Veterinary Appreciation Day 2024: When &; How to Celebrate

Veterinarians do a lot for our pets. They make them feel better when they’re ill‚ keep them calm during appointments‚ and so much more‚ and as pet parents‚ we appreciate them greatly. But did you know there’s an actual day dedicated to appreciating your vet? Veterinary Appreciation Day is June 18th and is devoted to thanking these unsung heroes! How did Veterinary Appreciation Day come about? How is it observed? Here’s everything you should know about this day so you can take the opportunity next time it rolls around to truly appreciate all the wonderful things your pet’s vet does! What is Veterinary Appreciation Day? Veterinary Appreciation Day came about in 2015 when it was established by pet insurance provider Trupanion. Trupanion dedicated June 18th of each year to honor and appreciate all veterinary heroes. This doesn’t just include the vets who see your pets but also everyone on their staff‚ from the front desk to the veterinary assistants. All of the people working in vet offices play a key role in keeping our pets whole and healthy; as such‚ they deserve a day dedicated to thanking them! Image Credit: Ground Picture‚ Shutterstock How Can I Observe Veterinary Appreciation Day? We’re sure you thank your vet and their staff after each visit‚ but on Veterinary Appreciation Day‚ you can go a step further. Here are just a few ways you can observe this day and show your pet’s vet and their office how much you appreciate them! 1. Trupanion’s truthankyou Nothing shows appreciation like free scrubs! Your vet and their staff probably go through scrubs quickly‚ and constantly replacing them can get pricey. So this year‚ Trupanion launched truthankyou‚ which is designed to rally pet parents to appreciate and uplift their veterinarians (and all staff) on June 18th‚ as well as the rest of the year. To take advantage of truthankyou‚ you simply need to share with Trupanion your story of how a veterinarian positively impacted your pet’s life. Vet professionals who receive truthankyous will receive gift cards to buy new scrubs! 2. Remember to Practice Patience Veterinarian offices are busy places‚ which sometimes means there are long waits for appointments or extended wait times in the waiting room. Remember to practice patience at your vet’s office when things are exceptionally busy. Everyone is doing their best to see pets in a timely manner‚ so don’t take out any frustration with long waits on the staff or veterinarians. 3. Be Kind This goes along with remembering to be patient‚ but veterinarian professionals are often overworked and underappreciated‚ leading to them doing their best with staff shortages and more. Unfortunately‚ some pet parents can get a bit snappy when things don’t go exactly as they plan and take it out on the staff (especially those manning the front desks). Remember that the staff at your vet’s office is taking care of dozens of other animals‚ not only your own‚ and are keeping up with things as best they can. So‚ be kind to them instead of berating them because you aren’t in and out of the office as quickly as you’d hoped. Image Credit: Monkey Business Images‚ Shutterstock 4. Bring Treats to Your Vet’s Office It isn’t uncommon for veterinary professionals to skip breaks or even lunch because they’re dealing with patients. Bringing some tasty treats will not only give them something to snack on if they can’t take a real break but also boost morale. You could bake cookies‚ buy donuts‚ or even bring a fruit tray for your vet’s office. However‚ check with your vet’s office first to ensure that food gifts will be accepted‚ and keep in mind that all treats should be labeled with the ingredients they contain in case of food allergies! If food isn’t an option to take to your vet’s office‚ thank you cards with pictures of your pet are always appreciated. Gift cards might be another option‚ too. 5. Positive Reviews What better way to appreciate your vet and their staff than by leaving them a positive review? If you’ve had a wonderful experience at your vet’s office recently‚ then go online and leave a great review! You can leave one on social media‚ the vet’s Google Business Profile‚ Yelp‚ TrustPilot‚ and many other sites. Also‚ spread the news of how fabulous your vet’s office is by referring your friends and family to them. 6. Listen to Your Vet Another excellent way to show your vet you appreciate them is to listen to them. Your vet went to school for several years to earn their degree‚ and though you might have read a wonderful article online about what ails your pet‚ your vet knows more. So‚ listen to them and respect their knowledge. Image Credit: goodluz‚ Shutterstock Final Thoughts You should be sure to thank your vet and their staff each and every time you visit. But you can also show how much you appreciate them on Veterinary Appreciation Day. There are several ways to observe this day‚ such as bringing your vet’s office snacks or thank you cards‚ leaving positive reviews online‚ practicing patience‚ and being kind when you visit. No matter how you show your appreciation‚ your veterinarian professionals will be happy you thought of them! National Lost Pet Prevention Month 2024: 8 Ways to Protect Your Cat

There are few experiences more tragic than losing a pet. No cat owner wants to endure the heartbreak that comes with losing their beloved pet‚ but sadly‚ many do. Whether you have experienced this grief or not‚ you can work to prevent such losses in the future by recognizing Lost Pet Prevention Month. Lost Pet Prevention Month is observed through the month of July. Its purpose is to raise awareness of missing pets and prevent the loss of more animal companions. This campaign is a valuable part of ensuring that our beloved cats do not become a part of a tragic statistic. Why Was National Lost Pet Prevention Month Established? If you had to guess what the busiest day of the year for animal shelters was‚ what would you pick? It may seem strange to think that there is one day out of the year that sees a consistent‚ massive increase in surrendered or stray animals‚ but it’s the truth. In the United States‚ July 5th is the busiest day of the year for animal shelters. It is largely because the loud celebrations of the Fourth of July can startle pets‚ causing them to flee at a moment’s notice. In addition‚ families take more trips during the summer. Pets that are taken along for the ride may be stressed by their new environment‚ causing them to run away. The frequency of lost pets during this month caught the attention of PetHub‚ an organization dedicated to creating tools that track down missing pets. In 2014‚ they launched the first-ever Lost Pet Prevention Month to spread awareness and prevent more pets from getting lost. Lost Pet Prevention Month helps inform and equip cat owners with resources to keep their pets safe. Image Credit: StockMediaSeller‚ Shutterstock The Tragic Reality of Lost Cats Each year‚ around 6.3 million animals are delivered to animal shelters nationwide. Out of this total‚ 3.2 million of them are cats. Most of the cats are strays‚ surrenders‚ and rescues. Due to the immense flood of incoming cats‚ only 2.1 million are adopted annually. Other worrying statistics include: Out of 810‚000 shelter animals returned to their owners‚ only 100‚000 are cats. 530‚000 cats are euthanized each year Twice as many animals are delivered to shelters as strays or lost pets compared to the number of those surrendered by their owners Cats make up over half of euthanized animals in shelters each year. The statistics are concerning to any animal lover‚ but especially to cat owners. To prevent your beloved pet from becoming such a tragic statistic‚ you can take action to prevent your cat from becoming lost. How to Prevent Your Cat From Getting Lost There are plenty of ways to keep your cat safe. By checking off the following steps‚ you can rest easier at night‚ knowing that your cat is unlikely to become lost. 1. Keep Your Cat Indoors There are many benefits to making your cat an indoor-only cat. First‚ the risk of physical dangers decreases significantly since they are unlikely to encounter wild animals‚ territorial cats and dogs‚ unkind humans‚ or cars. In addition‚ indoor cats are less likely to develop infectious diseases. 2. Put Collars and ID Tags on Your Cat Even if your cat is indoor-only‚ it is best to have some form of identification on your cat‚ just in case. Cats can be sneaky escape artists when they want to be‚ so don’t rule out the possibility of them slipping through the door. Cats with collars and ID tags can be easily returned home if found by a stranger. Make sure that your cat’s ID tag has their name‚ your name‚ your address‚ and your telephone number. This ensures that whoever finds your cat can contact you and bring them home. Image Credit: stockelements‚ Shutterstock 3. Microchip Your Cat Pet owners should also have their cats microchipped. Microchips contain codes that can be read at vet offices or shelters‚ telling them who the cat belongs to. Just be sure to have your cat’s microchip updated if you move! 4. Be Aware of Your Cat in Chaotic Environments Cats can become easily frazzled‚ especially when their home is overrun with chaos. If you have visitors in your home‚ your cat may feel threatened and bolt out the door. To prevent that‚ plan ahead. Keep your cat in a quiet‚ secure room where visitors will not enter. Depending on the length of the visit‚ give your cat toys‚ food‚ water‚ and a litter box to ensure all of their needs are met. This will reduce their stress and encourage them to stay right where they are. 5. Ensure Your Home is Secure If there is a way for your cat to escape your home‚ they will find it. Make sure all windows and doors are securely latched. Your cat should not be able to push their way through. If you let your cat go outside‚ ensure they are kept in an enclosed area with no means of escape. This means examining your fences or other barriers to ensure that there are no weak points. 6. Use a Carrier or Leash When Leaving the Home During vet appointments or other events that cause you to leave the home with your cat‚ be prepared. Use a carrier or leash to transport your cat to and from the home. Image Credit: Helena Zezulkova‚ Shutterstock 7. Train Your Cat to Come When Called Cats may be independent and aloof‚ but that doesn’t mean they cannot be trained. By training your cat to come when called‚ you can maintain better control if they begin to wander. 8. Have a Plan for Emergencies Natural disasters can happen at a moment’s notice‚ so having a plan in place can keep you and your cat safe. Having animal first aid kits‚ feline travel supplies‚ and microchipping your cat are great ways to keep them safe in an emergency. Final Thoughts No pet owner wants to experience the grief that comes with losing a beloved cat. That is why Lost Pet Prevention Month exists; it provides pet owners with the resources needed to keep their companions safe. When July rolls around‚ consider getting involved with Lost Pet Prevention Month by posting on social media or volunteering at your local animal shelter. Does Health Monitoring Cat Litter Work? Vet Reviewed Facts &; FAQ

The post Does Health Monitoring Cat Litter Work? Vet Reviewed Facts &; FAQ by Kerry-Ann Kerr appeared first on Catster. Copying over entire articles infringes on copyright laws. You may not be aware of it‚ but all of these articles were assigned‚ contracted and paid for‚ so they aren't considered public domain. However‚ we appreciate that you like the article and would love it if you continued sharing just the first paragraph of an article‚ then linking out to the rest of the piece on Catster.com. Click to Skip Ahead How Does it Work? Is it Reliable? Is it for You? Downsides to Consider Approximately 46.5 million households in the United States own a cat‚ and if you’re part of this statistic‚ chances are you’ve stumbled across an advert for health-monitoring cat litter. The product changes color in response to the presence of specific markers in a cat’s urine that will help owners spot early signs of a health problem. But how reliable is health monitoring cat litter? Owning a pet can be pricey anyway‚ so it’s a good idea to be sure before buying a product that might not work. Health monitoring litter can work‚ but it isn’t foolproof. Thus‚ it should only be used as a tool and never as a diagnosis. Below‚ we’ll take a closer look at how this cat litter works and how you can benefit from it. How Does Health Monitoring Cat Litter Work? More than one brand produces health-monitoring cat litter‚ but many work similarly. The litter is made up of light‚ silica gel that gives it an overall “crystal” look. This gel is incredibly absorbent‚ so it’s functional as a basic cat litter‚ but it’s also designed to change color based on various factors‚ such as the urine’s pH level. The thinking behind this is that the color changes might alert you to issues with the urine worthy of seeking veterinary help. Image Credit: Pixel-Shot‚ Shutterstock Is Health Monitoring Cat Litter Reliable? Health monitoring cat litter will let you know in real-time that your cat’s urine has changed. For instance‚ it may show that pH levels have changed‚ even if it doesn’t tell you why. Dog owners tend to learn more about the toilet habits of their pets than cat owners because the former are usually with their dogs when they relieve themselves. Cats are a little more self-sufficient in this area. This sometimes makes the veterinarian’s question about whether you’ve noticed anything different about your cat’s litter box habits lately a little trickier to answer. Cat litter that changes color may help you to answer this question better. However‚ cats‚ unlike dogs‚ don’t tend to have many changes in their urine pH with infections or urinary crystals or stones‚ so these litters might be more helpful in theory than in actuality. Therefore‚ it’s important to note that results aren’t always accurate. Is Health Monitoring Cat Litter for You? While health monitoring cat litter shouldn’t be relied on for answers‚ it can certainly be a beneficial aid. So‚ how could you benefit the most from color-changing cat litter? Speak with your veterinarian to determine if it might be a worthwhile addition‚ even temporarily‚ to your litter arsenal. The following instances might be some times to consider using the litter: Cats with health problems: If your cat is prone to health problems‚ such as UTIs or cystitis‚ being aware there is blood in the urine before it becomes a big problem‚ could be beneficial. Older cats: Older female cats are often more likely to develop UTIs. Diabetes: Cats with diabetes can benefit from checking for sugar in the urine. Not all health monitoring litters check for sugar or work well even if they do‚ so other options may be available such as urine test sticks from your vet. Image Credit: Mesa Watthanaphichai‚ Shutterstock Are There Any Downsides to Consider? Finding the perfect cat litter can be difficult‚ especially if you have a fussy kitty. So‚ if your cat likes their current cat litter‚ you might be unwilling to change. Silica gel can also irritate some cat’s paws‚ so the change might not even be within your control. You should also remember that some health-monitoring cat litter isn’t available in all local stores yet‚ so you will have to get it online in some cases‚ depending on where you live. There is also the cost to consider since health-monitoring litter carries a heftier price tag than traditional litter. Some are additives that are only available through your veterinarian‚ as well. If you are unsure if this cat litter is for you‚ your vet can offer advice based on your cat’s health care needs. Final Thoughts Health-monitoring cat litter can serve a purpose in some situations‚ as long as the results are taken with a grain of salt. Don’t expect this cat litter to replace answers you will get from your veterinarian. If you want to use the litter to aid you and your vet in tackling a particular health problem‚ it may be an option‚ but beware that it can have pitfalls‚ as well. Ultimately‚ your vet is the best resource for keeping your cat healthy. King Clone: In The Mojave Desert Lives One Of The Oldest Organisms In The World

In the Mojave desert lives a creosote bush ring called "King Clone"‚ thought to be one of the oldest living organisms on Earth. The clonal colony – a group of genetically identical plants that all originate from a single ancestor – is thought to have begun growing 11‚700 years ago‚ around the time human agriculture began. To test the plant's age‚ researchers measured how long it takes for the bushes to grow outwards in a ring‚ as well as radiocarbon dating the center of the ring itself. Both methods led to the conclusion that they were studying a very old bush indeed. In fact‚ Frank Vasek – a professor at the University of California‚ Riverside‚ who dated the creosote ring – believed that the bush was one of the first life forms to expand across the Mojave Desert after the last ice age.        While the original central bush died‚ the bushes around it are direct clones of the original. Slowly‚ the root system of the original plant grew outwards and new clones grew‚ slowly moving outwards to form the 22 by 8 meter (72 by 26 foot) ring we see today.Though impressively old‚ it is not the oldest organism on Earth. One of the oldest is Pando‚ a colony of 47‚000 quaking aspen clones in Utah‚ thought to be 14‚000 years old.
