Sci-Fi Thriller White Mars Casts Leads from Bridgerton and Pretty Little Liars

News White Mars Sci-Fi Thriller White Mars Casts Leads from Bridgerton and Pretty Little Liars It will be shot exclusively in a “virtual production environment,” which doesn’t sound terrible at all By Vanessa Armstrong | Published on November 18, 2024 Credit: Liam Daniel/Netflix Comment 0 Share New Share Credit: Liam Daniel/Netflix There’s a sci-fi thriller called White Mars currently filming in Rome, Italy. The production, which boasts that it will be shot exclusively in a “virtual production environment,” has two stars from some popular television shows. According to Deadline, Luke Newton (pictured above), who plays Colin on Netflix’s Bridgerton has joined Pretty Little Liars alum Lucy Hale on the film. Here’s the logline of White Mars, per Deadline: Set in an isolated Aquila Research Facility, White Mars follows microbiologist Sammie (Hale) as she and Leo (Newton) fight to save their fellow crew members from a malevolent entity whose sole intention is to extinguish them all. The trope of an evil, presumably extraterrestrial menace murdering people on space station is far from an original concept in science fiction. That doesn’t mean it can’t be done well, of course, though the fact that the project seems to be touting the technology it’s using rather than the story doesn’t bode well. The movie has Martin Owen on board as director, whose best-rated work before this is 2022’s The Loneliest Boy in the World. The writers attached to the script are Roo Berry, Matt Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent. No news yet on when the movie will make its way to a screen near you.[end-mark] The post Sci-Fi Thriller White Mars Casts Leads from Bridgerton and Pretty Little Liars appeared first on Reactor.

Defy Your Eardrums by Attending a Singalong Screening of Wicked

News Wicked Defy Your Eardrums by Attending a Singalong Screening of Wicked Get your chance to do Elphaba’s signature “battle cry” in a theater full of musical enthusiasts this holiday season By Vanessa Armstrong | Published on November 18, 2024 Screenshot: Universal Pictures Comment 0 Share New Share Screenshot: Universal Pictures The film adaptation of Wicked starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande is set to premiere in mere days. If you’re a fan of the musical, however, and want to take your renditions of the score beyond karaoke night or the privacy of your shower, I’ve got good news for you: Starting on December 25, 20204, you can attend a screening of the film and belt your brains out. According to Variety, special singalong screenings will invade approximately a thousand theaters this holiday season. During the course of Part One’s two hours and forty-one minutes, you can bellow out “Popular,” “Defying Gravity,” “Dancing Through Life,” “The Wizard and I” and “One Short Day.” Other songs, sadly, will have to wait for Part Two to come out in theaters on November 21, 2025, where presumably we’ll also have the dubious pleasure of later attending singlong screenings for other favorites like “For Good” and “No Good Deed.” The film, of course, is the adaptation of the popular musical (which itself is an adaptation of the popular book, but I digress), where a young Glinda and Elphaba meet at a school in the Land of Oz where, after a meeting with the Wizard of said Oz, take different paths, with Glinda becoming Glinda the Good and Elphaba getting the moniker of the Wicked Witch of the West. While we still have to wait a bit over a month for the singalong screenings, we’ll be able to keep our mouths shut and watch Wicked: Part One when it premieres in theaters on November 22, 2024.[end-mark] The post Defy Your Eardrums by Attending a Singalong Screening of Wicked appeared first on Reactor.

Na-No! Na-No! Here Are Behind-The-Scenes Facts About The Sitcom Mork & Mindy

In 1978, ABC introduced viewers to Mork & Mindy, an extraterrestrial who becomes roommates with a female human on Earth. The sitcom ran for four seasons and was a hit, but there are some behind-the-scenes facts fans might not know. From the Dick Van Dyke Show inspiration to Pam Dawber not realizing she landed the role of Mindy, these Mork & Mindy facts are out of this world. Back in the '70s... Source

Why Young Voters Shifted Toward Trump

President-elect Donald Trump made huge inroads with young voters this past election cycle. Fifty-six percent of young men aged 18-29 voted for Trump this year, a major flip from 2020 when 56% of them voted for Joe Biden. Trump also made inroads with young women, who shifted 11 points toward him compared to four years ago. While Vice President Kamala Harris ultimately won the majority of voters under 30, she won them by just six points, a quarter of the 24 percentage points Biden had from them four years prior. What can explain this massive shift in support among the youth vote from Democrats to Republicans? Prices are 20% higher now than when Biden first took office and young people are struggling to build wealth due to the burden of everyday expenses. As inflation continues to outpace wage growth and housing costs skyrocket, it’s no surprise that the economy was the No. 1 issue for young voters this election cycle. Forty percent of voters under 30 polled by The Associated Press chose the economy as their reason for voting. And they weren’t convinced Harris—or the Democrats—could fix it. “The affordability crisis is particularly biting to younger Americans trying to get their foothold in the economy,” Matt Carpenter, director of FRC Action told The Washington Stand. “As they entered the work force, they were met with rising home and grocery prices. This certainly paid a huge factor in their rightward shift.” Besides the economy, younger voters also saw the Republican ticket as the authentic ticket. This perception is in large part due to the Trump campaign’s strategy to reach younger voters online. Whether it was Trump creating a TikTok account or appearing on some of the top podcasts in the country like Joe Rogan or Theo Von, the campaign effectively won over low-propensity, young male voters by talking to them at their level. In a recent interview with The New York Times, several young people talked about why they opted for Trump over Harris. “Trump enthusiastically said yes to a three-hour, open, honest conversation with Joe Rogan, who was a former Bernie bro,” a 22-year-old voter named Jack told the paper. “I think it’s very telling about which candidate is authentic and which candidate is not.” Young voters could see through Harris’ contrived media appearances and rehearsed stump speeches. Even when she tried to mirror Trump by appearing on the left-leaning “Call Her Daddy” podcast, she appeared fake and out-of-touch with the issues voters cared about, whereas Trump increased his likeability by having genuine conversations with middle-of-the-road podcasters and influencers. Young voters also liked how normal and genuine Vice President-elect and Ohio Sen. JD Vance appeared in media interviews and podcasts. “I was so impressed by JD Vance, the way he carried himself and how normal he appeared,” a 25-year-old woman named McLane told the Times. While the Harris campaign was hoping to capitalize on “vibes” this election cycle, whether it was through the “brat” meme over the summer or the legacy media-backed “joy” campaign, ironically, Trump was the one who won the vibe check. Whether it was posing as a McDonald’s employee or driving a garbage truck, Trump signaled that he cared about the average American voter and brought dignity to their jobs and concerns about the economy. This gave his campaign an authenticity that young voters recognized. “She was just running a vibes campaign,” Brilyn Hollyhand, chair of the Republican National Committee’s Youth Advisory Council told The Hill. “With our posts, we would back that up with explaining detailed policies, because that’s something that her side wasn’t doing. Clearly, youth voters paid attention to policies and decided to not go with vibes but with the guy that actually has policies.” Originally published by The Washington Stand The post Why Young Voters Shifted Toward Trump appeared first on The Daily Signal.

CBS Fawns Over Bizarre Indigenous Filibuster in New Zealand as Role Models

Friday’s CBS Mornings embarrassed itself with a fawning segment of the bizarre and viral Māori protest in New Zealand parliament, fawning over it as a “beautiful” and “powerful” sign of confidence by women — including the leader of the Haka Dance, 22-year-old Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke — that featured co-host Vladimir Duthiers said he’s “going to save this video and show it” one day to his toddler. They were so enthralled with the protest of a bill to redefine an indigenous treaty that, in a tease for the What to Watch segment, Duthiers even did his own impression of the Haka Dance with the CBS crew telling viewers to stick around to find out why he was doing it. Duthiers gave his own cliffnotes version of why Maipi-Clarke and others deployed the Haka Dance on the floor of Parliament with others in the gallery: So, the Maori members led by this young woman, 22-year- old Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke performed the Haka. This is a ceremonial dance and they did it to delay Parliament from voting on a change in an almost 200-year-old treaty. That treaty with Britain allowed Māori tribes to retain their lands and expand their privileges in government. Now, some members of Parliament argued that it discriminates against non- indigenous New Zealanders. The vote was suspended, the two lawmakers were ordered to leave the chamber. The Haka dance is a traditional dance that was done before the men and women would go off to fight in war and those facial expressions — that eh — was done to frighten the opponent. Dutheris gushed the he “love[s] young Hana, 22-year-old” and “I am going to save this video and show it to my daughter because we can only hope to have women in our lives that on the floor of Parliament...and the way she did it confidently was beautiful.” “Powerful. That was powerful. Beautiful,” replied co-host Nate Burleson. CBS Mornings Plus co-host Adriana Diaz swooned “it is just sick” and will be “cheering for her.” Duthiers reiterated they protested because, in his explanation, “lawmakers in New Zealand are seeking to rewrite that treaty and we always know how that goes” and much like what we “experience here in the United States with our indigenous Americans.” This might be shocking, I know, but this wasn’t quite the full story. Thankfully, Townhall’s indefatigable Mia Cathell had a thorough breakdown that we’ll use as a fact-check. Cathell first described the blow-by-blow of the protest and the immediate aftermath with the house speaker tossing Maipi-Clarke and one other lawmaker, but then got down to brass tacks. “In 1840, representatives of the United Kingdom and hundreds of Māori chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, paving the way for Britain's declaration of sovereignty and the Crown colony's establishment. Under the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi, the Māori tribes were promised broad rights to retain their lands and safeguard their interests in return for ceding governance to the British,” she began, adding that the bill “would redefine the founding document to specify that those rights should apply to all New Zealanders.” Perhaps the most incredible part of this? The bill’s lead sponsor, David Seymour of the libertarian-leaning party ACT Party, is Māori himself. And perhaps as equally amusing was the fact that Cathell noted “the unpopular bill is unlikely to become law” and was put on the floor as a condition for the 11-seat ACT Party joining the conservative governing coalition. Nonetheless, Cathell said Seymour was referred to by another Māori member of Parliament as akin to a Klu Klux Klan member and caused “harm and...division” to the country. Cathell also explained the issues with the treaty’s lack of specificity has led to more than a few issues, including “ethnic quotas” and reparations (click “expand”): Seymour, who's also New Zealand's associate justice minister, argues that since the treaty's principles were never legally defined, the courts have taken creative liberty to "justify actions that are contrary to the principle of equal rights," such as unequal access to taxpayer-funded services and ethnic quotas in public institutions that run counter to the spirit of fairness for all New Zealanders regardless of ancestry. Although the treaty itself is not enshrined in law, clauses in the document guide policy today, and aspects of it have been adopted over time into the legislation. Court rulings have since greatly expanded Māori privileges, and Seymour says this priority treatment discriminates against non-indigenous citizens. The ACT Party is seeking a "democratization" of the treaty that would incorporate the voices of all New Zealanders through a democratic parliamentary process rather than via the Waitangi Tribunal, which has interpreted the treaty and prescribed policy without the electorate as a whole being democratically consulted. Anti-"colonial oppression" activists, who believe that the Māori have been historically disenfranchised despite what they were promised, have worked to instill the "Māori way of life" in New Zealand. These efforts include obtaining billion-dollar land settlements as reparations, the teaching of the Māori language in New Zealand schools, and guaranteed positions in government. Texas announces plan for advanced nuclear reactors across the state worth over $50 billion

Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the Public Utility Commission of Texas have identified 61 possible sites across the state for new nuclear reactors. A recently-released state report on Advanced Nuclear Energy is hoping to bring in over $50 billion in new economic output to Texas, along with $27 billion in income for Texas workers.Governor Abbott announced the state's new plan, saying the plants would enhance the "reliability" of the state grid and provide "affordable, dispatchable power" to residents."Texas is the energy capital of the world, and we are ready to be No. 1 in advanced nuclear power," the governor added. The Nuclear Energy Institute defines advanced nuclear reactors as smaller, more efficient reactors that are safer to build and protect than the previous generation of reactors. Underground and underwater housing can be used for advanced reactors to greater endure natural disasters.Advanced nuclear designs have been used for the newly popular small modular reactors being built privately across the country by the likes of Amazon, Microsoft, and Oracle. States like Virginia and Maryland have become popular sites for SMRs and self-sustaining commercial campuses. Texas is already home to two nuclear plants that generate over five gigawatts of electricity, which makes up about 10% of the state's grid. The state report alleged that the two plants have already displayed "resilience during extreme weather." — (@) Of the 61 possible nuclear sites identified, 21 of them are closed or closing coal sites. The report stated that replacing the coal sites, which are typically seen as bad for the environment, would be just one puzzle piece in overcoming strong environmental regulatory hurdles. In order to garner approval for the plant builds, energy officials suggested appointing a Nuclear Permitting Officer to facilitate "tailored assistance to companies seeking to build advanced nuclear reactor operations in the state."Cool— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 18, 2024 The report pinpointed a possible $700 million in costs leading up to the building of advanced nuclear reactors, using estimations based on public funding that has been awarded in other states. This included $60 million to retain and attract supply chain companies and another $350 million for design and development of small nuclear reactors.About $100 million was awarded across Kentucky, North Carolina, and Wyoming for permitting and studies, along with $40 million in South Carolina for support of nuclear workforce development. While these costs are similar to what other companies have been spending on small modular reactors across the country, those are typically used to power a company's campus and/or data centers. This means that reactors meant to power the public at large would likely come at twice the cost, especially considering how much government oversight and appointed positions the state report has recommended. For example, computer technology company Oracle announced in early September its intention to build a 1-gigawatt data center campus powered by three small modular reactors. Therefore, about 15 small modular reactors would be required to match the five gigawatts of power (10% of the grid) put out by Texas' two existing plants. Eric Hovde concedes Wisconsin Senate race, cites 'disheartening' tactics

Republican challenger Eric Hovde conceded the race to Democratic incumbent Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin on Monday. Hovde lost to the two-term incumbent by less than a percent, the AP called on November 6. Given the slim margins of the race, Hovde did not concede the race until over a week later. 'What is disheartening are the tactics used against me in this race.'"Nine months ago, I entered the race for the U.S. Senate because I love our country and I am deeply concerned about its direction," Hovde said in a video posted to X. "The results from election night were disappointing, particularly in light of the last-minute absentee ballots that were dropped in Milwaukee at 4 a.m., flipping the outcome," Hovde said. "I have heard from numerous supporters urging me to challenge the election results," Hovde said. "However, without a detailed review of all the ballots and their legitimacy, which will be difficult to obtain in the courts, the request for a recount would serve no purpose because you will just be recounting the same ballots regardless of their integrity. As a result, and my desire to not add to the political strife through a contentious recount, I decided to concede the election." Although Hovde ultimately conceded, he pointed to several tactics Democrats used that he said worked to "deceive" and "mislead" voters. Notably, Democratic operatives emboldened libertarian candidate Phillip Anderson and America First candidate Thomas Leager, who collectively drew in over 70,000 votes. "I am proud that we received more than 1.64 million votes, more than any Republican in Wisconsin history aside from President Trump's total on Tuesday night," Hovde said. "Furthermore, if not for Democratic operatives placing a phony America First candidate on the ballot to deceive voters and siphon off over 28,000 votes, I would have won this race." "Democratic operatives also supported a libertarian candidate through mail and other sources without his knowledge to strip votes away from me," Hovde continued. "Are these actions to deceive and mislead voters strengthening and protecting our democracy? Any fair-minded person would say no." Hovde also described several "disheartening" tactics used against him in the race. Hovde detailed the protests that took place outside his home before he even entered the race, mentioned "phony" lawsuits launched against his companies, and the millions of dollars' worth of ads that made "false claims" about him. "Senator Baldwin's campaign focused on getting voters to hate me," Hovde said. "Sadly, our current political system is broken," Hovde continued. "Instead of candidates debating issues and addressing voters concerns, campaigns are now about raising money, often from special interest groups, and launching attack ads with no basis in truth."Hovde closed his message by thanking his supporters and outlining his plan to move forward. "After running from morning to night for nine months and leaving it all on the field, I will take a much-needed break, then return to my businesses and foundation and find other ways to make a positive impact," Hovde said. "One thing is certain. I will always fight for the country and state that I love and work to restore the American dream. Thank you."Like Blaze News? FEMA ignoring Trump supporters in Florida is exactly why we need Matt Gaetz

Last week, Blaze News covered a story about a FEMA supervisor named Marn’i Washington who was fired due to a released report accusing her of ordering relief agents under her authority to avoid homes with Trump signs in Lake Placid, Florida. According to Washington, however, she was merely the scapegoat for FEMA’s broader discriminatory policies. “FEMA preaches avoidance first, and then de-escalation. This is not isolated. This is a colossal event of avoidance. Not just in the state of Florida. You will find avoidance in the Carolinas,” Washington said on a podcast, during which she explained that FEMA at large tends to avoid homes with Trump signs for fear of aggression. Jill Savage and Blaze News editor in chief Matthew Peterson invite Rachel Bovard, vice president of Conservative Partnership Institute, on the show to discuss the situation. “Is this problem bigger than just one employee at FEMA?” Jill asks. “This is the way the government has been operating for the last four years,” says Bovard. FEMA has “taken direction from the president of the United States, who stood in front of Independence Hall two years ago and said, ‘Anyone who supports Donald Trump is an extremist.”’ “All of the ideologues in the bureaucracy were activated to essentially make that statement by the president their government policy,” she explains. “When you think about the mission that FEMA is supposed to represent, they are supposed to be there to help Americans at the worst point in their lives, and here we have that agency ... putting partisan politics ahead of it all.” Matthew Peterson calls the event one of many examples of “how bad things have become.” However, now that Trump will return to the White House bolstered by his bold Cabinet picks, the future looks hopeful. “I’d love to know your thoughts on the picks so far,” he tells Bovard. “I think institutional Washington is losing their minds, but I actually think [Matt Gaetz] is the perfect answer to Merrick Garland,” who “turned the Department of Justice into an arm of the president’s political terror,” says Bovard. “[Garland] put Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro — two people who served in Trump's administration — in jail; he aggressively pursued peaceful pro-life protesters; he ignored the disorder in the streets and used taxpayer-funded resources to harass and prosecute and terrorize peaceful J6 protesters to the ends of the Earth. ... Those actions need to be answered with a sledgehammer, and I really do kind of feel like Matt Gaetz is maybe the perfect person to do that.” Before Gaetz can get to work as Trump’s attorney general, however, he first has to be confirmed by the Senate that just elected John Thune as its new majority leader. “What does the pick of John Thune tell you about where the Senate does want to go?” asks Jill. Bovard is a bit concerned when it comes to Thune. “John Thune, I should point out, voted to confirm Merrick Garland,” as did other Republican senators, including Mitch McConnell, John Cornyn, Thom Tillis, and Susan Collins — “all of the people you now see pearl-clutching about Matt Gaetz,” Bovard explains. She hopes they will confirm Gaetz in order to “atone for their sins of confirming Merrick Garland.” To hear more of the conversation, watch the clip above.
