Yesterday, creator Bryan Lee O’Malley shared on Twitter (via Gizmodo) that the series, which debuted on the streamer a year ago, was one and done. “It’s been one year since Scott Pilgrim Takes Off came out. It was an honor to work with all of the cast & staff around the world. It was like conducting a symphony orchestra every day. From the moment [BenDavid Grabinski] sparked the idea, the project felt like a one-of-a-kind miracle,” he wrote. He added, “Anyway, we were recently informed that the show will NOT return. As you know, we only intended one season, and called in a lot of favors to make it happen, so making more would have been nearly impossible. Still, I know some of you have been holding out hope.” As Reactor’s Molly Templeton explains in her review of the series, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is more than an adaptation of the live-action movie or the comic books. The creators, Templeton writes, “have found a way to apply twenty years of growing up to this story, while still letting these characters be who they are. The result is a delightfully energetic, deeply felt new version—not a remix, not a cover, not a reboot. If anything, it feels like a different timeline, one that complements and reflects the story as we knew it.” Without getting into spoilers, it’s not surprising that the anime is not getting a second season, though there’s always a hope. Wednesday was a rough day for former network evening show hosts. Former NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams attributed Donald Trump’s win to “nihilism” and former CBS Evening News host Katie Couric claimed that rape survivor and GOP Rep. Nancy Mace is being “just shitty" to Rep.-elect Sarah McBride because Mace believes women’s restrooms are for actual women, not men who claim they are women. In a video posted to her TikTok account, Couric lamented: Hey everyone, I'm just so disappointed that this Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, is being so rude, and I don't know, just bigoted against Sarah McBride, who is a new congressperson from the state of Delaware. I know Sarah. She is the first openly transgender member of Congress, and she's an extraordinary human being, has done a great job representing the people of Delaware and is now going to be doing it in Washington, and it just seems nasty and mean, and cruel because she is the only member who is now forbidden to use the ladies' room and it's just shitty, you know. Anyway, I just wanted to say that.     McBride is not the only member of Congress “forbidden to use the ladies’ room.” All of the other males are also prohibited from doing so. Still, Couric added that Mace and people who agree with her “are just mean, aren't they? It really makes me mad. That's it.” Responsible societies do not throw away all of human history and every biology textbook ever written just because Katie Couric is “mad.”

On Wednesday night, Puck’s Dylan Byers broke down the fallout from both MSNBC’s Morning Joe co-hosts and married couple Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski’s attempt at making nice with President-Elect Trump (to avoid his wrath) and Comcast admitting this week it’ll spin off MSNBC and six other cable networks. The headline and subhead were exquisite: “Mika & Joe’s Excellent Adventure; News and notes on the real ulterior motive behind the Mar-a-Lago pilgrimage. Plus, all the nail-biting and agita unleashed at 30 Rock in the wake of the Comcast spinco news.” Byers made sure to emphasis off the top that Brzezinski and Scarborough’s trip to visit Trump at Mar-a-Lago wasn’t some massive burden but rather a short hop, skip, and a jump from Jupiter to West Palm Beach (so less than an hour away). He explained their “relatively exalted status in the legacy media firmament” meant the trip “became a minor source of fascination or frustration among their peers at 30 Rock, as well as fodder for the media’s broader introspective post-election soul-searching journey.” The eyeballs and hullabaloo didn’t translate, Byers explained, with the day after seeing a drop of “38 percent from this year’s average.” But the real reason wasn’t what they claimed about fostering dialogue, but rather “they feared retribution” from Trump, who would “seek revenge for their criticism of him during the campaign.” “Specifically, Joe and Mika have told friends and associates they’re afraid that Trump...will resurrect a decades-old, totally bullshit, birther-level conspiracy theory about the death of Lori Klausutis, a 28-year-old intern in Scarborough’s former Florida congressional office who died in 2001,” he added. He cited a source as having told him the lovebirds “are petrified of retribution” and Trump Justice Department investigating them, not any concern for their network’s future or the show’s ratings. In other words, they’re selfish political tools. Who knew! As for the big Comcast spinoff, Byers had some bad news for MSNBC employees: Comcast cable spin-out, of course, is just the latest Pangaea moment in the cable business—and in cable news, in particular—and the harbinger of a cascading series of subprime future outcomes: tighter budgets, higher margins, inscrutable overlords, lower salaries, less influence, smaller workforces, cheaper real estate, fewer benefits, replacing MacBooks with Acers, and rampant cost-cutting across the board, to name but a few. The maneuver is also likely to liberate other media conglomerates to pursue similar spinoffs and therefore consolidate the industry. Byers cut through the highfalutin, meaningless corporate talk about Comcast suits insisting everything will be just peachy and drilled down on the simple reality of cord-cutting (click “expand”): This narrative, while not entirely untrue, has led some observers to anticipate that the new entity will be an M&A predator, not prey. In a meeting with MSNBC staff on Wednesday, NBCUniversal Media Group chairman Mark Lazarus, who is set to become C.E.O. of the new entity, similarly highlighted those opportunities, which would bolster the spinco’s negotiations with cable operators. But the real rationale for this new arrangement is almost certainly more pragmatic. Like other media conglomerates, all of which are trying to burnish growing and profitable streaming businesses, Comcast’s cable portfolio is an asset in decline— and it’s profitable, yes, but also expensive: a distraction for management and a frustration for shareholders. And the portfolio, in so many ways, represents precisely the profile of a company that entices the financial erogenous zones of private equity. Apollo or Blackstone deal hunters, to name but a few, would delight at the notion of resizing the company, cutting budgets, undoing costly decisions, and managing the business for cash flow. And, presumably, they could do it all with the Roberts family still in a supportive control position. By spinning off the cable assets, Roberts could then wait for two years until the tax statute passes, and then sell the remainder of the business to their private equity partner, or another acquisitive mediaco buying the dip, without the tax hit. He’d still get a premium on his Class A shares, while preserving optionality in the event that the economic landscape changes, and possibly negotiating many favorable deals to support Peacock along the way. Byers provided the tea that NBCUniversal Media Group chairman Mark Lazarus spent his “Wednesday seeking to assuage the fears of MSNBC talent through multiple Q&A sessions and direct outreach to anchors.”  Over at outlets such as the New York Post and The Hollywood Reporter, a meeting with MSNBC staff included network pundits/anchors Rachel Maddow, Katy Tur, and Chris Jansing. Before concluding with the hilarious hypothetical of CNBC being spun off further and bought by Rupert Murdoch with MSNBC being sold to former CNN puppetmaster Jeff Zucker, Byers said the spinoff left “many network employees...flooded with anxiety” with “half a dozen high-level employees” calling him to ask for what he saw out of his crystal ball.

It had not been a good week for ABC’s The View as they were forced to repeatedly read legal notes after parroting allegations against President-elect Trump’s nominations for cabinet positions. On Thursday’s episode, co-host Joy Behar praised their legal notes as a form of fact-checking and suggested that it was a reason people were fans of the show. But that was a lie and they were still getting away with making heinous and unfounded accusations. “But I think that's why people like our show, because they know that we are checked by ABC News...If we're wrong, we have the legal note here,” Behar quipped as she pointed to co-host Sunny Hostin. And yet, the top of the show, moderator Whoopi Goldberg claimed – without evidence – that being accused of sexual misconduct was a requirement to be nominated by Trump and falsely claimed nearly all of his picks had been accused. Behar even backed her up: GOLDBERG: It seems like unless you have a sexual misconduct allegation, you can't be in the cabinet. BEHAR: That's true. GOLDBERG: That's what it's looking like because I mean – Was it 11 people and maybe one of the 11 doesn't have something going on? “It’s like, ‘Oh, let's see, who’s accused of sexual assault? Put them in the cabinet! And they're like, ‘pick me, pick me!’” Behar insisted. There were no legal notes or fact-checks by ABC regarding that false statement.     They were followed up by pretend independent Sara Haines suggesting that “sexual assault and sex offenders” were part of the “MAGA agenda” for the country: But one interesting thing was Karoline Leavitt, who’s Trump’s pick for White House press secretary said, “He has chosen brilliant and highly-respected outsiders to serve in his administration and he will continue to stand behind them as they fight against all those who seek to derail the MAGA agenda.” I would encourage them to separate sexual assault and sexual offenders from their MAGA agenda or you're telling me this is part of your agenda and that's what's coming out. There were no legal notes or fact-checks by ABC regarding that false statement. Behar went on to dredge up the long-debunked accusations against Justice Brett Kavanaugh. She and Hostin whined that the FBI ended their investigation after finding no evidence of wrongdoing. “So, I mean, that's the beginning of the end right there! People should have been alerted to what would be coming down the pike right there! So, I’m not surprised by this at all,” she huffed. There were no legal notes or fact-checks by ABC regarding that false statement. But of course, there weren’t. Because contrary to Behar’s framing of legal notes, that’s not how ABC views them. Last year, when responding to a NewsBusters study of how many legal notes they were forced to deliver in 2022 (three dozen) on their Behind the Table podcast, executive producer Brian Teta insisted “a legal note is not a correction” but rather “is something that as a part of ABC News we are asked to do to make sure we’re presenting all statements and sides.” So essentially, Behar’s own comments about legal notes was misinformation. In a later segment stoking fear about social media, Behar claimed that podcaster Joe Rogan “believes in dragons!” The View didn’t play a video of what Behar alleged for one simple reason: it never happened. In the video in question, Rogan was talking about “things that existed only in myth but every culture has, like dragons.” He proposed that ancient humans had seen “a giant lizard” and called “a dragon” (and gave the example of Komodo Dragons) or creatures that inspired the legends of dragons. He called fire-breathing dragons “bull shit,” and on the idea of dragons of legends being real, he said “neh.” What Hostin was forced to read a legal note about were former Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Army veteran Pete Hegseth: I have a legal note. Matt Gaetz has long denied all allegations and has not been charged with any crime. Gaetz previously dismissed allegations that he paid for sex saying that, quote, “Someone is trying to re-categorize my generosity to ex-girlfriends as something more untoward. Another legal note, Pete Hegseth’s lawyer said he paid the woman in 2023 to head off the threat of a baseless lawsuit. He has denied any wrongdoing. “Just call the show ‘Legal Note’ from now on,” Behar added, refusing to take it seriously. The transcript is below. Two former light heavyweight UFC champions will come out of retirement to box each other, one of the fighters revealed.Rashad Evans announced that he will compete in a boxing match with Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, saying that he's "jumped into training camp" for a bout in early 2025."We're looking to do it potentially at the end of February, and it's most likely going to be here in Florida.
