A sexual assault survivor gave an inside look at living in a female prison with male criminals who say they identify as transgender in a new documentary released Tuesday by the Independent Women’s Forum, a conservative group. The six-minute documentary, part of Independent Women’s Forum’s “Cruel & Unusual Punishment: The Male Takeover of Female Prisons” series, focuses on the story of Evelyn Valiente, a sexual assault survivor and former inmate at the Central California Women’s Facility. Valiente, who uses a pseudonym to protect her identity, was forced to share a housing unit with a male inmate who said he identified as a woman while serving time for killing someone in a shooting. “At first I thought it was going to be OK [but] it didn’t take long before this one particular individual was manipulative, calculating, vindictive, and always looking and seeking to do harm to another person,” Valiente said of the “trans” inmate, who had a history of sex crime convictions. In 2020, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, signed legislation requiring the state’s prison system to house inmates based on their gender identity and not their biological sex. Under the law, corrections officers are required to ask inmates privately how they identify and then work to house them accordingly. Before her time in prison, Valiente had been sexually assaulted. She said that being in the same housing unit as an individual who had been convicted of sex crimes, as well as other men, made it “scary” not only for her but for many other women who had “come from very abusive backgrounds.” “It’s a lot of walking in trauma,” Valiente said. WATCH: Andrea Mew, storytelling manager for Independent Women’s Forum and co-producer of the documentary series, told the Daily Caller News Foundation that although California lawmakers claimed that the transgender inmate bill was about keeping inmates safe, the law actually further victimized women in prison who often have been abused previously. “It’s really interesting that California, at the same time that they are focusing on being all about rehabilitation, are subjecting women to being retraumatized by a lot of their personal triggers,” Mew said. “Many women who are in prison are victims of sexual assault, emotional abuse, physical abuse, and having men in their spaces can be a very big trigger for them. At the same time, it’s allowing violent male criminals to have unbridled access to, in many cases, the thing that got them there in the first place.” Currently, five states—Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, California, and New Jersey—as well as New York City have passed laws allowing men who say they identify as women to be housed in women’s prisons. However, other states, such as Wisconsin, reportedly moved biologically male offenders who say they identify as transgender into all-female facilities despite their violent criminal histories. In September 2023, a female inmate sued the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility in New Jersey after she said she was assaulted in prison by a male inmate identifying as transgender. Another female inmate from New York City filed a lawsuit in January, claiming that a prison official instructed a male inmate who reportedly sexually assaulted her to say he identified as transgender so he could have “access to female inmates.” Mew said she and co-producer Kelsey Bolar wanted viewers to imagine how they would feel if someone they loved in prison was forced to share a cell or a housing unit with a transgender inmate who had a history of violence. “People need to put themselves in the shoes of people who are in prison and just imagine yourself in there, imagine your own daughter in there,” Mew said. “There are a lot of things that could happen that could get you into prison that are complete accidents, so imagine yourself or your own daughter is in that sort of accident. Put yourself in the shoes of the person there and think about how it would feel if you’re being physically, emotionally, and, in some cases as we’ve seen, sexually threatened by male criminals while you’re just trying to do your time and get home.” The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment. Missouri police said that a woman drowned one of her children and shot another child before walking into a police station and confessing.The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department said that 36-year-old Ashley Parmeley appeared to be wearing wet clothing when she walked into the Festus Police Department on Tuesday morning. She allegedly said that she had killed her two children. Police found a girl injured in the woman's car in the parking lot and attempted life-saving measures before declaring the 9-year-old dead at the scene. Police believe the child was shot while the car was in St. Francois County near Highway E. 'He said, 'Sheriff, this is a tough one.''Investigators said they found her 2-year-old son apparently drowned at the Timber Creek Resort in the rural part of Festus. They again attempted life-saving measures, but he was declared dead as well. Police were able to find a third child, a relative, alive. Parmely was taken into custody and charged in connection with the death of her son, but the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said they were going to ask her to be charged in the death of her daughter as well. She was booked into the Jefferson County Jail without bond. Officials had not released the names of the victims, but a letter sent from Festus schools confirmed the identify of the 9-year-old girl. “It is with sadness and heavy hearts that the Festus R-VI School District can confirm that Scarlet Parmeley, who was the 9-year-old victim of today’s tragic events, had just successfully completed 3rd grade at Festus Elementary School," the letter read. "Scarlet’s teachers and administrators say she was a bubbly, energetic, and trustworthy student," they continued. "They say she was caring and compassionate, eager to please, with a good sense of humor. She could make friends with anyone and she was very much looking forward to moving to the 4th grade when classes resume in August."KMOV-TV reported that Parmely had blacked out her profile on social media before the alleged murders and also posted an image in support of the Second Amendment. "So many people in our community will be impacted by this. I would ask for additional prayers tonight," said Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak in a media briefing. "I spoke with one of the officers guarding the crime scene out here earlier, and he said, 'Sheriff, this is a tough one.'" Festus is a suburb of St. Louis with a population of about 12,000 residents. For the most part, Netflix is a set-it-and-forget-it service. Once you choose a plan and set up your account, all you really have to do is start streaming shows and movies. The algorithm will begin to adjust to your taste, and before long, your home page will be filled with content just for you. But if you haven't dug any deeper than the Netflix home page, you're missing out on a ton of useful and interesting settings that can seriously improve the app. Below, we've gathered 11 Netflix settings that will allow you to customize your account in ways that you might not have even known were possible. 1. Set the maturity rating for each profile Change the maturity rating and set viewing restrictions on Netflix. Image source: Netflix If you have little ones in your house, you probably don't want them to have access to R-rated movies and TV-MA shows. Under Viewing Restrictions, you can decide precisely how mature you want the content available to any profile on your account to be. 2. Block specific titles from appearing In a similar vein, you can block specific titles from appearing on your profile by choosing them from the Title Restrictions menu in Viewing Restrictions. If there's a specific show or movie you never want to see again, just add it here to eliminate it for good. 3. Turn off annoying Netflix emails and texts Netflix sends out emails, texts, and push notifications. Image source: Netflix If you appreciate Netflix's occasional email and text blasts to let you know about new releases, you can skip this one. If they irritate you to no end, you should probably turn them off. The good news is that doing so is incredibly easy. Head to Notification Settings and then choose which of the notifications you want to manage. Hit the toggles to turn them on or off. 4. Change the look of your subtitles Netflix lets you change the appearance of subtitles. Image source: Netflix One of Netflix's greatest strengths is the breadth of international content available to everyone who uses the service, but not everyone loves reading subtitles. But what if those subtitles were easier to read? It turns out you can adjust the appearance of subtitles fairly drastically. You can pick a font, make the subtitles bigger or smaller, choose a background color, and even change the look and color of the shadow behind the subtitles. 5. Reduce Netflix's motion transitions Netflix looks sleeker than ever in 2024, but not everyone is a fan of the changes the company has made to its user interface over the years. Personally, I can't stand all of the new animation effects, so I went to the Settings menu and reduced them (because you cannot fully turn them off). It's made for a much less visually overwhelming experience. 6. Invite extra members to Netflix Netflix lets you add extra members for $7.99/month. Image source: Netflix Netflix's crackdown on password sharing still stings, but we all have to live with it now. While it's no longer free to share your account with someone living outside of your household, you can pay an extra $7.99 per month to give your friend or family member their own Netflix account with the same video and audio quality as your account. They can only have one profile and watch on one device at a time, but it's cheaper than the Standard plan. 7. Sign old devices out of your account I recently returned from an international trip, and I just remembered that I logged into my Netflix account on a Google Chromecast in a hotel. Sure enough, when I checked in Manage Account Access, I was still logged in, so I hit the "Sign Out" button. It's worth checking this page every few months just to be sure you know where you account is being used. 8. Stop previews from playing automatically In my opinion, one of the most important Netflix settings is the ability to turn off all the automatic previews. I hate when I'm trying to find something to watch but linger just a millisecond too long on a tile and the preview starts blasting through my speakers. If you're in the same boat, go to Playback Settings and uncheck the "Autoplay previews" box. 9. Change your ratings for content I don't get much use out of Netflix's ratings system, but I'm sure plenty of you do. If so, there's a chance that you've accidentally liked something that you meant to dislike, or vice versa, at some point. If you go to your Viewing Activity settings and click on "Rating" at the top of the page, you can see all of your ratings and change them as you see fit. 10. Avoid endless scrolling with Downloads for You With so much choice available on Netflix, decision fatigue is inevitable. Eventually, you'll get so sick of searching for the perfect show or movie that you'll give up and open TikTok instead. That's why I like to use the Downloads for You in the Smart Downloads settings on the Netflix mobile app. Netflix picks content for me, so I don't have to do the work myself. 11. Participate in tests of new Netflix features Netflix allows users to test new features. Image source: Netflix Every few months, you might notice a change to the look or feel of the Netflix app. The company is always tweaking the user experience, but if you want to see what is in the works before other users, you can manually sign up to be included in previews and tests.
