An Ohio mother has been sentenced to prison after her 4-year-old diabetic daughter died from being mainly fed a diet of baby bottles filled with Mountain Dew.Tamara Banks, 41, was sentenced on Friday to at least nine years in prison for the young girl's death and up to 13 and a half years. Banks, of Clermont County, had pleaded guilty in March to involuntary manslaughter for the death of her daughter – Karmity Hoeb.Karmity's father, 53-year-old Christopher Hoeb, also pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. He is set to be sentenced in June.Karmity was found unresponsive on Jan. 21, 2022. The couple called 911 and the girl was rushed to the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.The 4-year-old girl was declared to be brain dead and died four days later after being taken off life support.Karmity died in 2022 of a diabetes-related brain injury.The Clermont County coroner determined the girl's cause of death was diabetic ketoacidosis. Prosecutors said the girl's condition "was left undiagnosed and untreated over a long period of time."Dr. Chris Peltier – President of the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics – told WCPO-TV, "Diabetic ketoacidosis, or DKA, is an extreme complication of untreated diabetes."Prosecutors claimed Banks and Hoeb mostly fed their daughter a baby bottle that was filled with baby formula and Mountain Dew soda. Prosecutors noted that the 4-year-old girl should have been weaned off bottles long before her death. A 20-ounce bottle of Mountain Dew reportedly contains 77 grams of sugar.WXIX-TV previously reported the girl's teeth had rotted out and she had almost none left.Karmity suffered from a "serious medical issue" days before her death, but her parents failed to call for help or take her to the hospital, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors said Karmity suffered neglect, child abuse, denied proper nutrition, lacked medical care, and there was no evidence that she had been taken to a dentist in her short life. Clermont County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Clay Tharp told the Cincinnati Enquirer, "This is one of the most tragic cases I have ever encountered."Tharp also pointed out, "This child did not have to die."Our guardian angel nowKarmity – nicknamed "Boogie" – "loved to be silly" and "loved looking at herself in the mirror because she knew how beautiful and special she was.""Each day she woke up full of joy and love," the girl's obituary read. A mayor in California said that 94% of homeless people refuse to accept help because of their issues with addiction and mental illness. Vista Mayor John Franklin made the comments in an interview with KGTV-TV about the worsening homeless crisis in California. "Some of them we've asked twenty times and developed relationships with," Franklin said. "And we've asked them if they would come and accept a safe warm bed here, three hot meals a day, a hot shower, clean clothes, and unfortunately, because of mental illness and addiction, the answer is, 'We don't want to come.'" 'I know it's true. I believe it's true, but it is shocking.' A point-in-time count of the homeless population found that the city only had about 170 homeless people, but the figure represents almost double the number from last year when it was only 88 people. The report found similar increases in nearby regions of San Diego County, including 87% in Carlsbad, 69% in Encinitas, 32% in Escondido, and 25% in Oceanside. Three other cities reported a slight decline in the homeless population. Hannah Gailey, executive director of the nonprofit Retread Housing Services, told KGTV that the report matches her experience."I know it's true. I believe it's true, but it is shocking to me that so many people have become homeless in the last year," she said. Gailey runs a center focused on helping homeless people in Encinitas and Vista with millions of dollars of state funds. The organization supports 48 beds and provides services to help homeless people get out of addiction and find long-term housing. "I think people would be surprised by how ordinary their unhoused neighbors are," Gailey added. "That it is not always extraordinary circumstances that leave people unsheltered." KGTV interviewed one of the homeless men who was living at the center after he said health issues made him lose his residence. "The only thing I need is to go back to work and then that's it, that's what I need, to get to 100% with my health issue," said Gilbert Sanchez. Sanchez worked as an independent handyman but needed surgery after hurting his back. After the surgery he was unable to work and became homeless. Franklin posted a video of the KGTV news report on his YouTube channel. He says that the city has cleaned up hundreds of encampments while providing services to homeless people who are willing to accept them. Vista is a city of about 99k residents located about seven miles from the Pacific Ocean in northern San Diego County. The median single family home in Vista sells for about $886k according to Zillow. YouTube's war on adblockers has been well-documented over the last several months, but it's taken a frustrating new twist for users still attempting to block ads on the popular video platform. According to reports from Reddit (via 9to5Google), YouTube's latest tactic appears to be forcing videos to skip to the end right away when a user has an adblocker enabled. Based on several comments, YouTube videos are randomly skipping to the end as soon as they load. When the users try to replay the video, it skips to the end again. Clicking at a random point in the video timeline also causes the video to load infinitely. "Yes, this is exactly my issue. They're making this algorithm where if they detect an adblocker, it causes this to happen," The-Kabster-Cow speculates. "It's to make it seem like some sort of bug caused by the adblocker, but it's definitely intentional by [YouTube], since they know they aren't allowed to directly tell us to stop using the adblocker." There's no proof that this is what's happening, but the problem is widespread enough that it's clearly either a legitimate bug or a fresh attempt by YouTube to eliminate ad blocking. That said, many users claim that the video skipping still happens after they turn off or pause their adblocker, so there might actually be something an issue behind the scenes. It's worth remembering that a bug introduced in an Adblock Plus update was mistaken for a YouTube scheme to punish users blocking ads earlier this year. Adblock Plus fixed the bug in version 3.22.1. We should probably wait to see if this is a similar occurrence.
