Brian Lumley‚ 1937—2024

News in remembrance Brian Lumley‚ 1937—2024 The Grand Master created the Necroscope universe‚ and wrote Lovecraftian tales. By Molly Templeton | Published on January 31‚ 2024 icon-comment 0 Share New Share Twitter Facebook Pinterest RSS Feed We are sorry to report that horror writer Brian Lumley‚ the winner of multiple lifetime achievement awards‚ died earlier this month at the age of 86. Lumley was known for the series that began with Necroscope (1986) as well as for his Lovecraftian work‚ which he began publishing in the ’70s. As the bio on his website notes‚ “Born 2nd December‚ 1937‚ Brian Lumley came into the world just nine months after the most obvious of his forebears—meaning of course a ‘literary’ forebear‚ namely‚ H. P. Lovecraft—had departed from it.” Lumley began writing in the world of Lovecraft while he was still a member of the Royal Military Police‚ writing two stories for the anthology Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos (1969). He continued to write Lovecraftian stories‚ including the novels in his Titus Crow series‚ while a member of the RMP. In 1980‚ he retired from the military to begin writing full-time. More tales in the Lovecraft mythos followed‚ but in 1984 he began writing Necroscope‚ which would become his breakout work. In this series‚ necroscopes are people who can communicate with the dead. The series ran to 18 novels; the last‚ Necroscope: The Möbius Murders‚ was published in 2013. For years‚ there have been reports that a Necroscope adaptation is in the works; we reported on one project in 2012‚ and another in 2021. The more recent project was intended to be a multi-platform franchise‚ but no further details have been announced. Lumley also wrote what his bio calls the “SF-ish novel” The House of Doors‚ and its sequel Maze of Worlds and published many collections of his short works. Lumley served as president of the Horror Writers Association in 1996-1997‚ and in 1998‚ was named a Grand Master by the organization. In 2010‚ he received both the Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement and the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement. His wife‚ Barbara Ann Lumley‚ wrote on Facebook: After a 22-year stint as a Royal Military Policeman‚ he had a long and prosperous lifetime of doing what he loved to do‚ bringing continued enjoyment to all his readers and listeners. Brian has written approximately 60 books along with many‚ many short stories‚ and novellas. He is survived by his wife‚ Barbara Ann (Silky) Lumley‚ his daughter Julie and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Writers on the website formerly known as Twitter have been paying their respects‚ including Christopher Golden and Michael Marshall Smith. Very sad. A huge imagination and a huge personality. RIP Brian Lumley. https://t.co/wcuy9l74gR— Christopher Golden (@ChristophGolden) January 28‚ 2024 Just to mark the (finally announced) passing of Brian Lumley‚ massively successful British scribe within the Cthulhu mythos. Had many a beer with him‚ and in my experience he was always respectful‚ encouraging‚ and kind towards the young whippersnappers of the horror genre.— Michael Marshall Smith (@ememess) January 30‚ 2024 The post Brian Lumley‚ 1937—2024 appeared first on Reactor.

Worldcon Intellectual Property Censures Chengdu Worldcon Hugo Administrators

News Hugo Awards Worldcon Intellectual Property Censures Chengdu Worldcon Hugo Administrators The censure comes in the wake of unanswered questions pertaining to Hugo Award eligibility at WorldCon 2023. By Vanessa Armstrong | Published on January 31‚ 2024 icon-comment 0 Share New Share Twitter Facebook Pinterest RSS Feed On January 20‚ the Chengdu Worldcon team released the final statistics for their administration of the 2023 Hugo Awards. The details raised concern in the SFF community‚ as several nominations‚ such as R.F. Kuang’s Babel in the Best Novel category and Xiran Jay Zhao in the Astounding Award category‚ were listed as “not eligible” without explanation. Paul Weimer was also listed as “not eligible” in the Fan Writer category for no clear reason‚ and episode six of the Netflix adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman was also disqualified even though it should have been eligible under existing rules.  Responses from the Chengdu team did not clear up these decisions in the days since‚ resulting in speculation about the exclusions.  “I can only guess to why I was excluded‚ but it probably has something to do with my critical comments about the Chinese government in the past‚” Zhao told The Guardian. “You would think that as a big‚ powerful country‚ China would be graceful about criticisms‚ but they in fact take it very personally‚ and doubly so when it’s from Chinese diaspora.” Dave McCarty‚ who headed the Hugo awards process for Chengdu‚ said on Facebook that “nobody has ordered me to do anything… There was no communication between the Hugo administration team and the Chinese government in any official manner.” The Hugo awards‚ like the annual Worldcon event‚ are administered by a different host organization each year. Worldcon Intellectual Property (WIP)‚ a non-profit corporation that holds the service marks for the World Science Fiction Society (whose members attend Worldcon and take part in the Hugo nomination and award selection process)‚ was not directly involved in the Chengdu Hugo Awards process. WIP issued a statement on January 30 ‚ however‚ announcing that McCarty‚ who was also director of WIP‚ has resigned along with the WIP Board Chair Kevin Standlee. Donald Eastlake has become the new Chair of the WIP Board.  The WIP also formally censured McCarty “for his public comments that have led to harm of the goodwill and value of our marks and for actions of the Hugo Administration Committee of the Chengdu Worldcon that he presided over” and Standlee for “public comments that mistakenly led people to believe that we are not servicing our marks.” Chen Shi and Ben Yalow were also censured for “actions of the Hugo Administration Committee of the Chengdu Worldcon” that they presided over. The Dead by Daylight Chief of Staff is wrong about Palworld

The Dead by Daylight Chief of Staff broached more than a few damning points about Palworld‚ a game that has claimed the hearts of literally millions. Are his words valid criticism‚ or are they far too harsh for the Early Access hit? Palworld isn’t perfect Nathan S.‚ the Chief of Staff for Dead by Daylight‚ made a not-so-positive LinkedIn post discussing his opinion on Palworld. Let’s be clear — I love Palworld. Despite my unbridled joy surrounding this game‚ not everyone will share the same opinion. I’d like to say that that is okay. Every game won’t suit every player. I even agree with some of what Nathan says‚ and I don’t wish to attack someone for simply expressing their displeasure about a game I enjoy. There’s enough of that online already. Nathan S. claims that Palworld is buggy. This is true. He says that some areas feel uninteresting and empty — even points of interest. This is also true. He b...

EXCLUSIVE: School District Lied to Mother‚ Socially Transitioned Young Girl Without Parental Consent‚ Lawsuit Claims

FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL—A New York school district socially transitioned a girl without her mother’s consent‚ repeatedly lying to the mother about the child’s mental health and social struggles‚ according to a new lawsuit. Represented by Alliance Defending Freedom‚ Jennifer Vitsaxaki of New York filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the Skaneateles Central School District and Board of Education‚ accusing them of violating her constitutional rights through their deception and their social transitioning of her 12-year-old daughter‚ Jane. The Daily Signal first obtained the lawsuit‚ filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York. Skaneateles‚ N.Y.‚ where the school district is located‚ is about 22 miles southwest of Syracuse. “Parents have the right to direct the upbringing and education of their kids‚ and they cannot fulfill those responsibilities when schools hide information from them and make critical decisions that can have lifelong consequences for their child‚” said Kate Anderson‚ senior counsel with Alliance Defending Freedom. “So‚ this case is important to ensure that all parents can have the information they need to do what’s best for their kids.” Though Michael Vitsaxaki and Jennifer Vitsaxaki are both U.S. citizens‚ the Vitsaxaki family had spent almost a decade in Greece‚ where the Vitsaxaki parents were from‚ and Jane’s primary language was Greek. The family decided to leave Greece when its economy collapsed and they realized that they could not continue raising their children there‚ but the transition from their closely knit community in Greece to the U.S. was disruptive to the entire family’s lives. Young Jane Vitsaxaki had to adapt to a “new culture‚ including learning to go through each day speaking primarily English instead of Greek‚” and her father’s job required him to frequently travel out of the country. The complaint states that Jennifer Vitsaxaki began to be increasingly concerned as her daughter was exhibiting signs of anxiety and depression and occasionally refusing to leave home. The mother repeatedly asked school district employees about whether they had noticed anything troubling her daughter‚ but was met with denials and assurances that her daughter was fine. “Those repeated reassurances concealed the truth‚” the complaint states. “While school officials kept telling Mrs. Vitsaxaki that there was nothing to report‚ a school counselor was regularly meeting with her daughter and her peers to address ongoing bullying suffered by … Jane‚ and other girls in the group.” Worse than that‚ the complaint said‚ the district began treating Jane as though she were a boy—”just as it had done with several other girls in her grade.” 01_2024.01.31-VvSCSD-COMP-Plaintiffs-Verified-Complaint_TO-FILEDownload “The same counselor instructed school staff to treat Mrs. Vitsaxaki’s daughter as though she were a boy by referring to her with a boy’s name and the third-person plural pronouns ‘they’ and ‘them’—part of a controversial psychosocial intervention often called ‘social transition‚'” the complaint states. “Then‚ a school psychologist‚ who told school staff to keep their actions secret from Mrs. Vitsaxaki‚ began meeting with Jane regularly without Mrs. Vitsaxaki’s knowledge.” No one had told Mrs. Vitsaxaki that the district had made any of these decisions or taken these actions. “School staff carefully used Jane’s given name and female pronouns when speaking with Mrs. Vitsaxaki‚ and they repeatedly said everything was fine‚ all the while treating Jane as a boy and sending her resources for medical transition behind Mrs. Vitsaxaki’s back‚” her lawsuit says. The district employees didn’t tell Vitsaxaki about any of this for months‚ the lawsuit alleges‚ and Jane’s mental condition worsened. She was resisting going to school and becoming increasingly anxious and negative. “At one point‚ and at her daughter’s request‚ Mrs. Vitsaxaki even took a job as a bus driver to learn more about what could be causing her daughter’s distress‚” the suit says. Finally‚ a staff member “could no longer stomach” the deception and urged the principal to tell Jane’s mother. “When [the principal] finally did‚ Mrs. Vitsaxaki was shocked‚” the complaint says. “She and her husband‚ Jane’s father‚ met with representatives of the school district. They directed the school district to stop taking any further action without their consent and sought open communication with the teachers to understand what had happened.” It continued: “But the principal told them school district policy required employees to deceive them‚ and despite assurances to the contrary‚ the deception continued. Left with no other options‚ Mrs. Vitsaxaki withdrew her daughter from the school district.” Vitsaxaki’s lawsuit stresses that she has a fundamental right to direct the upbringing‚ education and health care of her child‚ a right that is “inconsistent with the deceptive‚ heavy-handed‚ and disruptiveintervention that the school district perpetrated against Mrs. Vitsaxaki’s daughter—an intervention that gravely interfered with her ability to raise her daughter and contradicted her religious beliefs.” “Ultimately‚ parents—not school employees or other government officials—ought to decide how to resolve a child’s questions about sensitive topics like identity and gender confusion‚” the complaint says. “Parents like Mrs. Vitsaxaki know their children better than anyone else. And parents‚ not school employees‚ will be there for a child in the long run‚ when the consequences of these decisions become fully apparent.” Have an opinion about this article? Watch: Lawmakers and Tech CEOs Push Online Age and ID Verification Proposals During Hearing on Child Safety

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. As we previously reported as something to look out for in 2024‚ US lawmakers are intent on pushing online ID‚ age verification‚ and causing an end to online anonymity – despite constitutional concerns. And during a hearing today‚ tech CEOs supported proposals that would greatly expand the requirements for online ID verification and erode the ability to use the internet without connecting your online activity to your identity. The proposals are being pushed in the name of protecting children online but would impact anyone who doesn’t want to tie all of their online speech and activity to their real ID – over surveillance‚ censorship‚ or whistleblowing concerns. In response to criticism from lawmakers‚ Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg pushed for far-reaching online age verification standards that would impose age verification at the app store level — a proposal that would mean the vast majority of mobile app usage could be tied to a person’s official identity. https://video.reclaimthenet.org/articles/lawmakers-tech-ceos-online-age-id-verification-hearing-1.mp4 https://video.reclaimthenet.org/articles/lawmakers-tech-ceos-online-age-id-verification-hearing-2.mp4 X CEO Linda Yaccarino expressed support for the Kids Online Safety Act‚ a bill that would expand online age verification. https://video.reclaimthenet.org/articles/lawmakers-tech-ceos-online-age-id-verification-hearing-3.mp4 Snap CEO Evan Spiegel expressed support for the Kids Online Safety Act and the Cooper Davis Act‚ a bill that targets private messaging apps and could ban end-to-end encryption. https://video.reclaimthenet.org/articles/lawmakers-tech-ceos-online-age-id-verification-hearing-4.mp4 The proposals being pushed during this hearing would represent a dramatic reshaping of the once free and open internet. Instead of the ability to communicate or browse the internet privately being the default‚ surveillance would become more prevalent and the ability to access many online services would be linked to a digital ID or age verification system.
