New York City‚ under the direction of Mayor Eric Adams‚ is set to begin a $53 million program that will give illegal immigrant families who have arrived in the Big Apple a prepaid credit card. The Immediate Response Card program‚ which will be run by New Jersey company Mobility Capital Finance‚ will begin by giving around 500 illegal immigrant families a credit card to pay for food‚ The New York Post reported. The pilot program will replace the food service offered to them at the short-term shelter set up at the Roosevelt Hotel. The initiative will work like the state’s food assistance program‚ and illegal immigrant families will be instructed to only use the prepaid credit cards at grocery stores‚ convenience stores‚ and supermarkets. The cards will be refilled every 28 days‚ and families have to sign an affidavit promising to spend the credit card funds only on food and baby supplies. Funds on the credit cards will vary depending on the size of the family‚ but a family of four could receive up to $1‚000 a month‚ according to the Post. The Adams administration said that the pilot program will save New York City taxpayers money as the government hopes to expand the prepaid credit card program to all illegal immigrant families in the city‚ which is an estimated 15‚000 people. “Not only will this provide families with the ability to purchase fresh food for their culturally relevant diets and the baby supplies of their choosing‚ but the pilot program is expected to save New York City more than $600‚000 per month‚ or more than $7.2 million annually‚” said Kayla Mamelak‚ a spokeswoman for Mayor Adams. Under the current assistance program‚ the city is paying around $11 per meal for illegal immigrants housed in hotels‚ and some illegal immigrants have complained to the Post about the meals‚ saying they would rather cook their own food in their rooms. The pilot program will launch as Adams continues to call on the federal government to do more to stop the flow of illegal immigrants coming to NYC. The Democratic mayor‚ who once boasted of the Big Apple’s “sanctuary city” status‚ has blamed Texas Governor Greg Abbott for busing illegal immigrants to his doorstep and has sued bus companies for their role in transporting the illegal immigrants from the southern border. Adams also recently slashed police and education budgets to deal with the crisis‚ saying that without federal help‚ the cuts would “only be the beginning.” Since 2022‚ over 150‚000 illegal immigrants have trekked to New York City after taking advantage of President Joe Biden’s lax border policies. President Biden’s refusal to enforce our southern border has wreaked havoc in Texas and it is spreading across the country. Texas has boldly taken matters into its own hands to protect its citizens. The conflict between Texas and the Federal government is coming to a head with the Supreme Court‚ at least initially‚ siding with the Biden administration. No one can predict exactly what will happen‚ but we are certainly heading toward a tipping point in American history. Last week‚ 25 governors from around the country signed a statement of solidarity with Gov. Abbott and the state of Texas‚ supporting Texas’ right and duty to secure the southern border with Mexico. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen anything like this in American politics. Even the very moderate Gov. Chris Sununu from New Hampshire signed on to the letter. According to the statement signed by the governors and issued jointly: President Biden and his Administration have left Americans and our country completely vulnerable to unprecedented illegal immigration pouring across the Southern border. Instead of upholding the rule of law and securing the border‚ the Biden Administration has attacked and sued Texas for stepping up to protect American citizens from historic levels of illegal immigrants‚ deadly drugs like fentanyl‚ and terrorists entering our country.  It is not just the states who are rising up to counter the lawless Biden administration‚ there are confirmed reports of vigilantes engaging (and more forming) to stop this invasion. This is not simply an isolated incident of federal misuse of power bringing the country to the verge of coming apart. This travesty at our border‚ pitting states against a seemingly united front of federal and judicial power‚ may very well be the spark that will fracture our nation. Or can we avert this calamity? Thanks to the wisdom of our founders‚ who anticipated existential conflicts between Washington and the states‚ the answer lies in our Constitution. It may surprise some to learn that our founders believed in federalism and a system of checks and balances. That’s why in Article V of the Constitution they gave the states the ultimate authority to counter a tyrannical federal government. Today‚ out of the 34 necessary states‚ 19 have passed an application for a convention of states under Article V to adopt amendments that would restrain the scope and power of the federal government. Under this application‚ an amendment could (and should) be proposed and ratified allowing the states joint jurisdiction over our international borders with respect to border crossings. The states should be specifically enabled to pass and enforce laws to prevent people from entering their state and the country illegally. Under our Constitution‚ it is clear that the states don’t need to beg the federal government to protect their legitimate sovereign interests‚ like protecting the safety of their people. Article V of the Constitution gives the states the power to amend the Constitution to protect the people from both federal abuse or misuse of power without the permission or involvement of the President or Congress. If 15 more state legislatures would assert their authority‚ Texas could go from razor wire and court pleadings to giving themselves the power to protect their citizens. The founders most feared an authoritarian central government‚ so they created a Constitution where the states‚ not the federal government‚ were at the top of the food chain. They also realized that such steps should not be taken on a whim or without broad consensus‚ so any amendment proposed at a convention of states would need to be ratified by 38 states to be added to the constitution. With all due respect to the states supporting Texas‚ a letter complaining to the president when the states hold the right to correct this problem themselves‚ is being seen for what it is‚ weakness not strength. For decades‚ states have let the federal government run roughshod over them and their citizens. It should come as no surprise that the people are leading the charge and forcing state politicians to finally push back. Target removed a “Black History Month” product from its shelves this week after a TikTok video went viral showing three Civil Rights leaders on the item had been misidentified. The video posted by Las Vegas high school teacher Tierra Espy showed that photos of Carter G. Woodson‚ W.E.B. DuBois‚ and Booker T. Washington in a magnetic learning activity all had the wrong names under them‚ the Associated Press reported. After Epsy posted her video pointing out the flaws on Tuesday‚ Target confirmed that it would be removing the item from all its stores and its website. The AP reported that the magnetic activity appeared to be made by Bendon‚ an Ohio-based children’s publisher. “We will no longer be selling this product in stores or online‚” the retail giant said in a statement. “We’ve also ensured the product’s publisher is aware of the errors.” Espy told the AP that she bought the learning activity at the end of January hoping to hand it out to her children‚ but she quickly discovered the error after opening it up at home. According to the Arizona Humane Society on Facebook‚ the Russos came by with treats and toys for every single pooch at the Nina Mason Pulliam South Mountain Campus. Beloved wife and mother Hollyann Russo passed away from pancreatic cancer‚ so her family decided to do something beautiful in her honor.
