But a source familiar with the governor’s thinking was adamant that Gaetz is not on the list of candidates: “He won’t appoint Matt,” this source tells NR. This is not surprising news, given the cloud of controversy that surrounds Gaetz and the long list of Republican candidates DeSantis is already vetting for the seat. As NR reported last week, top candidates for the role include the president-elect’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, Florida attorney general Ashley Moody, Florida lieutenant governor Jeanette Nuñez, and DeSantis’s chief of staff, James Uthmeier. The governor said in a social media statement earlier this week that he expects to announce his pick in early January. Judge Juan Merchan, the judge presiding over President Trump’s New York hush money case, granted Trump’s request to file a motion to dismiss the charges. Merchan also indefinitely delayed the sentencing scheduled for November 26th, saying the “date is adjourned.” Merchan said Trump’s attorneys have until December 2nd to file their motion for dismissal, giving Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg until December 9th to respond. He was originally scheduled to decide on those motions by Nov. 19. He did not schedule a new date for sentencing. Trump is scheduled to be sworn in as president on Jan. 20. Trump had been scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 26, but his attorneys argued that the sentencing hearing — and the entire case — should be “immediately dismissed” because of presidential immunity protections, which they contend are already in place as a result of his “overwhelming victory” on Election Day. “Just as a sitting President is completely immune from any criminal process, so too is President Trump as President-elect,” Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove argued in a filing Wednesday. They’ve also argued he can’t be sentenced after his term in office because that’s too long to wait.
