Wegovy, an injectable prescription weight loss drug, can produce effective results that help patients keep weight off for up to four years, a new study suggests. The drug may also offer heart protection benefits for overweight and obese patients who had heart disease before starting the treatment.The drug, which is developed by Novo Nordisk, a global healthcare company based in Denmark, is based on a human hormone called glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), which plays a role in regulating our appetites and our blood sugar levels. In recent years, various studies have explored the role GLP-1 agonists, drugs that mimic the effects of this hormone, can have on obesity and conditions like type-2 diabetes.Wegovy’s active ingredient, a molecule called semaglutide, is another example of a GLP-1 mimic. It acts on the parts of our brains associated with hunger and fullness. Semaglutide also lowers blood sugar levels by promoting the release of insulin when levels are already high.Wegovy has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and has been approved by the UK's NHS to be used alongside diet and physical activity designed to manage excess weight and obesity.The new analysis comes from the longest clinical trial of the drug to date, the results of which were presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Venice this week.The results add to the growing body of evidence suggesting that a weekly injection of Wegovy can have a range of health benefits. This, researchers hope, will help Novo Nordisk’s case for insurers and governments to cover the costs of this expensive but effective drug.The data was collected from the SELECT (Semaglutide Effects on Heart Disease and Stroke in Patients with Overweight or Obesity) trial, which was designed to examine the drug’s impact on cardiovascular health. The trial – a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial – studied patients with established cardiovascular disease who were also overweight or obese but did not have diabetes.This resulted in 17,604 participants from 41 countries who were studied over four years. Around 72 percent of the participants were male, 84 percent were white, and the average age was around 62 years. Those who took part were given either semaglutide or a placebo for the trial’s duration.In 2023, the researchers published the trial’s preliminary results, which showed that the drug could reduce participant’s risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart disease related deaths by 20 percent for just over three years.In this latest analysis, those who took semaglutide saw their weight gradually drop by 10 percent, on average, over the first 65 weeks of the trial. Although it then plateaued, the initial loss remained for the 208 weeks of follow-ups. In comparison, those in the placebo group only lost 1.5 percent weight, which indicates an 8.7 percent treatment difference.“Our long-term analysis of semaglutide establishes that clinically relevant weight loss can be sustained for up to four years in a geographically and racially diverse population of adults with overweight and obesity but not diabetes,” Professor Donna Ryan, a professor at Pennington Biomedical Research Centre in New Orleans who led the study, explained in a statement.“This degree of weight loss in such a large and diverse population suggests that it may be possible to impact the public health burden of multiple obesity-related illnesses. While our trial focused on cardiovascular events, many other chronic diseases including several types of cancer, osteoarthritis, and anxiety and depression would benefit from effective weight management.”There were no unexpected safety outcomes with semaglutide during the SELECT trial. The number of people who did experience severe adverse events was actually lower in the semaglutide group than in the placebo group and was mostly driven by differences in cardiovascular disorders.However, semaglutide does not agree with everyone. Some people had to discontinue the trial as the escalation in the dose of the drug led to nausea and diarrhea.In a second study, researchers examined the relationship between weight measures at baseline and changes in weight during the study with cardiovascular outcomes. This study found that patients in the trial experienced heart benefits from taking the drug, regardless of their weight when they started on semaglutide and regardless of how much weight they lost.In essence, even patients with relatively mild levels of obesity or who only lose a modest amount of weight may experience improved cardiovascular outcomes.“These findings have important clinical implications,” Professor John Deanfield from University College London added. “Around half of the patients that I see in my cardiovascular practice have levels of weight equivalent to those in the SELECT trial and are likely to derive benefit from taking Semaglutide on top of their usual level of guideline directed care.“Our findings show that the magnitude of this treatment effect with semaglutide is independent of the amount of weight lost, suggesting that the drug has other actions which lower cardiovascular risk beyond reducing unhealthy body fat.”These alternative mechanisms could include positive influences on blood pressure, blood sugar, or inflammation. They may also have a direct impact on the heart muscles and blood vessels, or maybe a combination of one or more of them.Despite these significant results, it is important to stress that the findings from the SELECT trial should not be generalized to suggest that all adults who are overweight and have obesity will have the same outcomes. Even though the trial included a large and diverse population, it is not enough to rule out different results.The first paper is published in Nature Medicine.

Scientists have detected “significant concentrations” of microplastics in the testicles of both humans and dogs. Worryingly, they also found some evidence that certain forms of microplastic might be having a damaging impact on sperm count. Researchers at the University of New Mexico looked for microplastics in 47 canine and 23 human testes taken during autopsies – they found microplastics in every single individual. The average concentration of microplastics in the dogs’ testicular tissue was 122.63 micrograms per gram of tissue, while concentrations in human testicular tissue were 328.44 micrograms per gram.“At the beginning, I doubted whether microplastics could penetrate the reproductive system. When I first received the results for dogs I was surprised. I was even more surprised when I received the results for humans,” Xiaozhong “John” Yu, lead author of the study and a professor at the University of New Mexico College of Nursing, said in a statement. The researchers weren’t able to count the sperm in the human samples due to the way they had been chemically preserved, but they were able to do so with the canine samples. This revealed that higher levels of PVC, the world's third-most widely produced synthetic polymer of plastic, in the tissue were correlated with a lower sperm count. “PVC can release a lot of chemicals that interfere with spermatogenesis and it contains chemicals that cause endocrine disruption,” Yu explained. Microplastics are tiny plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in size, originating from the breakdown of larger plastic debris or from products containing microbeads, such as cosmetics. They are prevalent in the environment – from the oceans and soil, to rain and even the air – plus there’s a wealth of evidence suggesting they are pervasive in the bodies of humans. Along with coming into contact with microplastics in the surrounding environment, there are also significant quantities of the stuff in our food.This relatively new form of pollution caught the attention of Yu, who studies the impact of various environmental factors on the human reproductive system. Much of his work has focused on how pollutants, such as heavy metals and pesticides, are impacting sperm cell production and contributing to the global decline in sperm count in recent years.After hearing that microplastics had been found in placenta tissue, he and his team started to wonder whether a similar problem was occurring in testicles. They also have started to question whether microplastics might have something to do with the recent global decline in sperm count.Yu said: “We have a lot of unknowns. We need to really look at what the potential long-term effect [could be]. Are microplastics one of the factors contributing to this decline?”“We don’t want to scare people,” he added. “We want to scientifically provide the data and make people aware there are a lot of microplastics. We can make our own choices to better avoid exposures, change our lifestyle and change our behavior.”The study is published in the journal Toxicological Sciences.

The unfolding climate crisis puts humanity in danger – and usually, the ones who have contributed the least to it face the harshest consequences. The health impacts of the crisis have become more and more evident, and it seems that conditions that affect the brain are likely to be affected by the changing climate as well.Researchers behind a new study conducted a review of 332 papers from 1968 to 2023. Their work shows that the likely negative impact of climate change on neurological health is expected to be substantial. They considered 19 nervous conditions including stroke, migraine, Alzheimer’s, meningitis, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis. They also looked at common psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia.Weather changes induced by the climate crisis, more extreme events such as heat waves, and frost spells accentuate the risk factors and characteristics that make those conditions so dangerous. They found that incidence, hospital admissions, and mortality risk for many mental health disorders seem to be associated with increased ambient temperature, daily fluctuations in temperature, or extreme hot and cold temperatures.“There is clear evidence for an impact of the climate on some brain conditions, especially stroke and infections of the nervous system,” lead author Professor Sanjay Sisodiya, from University College London, said in a statement.“The climatic variation that was shown to have an effect on brain diseases included extremes of temperature (both low and high), and greater temperature variation throughout the course of day – especially when these measures were seasonally unusual. Nighttime temperatures may be particularly important, as higher temperatures through the night can disrupt sleep. Poor sleep is known to aggravate a number of brain conditions.”Another factor of concern is that people with mental or neurological conditions might not have adequate support and may have reduced capabilities to seek help in worsening environmental conditions. This is particularly true in people with dementia.The team stresses the importance of keeping the work up to date. The present state of the climate crisis is concerning enough, and the future might look significantly worse if political leaders do not take a decisive stand. “This work is taking place against a worrying worsening of climatic conditions and it will need to remain agile and dynamic if it is to generate information that is of use to both individuals and organisations,” Professor Sisodiya added. “Moreover, there are few studies estimating health consequences on brain diseases under future climate scenarios, making forward planning challenging.”“The whole concept of climate anxiety is an added, potentially weighty, influence: many brain conditions are associated with higher risk of psychiatric disorders, including anxiety, and such multimorbidities can further complicate impacts of climate change and the adaptations necessary to preserve health. But there are actions we can and should take now.”The paper is published in the journal Lancet Neurology.

Last night, ABC's Grey's Anatomy described the state of Texas as dangerous for its opposition to trans mutilation of minors. In the episode, "Blood, Sweat and Tears," on Thursday, a "trans" child named "Caroline" flies all the way from Texas to Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital in Seattle for neurosurgery on a tumor. She and her mother consider Texas too hostile to trust doctors there. Caroline's family knows Dr. Monica Beltran (Natalie Morales), one of Grey-Sloan's doctors, because Beltran previously practiced in Texas. Caroline needs surgery on a neurofibroma, which is "a spontaneous growth in the nerve tissue" that can damage the nerve. The surgery itself does not relate to the child's trans identity, but the mother and child are uncomfortable with Texas doctors operating on her for anything at all. Last year, Texas banned puberty blockers, hormone "therapy" and other medicalized transgender harm against minors. During a conversation between Beltran and her colleague, Dr. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), Beltran describes Texas as a place where transgender children fear for their lives. Shepherd: They came a long way to see you. That must be flattering.  Beltran: It's enraging. Caroline shouldn't have to travel to see a doctor who treats her with respect.  Shepherd: You didn't want to stay in Texas, try to help more kids there?  Beltran: You know, as much as I hate it, I think maybe it is safer for them to come see me here. I mean, it's just gotten so hostile. [ Sighs ] Forget the awkward stares and the micro-aggressions. One family was talking about putting a bulletproof vest on their son, just to come see me, because he's trans.  Shepherd: That is... The PGA Tour's top golfer and reigning champion of the Masters was arrested and charged outside the course entrance to the PGA Championship. The charges included felony assault of a police officer.Scottie Scheffler, the number one-ranked golfer in the world, was arrested in a bizarre incident after refusing to stop at the scene of an accident near the entrance of the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. An ESPN reporter named Jeff Darlington witnessed the incident and said that Scheffler was detained after a "misunderstanding with traffic flow led to his attempt to drive past a police officer into Valhalla Golf Club."The traffic outside the golf course was stopped because a man was hit and killed by a shuttle bus at around 5 a.m. ET. The PGA Tour announced it would be delaying tee times due to "an accident near the course."'Right now, he's going to jail, and there's nothing you can do about it.'According to Darlington, Scheffler was trying to drive around the crash scene on the median, and when a police officer told him to stop, he continued to drive for another 10-20 yards toward the Valhalla Golf Club entrance.A cop attached himself to the side of Scheffler's car, an ESPN report described, and the officer then yelled at the golfer."The police officer then began to scream at Scheffler to get out of the car. When Scheffler exited the vehicle, the officer shoved Scheffler against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs. Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, 28, gave a commencement speech last weekend at Benedictine College wherein he dared to articulate beliefs anchored in the millenniums-old moral teachings of the Catholic Church, now codified in the Catechism and followed by millions of Americans nationwide. The three-time Super Bowl champ drew the ire of radicals in the liberal media and political establishment for doing so — for echoing the late Pope John Paul II in noting that "abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for the degenerate cultural values and media all stem from pervasiveness of disorder." The kicker further enraged leftists by celebrating the institution of marriage, the vocation of motherhood, the link between male weakness and cultural dysfunction, the sinfulness of pride and Pride month, and by highlighting the incompatibility of President Joe Biden's professed faith and his views on abortion. After all, the Catholic Church has made clear that abortion "is gravely contrary to the moral law"; "formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense" carrying the canonical penalty of excommunication; and Catholic political leaders have an obligation to stand up for the rights of the unborn. Besides upsetting talking heads on cable news shows, Butker's expression of Catholic views at a Catholic school evidently enraged the person running Kansas City's social media accounts. Doxxed Kansas City's X account posted, "Just a reminder that Harrision Butker lives in ...," then provided the location where the kicker could be found. This tweet, which was posted at 7:41 p.m. on Wednesday, qualifies as textbook "doxxing," defined as the public identification or publication "of private information about (someone) especially as a form of punishment or revenge." There was a swift backlash against the city online as it was widely understood this tweet amounted to an effort to punish and possibly endanger Butker over his opinions. 'Use of government social media to retaliate against an individual based on their religious beliefs amounts to discriminatory behavior that is not tolerated under our Constitution or Missouri statute.' Matthew Peterson, editor in chief at Blaze News, noted, "If our cities are revealing private information about the residents they are supposed to be serving simply because local government officials disagree with their political views and statements, that's a call to action. Solving this problem will take a lot more than complaining on the internet. Americans need to band together and work locally to hold their local governments accountable." Just hours later, at 9:21 p.m., the Kansas City account posted, "We apologies [sic] for our previous tweet. It was shared in error." That tweet ostensibly served to draw further attention to the now-deleted doxxing effort, prompting even more outrage. Catholic conservative commentator Michael Knowles wrote, "@KansasCity: not only criminal but also illiterate." Some social media users have suggested that the author of the tweet may have been Andrea Watts, whose LinkedIn profile similarly contained a rather glaring spelling error — "Social Media Mangement [sic]" — and was recently been deactivated. Michael Caputo, a former Department of Health and Human Services official in the Trump administration, said, "The City of Kansas City, MO must fire its entire social media team immediately." Twenty minutes after the initial apology, Mayor Quinton Lucas joined in the damage-control effort, writing, "A message appeared earlier this evening from a City public account. The message was clearly inappropriate for a public account. The City has correctly apologized for the error, will review account access, and ensure nothing like it is shared in the future from public channels." Lucas' response was also met with ridicule. 'Your office apparently believes it is appropriate to denigrate a devout Catholic for comments he made about his own faith at a religious college.' Garrett Henson, chairman of the Kansas Federation of College Republicans, mocked the mayor's response, writing, "'We now realize that it's bad to dox people with the Kansas City X account. Rest assured that there will be no consequences for this action moving forward.'" Missouri AG weighs in Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey was not impressed by the city's apparent effort to intimidate a Christian over his deeply held beliefs — and he didn't need a tweet to know where to direct his ire. Bailey indicated on Thursday, "My office is demanding accountability after @KansasCity doxxed @buttkicker7 last night for daring to express his religious beliefs. I will enforce the Missouri Human Rights Act to ensure Missourians are not targeted for their free exercise of religion. Stay tuned." Bailey subsequently penned a letter to Mayor Lucas noting, "It has been reported that the city of Kansas City has retaliated against a well-respected local resident and member of the Kansas City Chiefs after he spoke about his religious views." "Your office's X account likely publicly released residential location information on a private citizen, Harrison Butker, in an attempt to retaliate against him for expressing his sincerely held religious beliefs at a religious college's commencement ceremony — to an audience that largely shares his views," continued Bailey. "Use of government social media to retaliate against an individual based on their religious beliefs amounts to discriminatory behavior that is not tolerated under our Constitution or Missouri statute." The AG underscored that America is founded upon a commitment to the free exercise of religion and that Missouri law "specifically prohibits faith-based discrimination against Missouri residents." Bailey added, "Your office apparently believes it is appropriate to denigrate a devout Catholic for comments he made about his own faith at a religious college." Extra to indicating the city may have violated state law, Bailey made abundantly clear to the NFL, without naming it outright: "I assure you that I am prepared to use the authority provided in statute to defend the principle of free religious expression." "Mr. Butker was well within his rights to discuss his religious views — views which are shared by millions of members of his faith tradition," wrote Bailey. "Sadly, history is filled with examples of people of religious faith being targeted for their beliefs by government officials."
