Many great movies, typically classics, usually follow some sort of norm. In The Florida Project, the director took child actor Brooklynn Prince and, with her, developed one of the most compelling characters of 2017. Prince plays six-year-old Moonee, a young girl living below the poverty line. In spite of the less-than-hopeful premise this may suggest, the film is as much a humorous and uplifting story as it is a look at the state of Americas youth. Its through Princes performance that the film becomes a celebration of life, no matter the circumstances.

If theres one thing that the 2022 thriller Monolith makes clear, its that oftentimes its not what you see but what you cant explain that gets under the skin. Directed by Matt Vesely, this slow-burn sci-fi thriller steers clear of flashy effects and loud action scenes to drive its narrative. Taking things up a notch, Vesely takes the minimalistic approach, relying on a one-woman performance from Lily Sullivan to keep things interesting. Set in the remote hills of Adelaide, the central character is a journalist trying to regain her credibility after a huge scandal derails her life. While shes out there, she immerses herself in a podcast project that explores unexplained mysteries. Soon enough, she stumbles upon an anomaly that seems pretty random at first glance. But as she digs deeper, the mystery starts seeping into her own life. Soon enough, its no longer just a podcast episode its personal.
