Rural residents share things that people who've always lived in cities won't understand

If you were to travel around the U.S., you'd see probably note some cultural differences between various regions, from the East Coast to the West Coast, from the South to the Midwest. But what really gives Americans different experiences and perspectives is rural life vs. city life. Americans have a huge expanse of land we call home, some of which is made up of densely populated cities with intertwining highways and some of which is vast farmland dotted with small towns. Rural and city folks share the most important things in common, of course—the desire to live in peace, the ability to take care of our families, the need for a community we can count on, the appreciation of beauty and nature—but our daily lives can look totally different from one another in sometimes dramatic ways.Someone on Reddit asked, "Rural folks, what are the things city folks won't understand?" and the answers are a fascinating peek into life in the country for people who have lived their whole lives in cities. Here are some of the most popular responses:There may not be traffic, but there are tractors"Legitimately being late for school or appointments due to being stuck behind a tractor." – Bimblelina"I would always leave my house super early when it was planting season and harvest season." – Sadimal"We drove our tractors to high school one day per year to celebrate the agriculture that was all around us, wild times." – TwinTowwa69"When I was dating my now wife, we were long distance. I grew up in the middle of nowhere Missouri and has several farms around where I lived. One time I was talking to my then girlfriend on the phone and told her 'Ah crap, I'm stuck behind a tractor. Gonna be a long drive.'She was silent for a moment before saying '....a tractor? What?' Then it occurred to me that her having grown up in a suburb of Atlanta, had never experienced such a thing." – paddjo95Personal wars with the wildlife"You or someone you know has a personal vendetta against a wild animal in the area." – NFL_MVP_Kevin_White"I've never seen my father be more creative than when he's plotting against a racoon that has wronged him." – reinvent___"Oh my gosh yes. My dad's at war with a woodpecker. He’s even printed out an info pamphlet on woodpeckers and wrote in big letters “know thy enemy”. The amount of whirligigs and nets around the house is insane." – jbird8806"My uncle was in a war of attrition against beavers for literal decades." – KMM2404"Two of my neighbors have a shoot on sight policy for groundhogs. The one who is the most mild mannered was riding down the road on his side by side, and I see him slam the breaks, do a turnabout in a driveway, then heard a gunshot, then he sped off. Saw the groundhog the next morning. The other one, every time I hear a gunshot I wonder 'snake or groundhog?'" – TacticoolPeterSo many random cows"I own a house that sits smack in the middle of three cattle farms. The other night, I took my dog out to pee well after dark. There was a weird noise, and a pair of glowing eyes at the end of my driveway. It was, of course, a cow. I called my neighbor to the North. He drove his UTV down, inspected the cow, didn't recognize it, and called my neighbor to the south. He sent his teenage son over in a car with no catalytic converter/muffler. He also didn't recognize the cow. Finally, my neighbor from the West was summoned on his ATV. It was his cow. The rest of us stood there drinking beer and watching the Western neighbor drive his cow home with an ATV. Good times." – EarhornJones"My neighbor keeps her horses on our farm because we have some pastures already fenced in and the horses keep the grass level. One of the horses, Rose, loves to get out of the pasture and mosey around the farm — more than once she’s walked up to the house and bumped her nose against the window where I’m working inside to say hello. So of course I have to pop outside and pet her and then walk her back. ??♀️ She’s a darling.Neighbor also has a cow named Star who likes to come up and visit her equine sisters. A bit later, when my neighbor realizes the cow’s missing, I’ll see her trudging up the lane with a lead and then the cow meekly following behind her." – Elphaba78"Our cows got out last year for two days and I swear every old man for five miles was stoked to watch for them and help put them back. Word spread like wildfire they were out. Old men were texting on a group text and mounting their atvs and calling my husband. “I seen them on Troy’s place!” It was super helpful and entertaining." – farmchic5038So many random vegetables"Leaving your car windows closed at church in the summer so you don't come back out to a car full of zucchini" – Armyjeepguy"There’s no escaping the zucchini. It will be left on the hood, or the roof, or the gardener will straight up accost you after mass and shove a bag of it in to your arms, or trick your children into bringing bags of it out to the car." – MrsMeredith"I'm from western Iowa. Instead of zucchini, it's always sweet corn." – ProfessorRoyHinkley"This is exactly the example I use to explain to people the difference between the city and the country. If you live in the country the only reason you lock your doors to your car is the people don’t put vegetables in it. No one believes it’s not a joke." – Overall_Midnight_There's no such thing as a quick run to the grocery store"You need to carefully plan out your shopping needs because that trip to Walmart or Home Depot might be a two hour round trip." – lockednchaste"Moving rural taught me how to cook. I had to build up a well stocked pantry and freezer because the grocery store was an hour away. I had to learn how to plan meals because you needed to know what to thaw out. I learned so many substitutions because sometimes you just didn't make it to town and the milk, eggs, butter or what have you ran out. All that also got me more comfortable just throwing skillet dinners together because sometimes there just isn't time for recipes, but I knew what worked well together. Also, canned and frozen foods. Fresh produce is only good for the first few days after grocery day." – HplsslyDvtd2Sm1NtU"I was on the phone with someone one day and realized I forgot milk at the store. They were utterly flabbergasted that i said it was going to have to wait until a few days later to go get because I was not going to do an hour minimum of driving total just to get one item." – HobbyHoarder_Pigs are much scarier than you'd think"Full-grown pigs are massive, and terrifying. And they can and will eat someone if ever they get the opportunity." – Heroic-Forger"I'm reminded of my time at the University of Iowa. A fellow I knew, grad student age, but he wasn't actively attending, walked with a cane because of a gimpy leg. He'd broke it when he was a child, but he'd tell anyone who asked that he was mauled by a sow. He said the city people would just laugh it off as a joke. The country people would look at him in horror and say, 'And you're still alive?!?!'" – DrHugh"Having to explain to my kid why everyone was so scared when Dorothy fell into the pig pen in Wizard of Oz was surreal. I can't even remember when a healthy fear of swine was instilled into me." – tikierapokemon"I've worked with wolves, literally had some of them lick my face. I was significantly more uncomfortable being in a pen with a large pig." – Learningstuff247Talking about the weather isn't just trivial small talk"Weather changes your life. I've sat on the porch with my parents watching hail destroy our wheat crop days before it was due for harvest. There's nothing you can do. You just watch. I've also stood in a circle with my parents and older brother in the yard while we prayed for rain. For farmers, weather is destiny." – Cranialscrewtop"I took an English lit class in college and we read journal of a woman in the 1860s. Several people were really turned off by how much she wrote about the weather. As the only farm kid in the class I tried to explain to them how much of your life is dictated by the weather. Most of them just stared at me like I was nuts." – msjammies73"I'm not a farmer, I am from Nebraska. My relatives who live in a city in another state their whole lives don't understand why people here talk about the weather so much. It determines the local economy in a lot of ways." – bubbajones5963The sweet sound of snowy silence"Standing on my back porch in winter and there is absolute dead silence." – vankirk"The absolute quiet during a heavy snow fall. I went out during one once to take pictures. Got some great shots but the experience of being the only one around is the closest I’ll get to being a pioneer and being the first to see something." – naughtarneau"I miss dead silence at night. I grew up with it in a small town, but since college I’ve lived in places with actual civilization. But whenever I’ve brought friends back to my town for a weekend, they’re freaked out by the nighttime silence." – Petules"Silent and DARK. I've lived in huge cities, suburbs, and back-end-of nowhere unincorporated areas. How dark it gets at night just amazed me in the rural areas." – Nearby_Reality_5412"It’s so beautiful. My favorite thing every year is to go for a jog during the first snowfall. No sound but your feet, your breath, and that soft sound of millions of snowflakes landing at once. It’s a bit of peace you just can’t get anywhere outside of a cave." – xdrakennxThe Reddit thread has more responses, from not flushing the toilet during a power outage to why having multiple guns doesn't make you a gun nut, that are interesting reads about rural life. And of course, a reverse list could easily be made by city folks for people who have always lived in the country. The better we understand one another's basic daily experiences, the better we're able to see through one another's eyes and understand one another's perspectives.

School posts kindergarten to graduation transition video now people are crying on the internet

Graduation season has befallen upon American parents and caregivers. There are many country songs that croon on about how children grow up so fast that you'll miss it if you take your eyes off of them for just a second. The month of May starts the flow of tears down proud parents' cheeks as they watch the little person they raised have their named called for their very last high school moment. It's a feeling that is bitter-sweet and cannot be easily wrapped up in words to show the complexity of emotions both parents and graduates are experiencing. Mr. Tausch, principal of Louisville High School enlisted the help of the class of 2036 to honor how quickly the transition from kindergarten to high school graduate happens. The video is beyond adorable featuring seven kindergarteners jumping "into" the camera only to come out on the other side in caps and gowns as high school seniors. The short video is set to Elvis Presley's "Burning Love" and boy is it hitting people in the feels. Just about everyone that watches the video turns into a crying mess.See if you can get through it without getting a little something in your eye: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mr. Tausch (@principaltausch2.0) "Whoever had the foresight to make this is a genius. I'm bawling," one person shares."Not me sobbing! My daughter is graduating this year and I still can't comprehend how time went by so quickly," another mom writes."I didn’t know where this was going.. but once that first kid jumped I instantly started bawling my eyes out congrats grads & under grads," someone cries."Oh my God, these are not my children and I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes. This is the most amazing graduation video I've ever seen," one commenter says.People can't seem to get over how brilliant this video is or how emotional it made them over kids they don't know. Parents everywhere know what it feels like to put to bed a kindergartener and waking up a senior. A trippy time warp happens between those years and this video captures it perfectly.

The Curious Trump Tie: Alito’s Flag and Merchan’s Trial

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito is under attack because his wife has had the nerve — the nerve!!!! — to fly the American flag in front of their home in the accepted sign of distress: upside down. Not to mention that the Alito beach getaway house flies the “Appeal to Heaven” flag, a Revolutionary War banner that some flew at the Capitol on Jan. 6. All of which which has consequently deeply angered a left-leaning Alito neighbor, not to mention drawn the wrath of the liberal media. Meanwhile, at the Trump show trial in New York, the Biden-contributing, Trump-hating New York Judge Juan Merchan is going about the business of running the Trump show trial in a fashion that has drawn repeated calls of outright judicial corruption. So. What ties the two together? That would be, of course, former President Donald J. Trump. In Washington, Justice Alito’s flag-flying wife is seen by the Alito’s left-leaning neighbor as nothing less than an extension of her conservative justice husband’s potential Trump support in future Trump-related cases that may work their way to the Supreme Court. Therefore the flag must go. And in New York, Judge Merchan is relentlessly siding with the lefty New York prosecutor in his zeal to convict Trump of something — anything! Taken collectively, the responses to the actions of both symbolize the utter contempt the elites of the American Left have for average, Trump-supporting Americans. The question now is what to do about it. In terms of the Supreme Court, Newsmax headlines this: Chief Justice Roberts Rejects Senate Dems’ Request to Discuss Alito, Ethics The story reports:  Chief Justice John Roberts on Thursday declined an invitation to meet with Democrat senators to talk about Supreme Court ethics and the controversy over flags that flew outside homes owned by Justice Samuel Alito. …Justices decide for themselves when to step aside from cases, Roberts noted. Alito said he concluded nothing about the flags, both of which he said were flown by his wife outside their homes in Virginia and New Jersey, required his recusal. Politely put, the chief justice was telling the Democrat senators that a Supreme Court Justice has the right to fly the flag of his or her choice in front of their own decidedly private residence. And notably, no one is asking Democrat senators what flags they may fly in front of their own home. Three cheers for Chief Justice Roberts. Meanwhile, Judge Merchan sails along running his anti-Trump show trial, the guilty verdicts of which will instantly be appealed. Taken together, what is vividly on display here in both situations is an American Left that is decidedly set on silencing any dissent from their far-left agenda.  Whether that means a Supreme Court justice’s wife flying flags in front of their two homes or a left-wing Trump-hating New York judge fixing the conduct of his Trump trial. At a minimum? Three cheers as well for Justice and Mrs. Alito. Not to mention three cheers for former President Trump, who has been submitted to an outrageous and decidedly dangerous, un-American, weaponization of the law. The Purpose of Pride Month

The Purpose of Pride Month

The Stonewall Riots of 1969 were a fitting origin story for what would later come to be known as “Pride Month.” The riots — sparked by a group of cross-dressers at a gay bar that was raided by police in New York’s Greenwich Village — have earned a kind of religious reverence in the mythology of the LGBT movement and its annual holy month. (“Why we owe Pride to black transgender women who threw bricks at cops,” read one 2019 USA Today headline). Accounts of the event differ: Some suggest “that the tipping point came when police tried to arrest a gender-nonconforming ‘butch’ lesbian,” while others argue “it was a Black trans woman.” But whichever sexually confused barfly threw the first brick, the riot that followed has been afforded its own month-long commemoration — one-twelfth of the calendar year — replete with generous indulgences, loyalty oaths, and displays of solidarity from practically every major institution in America, and the inheritors of its legacy take to the streets every year to grace the public with graphic displays of their own sexual urges that would make even the original patrons of Stonewall blush. This tradition was formally institutionalized in the political calendar by Bill Clinton in 1999, and has since become a mainstay of modern American life. Antiquated American traditions such as President’s Day — previously George Washington’s birthday, before it was watered down to its more ecumenical modern form — and Memorial Day are only afforded 24 hours, and others, such as Columbus Day, are rapidly going the way of the dodo bird completely. But Pride Month, like Black History Month in February, is given the entire month of June. Whether or not enjoying homosexual sex is really something to be proud of is not a question that is asked, much less answered, very often these days. The explanation for Pride, when it is offered, tends to be something along the lines of honoring those who are “living their authentic selves.” Devoting countless dollars, political kowtowing, festivities, and a flurry of corporate product-hawking to celebrate the fearless indulgence of an unusual set of sexual urges likely would have struck previous generations of Americans as bizarre. But today, the entire affair has become so entrenched in the public conscience that people rarely stop to even question the premise at all. As a political matter, however, there’s long been something bigger afoot with Pride Month than the mere veneration of licentiousness. The rainbow-colored kitsch that we will undoubtedly be inundated with next month is a ritualistic expression of a deeper set of social mores and beliefs, as most traditions are. Pride Month, like Black History Month, Juneteenth, and even MLK Day, are the symbols of a revolutionary transformation in the American self-conception, representing an altogether different nation and people, which even now is vying to delegitimize and replace the ideas, myths, culture, and identity of the old one. The purpose of Pride Month, as an institution, is not merely sex and sexuality, but subversion. It is hardly a coincidence that the customs and symbols of the LGBT movements are so viscerally graphic and explicit, or that the activists who employ them often seem to revel in the offense they cause to Christians, conservatives, and just about anyone else associated with the old America. The half-naked men, gyrating suggestively in front of young children, the substitution of the American flag for the rainbow one, the topless men dressed as (and often surgically altered to resemble) women at the White House are meant to scandalize and offend. The now-common talk of “normalization” and “destigmatization” is the language of a distinctly and self-consciously political movement, which understands that they must mock, undermine, and delegitimize the old moral code before they can replace it with their own. Five Quick Things: Pier Pressure

I never used to think of myself as old. That’s changing. I was just a kid when Jimmy Carter was president. I hadn’t quite hit my 10th birthday when the jihadist lunatics in Iran overran our embassy in Tehran and took our people there as hostages. But I do remember how awful a time it was for our country — and particularly when the news hit that our ill-fated Desert One mission to rescue the hostages had failed. Desert One shortly became a symbol for the weakness and failure of the Carter administration and the low point in American prestige over which he presided. It was a good marker for what our country had become — gas lines, massive inflation, the Soviet Union on the march all around the world, the whole bit. I brought up Desert One in a conversation with someone of … a younger generation as a reference to what’s happening now earlier this week, and the poor kid hadn’t the faintest idea what I was talking about. Yes, she said, she knew about the hostages. But no, she had no idea Carter had attempted to rescue them using the U.S. military. “I mean, it was so long ago,” she said. And that’s when I realized that I am old. 1. Incompetence Without Pier But I was able to recover, amid that discouraging turn in the conversation, by noting that Desert One was kinda-sorta similar to Joe Biden’s own horrific symbol of weakness and failure, the ill-fated $320 million Gaza pier which supplied no civilians before it sank into the Mediterranean. Everything about the Gaza pier has been a complete debacle. The premise was wholly misguided, because “humanitarian aid” to the Gazans has the effect of PROLONGING THE WAR. What Israel is doing in Gaza, as a response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 atrocities that made their destruction a national Israeli imperative, is a siege. The best thing for civilians trapped in a siege is that it end quickly — either because the defenders are able to raise the siege or because the attackers are able to destroy the defenders. Team Biden thought they’d supply the civilians with goodies, which is a classic case of “that’s not how this works.” The fact that you can no more provide humanitarian aid to Gazan civilians than you can engage in trade with Cuba without enriching the Castro regime adds a second level of stupidity and futility to this exercise. And then the pier falls into the water after we spend $320 million we don’t have trying to build it. And look how pathetic this is: How utterly embarrassing. This is the second coming of the Carter presidency, except it’s so much worse this time around. Hamas is holding American citizens hostage just as Iran did, but we aren’t utilizing our military to get them out as Carter attempted to do. Instead, we have the military trying and failing to build infrastructure to support the hostage-takers with food and supplies. And why? So that Biden can turn out the Arab vote in Michigan. Which is a lot pettier and more cynical than Carter, horrific president that he was, could ever have dreamed. The Trump campaign ought to crank out TV spots by the fistful and deploy them liberally in an effort to paint this debacle with the proper color. It’s as clear a case as can be made for just how chaotic and feeble the Biden administration is. 2. The Democrats Surrender in Ohio, No Thanks to National Review Yesterday’s column in this space decrying the weakness and sanctimony of our “friends” at National Review, who opted to lecture the Republican-led Ohio legislature and demand they change that state’s ballot deadline to accommodate the clowns at Democrat National Committee headquarters who set their convention too late to get Biden on the ballot in the Buckeye State, was a little harsh. But I said what needed to be said. The days of good feeling between William F. Buckley conservatives and Daniel Patrick Moynihan liberals who agreed on the basic social goods to be provided in a civilization and merely quibbled as to methods and means? They’re over. Democrats are enemies, not just of Republicans but of Americans in general, and they have to be treated as such. In that light, what I said wasn’t even so rigid. I simply demanded that considerations be extracted from Team Biden and the Democrats if they wanted Ohio’s Republican-led legislature to change the law to bail out their campaign. Instead, the editors at National Review demanded Ohio’s legislators bend over out of a sense of comity and propriety. Good job, guys. You look like real superstars given this: The Democratic National Committee announced on Tuesday that it will nominate President Joe Biden through a “virtual roll call” vote ahead of the August convention to ensure he appears on the Ohio ballot this November. Ohio’s ballot deadline is Aug. 7, two weeks before the DNC planned to hold its official presidential nomination at an in-person convention in Chicago. Frank LaRose, the Republican secretary of state, warned last week that Biden would not be on the state’s ballot unless the state lawmakers moved the ballot access deadline to after the Democratic convention. Days later, the DNC announced it would expedite the nominating process, though no date has yet been announced for the virtual roll call. Oh, you mean the Republicans in the Ohio legislature didn’t actually have to do anything? And that’s state’s RINO governor Mike DeWine and the National Review editors demanding a preemptive surrender did so totally unnecessarily? Shocking. Just for good measure, DNC chair Jaime Harrison poured an extra helping of vinegar on these over-friendly Republican clowns with his statement about the virtual nomination: “Joe Biden will be on the ballot in Ohio and all 50 states, and Ohio Republicans agree. But when the time has come for action, they have failed to act every time, so Democrats will land this plane on our own,” DNC chair Jaime Harrison said in a statement. “Through a virtual roll call, we will ensure that Republicans can’t chip away at our democracy through incompetence or partisan tricks and that Ohioans can exercise their right to vote for the presidential candidate of their choice.” Why would you give this barking cretin any considerations at all? The one illuminating feature of this “virtual roll call” in advance of the Ohio ballot deadline is that it’ll make it even harder for the Democrats to eject Biden if and when he shows himself too enfeebled to carry on. Having the convention within all the ballot deadlines would have afforded a remedy for that not-unlikely possibility; now, with the virtual nomination, it seems impossible even to try to replace him at the convention. It must suck when your efforts at helping your enemies run afoul of those enemies’ actions. But that’s life at National Review these days. 3. Harry Sisson Is Beyond Humiliation, Which Is Probably a Good Thing for Him If you’re on X and you’re a political observer, you’ve probably been subjected to unwanted posts in your feed from an “influencer” named Harry Sisson, a 21-year-old poli sci major at New York University who somehow has managed to build a gigantic following on TikTok and X with posts like this: WOW! Dr. Biden PERFECTLY summed up this election “Donald Trump and Joe Biden are pretty much the same age. This election is about character. My husband Joe has integrity, he’s strong, he’s steady, he’s a leader, smart, and he’s energetic. Trump is chaos.” pic.twitter.com/NM82ZyyZcN — Harry Sisson (@harryjsisson) May 30, 2024 It makes you grieve for the future if this is what’s coming. Team Biden sure does like Sisson, though. Look how cringe this is… Meeting President Biden for the first time! He’s awesome. pic.twitter.com/B3BKYHR3ZL — Harry Sisson (@harryjsisson) May 14, 2024 But Sisson is clearly a plant and his following is without a doubt astroturf. He’s not smart enough or interesting enough to have that many real human beings hanging on things he says. But to the extent there are people who give enough of a damn about him to pay attention, perhaps what happened after Joe Biden’s disastrous speech in Philadelphia. According to Sisson, it was Awesome, You Guys… President Biden had a packed house at his rally in Philadelphia today! People are excited to beat Trump AGAIN and for 4 more years of the Biden administration! pic.twitter.com/mBeI8ZGYc0 — Harry Sisson (@harryjsisson) May 29, 2024 Except … not so much… Harry Sisson posted a picture of Biden’s poorly attended rally in Philly today. When I replied w/ what the rally really looked like, he hid my reply. It would be a shame… pic.twitter.com/q4Fh7deRlF — ThePersistence (@ScottPresler) May 29, 2024 Sisson tried to defend himself: BREAKING: Republicans are PANICKING after President Biden had a HUGE rally in Philadelphia. They’re using this photo, which was taken well before the event started, to mislead the public. Sorry MAGA! Won’t work! pic.twitter.com/26rt0fNNvX — Harry Sisson (@harryjsisson) May 29, 2024 And that didn’t go so well: This Harry Sisson Democrat mouthpiece posting a fake picture of the crowd at Biden’s Philadelphia ‘rally’ today and after getting caught he posts the true picture and laughs saying that was hours earlier. Well Harry shadows from natural light do not lie, look at the flag shadow. pic.twitter.com/KUUOEuYNd9 — John Kitchen (@Johngjkitch) May 30, 2024 Wrecked. Sisson has been paid in excess of $250,000 for propaganda tweets and videos by the Democrat Party, which basically just proves they’re no better with their donors’ money than they are with your tax dollars. How embarrassing for them. 4. A Lesson From Louisiana We’ve got a minor brouhaha going here in Louisiana over the fact that the state education superintendent, a conservative named Cade Brumley, under whose management Louisiana’s school outcomes have climbed several spots in the past few years, just announced a deal with Prager U to serve as a curriculum asset. For his trouble, Brumley was set upon Thursday in a hearing of the state Senate Governmental Affairs Committee. Heads of state agencies here have to go in front of the Senate to be confirmed, and it turns out that SGA is chaired by a Democrat named Cleo Fields. Wait, what? Yes, Louisiana’s Republican-supermajority Senate has committees chaired by Democrats, and Fields is one of them. He’s also the recipient of a brand-new majority-minority congressional district that stretches from Baton Rouge to Shreveport along a thin corridor tracing the path of the Red River. That district was shaped in and voted out of … Fields’s Senate Governmental Affairs Committee. Which has six Republicans among its nine members. Fields did a deal with GOP Gov. Jeff Landry. He sold out the Democrats’ candidate, a bureaucrat named Shawn Wilson who had no chance to win, and tacitly supported Landry in return for those goodies. At one point it was thought Fields, who has a longtime reputation as an utterly corrupt and highly transactional politician with no particular scruples or principles, might be induced to play ball with the GOP and maybe even flip. But Fields this week has gone off on a massive power trip — announcing that he wouldn’t even bring a bill for a constitutional convention, one of Landry’s core priorities in this year’s legislative session, up for a vote in his committee, and now committing political assault on Brumley in an “executive session” so the public couldn’t see what he was doing. The lesson here is that no Democrat should ever have a seat at a Republican table when political power is concerned. Not when they aren’t needed. And in Louisiana, the GOP controls more than two-thirds of both houses. They allowed Fields a seat at the table and he’s overturned the table and made a mess. Never, ever, ever again. Learn, people. 5. Good God, Atlas Is Awful I found myself very, very bored last night and surfing through the streaming services, and Netflix seemed very, very insistent that I watch Atlas, the new sci-fi movie starring Jennifer Lopez. So I did. So you don’t have to. This thing is so horrifically bad it’ll make you want to smash your TV. Lopez is terrible in it, though it’s probably not altogether her fault given how poorly written her character is. The plot is stupid to the point of insulting, the CGI is clunky and implausible, the arc of the movie is stupid … all of it sucks. I’ll never get those two hours back. Don’t do the same to yourself. Audiences have absolutely turned on terrible movies like this. The box-office poison that is Furiosa, starring the lithe and diminutive Anya Taylor-Joy in a role nobody demanded after her story was concluded in Mad Max: Fury Road, is a perfect example. The public has reached its limit of tolerance for stories featuring unsympathetic, poorly written Strong Female Characters in films and TV shows, and those properties are massive losers even when done fairly well — as Furiosa supposedly is. Well, Atlas is not. Lopez spends the whole movie emoting about robots and then ultimately embracing them, and at the end you wish there was a power switch to turn her off. Do better, Netflix. This is how you go out of business. The post Five Quick Things: Pier Pressure appeared first on The American Spectator | USA News and Politics.

To hit zero emissions for the trucking fleet it will cost 1 trillion which really means 10 trillion. US population moving away from blue cities. Tariffs are working, this is why Biden didn’t remove them, if he removed them the people would know. Countries are moving back to gold. The [DS] just played their hand, they found Trump guilty. The shot heard around the world. The people are going to rally around Trump. He just set the precedent, next he needs to remove the President’s immunity and he wants the D’s to push to remove the immunity from Presidents. Once this is all in place all that needs to happen is for the people to vote him in and win the election. Justice will be served.   Economy EVs Strike Again: Trump-Endorsed Bernie Moreno Slams Sherrod Brown as Ohio Loses More Manufacturing Jobs Trump-endorsed Ohio Senate candidate Bernie Moreno is slamming incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) as the state loses more manufacturing jobs to the far left’s radical green energy agenda. Sherrod Brown wants to gaslight Ohioans into thinking he stands up to Biden, but he has voted in lockstep with Biden's radical leftwing green energy & electric car agenda…And now more manufacturing jobs are being shipped to Mexico because of them! https://t.co/gMOtguNsIK — Bernie Moreno (@berniemoreno) May 29, 2024 Sherrod Brown claims he supports workers, but there's nothing pro-worker about supporting Biden's radical Green New Deal agenda, that is killing good-paying Ohio energy jobs. Moreno is among those who have long warned that the left’s pursuit of EVs will “destroy” the auto industry in the United States, and this latest bit of news serves as yet another example. “This irrational move towards electric vehicles – this manic move to electric vehicles is going to destroy the auto industry in America,” Moreno told Breitbart News Washington Bureau Chief Matthew Boyle during an appearance on Breitbart News Saturday in March, noting that the push in that direction is also benefiting other countries over the United States, including China.  Source: breitbart.com New study: Infrastructure needed to support a ‘zero emissions’ electric trucking fleet comes with a $1 trillion price tag “ Here’s the context, from March of this year: On March 29, 2024, Good Friday, Biden’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rolled out its new electric truck mandate, which will require that electric semi-trucks make up an increasing share of manufacturer sales from 2027 through 2032, similar to its recent rule for passenger cars. There’s a new report out though, from Roland Berger and published by the Clean Freight Coalition, which stresses the unaffordability and impracticality of the rules and regulations, as they stand: New Report Pegs Cost of Electrifying U.S. Commercial Truck Fleet at $1 Trillion This nearly $1 trillion expenditure does not account for the cost of purchasing new battery-electric trucks, which, according to market research, can be 2 to 3 times as expensive as their diesel-powered equivalents. That expenditure also doesn’t include increased insurance costs, or any remediation expenses environmental damage done (excess particle-pollution, burning lithium battery storage warehouses, water and soil contamination from mining practices). Here is what Berger concluded: Source: americanthinker.com US Population Growth Shifts Away From Largest Cities  There are 124 cities with a population over 200,000 in the U.S. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s population estimates for last year, more than 90% of the U.S. population growth last year took place outside of its 124 largest cities. Roughly a third of those that lost population were located in New York and California. The three largest cities in the U.S., New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, all lost population again in 2023. Between the three cities, more than 700,000 people have left since the 2020 census. New York is by far the biggest loser at 546,000. That is about 6.2% of its 2020 population. Texas had the most cities with more than 200,000 residents gained, with 14. Several of its suburban cities, such as Frisco, Round Rock, and Denton, grew at jaw-dropping rates of up to 5% in a single year. Texas’ five largest cities, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth, and Austin, all had positive population growth. However, all, with the exception of Fort Worth, had growth rates that were well below the state average. San Antonio and Fort Worth had the absolute most new residents of any U.S. city, with just under 22,000 each. Florida is home to nine cities with more than 200,000. All of those had growth rates at about three times the national average. Its largest city, Jacksonville, will likely be the first city in Florida to exceed 1 million residents later this decade. The individual city numbers are a little misleading for Florida because it has a large number of medium-sized cities. If you have ever driven the Atlantic coast, you know that it is almost a nonstop chain of city after city. Cities in the Carolinas also had impressive growth rates. Charlotte, North Carolina’s largest city, grew by 1.74%. Several of Las Vegas’ suburbs also saw significant growth last year. Ferrara Manufacturing CEO Joseph Ferrara credited tariffs on Chinese imports for helping revive his manufacturing business based in New York City, New York. Those tariffs include those on textile goods from China first imposed by former President Donald Trump and continued by President Joe Biden. “I will impose an across-the-board tariff on foreign-made goods,” Trump has said on the campaign trail. “I will also pass the Trump Reciprocal Trade Act. If China or any other country makes us pay a 100 or 200 percent tariff, we will make them pay a reciprocal tariff of 100 or 200 percent right back.” Source: breitbart.com The U.S. economy grew less than previously thought in the first three months of the year, expanding at an annual pace of just 1.3 percent, revised government data showed Thursday. The downward revision was primarily driven by data showing that consumer spending grew by significantly less than previously estimated. This was the smallest expansion in gross domestic product in almost two years. The prior estimate had the economy growing at a 1.6 percent pace in the first quarter Consumer spending grew an an annualized pace of two percent in the first quarter, the new figures show, down from the previous estimate of 2.5 percent. In the second half of last year, consumer spending had expanded at a better than three percent rate. The slowdown in consumer spending is likely related to inflation, which has pinched household buying power. What’s more, most of the excess savings built up during the pandemic due to stimulus programs and Covid-related economic repression has been spent. The biggest contributors to the slowdown since last year were a widening trade deficit and a smaller increase in business inventories. Could the world be creeping closer to a monetary gold standard?  Steve Forbes sees signs that it is. In a recent article published by Forbes Magazine, Steve Forbes wrote that it may seem hard to believe, but the world is “beginning to lurch toward a gold-based monetary system.” Forbes argued that this disdain for a gold standard is misplaced, pointing out that during the 180 years that the dollar was tied to gold, the U.S. enjoyed the greatest long-term growth in human history without the ravages of price inflation. “Since the greenback’s link to gold was severed, our average historic growth rates have fallen by about a third. Median household income today would be at least $40,000 higher if our traditional pattern of growth for those 180 years had been maintained. Nonetheless, the contumely and scorn for a goldbased monetary system is universal.” This is exactly how a gold standard is supposed to work. It limits the amount the money supply can grow and constrains government spending. Forbes points out four signs that point to a return to some kind of monetary gold standard. 1. Central Bank Gold Buying Central banks have been gobbling up gold at a record pace. Last year, central bank gold buying fell just 45 tons short of 2022’s multi-decade record. According to the World Gold Council, central banks’ net gold purchases totaled 1,037 tons in 2023. It was the second straight year central banks added more than 1,000 tons to their total reserves. Central bank gold buying in 2023 built on the prior record year. Total central bank gold buying in 2022 came in at 1,136 tons. It was the highest level of net purchases on record dating back to 1950, including since the suspension of dollar convertibility into gold in 1971. China, India, Russia, Turkey, and other emerging market banks have driven this buying spree. “These countries are reacting to growing doubts about the long-term value of the dollar, which in turn is a symptom of the perceived decline of the United States,” Forbes wrote. 2. The Rise of Cryptocurrencies Forbes argues that the growing interest in crypto is a “high-tech cry for help in the face of increasingly unreliable fiat currencies.” 3. The Binge of Debt Creation As already noted, fiat money systems incentivize debt. We see this playing out today with government, corporate, and personal debt at record levels. Much of the United States’s economic growth over the last 18 months has been put on credit cards. Debt isn’t just a problem in the U.S. Global debt has grown to $300 trillion, three times global GDP. This is unsustainable. Forbes argues that debt “will inevitably kindle crises that cannot be easily extinguished.” 4. The Rise of BRICS BRICS is an economic cooperation bloc originally made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. As of Jan. 1, 2024, the bloc expanded to include Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Iran, and Ethiopia. More than 40 other nations have expressed interest in BRICS membership. BRICS countries have floated the idea of an alternative currency to compete with the dollar, along with new payment systems that would dent U.S. economic hegemony. Meanwhile, India is experimenting with gold-based government bonds. The Impact of a Gold Standard A gold standard would drive the price of gold significantly higher. NYC hotel rates reach record highs as city fills rooms with illegal immigrants The average price for a hotel room in the Big Apple is now over $300 per night New York City hotel prices have reached an all-time high due in large part to the unprecedented influx of illegal immigrants arriving from the southern border. The city turned to hotels to house the immigrants, many of which are paid to house the immigrants. As of late 2023, the average price for a one-night stay at a hotel in the Big Apple was over $300, an increase of nearly 10 percent over the previous year. While that has dipped slightly over the first few months of 2024, the summer tourism season is expected to bring with it another jump in prices. source: thepostmillenial.com Biden’s Open Borders Crisis: Two Men Slip Into US Carrying Dozens of Guns, Abandon Weapons and Escape Back to Canada Border Patrol agents seized two backpacks filled with 65 handguns, 65 pistol magazines, two rifles, a silencer and two rifle magazines near the US-Canadian border. But according to one top House Democrat, the Department of Justice still has card it can play in order to force both Alito and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas — whose wife, Ginni Thomas, has also showed solidarity with the insurrectionist cause — to recuse themselves. In a New York Times op-ed, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Maryland), who is the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, wrote that Attorney General Merrick Garland’s DOJ and several other top DOJ officials could continue to press the issue with the rest of the Court. He argued that Garland, in conjunction with the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, an appointed special counsel and Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar (the DOJ official tasked with making arguments before the Supreme Court) “can petition the other seven justices to require Justices Alito and Thomas to recuse themselves not as a matter of grace but as a matter of law.” “The Justice Department and Attorney General Merrick Garland can invoke two powerful textual authorities for this motion: the Constitution of the United States, specifically the due process clause, and the federal statute mandating judicial disqualification for questionable impartiality,” Raskin wrote, naming the specific statute in federal code. “The Constitution has come into play in several recent Supreme Court decisions striking down rulings by stubborn judges in lower courts whose political impartiality has been reasonably questioned but who threw caution to the wind to hear a case anyway.” “This statute requires potentially biased judges throughout the federal system to recuse themselves at the start of the process to avoid judicial unfairness and embarrassing controversies and reversals,” he continued. “This recusal statute, if triggered, is not a friendly suggestion.
