‘Old age’ Starts Later Than Ever in the Eye of the Beholder and Beholden, Study Reveals

Middle-aged and older adults believe that old age begins later in life than their peers did decades ago according to a new study. It’s enough to put a bit of spring chicken back into the feet of a silver fox, and the study found that people tended to view being old as occurring later and […] The post ‘Old age’ Starts Later Than Ever in the Eye of the Beholder and Beholden, Study Reveals appeared first on Good News Network.

Highly Pathogenic H5N1 Flu Found In New York City Wild Birds By Citizen Scientists

In what the study authors believe is the USA’s first large-scale assessment of avian flu in an urban bird population, a small number of wild birds in New York City have been found to be infected with the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain. While we typically consider the risk to humans to be greatest in rural areas, around settings such as poultry farms, the study highlights the need for awareness of other routes to exposure. The study authors stress that the news is no cause for alarm, and that there’s no reason to believe the NYC public is at substantial risk. “It is important to mention that, because we found H5N1 in city birds, this does not signal the start of a human influenza pandemic. We know that H5N1 has been around in New York City for about two years and there have been no human cases reported,” said co-author Dr Christine Marizzi in a statement.Indeed, local health authorities have been warning residents to steer clear of any birds that appear to be sick, and to report sightings of sick or dead birds for some time. This strain of H5N1 has been hitting the headlines in recent months after outbreaks in cattle on dairy farms in several states led to reports of humans and cats becoming infected.Marizzi, who heads the New York City Virus Hunters Program, and the research team got the community involved in their project to get a better sense of whether and how the virus may be circulating in NYC’s urban bird population.“Birds are key to finding out which influenza and other avian viruses are circulating in the New York City area, as well as important for understanding which ones can be dangerous to both other birds and humans,” Marizzi said. “And we need more eyes on the ground – that's why community involvement is really critical.”The program was born out of a collaboration between the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the Wild Bird Fund, and BioBus, an initiative that brings the lab to communities of students that have been historically underrepresented in science with the help of a converted school bus.  Local high school students work as paid interns with expert scientists to help mentor them. They’re given all the necessary protective gear to go out into the field and collect bird fecal samples, which they then help screen for viruses. Samples are also donated from animal welfare centers.Between January 2022 and November 2023, the Virus Hunters gathered 1,927 samples. The H5N1 virus strain was picked up in samples from six individual birds, representing four different species: Canada geese (Branta canadensis), red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis), peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus), and chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus).Analysis showed that two different genotypes of H5N1 were present, and that both were a mixture of the 2.3.4.4b clade that’s been circulating in the US since winter 2021-22 and endemic North American strains. Many migratory birds stop over in New York during their long journeys, which creates the ideal opportunity for different virus strains to mix. While the risk to the general public remains low, it’s still important for people to be aware that there are potential routes of transmission of avian flu even in urban areas, and that residents know how to protect themselves. The message from Marizzi is that it’s usually best to steer clear of large groups of wild birds: “It's smart to stay alert and stay away from wildlife. This also includes preventing your pets from getting in close contact with wildlife.”The study is published in the Journal of Virology.

George Soros Fueled $80M Into Groups Calling for Big Tech Censorship in Lead-Up to 2024 Elections

A massive effort spearheaded by a censorship-obsessed group financed by leftist billionaire George Soros is looking to incorporate global pressure to push Big Tech platforms to juice their censorship operations before the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Free Press, a Soros-funded media group that claimed responsibility for helping get former President Donald Trump banned from Twitter, is at the helm of a new push to restrict free speech online. “More Than 200 Groups Urge Leading Tech Platforms to Implement Election-Integrity Policies to Protect Democracy Worldwide,” Free Press blared in its Apr. 9 press release on a new co-signed letter by groups around the world.  In the letter, the anti-free speech groups raged at social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter (now X) and YouTube for reducing “interventions necessary to keep online platforms” allegedly “safe and healthy” and demanded “swift action” to protect so-called democracy. Tellingly, the groups that wrote the letter made a glaring omission, as MRC research unveiled that at least 45 of the signatories have had their coffers packed with Soros cash to the tune of a whopping $80,757,329 between 2016 and 2022 alone.  The letter was distributed to top executives at Big Tech platforms at Discord, Google, Instagram, Meta, Pinterest, Reddit, Rumble, Snap, TikTok, Twitch, YouTube and X (formerly Twitter). The document attempted to justify that it was written with reducing “real-world harms” and “the rise of extremism and violent attempts to overthrow democratic governments” in mind. However, it appears that its true design is to pressure Big Tech companies to silence  speech the left despises as 60 countries across the globe gear up for their elections in 2024. But even more disturbing was the letter’s implication that its primary target is interfering in the 2024 U.S. election. This development is directly in line with Soros’ brand, who has dedicated millions of his ungodly fortune to groups looking to interfere in elections by stifling online speech.  The first of six so-called “interventions” called for by the coalition involve investment “in greater platform integrity by reinstating election-integrity policies, inclusive of moderating content around the Big Lie,” which the Soros-funded co-signatory William J. Brennan Center for Justice defined as the idea that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump. The letter also condescended how in “2020, Black people and other people of color, women, and non-English speakers were — and continue to be — disproportionately targeted with online election lies.” The statement linked out to an Associated Press article pertaining specifically to so-called 2020 election “disinformation” in the U.S. election and how 2024 will be allegedly “worse.”  Nora Benavidez, the senior counsel and director of Digital Justice and Civil Rights at Free Speech, railed in a statement, “‘The tech industry’s refusal to safeguard their platforms is already having a dangerous impact on democracies around the world.’” Her disingenuous pontificating ended in hyperbole: “‘Today, hundreds of civil-society groups are putting these companies on notice: Failure to uphold and enforce sound election-integrity policies and expand non-English staffing to monitor disinformation, political deepfakes and other harmful content will be catastrophic to free and fair elections worldwide.’”  The explicit push for speech controls is especially disturbing in light of the stated vision of one of Free Press’s founders. Leftist Free Press co-founder Robert W. McChesney once made a Marxist call to action in 2000 to “overhaul” the American press: “Our job is to make media reform part of our broader struggle for democracy, social justice, and, dare we say it, socialism.” He published his comments in the Monthly Review, a self-described “independent socialist magazine.” It appears Free Press is living up to its founder’s principles.  The signatory that received the most Soros funding in MRC’s tally was none other than the climate change-obsessed Global Witness, which is already on record pressuring Facebook and TikTok to increase censorship operations before the 2022 midterm elections. The Soros empire funded the group with a massive $20,338,270 between 2016 and 2022. The group’s “digital threats” campaign, for example, is specifically focused on pressuring governments to regulate speech on social media. “The Big Tech companies are not too big to be made to change, and change does not rely on significant numbers of us having to stop using the digital products these companies provide,” Global Witness claimed.   Another one of the more dangerous groups listed in the letter is the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), which received $3,149,863 from Soros between 2017 and 2022. The leftist group was recently exposed in a House Judiciary Committee investigation for co-authoring a “hate groups” blacklist with the Soros-funded Global Disinformation Index (GDI) targeting “conservative” and faith-based organizations. This list was later disseminated by law enforcement to several financial institutions. The discovery was part of a broader congressional investigation that uncovered federal law enforcement circulating documents to private financial institutions to jawbone them into giving up sensitive customer data. The customers caught up in the federal dragnet didn’t even necessarily have to be suspected of committing any crimes. ISD disturbingly lists the U.S. Department of State and Department of Homeland Security as funders. The fact that Free Press is at the tip of this Soros-tied spear should concern every American. Free Press’s obsession with censorship and gaining control of the Internet cannot be overstated. This is the same group that boasted how it was “involved in direct talks that pressured Google and Amazon to boot the dangerous” pro-free speech platform Parler from their platforms because of so-called “election lies.”  Free Press’s 2015 annual report celebrated how it was also responsible for influencing the Obama-era FCC into adopting draconian “Net Neutrality” rules that arbitrarily sanctioned massive government regulation of the Internet. Free Press praised how the FCC reportedly cited the Soros-funded organization “close to 70 times” in its final order on the matter. The adopted FCC rules empowered government officials to review, approve or reject Internet service provider rates. What they actually did, according to the Cato Institute, was guarantee “ISPs government enforced market protection and profitability, in exchange for regulators ensuring that ISPs won’t be too profitable.” In other words, the FCC rules proposed by former President Barack Obama and Free Press in 2015 sought to regulate the Internet as a public utility. Then-FCC commissioner Ajit Pai stated that the move gave the agency “broad and unprecedented discretion to micromanage the Internet,” in a 2015 press release on the proposed rules. Americans beware. The Soros network is coming after your free speech just in time for the U.S. elections — again. Conservatives are under attack. Contact your representatives and demand that Big Tech be held to account to mirror the First Amendment while providing transparency, clarity on so-called hate speech and equal footing for conservatives. If you have been censored, contact us using MRC Free Speech America’s contact form, and help us hold Big Tech accountable.

Why do Republicans care more about foreign aid than foreign policy?

Why do Republicans care more about foreign aid than foreign policy?

Which is the more impeachable offense: Actively siding with terrorists and using U.S. tax dollars and diplomacy to support them against Israel or denying Israel weapons? Republicans had no problem funding Joe Biden’s jihad against Israel both in the form of aid to Gaza and unfreezing Iranian assets. Yet, Biden's decision to withhold foreign aid to Israel is their last straw, prompting Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) to file articles of impeachment alleging “abuse of power” and an illegal “quid pro quo.” The anger is justified but misdirected. Why does withholding foreign aid get Republicans’ juices flowing more than the active funding and enabling of Hamas and Iran? No country — not even an ally — is entitled to U.S. aid. Presidents have the authority to defer spending authorized by Congress, at least temporarily. That isn’t grounds for impeachment. What should be an impeachable offense, however, is actively siding with terrorists who are holding Americans hostage as a means of extorting Israel into stopping the war and releasing thousands of Hamas murderers. Sadly, many of the same Republicans inveighing against Biden’s “pause” of a delivery of precision munitions to Israel just approved at least $9 billion in aid to Hamas, along with funds to build a port on the coast of Gaza. Perhaps one day we will understand why Republicans have such a fetish for foreign aid to the point they are willing to fund both sides of the same war. Why have Republicans stood by as Biden undermined the Israeli war effort and sided with terrorists since October 7? They had political leverage with must-pass appropriations bills, including the National Defense Authorization Act and the recent foreign aid bill but refused to use it. Following Iran’s unprecedented ballistic missile attack on Israel in April, Reuters reported that the administration knew about Iran’s attack beforehand and even negotiated its scope and size with the terrorist country. “Iran informed Turkey in advance of its planned operation against Israel ... [and] Washington had conveyed to Tehran via Ankara that any action it took had to be ‘within certain limits,’” the news service reported a day after Iran launched around 170 drones, over 30 cruise missiles, and more than 120 ballistic missiles at Israel. “Iran informed us in advance of what would happen. Possible developments also came up during the meeting with [Antony] Blinken, and [the U.S.] conveyed to Iran through us that this reaction must be within certain limits,” the Turkish official said of negotiations directly with the U.S. secretary of state. This bombshell report went over the heads our supposedly hawkish Republican senators. Here was a clear example of the Biden administration working actively with an enemy against Israel. It was public information before the vote on the foreign aid bill. Where was the clamor to deny Biden his demands for billions in aid for Hamas and another $60 billion for Ukraine? Where was the demand to stop undermining Israel and building a pier for Hamas? Instead, they obsequiously gave Biden everything he wanted, funded Hamas, but thought that because they were also funding Israel (both sides of the same war!), all would be well. Well, you can’t blame Biden for taking the GOP concessions and sitting on the Israel aid while using the rest for Israel’s enemies. You can’t blame Biden for not taking the GOP seriously when it rewarded him after he helped coordinate an Iranian attack on Israel. Again, which is worse: Funding terrorists and providing them with diplomatic, logistic, and moral support or not funding Israel while subsidizing its enemies? This absurdity was on full display when it issued waivers to allow weapons sales to Hamas' allies in Lebanon, Qatar, and Iraq. Worse, our military is close to completing a floating pier to serve as a Gaza port. Not only is it wrong to supply Gaza with anything other than a scarlet letter, but this port will also create yet another permanent U.S. security obligation in the region. The pier has already come under fire, presumably from the very Hamas beasts we are feeding with the hand they bite. Unless we put an end to this escapade, it could easily turn into another Beirut barracks calamity. We will reap what we sow. We need to move away from this misguided obsession with foreign aid. It was absurd for Democrats to impeach Donald Trump over withholding foreign aid from Ukraine, and likewise, it would be absurd to impeach Biden over withholding aid to Israel. What should warrant impeachment, however, is Biden’s active support for Israel’s enemies, who are also our enemies. For example, the United States is reportedly withholding intelligence from Israel about the location of the masterminds behind the October 7 attacks. That’s far worse — and surely far more impeachable — than withholding taxpayer-funded aid. All things being equal, I’d prefer that Republicans pass a bill cutting off weapons to Israel’s enemies than the bill they plan to pass on Wednesday to prohibit the Pentagon from delaying weapon transfers to Israel. Then again, if Republicans can’t bring themselves to care about our own border security, it’s no surprise they would be ineffective in defending Israel’s security from Biden’s pro-Hamas policies — so long as Israel gets its share of the foreign-aid pie. Perhaps one day we will understand why Republicans have such a fetish for foreign aid to the point they are willing to fund both sides of the same war.

Pathetic Politico preaches; Seinfeld schools Duke grads

It’s hard not to laugh at late-night TV. Not the jokes, mind you, but the clowns telling them. It’s pure propaganda, and even Politico noticed.'What I need to tell you as a comedian: Do not lose your sense of humor. You can have no idea at this point in your life how much you are going to need it to get through.'The site’s recent story, “Why Late Night Shows Won’t Roast Joe Biden,” suggests even a liberal news site has had enough of the landscape’s extreme bias.Think again.“By any metric, Biden is a rich vein of material for late night or sketch comics,” the piece argues.Duh.And then comes the rationale. As these hosts approached the task of poking fun at Trump, they moved from being comic mercenaries to understanding themselves as part of a media apparatus that had to stand up to the dangers of Trump.Dangers? You mean like abandoning our allies, draining the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, censoring speech, and locking up our political adversaries? My, that IS dangerous.Just when you think the aging Beltway blog's agenda can’t get worse ... it does.If some topics are verboten, and some political figures are beyond reproach, then we’re setting ourselves up for a culture of increasingly niche products serving niche audiences. Right-wing comic Greg Gutfeld has found ratings success on Fox News counterprogramming with conservative comedy (if you can call it that) because he’s exploited that hole in the market. The future of political comedy looks a lot more like that: Hacky, partisan bomb-throwing with a half-joke or two thrown in for good measure. It’s Gutfeld across the board.Yes, right-leaning audiences are a “niche,” and Fox News’ Gutfeld is the partisan hack, not the guy who trotted out dancing COVID-19 needles ...Hollywood's commitment to recyclingWe’re about to get another “Road House” film, a sequel to the recent reboot starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Plus, Elle Woods is back, courtesy of a prequel series exploring the “Legally Blonde” character’s early years. And Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the scribe who helped knee-cap Indiana Jones’ last film, will be writing a new “Lara Croft/Tomb Raider” series. That’s just from Team Amazon.Hollywood is in panic mode, and just about everything must be tied to Intellectual Properties. It’s partly our fault. No, we didn’t spend-spend-spend and cause the industry to drown in red ink. Nor did we tell screenwriters to “put a chick in it and make it lame and gay,” to quote Cartman. But we often (too often!) flocked to rebooted properties over original fare.We can change this soon enough.“If,” an original kiddie film from John Krasinski of “The Office” fame, opens Friday. This summer brings “Horizon,” the ultimate passion project from Kevin Costner. It’s an all-American Western story he’s waited 30 years to tell. And then there’s “Megalopolis,” the new Francis Ford Coppola movie that doesn’t even have a U.S. distributor yet (although it should at some point). We know little about the film save it’s the most ambitious project from a legendary American auteur in ages. And if Coppola's labor of love seems like cinematic brussels sprouts to you — suck it up. You never know until you try. Besides, better to feast on those rare originals than choke down the same old microwaved leftovers. “Caddyshack 3: Gopher’s Revenge," anyone?NYC lawlessness leaves Mr. Pink black and blueWe know actor Steve Buscemi from “Boardwalk Empire,” “Fargo,” and the greatest meme in modern history — “How Do You Do, Fellow Kids?”This week, he endured the Big Apple’s knack for ignoring law and order. The 66-year-old character actor got slugged at random by a stranger and had to go to the hospital. He’ll be fine, save a serious shiner, but his plight brings home how dangerous New York City remains under one-party rule. Especially for beloved character actors: Buscemi's fellow thesps Michael Stuhlbarg and Rick Moranis have also endured unprovoked fisticuffs from NYC denizens. Something tells me each of these assailants spent less time in custody than it takes to doze off in front of Netflix's latest middling rom-com.And you want to be my latex salesman?Jerry Seinfeld’s “Unfrosted” press tour is the opposite of “nothing.”The creator of the famously apolitical sitcom has been riling the left left and right. First, he blasted the “extreme left” for hurting comedy. You know he’s onto something when his critics bring up his age, skin color, and squeaky-clean brand as their preferred lines of attack. He also spoke out in favor of Israel, a move which earned him plenty of hate amongst the college demographic and MSNBC.Seinfeld capped his “Unfrosted” tour by addressing Duke University's graduating class.A few Palestinian apologists walked out, but everyone else heard Seinfeld trash the woke mindset even more. Not directly, but we all know what he meant.“What I need to tell you as a comedian: Do not lose your sense of humor. You can have no idea at this point in your life how much you are going to need it to get through. Not enough of life makes sense for you to be able to survive it without humor.”It gets better.“The slightly uncomfortable feeling of awkward humor is okay. It is worth the sacrifice of an occasional discomfort to have some laughs. Don’t lose that. Even if it’s at the cost of occasional hard feelings, it’s okay.”He even jabbed at the notion of so-called white privilege.“My point is we’re embarrassed about things we should be proud of and proud of things that we should be embarrassed about.”And yes, there’s definitely something wrong with that.

Trump allies pack courtroom, denounce Bragg’s show trial circus

The slow trickle of congressional allies at former President Donald Trump’s trial is finally turning up. Tuesday's delegation to the trial, led by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), includes onetime presidential candidate and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, as well as Reps. Cory Mills and Byron Donalds of Florida. Monday saw Sens. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) and Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), along with Rep. Nicole Malliotakis — the first of New York’s 10 Republican congressmen to find the time to support the party’s presidential candidate. Last week, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) became the first member of the legislative to show up at all. Show trials might seem clownish in the American system, but that doesn’t mean they can’t serve their purpose. Despite the New York trial’s deeply flawed premise (and the likelihood of a successful appeal, in case of conviction), Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s effort is a real political threat to Trump’s presidential campaign. Yes, it’s a show trial, but show trials can still perform their duty. Prominent Republicans showing up signals a recognition of this reality and a slow rediscovery of basic political instinct that’s been painfully absent these past few weeks. The former president’s supporters have been quick to point out that Bragg’s prosecution is a sham. For those who haven’t been following too closely, the prosecutor from Manhattan is trying to put Trump in prison for over a century for falsifying business records to hide a non-disclosure agreement — a misdemeanor he’s upgraded to a felony by claiming it was done to break federal campaign finance laws. He explicitly ran for the office with the promise of prosecuting Trump but waffled and ended up late to the game. In New York, you can only charge someone with falsifying business records within two years of the crime being committed. That changes to five years if it’s a felony, but Bragg was still too late to bring charges in that window, so he’s citing a COVID backlog. To add to the madness, non-disclosure payments aren’t campaign expenses, and further: Bragg doesn’t have the authority to bring charges over federal campaign finance laws. The whole case, mind you, rests on the word of a disbarred liar, Michael Cohen. And while the testimony of porn star Stormy Daniels was hyped in corporate media for days, they pretended it didn’t matter when she came across as somewhat crazy. She was allowed to go into great detail about her alleged sexual encounter with Trump, for example, and changed her story on that too. The judge somehow allowed this seemingly immaterial testimony while barring a former Federal Elections Commission chairman from testifying that non-disclosure agreements are not campaign expenses. The judge permitted all this and, after last week’s Stormy Daniels embarrassment, declined the defense’s request for a mistrial. It’s worth noting he’s a donor to Joe Biden, and his daughter is a Democrat political fundraiser. Without a doubt, the shenanigans of the past few weeks set the stage well for Trump to successfully appeal a conviction. But he almost certainly wouldn't get an answer before the election, and then what does it matter? It would have achieved its purpose: convicting the Republican candidate of a felony, thereby deterring Americans from voting for him. While his committed partisans would likely grow even more enthusiastic, polling has repeatedly shown a felony conviction would cost Trump votes. Some polls suggest a conviction is Biden’s best path to re-election. Show trials might seem clownish in the American system, but that doesn’t mean they can’t serve their purpose. They embarrass their target. Last week’s porn-star testimony was deeply embarrassing. At the top of Monday’s proceedings, Vance tweeted he’s “now convinced the main goal of this trial is psychological torture.” Further, a show trial isolates its target: You’re all alone against “the people of the state of New York.” Finally, a show trial silences its target. Trump has been silenced, barred on pain of imprisonment from pointing out how farcical the whole thing is. That’s why showing up counts. Senators, congressmen, and other Republican leaders sitting among the accused’s supporters is an important optic. It hits back against the sense of isolation, and more than that, it provides an important megaphone for a boisterous politician who’s been ironically silenced. Starting with Scott last week, politicians have hosted pressers in front of the courthouse to call out those things the former president has been barred from saying. And the press will cover it, so even if you’re one of the many Trump-skeptical Republicans in Washington, it’s politically worthwhile for the exposure alone. “It’s money on the ground,” one longtime D.C. conservative insider told Blaze Media of Tuesday’s delegation. “They are just flying to New York to pick it up.” That doesn’t mean they won’t get pushback from Biden’s palace guard in the corporate media. Amazingly, some have suggested that Republicans are unduly using their influence by drawing attention to a political persecution. Incredible gall. And there are dozens of Republican senators and many more congressmen who’ve yet to make the trip, nine from New York alone. But Congress is right to take an interest, even if lawmakers are late to the party. And the more the merrier. The Federalist: Republicans need to show up to Trump’s Manhattan lawfare trial every day Blaze Media: CNN's Fareed Zakaria dares to challenge the narrative about the fairness of Trump's hush money trial: ‘This happens to be true.’ Blaze Media: Michael Cohen testifies against Trump — admits he was ‘angry, beyond angry’ with former president Sign up for the Christopher Bedford newsletter Sign up to get Blaze Media senior politics editor Christopher Bedford's newsletter, launching later this spring. John Sarbanes (D-Md.), who did not run for re-election. Dunn was promoted as a hero of the January 6 riot, writing a book on the day called “Standing My Ground,” doing a television tour, and receiving the Presidential Citizens Medal from Biden. His campaign was endorsed by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). The only problem was Dunn appeared to be a serial fabulist. While he went on and on about his many heroic deeds and his bloody fists from beating back racists, thousands of hours of security and bodycam footage reviewed by Blaze Media’s Steve Baker revealed an angry and sometimes bumbling man whose only physical confrontations were against already neutralized, calm trespassers. Superiors appeared to tell an incensed Dunn either to leave the scene or to calm down on two separate occasions. On a third, an excited Dunn accidentally ejected the magazine from his firearm. In a fourth incident, he could be heard screaming about police being taken out in stretchers (this did not happen). Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District is among the most heavily gerrymandered in the country, so the primary winner is a safe bet for the general election. WPATH is the organization that takes the lead on establishing the so-called standards that are the authority in America’s lucrative sex-change industry. They’re the guys who claim it’s all safe and good for the patient. Now, thanks to a DCNF public records request, you can catch a glimpse of some of their private meetings: ...
