Should You Really Be Feeding Your Dog Raw Meat?

Should You Really Be Feeding Your Dog Raw Meat?

There seems to be a growing debate about whether you should feed your dog raw meat or not. It is a popular trend that is all over TikTok with pet influencers and is encouraged by some holistic veterinarians, but is it all it's cracked up to be?What is the "Bones And Raw Food" diet?In the past few decades, it has become more common to feed dogs heat-treated processed food. Now, some pet owners are bucking the more popular tinned dog food trend and going for the raw meat-based diet also known as “Bones And Raw Food”, which gives the delightful acronym of BARF and is marketed as more “Biologically Appropriate Raw Food”.This diet includes uncooked ingredients that can come from wild animals or livestock and people can either purchase these commercially or prepare them at home. In one 2016 survey, it was found that 3 percent of dog owners in the United States purchased raw pet food and 17 percent of dog owners purchased raw or cooked human food for their beloved furbabies. While a raw meat diet can meet the nutritional needs of the pet if it is balanced, there is not really any clear evidence that it is better for their health. There are also some potential risks to feeding the animals raw meat. What do the experts say? There are many different associations that discourage a raw meat diet for pets. These include the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), which opposes feeding this diet to cats and dogs because of the risk to human and animal health. They recommend cooking or pasteurization of the product until it reaches a safe minimum internal temperature which will reduce or eliminate any pathogenic organisms.   Even the Delta Society’s Pet Partners Program excludes animals that eat a raw meat-based diet from participating in their therapy animal program. The reason is that the diet could pose a risk to humans, pets, and other animals. What are the risks?Transmission of pathogens to petsThe whole world is full of microbes and some are more harmful than others. Many scientific papers have shown that any animal-sourced protein can be contaminated with different pathogenic organisms, including; Enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp, Campylobacter spp, and Clostridium spp. This can result in the animals developing foodborne illnesses.Transmission of pathogens to humansIf we are feeding our beloved companions with the food then there is also a risk of us getting illnesses as well. This could either be from the actual handling of the meat itself, as some of the pathogens could be transferred over to humans, or it could be from the dog. There has been evidence that has shown that seemingly healthy dogs can develop subclinical infections that could be passed on to people, especially elderly, pregnant, young, and immunocompromised people.  Antibiotic resistanceOne study found that feeding your dog raw food could also contribute to antibiotic resistance. Scientists looked at poop samples from over 600 healthy pet dogs and found that there was a high association between feeding dogs uncooked meat and them having E.coli that was resistant to one specific antibiotic (fluoroquinolone). Why do some people like the BARF diet so much? There are some purported benefits that people who favor this diet for their pets tout, but despite this, many claims are largely unproven, not based on scientific evidence, and are anecdotal.Their claims include:Cleaner teeth: there is limited evidence that raw feeding reduces tooth disease.A more natural diet: One thought process that is used by people who tout the need for a raw food diet is that wolves need raw meat as they have a limited capacity to digest dog food, which often has a large component made of carbohydrates. The domestic dog is genetically altered from its wild ancestors so can eat an increased starch diet.Avoids potential contaminants that commercial food may contain: In the past, there have been recalls due to contaminants in processed dog food.Better taste:  As with human food this can depend on the brand that the dogs are fed and the animal's taste. However, this cute pooch seems to enjoy it:             IFLScience is not responsible for content shared from external sites.Further research is probably needed before it is decided whether raw dog food is better or worse than cooked alternatives. But if the advice of the AVMA is anything to go by, it might be best to stick to cooked food for now.

Kimmel Wants To Put Trump Jury On SCOTUS, Hails Him Getting 'Some Comeuppance'

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel had the distinction of being the only late night host on the air on Thursday to react to former President Donald Trump’s New York conviction. Naturally, he and his audience were quite thrilled with Kimmel dreaming about putting the jury on the Supreme Court and being thankful that “this guy” got “some comeuppance.” Kimmel began his show by reporting, “We have a verdict in the case of the people versus O.J., I mean, D.J. Donald John Trump is guilty of 34 felony charges! After seven long weeks, the courtroom is empty and Donald Trump's diaper is full.”     Since there were no cameras allowed in the courtroom, Kimmel donned a robe and did a sketch with sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez pretending to be the jury foreman, “On the first charge of falsifying business records?” Rodriguez dutifully reported back “guilty,” which the pair repeated a couple more times before Kimmel asked, “On the next 31 charges?” to which Rodriguez gladly reported back, “Guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty!” Kimmel then took off the robe to add, “Poor Donald Trump. Seven weeks of sleep-farting all down the drain. All for nothing.” Later, after playing a clip of Trump denouncing the whole thing and vowing to fight on, Kimmel mocked, “The only thing you're going to be fighting to win is the Jell-O cup on your prison cafeteria tray.”     He also mused that “We should automatically make those jurors the new Supreme Court.” Moving on to the sentencing, Kimmel noted, “Sentencing is scheduled for July 11, which happens to be the day Aaron Burr shot Alexander Hamilton. And it's the day El Chapo escaped from prison. But this is not El Chapo, this is Pork Chopo we're talking about and this is not Mexico, this is New York.” After dreaming about Trump on the side of the road picking up ketchup packets as part of a community service sentence, Kimmel reported, “As if the day wasn't rough enough for Trump, the only family member who was there with him when the verdict was read was Eric. No Melania. No Ivanka. Just stupid Eric. Actually, there was a sweet moment when the verdict was read. They say Eric, who was sitting behind his father, put his arm around his dad and he leaned in close and Trump whispered, ‘I wish this had happened to you.’” Kimmel then took glee in Trump and his supporters misfortune, “Eric did his best though to give it -- he wrote – ‘May 30th, 2024 might be remembered as the day Donald J. Trump won the 2024 Presidential Election.’ Or it will be remembered as the day a jury in New York spanked your dad even harder than Stormy did with that Forbes magazine. I think-- I guess we'll have to wait to find out. It was very satisfying to finally see this guy get some comeuppance. And even more satisfying to see all the bloodsucking jellyfish who feed off his essence lose their minds.” At least Kimmel admitted that his interest in Trump’s case was not one of following the law, but of achieving a desired result against people he doesn’t like. Here is a transcript for the May 30 show: ABC Jimmy Kimmel Live! 5/30/2024 11:35 PM ET JIMMY KIMMEL: Thank you for joining us here in Los Angeles on what was a big afternoon in New York, and for the United States of America. We have a verdict in the case of the people versus O.J., I mean, D.J. Donald John Trump is guilty of 34 felony charges! After seven long weeks, the courtroom is empty and Donald Trump's diaper is full. The decision was unanimous. The jury wasted no time. They started deliberating yesterday. They got right to it. It played out in a strange way. At 4:15 this afternoon, reports said there would be no verdict. The judge was sending jurors home. Then, about twenty minutes later, they announced a verdict had been reached. We had to rewrite the whole monologue, it was a mess, but the decision was not televised, but it went something like this. I'll play the judge. Guillermo, you play the foreman. Okay? GUILLERMO RODRIGUEZ: Okay, okay. KIMMEL: All right. Let me put my judge's robe on real quick. There we go. Now, imagine we're in court. Foreman, have you reached a verdict? RODRIGUEZ: Yes, we have, your honor. KIMMEL: With one quick thing, the foreman is from Ireland. Do it like an accent. RODRIGUEZ [BAD IRISH ACCENT]: Oh. Yes, we have, your honor. [NORMAL VOICE] Something like that. KIMMEL: Okay. On the first charge of falsifying business records? RODRIGUEZ: Guilty. KIMMEL: On the second charge? RODRIGUEZ: Guilty. KIMMEL: On the third charge? RODRIGUEZ: Guilty. KIMMEL: On the next 31 charges? RODRIGUEZ: Guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty!  KIMMEL: That's right. Poor Donald Trump. Seven weeks of sleep-farting all down the drain. All for nothing. … KIMMEL: Listen, the only thing -- I have bad news. The only thing you're going to be fighting to win is the Jell-O cup on your prison cafeteria tray. Thirty-four felony charges. That's 34. That's 34. That's 34, folks. We should automatically make those jurors the new Supreme Court. Now the big question is, will he do time? After he is sentenced, he'll be allowed to appeal. Sentencing is scheduled for July 11, which happens to be the day Aaron Burr shot Alexander Hamilton. And it's the day El Chapo escaped from prison. But this is not El Chapo, this is Pork Chopo we're talking about and this is not Mexico, this is New York. Will the judge send him to Rikers Island? Will he get probation? Maybe they’ll put him under house arrest? Oh man, for Melania, that would be -- that is a double whammy with cheese is what that is. Apparently he could even be sentenced to community service. The judge could make him pick up trash along the side of the road. No joke. I vote for that. That is a beautiful image. Imagine Trump with a hefty bag picking up ketchup packets with one of those grabber pole things. Big truck goes by, blows that cotton candy hair flap to the other side of his head!  As if the day wasn't rough enough for Trump, the only family member who was there with him when the verdict was read was Eric. No Melania. No Ivanka. Just stupid Eric. Actually, there was a sweet moment when the verdict was read. They say Eric, who was sitting behind his father, put his arm around his dad and he leaned in close and Trump whispered, "I wish this had happened to you."  Eric did his best though to give it -- he wrote -- "May 30th, 2024 might be remembered as the day Donald J. Trump won the 2024 Presidential Election." Or it will be remembered as the day a jury in New York spanked your dad even harder than Stormy did with that Forbes magazine. I think-- I guess we'll have to wait to find out. It was very satisfying to finally see this guy get some comeuppance. And even more satisfying to see all the bloodsucking jellyfish who feed off his essence lose their minds.

Colton Underwood glorifies baby-buying, denying a child’s need for a mother

Former "The Bachelor" star and self-professed Christian Colton Underwood made headlines years ago when he came out as homosexual. Now, Underwood has announced alongside his husband, Jordan C. Brown, that they’re expecting a baby boy via surrogacy in the fall. Underwood even created a podcast called "Daddyhood," as he’s been pursuing “daddyhood” for two years now. “It’s almost always a baby boy,” Allie Beth Stuckey notes, before explaining that Underwood had been struggling with his sperm count before he was able to find an “egg seller.” “The reason again I don’t say egg donor is because it’s only called egg donor because of a technicality. It’s not legal to sell human tissue in the United States, and so egg donors say that they are being paid for their time and their effort, not actually their eggs,” Stuckey says. “But we all know the truth. They’re not donating their eggs; they are selling their eggs,” she adds. In an interview with Men’s Health, Underwood explained that he and his husband wanted the “egg seller” to be “somebody deep and cool.” “I believe in nature versus nurture. So give us the basics, and we can show this kid love,” he continued. Stuckey disagrees, quipping, “I’m not sure that you actually believe in nature, because you are denying that a child needs a mother.” Underwood related the process of finding an “egg seller” to using dating apps, which Stuckey also finds disturbing — as YouTuber Shane Dawson, who got his baby boy via IVF with his husband, related it to looking through catalogs. “They literally go through catalogs of women, not that different than prostitution, and they choose who is going to be the genetic mother,” Stuckey says. But it’s not as simple as just choosing a woman and giving her their sperm. “There’s the egg retrieval first, from the so-called egg donor. And then there’s the IVF process where they are using the sperm from these two men and they are mixing it together with the eggs that were retrieved and they’re creating embryos out of that genetic material, and then they are implanting the embryo that is created, that is selected, into a different woman,” Stuckey explains. That woman is the surrogate, who then has to take hormones in order to prepare her body for the foreign entity that will be placed in her uterus. “That’s very dangerous for the embryo, by the way. It can also be very dangerous health-wise for the surrogate because this is a very unnatural process,” Stuckey says. “The woman’s body can reject this little embryo.” The reason they use an “egg seller” separate from the surrogate is also completely unnatural. “Why do they have to be legally separate? So that neither woman can claim motherhood, so that neither woman can say that they are bonded to this child. Even the law recognizes that there is this strong, fierce, biological bond between the mom and a child,” Stuckey says. “It just makes it easier for everyone except for the baby, who will never know his biological mom and also is immediately ripped away from the only body, the only woman, the only home he has ever known immediately at birth.” “Again, treating a child much worse than we treat puppies and kittens in the United States, who legally we have to keep with their mother for six to 12 weeks after birth,” she adds. Sara Gonzales: Trump’s guilty verdict weaponizes the judicial system; sets a terrifying precedent

Donald Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts in his “hush-money trial,” and Sara Gonzales is horrified. “Just the crash of our civilization as we know it,” Gonzales comments, noting that she truly believed he was going to be found not guilty.“I am thinking that truth and justice will actually prevail in a case that is so important to the country, that even people from New York that hate Donald Trump’s guts can understand the ramifications of weaponizing the judicial system against a current president’s top political opposition,” she explains. “Well, my faith has been squandered today,” she adds. Gonzales believes this sets a terrifying precedent for the justice system in America. “The ramifications of this happening in this country in America, where you are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty — and you hear the facts and the merit of this case and you find out that there was none, and you want to talk about the hoops that these prosecutors had to jump through to even try this case as a felony,” she says.“Somehow our judicial system has been weaponized ... to the point that you can have absolutely no freaking evidence for your case, and yet if you try the person in the right place with a jury that is already prejudiced against them, truth doesn’t matter,” Gonzales says. “This is a very sad day for the country,” she adds.

Zotac Zone specs leak, and they’re pretty impressive

Ahead of its official debut at Computex, the Zonac Zone specs have leaked in full, and while they're pretty impressive, it may struggle against some more established devices in the market, unless, of course, it has a competitive price. While the Zotac Zone specs leak has opened the market up to some interesting comparisons, it's unlikely to challenge the Steam Deck as the best handheld gaming PC any time soon. Redfall just dropped its final update, and Nvidia DLSS 3 has finally been added to the game to help with PC performance, adding to the existing implementation of AMD FSR 2 and Intel XeSS. The Redfall system requirements were always relatively low, but boosting performance on Nvidia RTX graphics cards was still possible thanks to modders adding in DLSS shortly after release. Now, developer Arkane Austin has officially added the upscaling technology as a part of the game's final update. After three years of hype, amazing new FPS game finally lands on Steam

Okay, so here’s a confession: I’m a little bored with the whole ‘90s boomer shooter revival now. I love Doom. I love Half-Life. I love Quake, Blood, and Duke Nukem, but there have been so many spiritual revivals and variations on the formula over the past six years, and the material is starting to wear a little thin. Old-school-style FPS games don’t automatically charm me like they once did. So when I say that this new one, which was first trailed back in 2021 and has just arrived on Steam, is worth your attention, it’s not just because I’m a sucker for GoldSrc or id Tech visuals.
