Openly gay Bessent, who has been described as "Soros's right-hand man", played a crucial role when Soros Fund Management bet against the British pound, ushering in the so-called Black Wednesday of 1992.

The operation shook the global currency market and generated over a billion dollars in profits for Soros, who became known as "the man who broke the Bank of England".

A similar "financial terrorist attack" on the part of Soros and Bessant also hit the Swedish krona in the fall of 1992 - something that created such chaos in Sweden that the Riksbank was forced to raise the key interest rate to an incredible 500 percent during the month of September.

Bessent joined Soros Fund Management shortly before these events, in 1991, and became a key player in the fund's success. In 2015, he quit and started his own hedge fund, Key Square Group.

Despite his past association with George Soros - who has been portrayed as one of Trump's biggest critics and is one of the top donors to the opposition Democratic Party - Bessent has become a close financial adviser to the president-elect. His support for Trump's economic policies, including the controversial trade tariffs, has cemented their cooperation. According to the Washington Post, Bessent is seen as a bridge between Trump's populist rhetoric and the liberal demands of the market.

Donald Trump paid tribute to Bessent in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, writing that Bessent will help him "usher in a new golden age for America".
