When you’re a cattle farmer, it’s a pretty routine life. You let the cows out into the pasture in the morning and bring them in at dinnertime. They get some hay, graze on the grass, and frolic happily — until the bull does something silly that requires a rescue. It took two tranquilizer darts and the efforts of Mitch and the vet to rescue the bull. Brutus had no injuries from his adventure, but Mitch didn’t fare as well. We think that “ride” should qualify Mitch for the rodeo circuit. Between chasing Brutus around the field and riding the bale feeder, Mitch got quite a workout. From helping locate an elderly dementia patient to finding a seven-year-old child taken at knifepoint, K9 Bo proves that he is worthy of this year’s “American Hero Dog” title. On November 08, the American Humane announced police dog Bo as the winner of the 14th annual American Humane Hero Dog Awards. Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of American Humane said, “We are so excited to name Bo as American Humane’s latest Hero Dog, a distinction that is well-deserved for him and his handler David.” “In a short time, Bo and David have done extraordinary work. The American Humane shares Bo’s “most touching moment” came in May of this year when he tracked and found a seven-year-old child who had been taken at knifepoint. Since stars are necessary for life as we know it, this new model estimates the probability of life emerging in both our universe and others, based on varying levels of dark energy. Instead of calculating the exact number of life-bearing planets, it compares the odds of an intelligent observer existing in universes with different properties. This model suggests that a typical observer might expect a universe with higher dark energy density than ours. The study, published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, reveals that dark energy’s influence impacts the formation of stars and galaxies, essential for life. In universes with the most efficient star formation, around 27% of matter would become stars—slightly higher than the 23% seen in our own universe. Dr. Daniele Sorini from Durham University explains that dark energy’s role in expanding the universe, balanced by gravity’s pull, enables the creation of stable regions where stars and planets can form and life can evolve.
