Immigrants lower Sweden's grade in international competence tests

In a global survey of adults' skills in reading, arithmetic and problem solving with 31 countries and regions, Sweden comes in third place in the categories. At the same time, the Swedish results could have been significantly better if it were not for the strong demographic change.

In the OECD competence test Piaac, Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competences, skills that adults need in their professional and social life are measured. The test has been carried out twice, in 2012 and 2023.

Sweden becomes the third best country in reading ability, shared third place with the Netherlands and Norway in counting and shared third place with Norway in problem solving.

At the absolute top are Finland and Japan.

According to the OECD, Sweden's results in reading and arithmetic would have been significantly better compared to 2012 if it were not for the population change, with one of the largest increases in foreign-born among the participating countries.

At the same time, Statistics Sweden notes that one in three foreign-born people lack sufficient reading skills in the Swedish language. This means that a significant proportion of those born abroad have poorer opportunities to participate actively in working life and society.

Age and experience
Over time, Sweden has scored slightly higher in reading and arithmetic, although the difference is small and within the margin of error, and despite the increase in immigrants, the proportion of very weak readers and arithmetic has not increased in Sweden. At the same time, the percentage of high achievers in reading is at the same level and increasing in number.

In addition to a strong connection between educational level and performance, age and experience also influence. According to the survey, those born in 1989-1996 perform significantly better in reading now than when they were in their 20s, and the group has the highest score in both reading and problem solving.
