The clips released in the past were either vague, full of vibes but lacking in plot details, or laid out actual puzzles that they hoped people would work to solve. Until today! Well, kinda. The latest trailer for Longlegs gives us details on the character Maika Monroe is playing, as well as very strong clues (and maybe even a glimpse) of Nicholas Cage’s role in the film. The trailer reveals that Monroe’s character is a “lady FBI agent” who admits to a child that it’s scary to be in her profession. She appears to have been called in to a case with a lot of dead bodies, and examines a letter left with the corpses that includes a coded language we’ve seen in previous marketing materials, as well as the word “LONGLEGS.” The trailer also includes Monroe researching into the nine circles of hell and having her tell her FBI boss that the murderer in question (aka Nicolas Cage) will kill again. We also hear Cage’s warped voice in the trailer telling Monroe, presumably (though not confirmed), that he knows she’s not afraid of the dark, because she is the dark. That setup is reminding me a bit of Silence of the Lambs, but this is clearly a different beast, in part because Cage’s serial killer is never behind bars. The trailer also suggests that we’ll see atrocities unfold across different-but-connected timelines, which is disturbingly intriguing. Longlegs is from writer-director Osgood Perkins. A federal judge temporarily blocked the Biden administration from fully enforcing a gun background check rule Sunday night. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the rule covering background checks for firearms purchases April 10, claiming it was based on bipartisan legislation passed in the wake of a deadly school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. United States District Judge Matthew J. Kacsmaryk of the Northern District of Texas issued a temporary restraining order blocking the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from enforcing the rule against the state of Texas and certain gun organizations until June 2. The Supreme Court declined Monday to consider a case challenging a Maryland school district policy that hides information from parents about their child’s “gender identity.” Under the Montgomery County Board of Education’s guidelines, parents deemed “unsupportive” will not be told if their child is undergoing a “gender transition” at school, according to court filings. The justices declined to hear an appeal by three parents who challenged the plan, leaving in place a lower court ruling that found they did not have standing to challenge the policy. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled last August that the parents did not have standing because their own children were not undergoing or considering a gender transition. “Absent an injury that creates standing, federal courts lack the power to address the parents’ objections to the Guidelines,” the majority held. “That does not mean their objections are invalid.” Judge Paul Niemeyer, an appointee of President George H.W. Bush, wrote in a dissent that the majority’s decision was “unnecessarily subjecting the Parents by default to a mandatory policy that pulls the discussion of gender issues from the family circle to the public schools without any avenue of redress by the Parents,” adding: The majority’s conclusion is, in the circumstances of this case, an unfortunate abdication of judicial duty with respect to a very important constitutional issue that is directly harming and will likely continue to harm the Parents in this case by usurping their constitutionally protected role. The parents told the Supreme Court in their November petition that the issue was “not going away.” “Schools across the country over the past few years have adopted policies similar to that involved here that require school personnel to hide from parents—lying, if need be—that the school is assisting their child to transition gender at school,” they wrote.
