‘Failure of Leadership’: Republicans Slam FEMA Chief Over Trump Home Guidance

House lawmakers overseeing FEMA ripped into Administrator Deanne Criswell on Thursday, demanding answers after one of her employees instructed relief workers to skip the homes of Trump supporters in Florida.  In a letter from 35 Republicans on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee shared with The Daily Wire, the lawmakers said that Criswell had failed Americans through her handling of relief efforts after Hurricanes Helene and Milton. They demanded Criswell provide a briefing to discuss guidance first reported on by The Daily Wire from now-fired supervisor Marn’i Washington to bypass homes with Trump signs or flags in Lake Placid.  “In reporting that first emerged from The Daily Wire, it was revealed that a FEMA supervisor sent a best practices message to FEMA workers canvassing the Florida area impacted by Hurricane Milton, which instructed the workers to ‘avoid homes advertising Trump,’” the letter said.  The letter was signed by Transportation Committee Chair Sam Graves (R-MO) and Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management Chair Scott Perry (R-PA). They requested a briefing on the incident by December 2.  Whistleblowers told The Daily Wire that around 20 homes were skipped because of the guidance. FEMA responded to the report by saying it was an “isolated incident” and firing Washington.  The Republicans asked Criswell to provide documents on when officials first found out about the guidance and what they did when they found out about it. A whistleblower complaint was filed on the guidance on October 27, and Washington was fired on November 9.  “As the FEMA Administrator, you are responsible for leading the Nation’s efforts to prepare for, protect against, and respond to natural disasters. The Committee is troubled that under your leadership FEMA failed to aid all Americans, regardless of party affiliation,” the letter said.  “Your inability to ensure that FEMA provide relief to all Americans affected by disasters, free of discrimination, represents a substantial failure of leadership. The blatant disregard of  President-elect Trump supporters directly contradicts FEMA’s core mission and values,” they added.  The lawmakers said that FEMA’s preparedness and readiness had been degraded because of a focus on equity and climate change. They pointed to stories from North Carolina where residents have said that FEMA has been slow to respond after Hurricane Helene devastated the region.  “It is clear that, under the Biden-Harris Administration, FEMA has been ill-prepared to provide assistance and relief to many Americans in need,” they wrote. “At the briefing, FEMA should be prepared to discuss concerns related to the agency’s failure to aid Americans regardless of party affiliation, including the steps FEMA has taken to assist unaided families, policies implemented to prevent future  political discrimination, and the prevalence at which the agency fell derelict in its duty to assist victims.” Criswell is set to testify before the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management on Tuesday morning and the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday afternoon.

Sophie Turner Looks Likely to Play Lara Croft in Tomb Raider Series

News Tomb Raider Sophie Turner Looks Likely to Play Lara Croft in Tomb Raider Series By Vanessa Armstrong | Published on November 14, 2024 Credit: Helen Sloan/HBO Comment 0 Share New Share Credit: Helen Sloan/HBO Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s live-action Tomb Raider series is close to casting its Lara Croft. According to Deadline, Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner is in negotiations to play the starring role. Turner, of course, is widely known for playing Sansa Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones (pictured above). Her other credits include playing Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Dark Phoenix and, most recently, the lead in the British limited crime series, Joan. In a 2023 interview, Waller-Bridge shared her take on Croft, a character previously played by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in film adaptations of the popular video game franchise. “Having worked on Bond and having worked as an actor on Indy, I feel like I’ve been building up to this,” she said. “What if I could take the reins on an action franchise, with everything I’ve learned, with a character I adore, and also just bring back some of that ’90s vibe?” The showrunner also added that she was excited by the idea of the show being a “Trojan Horse,” where she could do “something really quite dangerous” and exciting by having a built-in audience of fans who will, she hopes, be pleased and surprised by what she brings to the series. How Turner’s potential portrayal of Lara Croft plays into that remains to be seen, and I’m curious to see her take on the character. No news yet on when the series will go into production or make its way to Prime Video. I should also note that Turner’s casting still has yet to be officially confirmed by Amazon MGM Studios, most likely because negotiations are ongoing. If those talks go smoothly, however, it’s very likely we’ll see Turner take on the Tomb Raider banner in the near future. Read an Excerpt From Lyndall Clipstone’s Tenderly, I Am Devoured

Excerpts Young Adult Read an Excerpt From Lyndall Clipstone’s Tenderly, I Am Devoured A moody, monstrously Gothic romantasy in which a young woman must bind herself to a dangerous chthonic demon… By Lyndall Clipstone | Published on November 14, 2024 Comment 0 Share New Share We’re thrilled to share an excerpt from Tenderly, I Am Devoured, a young adult gothic romantasy novel by Lyndall Clipstone, out from Henry Holt & Co. on July 1st, 2025. Expelled from her prestigious boarding school following a violent incident, eighteen-year-old Lacrimosa Arriscane returns home in disgrace to discover her family on the point of financial ruin. Desperate to save them, she accepts a marriage of convenience… to Therion, the chthonic god worshipped by Lark’s isolated coastal hometown. But when her betrothal goes horribly wrong, Lark begins to vanish from the mortal realm. Her only hope is to seek help from Alastair Felimath: the brilliant, arrogant boy who was her first heartbreak, and his alluring older sister, Camille. As the trio delve into the folklore of gods, Lark falls under the spell of the Felimath siblings.Ensnared by a fervent romance, they perform a bacchanalia with hopes the hedonistic ritual will repair the connection between Lark and her bridegroom. Instead, they draw the ire of something much darker, which seeks to destroy Therion—and Lark as well. The words echo through my mind like the ringing of the iron Saltswan bell. I feel as though I’m hallucinating again. I wait for the rush of pounding darkness, but this is strikingly, terribly real. My hands begin to shake; I close the book and press it to my chest. Thinking of smoke and chants and howls. The chamber at the bottom of the mine, the toppled brazier, spilled liquor, an echoing silence. Alastair gently takes the book from me and sets it aside. “Did you know there’s a pivotal moment in The Neriad where Naiius—the hero—rages at the gods?” I shake my head. “I only know the scene where Naiius goes into the forest; there was a Caedmon sketch of it in the gallery. It was an alternate panel for The Dusk of the Gods, but he never used it in the final version.” Camille looks between us, her mouth twisted in amusement. “I can’t believe it,” she says to me with a teasing grin. “You’re almost as much of an embarrassing nerd as Alastair.” But I’m trembling, my blood has become ice. “What does this phrase mean?” “It’s an ancient idiom, and Naiius uses it in that scene. He condemns the gods to be gone—not just from the mortal world, but the chthonic realm as well. The Salt Priest at your betrothal has done the same to Therion. You can’t speak with him. He’s been banished. Permanently.” Buy the Book Tenderly, I Am Devoured Lyndall Clipstone Buy Book Tenderly, I Am Devoured Lyndall Clipstone Buy this book from: AmazonBarnes and NobleiBooksIndieBoundTarget I stare at Alastair, wishing hopelessly for a way to dismiss his conclusion. Even Camille looks stunned, the teasing smile wiped from her face. I knot my hands into the too-long sleeves of my brother’s shirt, thinking of the visions I’ve seen—Therion, trying to reach out to me. If he is truly gone, how could that be? “I don’t believe you, Alastair. I have to try to speak with him again. I have to know—” Shakily, I pick up the obsidian mirror. I’ll take it to the altar in the grotto caves, sip from the chthonic liquor there, call to Therion just as I did on the day I promised to marry him. If that doesn’t work, I’ll go to the mine. My fingers close around the handle of the mirror. The polished surface is flat and opaque, featureless as a becalmed sea. But when I touch it, the glass begins to ripple. A slow hum starts up within me, echoing against my bones. I clasp a hand to my mouth. My fingers come away stained with indigo. Noise fills the room, a buzzing static. Pain spikes at my temples. It’s the same way I felt at the entrance to the mine when I touched the new salt. And I can’t let go of the mirror. I can’t move. I sit as still as carved marble. The light around me darkens piece by piece. Alastair tries to take the mirror from me. I tighten my hold, the motion involuntary. He clutches my wrist as he tries to work my fingers loose from the silver handle. “Lacrimosa,” he says, choked. His head bows forward. His eyes shutter closed. When he looks at me again, his irises are bright as amber. Like the eyes of a swan. Like the eyes of a god. “Lark.” The world seems to speed and slow all at once. His features shift—boy to swan to god—the planed lines of Therion’s mortal guise slipping back and forth into Alastair’s features. Distantly, I hear Camille crying out—but it’s as though she’s far away, back at Saltswan, calling our names from the library window. The space around me begins to soften. Like the world is melting away. With a sound like an indrawn breath, water cascades into the room. It pours down the walls and covers the floor, rising and rising. I struggle, trying to stand up, but tangling strands of kelp are around my chest, my waist, my throat, trapping me in place. Alastair leans over me. Everything is blurred and brushstroked, like we are in the heart of an oil painting. His teeth are clenched, his eyes bright as flames. In Therion’s voice, he says, “You are mine, Lacrimosa. I refuse to let you go.” Excerpted from Tenderly, I Am Devoured, copyright © 2024 by Lyndall Clipstone. Why Latinos Deported Harris From the White House

Latinos left the Democratic Party in a mass exodus last week, costing Vice President Kamala Harris the presidency. The 13-point Latino shift toward President-elect Donald Trump noticed along the Rio Grande indicates Harris’ campaign failed to make Latinos forget the peril caused by her and President Joe Biden’s open border. The Latino red wave surfaced in South Texas. Trump won 11 out of 13 Texas border counties. The Rio Grande Valley, with a 91% Hispanic population, flipped, creating a Republican majority for the first time in a century. The Latino base showed up for Trump, with Hispanic men ranked as the second-largest demographic group to vote red, according to NBC exit polls. America’s Latino voting bloc was previously unpredictable by political analysts until the chaos along the southern border became an issue that could no longer be ignored. The Biden-Harris administration created an invasion along the Rio Grande, which burdened communities across the nation. The unsecure border drastically increased Latino susceptibility toward transnational human trafficking for commercial sex purposes, drug trafficking, and exploitation of cheap labor. Hispanics know those tragic matters affect their community, which explains why 74% of Hispanics polled earlier this year stated the Biden-Harris administration did a bad job dealing with the immigration crisis. Instead of addressing this top concern among Latinos, Harris released a campaign promise, “Opportunity Agenda for Latino Men,” which avoided promising stricter border policies, an aspect Latino men searched for in a presidential candidate. Harris’ address to Latinos also failed to account for more than 300,000 unaccompanied alien children lost by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). U.S. Customs and Border Protection encountered over half a million illegal-alien minors, 98% of whom were of Latin American origin. The Biden-Harris administration endangered Latino children from the start when DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas repeatedly stated that unaccompanied alien children who crossed the border illegally would not be turned away. Cartels capitalized on this, often smuggling the same children through ports of entry multiple times in an endless cycle for trafficking profit. An estimated 60% of Latin American children who attempt to cross the southern border illegally, unaccompanied or with a smuggler, are abused by cartel operatives for sex or drug trafficking. Where are these children? HHS guarantees minors are placed with a sponsor. Still, the American people have no way of knowing where so many of them are because HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra has treated the children like widgets on an assembly line, demanding faster processing out the door. There are corporations in the shadows who benefit from the illegal immigration crisis because of large-scale government contracts with HHS and DHS.? MVM Inc. is a company that contracts with the federal government, receiving large sums of money in exchange for providing alien-relocation services. Under the Biden-Harris administration, DHS gave the company $824.13 million, while HHS provided an additional $582.77 million to transport immigrants here illegally from fiscal years 2021 to 2024. MVM transports illegal aliens en masse, including a significant portion of unaccompanied alien children. Illegal alien minors are often subjected to placement with dangerous sponsors due to lax vetting during the rushed process and volume of placements, according to reporting from Muckraker. Neither HHS nor MVM has provided transparency on how prospective sponsors are vetted to ensure the safety of unaccompanied alien children, despite requests by House committees. Ultimately, Harris fell short of assuring Latinos that a Harris-Walz presidency would benefit them. The Left’s management of the southern border created discord throughout America and led to a nationwide plea for a safe and secure border. That plea was heard in the 2024 presidential election, with some of its loudest voices coming from the Latino community.
