EXCLUSIVE: DOJ Advised DC Medical Examiner to Dispose of Aborted Baby Bodies‚ Lawyer Says

FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL: The Department of Justice reportedly advised the Washington‚ D.C. Medical Examiner to discard the remains of aborted preemie-sized babies‚ according to an attorney with the Thomas More Society. Those baby remains are from an abortion clinic in Foggy Bottom‚ a neighborhood of D.C. Pro-life activists believe the baby bodies are evidence that a D.C. abortionist was performing illegal abortions‚ but for two years now‚ D.C. authorities have stonewalled any questions about the babies’ deaths. “Just today‚ I got a call from the medical examiner’s office indicating that the DOJ has advised them that there is no reason to keep those babies anymore‚” attorney Martin Cannon‚ who is representing pro-life activists charged by the DOJ‚ told The Daily Signal on a phone call late Monday evening. “And the medical examiner’s office accordingly tells me that if we don’t have an order to the contrary‚ by the end of this week‚ a court order‚ they will dispose of the babies.” The DOJ and the D.C. Medical Examiner did not immediately respond to requests for comment for this story. Cannon said that he received a call from the D.C. Medical Examiner’s office on Monday related to the case of Lauren Handy‚ one of the pro-life activists he is representing. Handy is a pro-life activist charged by the DOJ with violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act when she sought to prevent the abortions of unborn babies by blocking women from accessing a D.C. abortion clinic in 2020. A federal jury found Handy and four other pro-life activists guilty in August‚ and Handy is currently awaiting sentencing in an Alexandria‚ Virginia jail. Cannon‚ who was in D.C. on Monday visiting Handy and her fellow pro-life activists‚ had been in communication with a forensic pathologist who was considering examining the babies ahead of the activists’ trial. “I had the agreement of the medical examiner to accommodate that‚” Cannon said of the forensic pathologist’s examination. But shortly before Handy’s trial‚ he said‚ the pathologist became unable to do the examination. “The condition of those babies and the circumstances under which they died is still relevant to the case‚” he pointed out. “It’s pertinent to sentencing. And I’ve been making some efforts lately to find another pathologist and see what we can do. And‚ of course‚ I have advised the medical examiner’s office of that.” In light of the medical examiner’s call‚ he questioned why the medical examiner’s office would take “such stark marching orders from the DOJ.” “If I understand the structure of things correctly‚ there’s no real reason the DOJ should have such sway over the examiner’s office‚” he said. “Beyond Lauren’s case‚ there is a general need to have these babies examined. There is literally exactly a 50% chance that two of these babies … there’s a 50% chance that each of them was born alive and left to die… There’s some chance that the others were subject to illegal partial birth abortions.” “The DOJ knows this‚” Cannon said. “Those are federal crimes.” The attorney warned that in order for the baby bodies to be preserved‚ lawmakers on Capitol Hill that have the authority to investigate the matter “ought to do it immediately” and issue a letter to the medical examiner’s office stating that there is going to be an investigation and ordering the medical examiner not to dispose of the babies. “I think that would solve the problem‚” he said. “And then‚ of course‚ we get an investigation.” In March 2022‚ the DOJ charged Handy and eight others with “conspiracy against rights and a [Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances] Act offense.” Handy has said that she was motivated to stop abortions from occurring inside Washington Surgi-Clinic after she viewed an undercover video published by the pro-life group Live Action that allegedly showed abortionist Cesare Santangelo discussing how he would allow babies to die if they were accidentally delivered during abortions. In March 2022‚ Handy and her colleague Terrisa Bukovinac discovered the bodies of five preemie-sized aborted babies’ bodies in a box of fetal remains outside the Foggy Bottom-based abortion facility. That box also contained over a hundred pulverized remains of first-trimester babies‚ they said. The District does not have any laws that regulate how late during pregnancy a baby can be aborted. So when the babies’ bodies were originally brought to light‚ D.C. police shrugged off the matter.  Ashan Benedict‚ the Metropolitan Police Department’s executive assistant chief of police‚ went so far as to tell reporters in April 2022 that the babies appeared to have been aborted “in accordance with D.C. law.”  Police have repeatedly told The Daily Signal since then that the case is still “under investigation.” Authorities will not share whether autopsies have been performed on the babies’ remains. The MPD confirmed in early August that the investigation is still open. The mayor’s office has completely stonewalled questions about the babies. Even the office of the chief medical examiner for the District of Columbia directs queries to the mayor’s office—specifically‚ to Dora Taylor-Lowe‚ who refuses to answer The Daily Signal’s requests for comment.  It remains unclear whether autopsies have been performed on the bodies of the five babies‚ whose bodies were photographed by Bukovinac. (Warning: These images are graphic and disturbing.) And though D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser refused to address the possibility that Santangelo was criminally aborting late-term babies in the nation’s capital‚ she did accuse Handy of “tampering with fetal remains” in an April 2022 letter to Republican lawmakers highlighting that Handy herself faced FACE Act charges for blocking the entrance to a D.C. abortion clinic in October 2020. Handy’s involvement in the discovery of the babies‚ as well as her participation in the October 2020 “blockade‚” according to Bowser‚ are potentially “serious violations of federal law.” Have an opinion about this article? NewsBusters Podcast: Late-Night Jesters Beat the Bongos for Bidenomics

The late-night comedy shows sound like they all received an email from the Biden campaign requesting they tout the latest economic numbers. There's really nothing funny about growth in the Gross Domestic Product‚ or oil production‚ or manufacturing jobs. But the comedians tried to apply their comedic skills and strategies to give Biden a PR win with low-information voters: -- Saturday Night Live over the weekend had a little joke about how the economy is booming‚ but Fox News could only obsess over illegal aliens and transgender activism.  -- CBS host Stephen Colbert pulled out the bongo drums on CBS and pretended to be a beatnik to try to make it cool to like Bidenomics. This‚ like his "Vax Scene" dancers sketch from 2021‚ carried a Sixties vibe‚ like he's watching reruns of The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. -- NBC host Jimmy Fallon‚ who's less political than the others‚ nevertheless tried to impress one of his band members with all the good news‚ and the man kept saying "Say whaaaat?" One of the headlines on Colbert's show was goofy: "The vibecession is over because the economy now slays." It was a Washington Post opinion-section newsletter by Drew Goins. In discussing Biden's primary challengers‚ Goins wrote‚ "If a Democratic primary falls in the forest but the DNC doesn’t allocate any delegates accordingly‚ does it even make a sound? No sane challenger would take on Biden in the committee’s tailor-made sweep of states he’s strong in." But MSNBC's The Weekend granted an interview on Sunday to Biden challenger Dean Phillips‚ Democratic congressman from Minnesota. Michael Steele asked him bluntly‚ "What the hell you doing?" Phillips said Biden shouldn't have run for re-election‚ and hammered the White House for hiding Biden. "This notion of encapsulating him -- don't debate‚ don't appear in front of voters‚ don't do anything unscripted‚ don't do interviews‚ don't do town halls -- he's gonna have to! And when people see it‚ it's going to be REALLY difficult to overcome." As Phillips suggested‚ Democrats are much more pessimistic about Biden in private than they are in public. On television‚ they have to make jokes about how wonderful he's doing.  Enjoy the podcast below‚ or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Video shows mob attacking trucker outside convenience store; South Carolina police say it may be a hate crime

South Carolina police said that a trucker was attacked by a mob outside of a Circle-K convenience store in Spartanburg‚ and they are considering hate crime charges. The Spartanburg Police Department said officers were called to the store at the intersection of East Main Street and Drayton Road on Dec. 20 at about 3 a.m. When they arrived‚ they were told that a Circle-K delivery driver was attacked by three people. “My understanding is that he had been inside the store but then came outside the store back to his tanker truck. He worked for Circle K as a the delivery driver‚ dropping fuel in the underground tanks‚” said Spartanburg Police Maj. Art Littlejohn. Police were able to obtain footage of the attack from a Ring doorbell camera at a nearby residence. “You can’t see it clearly because it happens behind two of the tanks‚ but they jumped on him‚ they ended hitting him several times in his face in his head and shoulder‚” Littlejohn explained. Police do not believe the victim and the attackers knew each other before the incident‚ and it appears that the attack was unprovoked. “Typically people who are involved in an incident like this‚ assault and battery‚ they know the person‚ it’s usually not a stranger; but in this case it doesn’t appear that victim knew the suspects at all‚” Littlejohn added. Police are still investigating the motive for the attack‚ but because of racial slurs heard on the video‚ they are considering investigating it as a hate crime. “We are investigating it as you would say an assault and battery by a mob right now‚” Littlejohn said‚ "the possible hate crime comes in based on the language that is in some of the reports or some of the things that we have heard on the video camera‚ some of the racial slurs that we heard on the video tape so that’s one of the angles that the investigators are looking at." Police are asking for help from the public in identifying the suspects based on descriptions of their cars. “A black SUV and a gray or silver sedan‚ a couple of the guys got into the black SUV that leaves the area and there’s a gray car with black wheels no hubcaps that also leaves the scene‚" said Littlejohn. Fed chair Jerome Powell says government is on 'unsustainable fiscal path'

Federal Reserve Chair System board of governors chair Jerome Powell noted during an interview for "60 Minutes" that in the long term‚ the government is on an "unsustainable fiscal path‚" which he explained "means that the debt is growing faster than the economy."Interviewer Scott Pelley suggested that Powell is worried about the issue. "Over the long run‚ of course it does‚" Powell said‚ acknowledging his concern. He noted that "effectively we're borrowing from future generations."According to fiscaldata.treasury.gov‚ the country's national debt is currently more than $34.1 trillion.Powell said regarding staples such as bread‚ milk‚ and eggs‚ "Prices are substantially higher than they were before the pandemic‚" adding‚ "we think that's a big reason why people ... have been relatively dissatisfied with what is otherwise a pretty good economy." In a post on X‚ Peter Schiff declared‚ "When it comes to our dire fiscal situation‚ #Powell is wrong. We're not just on an unsustainable path. We've already arrived at an unsustainable destination. As with Wile E. Coyote‚ we've already run past the edge of the fiscal cliff. It's just that we haven't looked down yet." Some U.S. lawmakers have been sounding the alarm about the country's ever-expanding debt."Our deteriorating fiscal health and our ballooning national debt pose the greatest threat to American economic security‚" GOP Rep. Randy Feenstra of Iowa declared in a social media post. "Our national debt is over $34 trillion. We need to stop borrowing money from our enemies‚ stop printing money out of thin air‚ and stop spending money that we don't have‚" he had noted in another post."Reminder: the U.S. is over $34.1 TRILLION in national debt. Our country cannot continue down this debt death spiral‚" GOP Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina noted. — (@) Like Blaze News?
