The Democratic National Committee (DNC) plans to virtually nominate Joe Biden for president to avoid missing Ohio’s nomination deadline. “DNC Chair Jaime Harrison announced Democrats would be holding a virtual roll call to ensure Biden gets on the ballot in all 50 states,” The Hill reports. The announcement follows the GOP-controlled state Legislature failing to pass a fix that would allow Joe Biden to appear on the ballot. However, Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican, called for a special session of the state Legislature to ensure Joe Biden is on the ballot in the 2024 presidential election. The Democratic National Convention, where the party typically nominates its candidates for president and vice president, is scheduled approximately two weeks after Ohio’s August 7th deadline. “Joe Biden will be on the ballot in Ohio and all 50 states, and Ohio Republicans agree. But when the time has come for action, they have failed to act every time, so Democrats will land this plane on our own,” Harrison said. All DNC members will then vote on the resolution in the following weeks and, once adopted, a virtual nomination process can proceed. Party officials are likening the approach to the virtual convention held in 2020 during the pandemic. “Once again, Republican politicians at the statehouse are playing politics with our democracy by trying to prevent Ohio voters from choosing who they want to be president, but Democrats will not trade Ohioans’ ability to hold their government accountable for presidential ballot access,” Liz Walters, the Ohio Democratic Party chair, said in a statement. Nickie Antonio, the Democratic leader in the Ohio Senate, announced the change in strategy at a news conference Tuesday. “The first thing we’ve done is we have asked the Biden campaign to issue a statement, which they will do today, assuring the people in the state of Ohio that Joe Biden will be on the ballot because they are going to go in an alternative direction to find a solution that does not include the Ohio Legislature,” Antonio said. Democrats needed to certify Biden by Aug. 7 in order to make the Ohio ballot, but the Democratic National Convention kicks off beginning Aug. 19. Ohio legislators struggled to reach a legislative fix; Senate Republicans passed a bill that would allow a one-time fix that would move the certification deadline back so Democrats could make it. But it was also paired with a provision that would ban foreign contributions in ballot initiatives, which Democrats rejected. The state House had worked on a more permanent solution that would change the certification deadline, but ultimately neither of those bills was officially voted on in the lower chamber.

A horrific explosion caused extensive damage to a Chase Bank in downtown Youngstown, Ohio. Emergency crews responded to the scene after reports of a gas explosion in the 13-story building. “Chase Bank occupies the first floor of the building, but the 13-story building also houses numerous apartments,” 21 News noted. Federal Street. Crews evacuated people from the top floors, where there are apartments. Chase Bank is located at the bottom of the building. A representative of Chase Bank said they are in contact with local officials to check on the safety of everyone in the building, and after that, they will assess the damage. Those in the area reported hearing a loud boom followed by smoke and the smell of gas. “I heard the boom, and I looked up and I could see dark smoke coming out of the side of the Chase Bank building… but it was such a really strong, strong boom, you know, I blurted out, “Oh my God,’” said Debora Flora, executive director of Mahoning County Land Bank who works downtown. Seven people are receiving treatment related to the explosion at Mercy Health, with one patient in critical condition, a Mercy Health spokesperson confirmed. “Youngstown fire crews are responding to a possible explosion at Chase bank in the Realty building downtown. The Mahoning County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has taken over the scene. Gas was reported to still be coming from the area, but we’re told gas has been shut off in the building. Youngstown State University has issued a Penguin Alert revealing that University Police are monitoring the situation. However, the University itself is not impacted by the explosion at this time. All county buildings have closed as a result of the explosion and the Board of Elections has stopped early voting. The Youngstown City School Board has also canceled its Tuesday night meeting. Downtown businesses like The Federal restaurant are closing for the day for safety Drivers are asked to avoid the area.
