If you recall your convoluted time-traveling, skin-wearing cyborg apocalypse history, you’ll realize that’s the 27th anniversary of the series’ Judgment Day, when the machines begin their conquest of humanity. Well, one of them, anyway. The show is mainly set in 1997 Tokyo, and according to its writer, it won’t be ignoring the movies — any of them. The basic plot involves a soldier going back in time to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who’s trying to create a benevolent AI system to fend off the bad one that’s going to destroy humanity, including his three kids. Krieger, of course, was one of the co-founders of Instagram and spent the last few years working on Artifact, an AI news-reading app that was recently acquired by Yahoo. Krieger will oversee all of Anthropic’s product efforts going forward. It’s an important moment for the company to push hard on product, too: it recently released the Claude app for iOS, long after a bunch of its competitors were available on mobile, and just announced support for use in Spanish, French, Italian, and German. I knew Google was planning to make big AI announcements at I/O 2024. But then, rumors spread last week that OpenAI would unveil a Google Search rival for ChatGPT. Sam Altman dispelled those reports when OpenAI announced a ChatGPT event for Monday, just one day ahead of Google's big Gemini fest. OpenAI said it would discuss ChatGPT advancements and offer AI product demos. One thing was immediately clear: We were about to witness another significant battle in the ongoing AI war. Fast-forward to today and we now know everything there is to know about the AI updates that OpenAI and Google brought to the table. ChatGPT got its big GPT-4o upgrade, while Google brought variants of Gemini AI to virtually all its existing products. It also unveiled a new Project Astra AI assistant for the Gemini app that matches GPT-4o's multimodality. So who won? Well, it's complicated. OpenAI and Google are spearheading this ongoing AI revolution. Each has strengths and weaknesses, even after Monday and Tuesday's announcements. But I do think the real winner is the user. Whether you choose GPT-4o or Gemini, you won't be sorry. Although it's unclear what Apple has tweaked, it is like fixing some precision bugs or improving the pencil's reliability. Apple doesn't explain how to update the firmware of the Apple Pencil Pro, but as long as you keep it charging for 30 minutes on your M4 iPad Pro, it's possible that it will get the update.
