Biden Admin Launches Narcotics ‘Working Group’ With China

The Biden administration has formed a “working group” with the Chinese Communist Party to counter a growing global narcotics and fentanyl crisis‚ the State Department announced. Multiple U.S. government departments—including State‚ Homeland Security‚ Justice‚ and Treasury—will work with Beijing to counter the global production and trafficking of narcotics‚ specifically fentanyl‚ according to a press release Thursday from the State Department. China is chiefly responsible for shipping fentanyl precursors into Mexico‚ and those ingredients are then made into a final product and trafficked into the U.S.‚ killing scores of Americans every year‚ according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The U.S.-China working group “complements other ongoing efforts by the State Department to counter the scourge of fentanyl‚ including the Global Coalition to Address Synthetic Drug Threats‚” the State Department said in its announcement. “It is a mechanism for ongoing bilateral communication and policy and law enforcement coordination to support and implement concrete enforcement actions and exchange information on counternarcotics efforts‚ which will help to save lives in the United States and around the world.” BIDEN: "We're talking about fentanyl at the border…I speak with the President of Mexico 'When you stop sending guns to us.' We are sending…assault weapons to Mexico…They're asking us…cut it off at the border. What in God's name are we becoming if we don't do this?!" pic.twitter.com/7iY8ERSfuN— Daily Caller (@DailyCaller) June 16‚ 2023 Delegates from U.S. agencies traveled to Beijing in late January for talks with Chinese officials on how to address the crisis‚ including through policy enactments‚ law enforcement‚ and shared cooperation‚ according to the State Department. A top counternarcotics official in Beijing evaded responsibility for China’s massive role in the U.S. fentanyl crisis days before the delegation arrived‚ claiming that the problem stemmed from a high American demand for the drug. “The crisis in the U.S. is not manufactured by China; rather‚ its roots lie within the United States itself‚” Yu Haibin‚ a senior Chinese counternarcotics official‚ said Jan. 26. Chinese leader Xi Jinping discussed the fentanyl issue with and President Joe Biden on the sidelines of an international summit in San Francisco in November‚ the first meeting between the two world leaders in roughly a year. Xi promised Biden that he would begin taking steps to crack down on fentanyl within his own borders. Fentanyl killed over 105‚000 people in America between February 2022 and January 2023‚ according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fentanyl is highly addictive and 100 times more potent than morphine; one kilogram of the drug can kill nearly half a million people‚ according to the DEA. The State Department didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Originally published by the Daily Caller News Foundation Have an opinion about this article? Igniting an Appreciation for Abraham Lincoln in Children

Igniting an Appreciation for Abraham Lincoln in Children

Historians and the general public regularly rank Abraham Lincoln as America’s greatest president. There is little doubt that he is widely admired for the work he did to end slavery and preserve the Union. But beyond these two important points‚ most Americans know little else about Lincoln’s life. A 2013 poll by Participant found that two-thirds of Americans admitted to knowing “little to nothing” about him. Eighty-three percent of respondents thought that the Emancipation Proclamation freed all the slaves in the United States. (It only freed the slaves in areas under Confederate control.) Another 40% believed that Lincoln was a Democrat. (Google only confuses matters when it lists his party affiliation as “National Union Party‚” which was a temporary rebranding of the Republican Party during the 1864 presidential election.) In fact‚ Lincoln was the first Republican to be elected president. As a professor of American studies at Christopher Newport University I spend a great deal of time teaching my students about Lincoln. I require them to read Lincoln’s speeches and letters in the hope that they will come to appreciate the greatness of his mind‚ the political constraints in which he operated‚ and the moral compass that led him to fight for the principles of the Declaration of Independence. Each summer I also teach these sorts of lessons to groups of high school teachers around the country. I find that teachers are eager to better understand Lincoln’s life and legacy and to find new ways to convey that information in their classrooms. In addition to teaching about Lincoln‚ over the past 15 years‚ I’ve published many books about Lincoln and the Civil War era. In the past 11 years I’ve also had two beautiful daughters. At night I often find myself reading or telling bedtime stories—sometimes about history‚ but more often about the antics of talking animals. Recently‚ I decided to bring these two aspects of my life together by working with my girls to write a fun and exciting children’s book that melds history and adventure into an educational but lively chapter book for early readers. “My Day with Abe Lincoln” tells the story of a third grader named Lucy who doesn’t want to go to school on Monday morning. (For parents of young children this might sound all too familiar!) She throws a fit and dresses in the craziest outfit she can come up with‚ hoping that her parents won’t send her to school looking so weird. When she puts on the top hat from her brother’s magic set she travels back in time to Indiana in the 1820s. She doesn’t know it yet‚ but her mission in the story is to give the hat to Lincoln. After meeting Abe and his sister Sarah on a dirt path in the woods‚ Lucy attends school with them. At the end of the day‚ she goes to the Lincoln cabin where she meets Abe’s father and stepmom. Along the way Lucy learns extraordinary‚ fascinating‚ true stories about the future president—like that he struggled with spelling and that he almost died several times when he was a child. By the time young readers finish “My Day with Abe Lincoln‚” they will know more about Lincoln’s childhood than most adults do. Children will also hopefully feel a connection to Lincoln as they see the hurdles he had to overcome to become our nation’s greatest leader. I spent years researching the history behind this time-travel adventure‚ and I like to tell people that “My Day with Abe Lincoln” is historically accurate‚ except for the time travel! Parents and teachers who want to read this book with their children or students can find a free curriculum guide on the Reedy Press website that gives the history behind each chapter. The guide also provides primary sources and discussion questions that can be used in class. As we celebrate the 215th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth‚ I hope that we can reignite a sense of wonder about him in young Americans. They ought to know the story of the little boy who grew up in poverty and rural isolation—without education‚ who lost his mother at age 9‚ and who almost died several times—and yet who became the most admired and revered of Americans. We owe it to him‚ and to ourselves‚ to better understand his life and legacy so that we can truly appreciate his accomplishments as president. Escape to New York—America’s Wide-Open Northern Border: The BorderLine

A damaged pickup truck with no lights sped past me in the opposite direction in the middle of Malone‚ New York‚ up on America’s northern border with Canada. It was 5 p.m. on a dark winter evening‚ and the truck was going about 60‚ throwing off sparks and burning plastic. At least eight police cars were in pursuit. Seconds later‚ the 27-year-old driver crossed over the road and hit a stone monument. Amazingly‚ though he hit many cars on his mad ride‚ the guy didn’t kill anyone. Even more amazing: This criminally reckless driver had done the same thing just two days before. On Jan. 19‚ he stole a Chevy truck and caused “multiple wrecked vehicles” while police chased him at high speed. According to local press‚ “He was arrested‚ arraigned‚ and released” thanks to New York’s lax bail law. Two days later‚ he came close to killing even more people. Including me. This story illustrates how elites and anti-law-enforcement voters in far-off big cities determine the fates of rural and small-town Americans. It also shows how enforcing the law—arrests and detentions in particular—is effective in deterring law-breaking‚ including illegal immigration. I was in Malone to see the security of the northern border for myself—unlike President Joe Biden or Border Czarina Kamala Harris. I spent a day looking at signs of illegal entry into the U.S. in Burke Station‚ one of eight stations in the Swanton Sector of the U.S. Border Patrol. On the southern border‚ hundreds of illegal aliens cross at a time‚ but groups up north are small. They come in a steady stream‚ though‚ guided by traffickers and phones‚ communicating through social media. With a 12 inches of snow on the ground‚ we saw many places along the border where groups had recently crossed into the U.S. on foot. Sometimes‚ they are seen on cameras and met by the Border Patrol‚ only to be released shortly thereafter. Just as often‚ they are met by amateurs hired by organized alien smugglers who spirit them southward in their personal cars. According to the U.S. Border Patrol‚ at this spot‚ a group of unknown aliens who had walked illegally over the virtually unguarded border from Canada emerged in the small town of Malone‚ New York. (Photo: Simon Hankinson‚ The Heritage Foundation) Customs and Border Protection logged 189‚402 encounters with inadmissible aliens at the northern border in fiscal year 2023. The vast majority of these‚ including 484 on the terrorist watchlist‚ were foreigners applying to get in at formal ports of entry who didn’t have visas or for some other reason weren’t authorized to enter the U.S. But an increasing number of aliens try to sneak in around the official entry stations manned by Customs and Border Protection.   In 2021‚ there were only 916 people trying to sneak across the Canadian border between ports. But in 2022‚ those encounters jumped to 2‚238. With Biden’s catch-and-release‚ the number increased to 10‚021 in fiscal 2023. We’re likely to exceed that in 2024. In the last three months of 2023 alone‚ the Border Patrol reported 3‚846 aliens entering the U.S. from Canada between ports. They came from over 60 countries. Of the eight U.S. Border Patrol sectors on the Canadian border‚ Swanton has the highest number of illegal crossers—10 times as many as the neighboring two sectors combined‚ approaching 3‚000 encounters already in the first quarter of this fiscal year. That’s not counting the many who were spotted and got away. This might not sound like a lot compared to the deluge on the southern border‚ but 20 years ago‚ there were 1‚955 total encounters for Swanton in an entire year‚ and they’ve already seen more in the first three months of this year. Fiscal year 2023 saw close to five times the number of illegal crossers from Canada as 2020. The northern border is incredibly easy to get across. Montreal‚ Canada’s second biggest city‚ is only 50 miles north of Burke Station‚ and more than 90% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the United States. There are plenty of smuggling operations working to move people and contraband across the border. There were few Border Patrol agents per mile to begin with‚ but Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has been shifting some away from this border for “voluntary” details on the southern border—not to patrol‚ but to process more illegal immigrants into the U.S. The remaining northern agents are spread too thinly even to perform their assigned function under the lax Mayorkas priorities‚ which is to catch them at the border and release them into the U.S. In December alone‚ 1‚608 Mexicans came in illegally from Canada. You might wonder why they take this longer route. This is probably because Mexicans don’t need visas to enter Canada‚ only an online travel authorization. Then from Canada‚ they can enter the U.S. and easily evade the under-resourced Border Patrol. Other than the ease of entry‚ I took away two other major observations from this trip up north. One is the scale. The largest Border Patrol sector on the Canadian border‚ Grand Forks‚ covers 861 border miles and eight states. In square miles‚ it is four times the size of Italy. For this‚ they have just over 200 Border Patrol agents. Given about a third are on duty at any time and some are on leave‚ we’re talking about maybe 60 agents on duty at a time. Swanton Sector has 24‚000 square miles and covers all of Vermont and parts of New York and New Hampshire‚ stretching over 295 miles of border. Swanton’s Burke Station started in 1957 with eight agents and one supervisor. That increased over time to a high of 30 agents but is now down to 21 (with seven supervisors). This handful of agents is responsible for a vast‚ flat expanse of land and water. Until you’ve seen it‚ you can’t grasp how utterly open this border is. There are roads with nothing but a small marker that looks like a mini-Washington Monument to tell you where the U.S. stops and Canada begins. Drivers from Canada can ride across unimpeded and are bound only by the honor system to check in at the nearest Customs and Border Protection post. It’s obvious many do not—I saw several cars that did not head toward the official port of entry. A small stone monument marks the virtually unguarded U.S.-Canadian border in Malone‚ New York. Looking south into the USA. (Photo: Simon Hankinson‚ The Heritage Foundation) Much of the border is on private land‚ but there is also the St. Regis Mohawk Indian Territory‚ which abuts Canada northwest of Malone. The reservation is a major conduit for smuggling‚ and U.S. law enforcement has a limited scope of authority. There isn’t even one Border Patrol agent for every 10 miles of border‚ and there is no fence to channel illegal crossers and make the patrol more efficient. Without a barrier‚ one Border Patrol expert testified that they need one agent per mile. My last take-away from my trip to the northern border is that illegal immigrants respond to information and incentives like anyone else. Knowing they will be released into the United States upon arrival is what draws them. Recently‚ groups of Indians (from South Asia) were coming over in organized fashion. They went from India to Canada‚ were guided across the border‚ and were received on the U.S. side by alien smugglers. These groups had already made motel reservations in Malone. They knew that they’d be nominally arrested by the Border Patrol‚ processed‚ and then given a ride to their motels and left free to roam the country until their immigration court date—sometimes years in the future. But once Border Patrol was given permission by Department of Homeland Security headquarters to detain them‚ the free ride turned into consequences‚ and the Indian groups stopped exploiting the northern route.   Detention and enforcement work on the northern border as well as the southern. Until we adequately staff and task the Border Patrol to do those things‚ incursions into our country will continue to increase from both the north and the south. CNN Hypes Fani Willis Refusing to Step Away from Trump Case Amid Probe

During CNN This Morning’s first hour on Thursday‚ CNN national security reporter Zachary Cohen hyped Fulton Country District Attorney Fani Willis for refusing to step away from her election subversion case against former President Trump. He also downplayed the seriousness of the case regarding her alleged use of taxpayer dollars to fund her adultery with Special Counsel Nathan Wade‚ who was overseeing the prosecution. He acted skeptical of the allegations and called them “low risk.” Co-host Poppy Harlow lead into the segment by announcing that “Willis does not plan to step down” and was “standing her ground” despite the “scrutiny and calls to resign or pull herself off.”     Such phrasing portrays Willis as a courageous protester rather than what she is: the subject of an alleged sex and corruption scandal. According to Cohen‚ Willis is “digging in” and refusing to leave her position‚ while those who might be looking to oust her would find themselves facing “an uphill battle”: That's exactly right. Multiple sources are telling me that Fani Willis is digging in. She's going to take her chances arguing this in court. She—It's now going to be up to the judge to decide whether or not to disqualify her‚ and as you mentioned‚ these are not just allegations about an improper romantic relationship. Um‚ Trump and several of his codefendants are claiming that Fani Willis improperly used taxpayer dollars to um‚ you know‚ fund vacations through her‚ um‚ lover‚ alleged lover‚ Nathan Wade. Such rhetoric is indicative of CNN’s routine double standards for stories involving these types of political scandals. The severity of the subject was also questioned by co-host Phil Mattingly who teed up Cohen by wondering is Willis and a good shot at beating the accusations. “Are the chances high that everything will go the way she wants it‚ is this a 50/50‚ where does this stand right now?” he wondered. Cohen’s final commentary reveals that CNN is willing to readily dismiss these allegations against Willis as mere Republican attempts to discredit her case against Trump. “[T]hat doesn't mean they can't hurt her politically‚ they can’t try to undermine the credibility of this case by attacking her personally‚ by attacking her romantic life allegedly‚ by‚ you know‚ raising these questions even if the evidence doesn't necessarily prove what the allegations are‚” Cohen said. The transcript is below. Click "expand" to read: CNN This Morning 2/1/2024 6:29:56 a.m. Eastern POPPY HARLOW: Well‚ new reporting this morning‚ Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis does not plan to step down from the Georgia election subversion case after allegations emerge that she has had an inappropriate relationship with the lead prosecutor she hired on the case‚ Nathan Wade. She's faced intense scrutiny and calls to resign or pull herself off. Our Zach Cohen has some really interesting reporting on this. He joins us this morning. It isn't just about a relationship. What it's about is payments‚ so how he was paid with taxpayer money. But she's standing her ground. She's not going anywhere? ZACHARY COHEN: That's exactly right. Multiple sources are telling me that Fani Willis is digging in. She's going to take her chances arguing this in court. It's now going to be up to the judge to decide whether or not to disqualify her‚ and as you mentioned‚ these are not just allegations about an improper romantic relationship. Um‚ Trump and several of his codefendants are claiming that Fani Willis improperly used taxpayer dollars to‚ you know‚ fund vacations through her lover‚ alleged lover‚ Nathan Wade. Now she's going to have to potentially address all these questions in open court. She weighed and several others were subpoenaed to testify publicly on February 15th when there's a hearing about this entire issue. So‚ you know‚ it remains to be seen. But as of right now‚ Fani Willis not voluntarily taking herself out of the game. PHIL MATTINGLY: Zach‚ when you say she's going to take her chances‚ what kind of risk is that? Are the chances high that everything will go the way she wants it‚ is this a 50/50‚ where does this stand right now? COHEN: Yeah‚ Phil‚ I’ve talked to sources on both sides of the case‚ and they all say‚ look‚ it's an uphill battle to try to get Fani Willis disqualified from this case. But‚ you know‚ that doesn't mean they can't hurt her politically‚ they can’t try to undermine the credibility of this case by attacking her personally‚ by attacking her romantic life allegedly‚ by‚ you know‚ raising these questions even if the evidence doesn't necessarily prove what the allegations are. So‚ really‚ at the end of the day‚ the legal ramifications here‚ you know‚ it's a low risk but the political ramifications could be very high for Willis specifically.  HARLOW: Thank you‚ Zach‚ great reporting.

How leftists will DESTROY ‘democracy’ to ‘protect’ it against Trump

The left isn’t known for its integrity. In the middle of screaming “save our democracy‚” it's actively attempting to destroy it by using public-private partnerships and lawfare to try and keep former President Donald Trump out of the White House. These groups claim that Trump would give himself emergency powers and clear the government and military of all dissenters‚ but as Glenn Beck points out‚ that’s exactly what the Biden administration is already doing. “Give me the power‚” Glenn says‚ mocking Biden’s exact words as the president begged Congress for emergency powers to take care of the border crisis he has helped cause. “I don’t care who the president is. The administrative state has too much power right now. Why aren’t they worried about the expansion of presidential power under Biden‚ just Trump?” Glenn asks. But they refuse to look at the current president‚ only at Trump. Former acting assistant Attorney General for National Security in the U.S. Department of Justice Mary McCord has claimed that she and others are already starting “to put together a team to think through the most damaging types of things that Trump might do.” She added that they’re “ready to bring lawsuits if we have to.” “These people have no intention of following the people’s will. You’re too stupid. They know; they will take all of the power that they have‚ and they will stop him‚” Glenn says. 150 Democrats vote against measure declaring aliens as deportable if convicted of 'driving while intoxicated or impaired'

In a bipartisan 274-150 vote‚ the House of Representatives passed a measure on Thursday which would declare that aliens who drive "while intoxicated or impaired" are inadmissible‚ and‚ if convicted of such an offense‚ deportable. The 150 lawmakers who voted against the measure were all Democrats. But 59 other Democrats joined 215 Republicans in voting to approve the measure. "Any alien who has been convicted of an offense for driving while intoxicated or impaired‚ as those terms are defined under the law of the jurisdiction where the conviction occurred (including a conviction for driving while under the influence of or impaired by alcohol or drugs)‚ without regard to whether the conviction is classified as a misdemeanor or felony under Federal‚ State‚ tribal‚ or local law‚ is deportable‚" the measure reads."Any alien who has been convicted of‚ who admits having committed‚ or who admits committing acts which constitute the essential elements of an offense for driving while intoxicated or impaired‚ as those terms are defined under the law of the jurisdiction where the conviction‚ offense‚ or acts constituting the essential elements of the offense occurred (including an offense for driving while under the influence of or impaired by alcohol or drugs)‚ without regard to whether the conviction or offense is classified as a misdemeanor or felony under Federal‚ State‚ tribal‚ or local law‚ is inadmissible‚" the proposal states. In speaking out against the measure‚ Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington called the proposal "extraordinarily broad" and claimed‚ "Public safety threats‚ including those who have been convicted of serious DUI offenses are already inadmissible and removable ... and this bill would not change or enhance that." U.S. law currently indicates that an alien is deportable if they have been "convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude committed within five years (or 10 years in the case of an alien provided lawful permanent resident status under section 1255(j) of this title) after the date of admission‚ and" have "convicted of a crime for which a sentence of one year or longer may be imposed."Jayapal claimed that "courts have ruled ... that serious DUI offenses that put others at risk are CIMTs and make the perpetrators deportable."Like Blaze News? 6 pro-life activists convicted by Biden's DOJ face decade in prison for 'peaceful life-affirming gathering' at abortion clinic

Pro-life activists face more than a decade in prison after being convicted on Tuesday by the Biden administration's Department of Justice for allegedly violating a federal law. However‚ attorneys for the convicted activists are expected to appeal the decision‚ arguing that the pro-life demonstrators were participating in a "peaceful life-affirming gathering."After a six-day federal trial‚ six defendants were found guilty of violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act by a federal jury in Nashville‚ Tennessee. The defendants — Chester Gallagher‚ Heather Idoni‚ Calvin Zastrow‚ Coleman Boyd‚ Paul Vaughn‚ and Dennis Green — face a maximum of 10.5 years in prison and fines of up to $260‚000.The U.S. Department of Justice declared in a press release that the six defendants "engaged in a conspiracy to prevent the clinic employees from providing‚ and patients from receiving‚ reproductive health services‚ a civil right secured by the FACE Act."The FACE Act was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1994 as a "response to an increase in violence toward providers and patients of reproductive health services‚" according to the DOJ. The FACE Act prohibits "violent‚ threatening‚ damaging‚ and obstructive conduct intended to injure‚ intimidate‚ or interfere with the right to seek‚ obtain or provide reproductive health services."Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division said this week‚ "These defendants are being held accountable for unlawfully obstructing access to reproductive health services. The Justice Department will continue to enforce the FACE Act to protect the rights of those who provide and those who seek access to such services." U.S. Attorney Henry C. Leventis for the Middle District of Tennessee added‚ "These defendants knowingly chose to violate laws they disagreed with. The jury’s verdict today is a victory for the rule of law in this country and a reminder that we cannot pick and choose which laws we follow. It is also a testament to the outstanding work done in this case by the trial team and our law enforcement partners."The FBI Memphis Field Office‚ Nashville Resident Agency investigated the case.Pro-life activists staged a protest in March 2021 inside the Carafem abortion clinic in Mount Juliet‚ Tennessee. As Blaze News previously reported‚ a 29-minute video shows the pro-life protesters lining the walls of the abortion clinic as they sang and prayed. Officers with the Mount Juliet Police Department requested that the protesters to leave the clinic and noted that they could continue the demonstration outside the building. After a brief negotiation with a pastor who spoke for the pro-life group‚ police gave the protesters five minutes to vacate the premises. Some of the protesters left‚ but a handful continued to stay inside the abortion clinic. Several of the pro-life participants were arrested by local police and were later released after posting bail for misdemeanor trespassing charges. The Thomas More Society described the incident as a "peaceful life-affirming gathering."Steve Crampton — a lawyer with the Thomas More Society and an attorney for Paul Vaughn — said in a press release‚ "We are‚ of course‚ disappointed with the outcome. This was a peaceful demonstration by entirely peaceable citizens — filled with prayer‚ hymn-singing‚ and worship — oriented toward persuading expecting mothers not to abort their babies."Crampton added‚ "Unfortunately‚ the Biden Department of Justice decided to characterize Paul Vaughn’s peaceful actions as a felony ‘conspiracy against rights‚’ to intimidate and punish Paul and other pro-life people and people of faith."The Thomas More Society said attorneys representing Vaughn are "expected to announce that they will appeal the conviction."The convicted pro-life demonstrators are scheduled to have their sentencing hearing on July 2.
