“She Doesn’t Need A Trophy From The CMA” – Billy Ray Cyrus Chimes In On Beyoncé CMA Awards “Snub”

Seems like Billy Ray Cyrus is a little salty about the CMA Awards. The "Achy Breaky Heart" singer took to his Instagram earlier in the week to congratulate CMA Award nominees, and then provided somewhat of a backhanded remark directed at the annual awards show for not giving more coverage to he and Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" when that song took home a trophy: "Congratulations to ALL CMA nominees! I’m so happy and proud to see country music opening their doors and format to be inclusive to all people, all styles. Lil Nas X and I won this award in 2019 for 'Event Of The Year'… but you wouldn’t have seen it because they didn’t air it in the show.” Tell us how you really feel, Mr. Cyrus... Billy Ray then used that last line as a segue to share his thoughts on the snubbing-heard-round-the-world of Beyoncé. There were many music fans - and members of the "Bey Hive" - that thought the R&B singer was deserving to at least be nominated for Cowboy Carter. One of those people was none other than Billy Ray Cyrus: "I was surprised to see Beyoncé wasn’t nominated? Her album was brilliant… her single ruled. But she knows that. She doesn’t need a trophy from the CMA… or permission... or approval from any of their judges." There was much speculation about whether or not the “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer would be included in this year’s CMA nominations. And when the lists of nominees came out with Beyoncé nowhere to be found, some felt as though she was snubbed, while others felt as though her album Cowboy Carter wasn’t enough to garner nomination. To be clear, the CMA Award nominations are determined through a three-round ballot process. The first round ballot consists of write-in submissions, the second-round is highest vote getters from those write-ins, and then the third round ballot establishes the top five in each category. According to the Washington Post, Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter made made it through to the second-round ballot for Album of the Year, and she reached that stage as well for Female Vocalist of the Year, but neither ultimately made the top five. Some CMA voters were directly asked why Beyoncé didn't receive any nominations, and many pointed at a line that the pop singer used when she announced her 2024 album. In her Instagram post, Beyoncé stated that Cowboy Carter was a "Beyoncé album," and not a "country album." That lead many to conclude that it shouldn't be nominated for country music awards. Cyrus concluded his pro-Beyoncé message with a quote from the late, great Muhammad Ali. He suggested that the "16 Carriages" singer didn't need any recognition for her album, because deep down she knows that she left her mark on the country music industry - even if she was only intertwined with country for a short amount of time: "‘When ya knock em out… Ya don’t need no judge’. – Muhammad Ali.” Sure, Billy.... whatever you say....

Benjamin Tod & Jesse Daniel Team Up For New Single “Turn The Devil Away,” Cover The Randy Travis & George Jones Classic, “A Few Ole Country Boys”

Two new ones from Benjamin Tod and Jesse Daniel are coming in HOT. Benjamin Tod is on a roll, sharing two new singles right off the heels of his critically acclaimed record, Shooting Star. Tod, this time, is not running solo or working with his band, The Lost Dog Street Band. He's teamed up with none other than Jesse Daniel, a fellow real-deal honky tonk singer and songwriter. If Jesse Daniel is not already on your radar, listen up. The California native recently released his fourth record, Countin' The Miles, on which, you can his distinct brand of honky tonk country music. Now based in Austin, Texas, his lyrics are gritty and raw, and he shares tales of his life and what he's experienced throughout his many years on the road, making mistakes and getting clean. Jesse Daniel and Benjamin Tod's voices are a match made in heaven as they sing a cautionary tale on their original track, "Turn The Devil Away." Benjamin Tod shared with the song's release that this is the first true co-write he's done with an artist, and working with a gifted songwriter like Daniel led to them creating a song that fits both of their sounds and highlights their struggles throughout their lifetime. “I had never formally co-wrote and laid down a song with someone before this, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Jesse Daniel and I had a flawless experience. Jesse and I are cut from the same cloth of the old world punk scene with the scares and kicked habits to prove it. We understand things about ourselves and about the world that no one else can because we had to escape our personal hells around the same time and culture in American society. All that to say, there are no two other writers on the planet that COULD have written this song much less in their spare time both in the middle of major tours. I am proud to call Jesse Daniel a brother and I look forward to many more songs together on the horizon.”  Daniel echoed his sentiments, noting that Tod laid down the foundation for the song, and he finished it off. “Ben sent me the early half-written version of this song one night as a scratchy voice memo. He asked me if I wanted to finish it, so I pulled out my guitar and wrote the second verse and changed a few things around chord wise. When it all came together, we were both very proud of this song. To me, it’s cautionary advice from somebody who has seen it all. Ben and I have that in common, we’ve both been through hell and back. When we recorded it, I had the intro lick already in my mind, and that’s exactly how it came out. It sort of drones and adds to the melancholy of this tune.” Daniel and Tod are known for writing lyrics that often involve fictional tales or create storylines that build off historical moments. To hear them both lean into their hardships on this song shows a vulnerable side that you know is authentic. Both men know how to write a sad country song well, but it strikes a deeper chord when they write about their struggles. In their respective ways, they've come face to face with devil and turned their lives around, and you can hear that in these lyrics as they sing about the pain they put themselves through before they "Turn(ed) The Devil Away" and began to change their life for the better. "I've been left all alone With no one else to blame Toward the wreckage I was prone Years of turmoil and pain For the kindness that you've shown I've fought like hell to change Time to bring it on back home And live to die another day..." This song is a must-add to your playlist. Jesse Daniel and Benjamin Tod are a musical match made in heaven. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HZ3es0vBk4&pp=ygUTdHVybiB0aGUgZGV2aWwgYXdheQ%3D%3D But that's just the first of two songs that this duo released today. They also laid down a rock-solid take of Randy Travis and George Jones’ 1990 hit, “A Few Ole Country Boys.” I hope Tod was sincere when he said he's looking forward to writing more with Daniel in the future because I could listen to a complete record of songs from this duo. Fire it up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8evpwiD7Po If you like what you hear, you're in luck. Benjamin Tod and Jesse Daniel are hitting the road together for a few select dates. These two artists put on outstanding shows on their own, so I can only imagine how mind-blowing they are together live. Jesse Daniel & Benjamin Tod Tour Dates: December 5 - Louisville, KY - Mercury Ballroom December 6 - Cincinnati, OH - Bogart’s December 7 - Knoxville, TN - The Mill & Mine December 8 - Nashville, TN - Brooklyn Bowl
