the Fold 6 and Flip 6. It's starting to look like a coordinated marketing attack ahead of the most anticipated AI event of the year, Apple's WWDC 2024. Continue reading... Microsoft’s changes AI Recall feature after intense criticism

Microsoft’s changes AI Recall feature after intense criticism

When Microsoft pulled back the curtain on Copilot Plus PCs in May, one announcement caught the eye of many cautious Windows users. One of the exclusive features coming to Copilot Plus PCs is called Recall, which uses artificial intelligence to take snapshots of the screen, store and analyze them locally, and then allow you to search for them on a visual timeline. Unsurprisingly, this set off alarm bells for many privacy-conscious users. Following a barrage of criticism across the internet -- including a terrifying report about hackers being able to access Recall's data from cybersecurity research Kevin Beaumont -- Microsoft is making some major changes to the AI-powered feature before its full rollout. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maC9iZMaAlM In a post on the Windows Experience Blog on Friday, Microsoft's Pavan Davuluri shared details about Microsoft's response to the condemnation Recall received. First, and perhaps most importantly, Microsoft is updating its Copilot Plus PC setup experience to make it more clear whether or not you're opting in or out of using Recall. If you buy a Copilot Plus PC, you will now see a new screen which describes the feature and then asks if you want Windows to be able to save snapshots of your screen. Microsoft is also requiring users to enroll in Windows Hello to enable Recall. In order to see your timeline or search in Recall, proof of presence will be necessary. Finally, Microsoft says that it's adding additional layers of protection to Recall, including “just in time” decryption protected by Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS). The snapshots will only be decrypted when the user authenticates. Plus, Microsoft encrypted the search index database to provide one more layer of safety. These changes might not be enough to convince everyone to enable Recall, but it's encouraging to see Microsoft respond to criticism so promptly. Copilot Plus PCs from Microsoft and others will launch on June 18, which is also when the Recall preview ships to customers. Don't Miss: Windows 11 Recall is the AI feature I’ve always wanted, and it’s absolutely terrifying The post Microsoft’s changes AI Recall feature after intense criticism appeared first on BGR. Blood Sausages and Yak Milk: Bronze Age Cuisine of Mongolian Nomads Unveiled

University of Basel  Bronze cauldrons were used by the inhabitants of the Mongolian steppe around 2,700 years ago to process animal blood and milk. This is shown by a protein analysis of archaeological finds from this period.  Scattered across the Eurasian steppe, archaeologists repeatedly come across metal cauldrons from the Bronze Age during excavations. However, it was previously unclear exactly what they were used for. Now, an international study led by researchers at the University of Basel and published in the journal Scientific Reports reveals their secret: Mongolian nomads collected blood from slaughtered animals, presumably for sausage production, in these cauldrons and may have also fermented milk in them, mainly from yaks.  Read moreSection: NewsHistory & ArchaeologyHistoryAncient TraditionsRead Later
