Summer Game Fests Eye-Watering Trailer Prices Convince Fans Independent Showcases Are Better

Even though the much-anticipated and must-see gaming show of the year is dead and buried, E3 still lives on in all of our memories as the highlight of our video game calendar. The legacy of those times now lives on through the livestreaming event, the Summer Games Fest, hosted and created by Geoff Keighley, and if you ever wondered how much those trailers set publishers back, well, it's a hell of a lot.

What is ‘nature-based carbon removal’ and is it any better than carbon offsets?

Workers plant trees at an ecological afforestation demonstration zone on April 11, 2023. | Photo: Getty Images Big tech companies are increasingly turning to nature to do the dirty work of cleaning up their greenhouse gas emissions. The idea is to use plants and ecosystems that naturally absorb CO2 to compensate for industry pollution, a tactic brands have come to call “nature-based carbon removal.” At first glance, these attempts sound a lot like carbon offset projects that have a checkered past. For decades, companies have purchased credits from offset projects to try to cancel out some portion of their carbon footprint, typically by planting trees, restoring or protecting ecosystems that sequester CO2 through photosynthesis. It all sounds green and dandy on paper. But studies have shown that this strategy repeatedly fails to have any... Continue reading…

Where the CHIPS Act money has gone

Illustration: Alex Castro / The Verge Since the passage of the CHIPS and Science Act last August, eight companies have already received more than half of the planned government direct funding. These companies have collectively received $29.34 billion in funding through the CHIPS Act for semiconductor factories across the country. The law, a $280 billion package to support innovation in the US, includes $52 billion in subsidies for semiconductor manufacturing and was passed last year. These investments only concern the construction or expansion of semiconductor fabrication facilities and do not include government funding for other chip research facilities. As of writing, Intel, Micron, Global Foundries, Polar Semiconductor, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC),... Continue reading…

First pile of feces who identifies as a beautiful woman is crowned Miss America

Chet, the first human turd who identified as a beautiful woman, has been crowned Miss America, in a groundbreaking and historic moment for the pageant and the world at large. “I am thrilled and honored to have been chosen as the first human turd to represent the people of America,” said Chet in a recent press release. “I believe that everyone deserves the chance to experience the joy and wonder of being a beautiful woman, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share my passion with the world.” The announcement has sent shockwaves through the pageant and human turd communities, with many people expressing their support and admiration for Chet’s bold and courageous decision. “Chet is an inspiration to us all, and I know that her reign as Miss America will be a huge success,” said one fellow human turd, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “She is a shining example of the power of acceptance and progress, and I am proud to call her my friend.” But not everyone is convinced, and many people are calling Chet’s win a travesty and a joke, arguing that it is impossible for a human turd to be a beautiful woman. “This is ridiculous,” said one skeptical observer, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “How can anyone think that it’s a good idea to crown a human turd as Miss America? It’s like electing a rock to be the next president.” Despite the backlash, Chet remains defiant, and she has vowed to continue fighting for her right to be a beautiful woman, no matter what the consequences may be. “I know that there are people out there who don’t understand what I am, and who are afraid of what they don’t understand,” said Chet in a recent interview. “But I believe that acceptance and progress are the keys to a better world, and I am committed to doing my part to make that world a reality.” In the end, only time will tell whether Chet’s reign as Miss America will prove successful, or whether it will go down in history as yet another example of the pageant’s willingness to throw caution to the wind in pursuit of its goals. But one thing is certain: this bizarre and outlandish win is sure to inspire a new generation of conspiracy theorists and political opportunists, and to remind us all that sometimes, the most effective way to take down one’s enemies is to simply make things up as one goes along.
