The Mac vs. PC war is back on

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Microsoft isn’t launching a new version of Windows next week, but what it’s about to unveil could be just as significant. After nearly four years of falling behind Apple’s MacBooks, sources inside Microsoft tell me that the company is confident it can finally beat Apple’s own chips that power the MacBook Air. On Monday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella will detail the company’s “AI vision across hardware and software” at an event hosted at Microsoft’s campus in Redmond, Washington. It’s a pivotal moment for Microsoft and Windows because it won’t involve the typical chip partnership with Intel that we’ve seen for decades. Instead, Microsoft will set the stage for a summer of Arm-powered laptops thanks to a close collaboration with Qualcomm. I... Continue reading…

Sony’s new Xperia 1 VI flagship zooms in on photography nerds

Sony has introduced the Xperia 1 VI, the sixth generation of the company’s flagship smartphone that could tempt photography enthusiasts away from rivaling iPhone and Pixel devices. Some of those perks include a true optical zoom, AI-assisted autofocus, and a unified app experience. It has three cameras on the back: a 24mm main camera with a 48-megapixel Sony Exmor T sensor, a 16mm ultrawide, and an 85-170mm variable zoom telephoto camera that provides magnification around 3.5x to 7.1x that of the main camera. The Xperia 1 VI also utilizes this new telephoto camera for its macro mode. The device comes with auto-focus “human pose estimation” AI technology that can recognize a subject’s body and head position and supports filming video in... Continue reading…

The new ‘Hulu for Sports’ streaming service has a name: Venu Sports

Venu Sports is supposedly the next big thing in sports streaming. | Image: Venu Sports A new sports streaming service is coming later this year. We’ve known for months who is working on the service; it’s a co-venture from ESPN, Fox, and Warner Bros. Now, we also know what it’s going to be called: Venu Sports. The naming announcement comes a few months after the three networks said they were planning to launch a “differentiated sports-centric service,” a much-needed simplification of an increasingly chaotic sports streaming landscape. Sports rights are more expensive than ever and are being split up among more partners than ever, so having a way to share costs, infrastructure, and content makes a lot of sense. Initially, insiders took to calling the service Hulu For Sports, or Spulu for short. The actual name — which I’m... Continue reading…

You could be eligible for a piece of Apple’s $35 million iPhone 7 settlement

Photo by James Bareham / The Verge A June 3rd deadline is approaching to either file a claim connected to this class action lawsuit against Apple or opt out. If you purchased an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus that suffered from microphone audio issues, you may be eligible to claim from a settlement pool of $35 million, with amounts ranging from at least $50 to as much as $394. Customers who have used one of the devices between the dates of September 16th, 2016, and January 3rd, 2023, are potentially eligible to make a claim, but the requirements are pretty strict. Eligible parties fall into one of two groups: people who paid out of pocket for repairs on their iPhone 7 or 7 Plus due to audio issues or customers who are on the books as having reported a problem that didn’t pay for a... Google Pixel Buds Pro beat AirPods Pro in one key way

Google's Pixel device lineup has jumped up near the top of the list for people in search of high-quality mobile products that rival market-leading counterparts made by Apple. That's true of Pixel phones, of course, and you can find out why if you read BGR's Google Pixel 8a review. But it's also true of Pixel Buds wireless earbuds. Now happens to be the perfect time to give them a shot because a new sale has slashed Google's Pixel Buds Pro both to the lowest prices of 2024 so far. These terrific wireless noise cancelling earbuds from Google offer sound quality, ANC, and battery life that are all on par with Apple's AirPods Pro. However, Pixel Buds Pro are better than Apple's flagship earphones in one key way: They cost way less money. That's especially true right now, while Pixel Buds Pro are on sale for $139.99 instead of $200. Or, you can pick up Google's entry-level Pixel Buds A-Series, which outshine entry-level AirPods, for just $54.99 renewed. Google Pixel Buds Pro - Noise Canceling Earbuds - Up to 31 Hour Battery Life with Charging Case… Price: $139.99 (reg. $200) You Save: $60.00 (30%) Buy Now Google Pixel Buds A-Series True Wireless In-Ear Headphones - White (Renewed) Price: $54.99 (reg. $99) You Save: $4.06 (7%) Buy Now The entry-level Pixel Buds A-Series earbuds compete directly with Apple's second-generation AirPods. Some people prefer them to AirPods though, because they have silicon ear tips that isolate sound. As a result, the sound quality is even better than what you'll get from Apple's AirPods. If you check out our guide on the best AirPods deals, you'll see that AirPods are down to as little as $79.99 right now, depending on which model you want. That's the best price ever, but it's still more than you'll pay for Pixel Buds A-Series earphones right now. Google Pixel Buds A-Series retail for $99, which is $30 less than Apple's retail price for AirPods. But renewed Pixel Buds A-Series are also on sale right now for just $54.99. They're in excellent condition and guaranteed to look and perform like new. Otherwise, you can return them for a full refund. You can also pick up a brand-new pair for $99. Check out BGR's in-depth Google Pixel Buds A-Series review for more info. Google Pixel Buds A-Series True Wireless In-Ear Headphones - White (Renewed) Price: $54.99 You Save: $4.06 (7%) Buy Now If you're looking for a higher-end pair of earphones that also include noise cancelling technology, you've undoubtedly considered Apple's AirPods Pro 2. They're extremely popular, and most users would say they live up to the hype. But they're also very expensive, with a retail price of $249. Google's Pixel Buds Pro, on the other hand, retail for $200. They offer terrific sound quality, great noise cancelling quality, and a sleek design. You also get solid battery life of up to 31 hours of playtime between the charging case and the buds themselves. Pixel Buds Pro are more than worth the full retail price of $200. Right now, however, they're down to an all-time low price of $139.99. Google Pixel Buds Pro - Noise Canceling Earbuds - Up to 31 Hour Battery Life with Charging Case… Price: $139.99 You Save: $60.00 (30%) Buy Now No matter which model you go with, you're getting awesome earbuds with great sound quality. And if you opt for the pricier Pixel Buds Pro model, you're also getting surprisingly good active noise cancelling along with killer battery life. And needless to say, both of these Pixel Buds models work great with any Android phone or iPhone you might have.
